Leon Chandler Gauthier
Danielson - Leon Chandler Gauthier, 83, of Main Street, Danielson, died Thursday, June 18, 2009 at the Pierce Memorial Baptist Home in Brooklyn. Husband of 62 years of the late Madeleine E. Gauthier. Born August 8, 1925 in Killingly, at the home of his parents, Lionel J. and Lila Gauthier.
He owned and operated Gauthier Insurance Agency in Danielson from 1962 to 1988 when it was transferred to his son Bradford C. Gauthier. A graduate of Killingly High School, "Class of 1943", later attended Norwich University and graduated from New York Insurance Institute. He served two and a half years in the US Army Air Corps during WWII. He was very active in civic affairs during his lifetime, which included Chairman of the Killingly Board of Education and President of the Borough of Danielson, life memberships in the Danielson VFW, Elks, and American Legion, active in the UCT organization. In 1952 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Jaycees for the State of CT and a member of the Westfield Congregational Church.
He leaves his son: Bradford C. Gauthier and his wife Arlene of Danielson, his daughter: Blair Mondor and her husband Robert of Danielson; two grandchildren: Bradford C. Gauthier, II; Graham T. Gauthier, and a great grandson, Owen Gauthier of Danielson.
Funeral Services are private. No calling hours. Donations may be made in his memory to the charity of one's choice. Gagnon and Costello Funeral Home, 33 Reynolds Street, Danielson, is directing arrangements.
Clara Lillian Avery
Clara Lillian Avery, age 89, of Wrights Crossing Road, Pomfret, died Saturday, June 20, 2009 at Evergreen Health Care in Stafford Springs. She was the beloved wife of Edward William Avery, he died March 17, 1948. She was born November 18, 1919 in Pomfret, daughter of the late James H. and Lucy M. (Baker) Nuttall.
Clara was an honor graduate of Putnam High School in 1937. Upon graduation Clara received the opportunity to work as a cashier at the Montgomery Ward Store in Putnam. She later advanced from cashier to head bookkeeper and then on to office manager. After 10 years she left the store to accept a position as secretary and bookkeeper at Idle Wild Farms in Pomfret. In 1961 Clara was offered a position at the Law Offices of Woisard, Back & Woisard, which is now known as the Law Offices of Jackson, Harris, Burlingame & Hubert. She was employed there until her retirement in January 1997. Clara made her home in Pomfret her entire life with many interests in serving her community. She was the clerk of the First Congregational Church of Pomfret, President of Home Economics Group. She received her 75 year certificate from Wolf Den Grange in April 2009. During her service with the Grange she served as Lady Assisted Steward Lecturer and Master of Ladies Degree Team. For the Town of Pomfret, Clara served as Chair of the Jury Committee, she was Clerk for the Board of Education and Pomfret Probate Court for many years. Clara served as Assistant to the Town Clerk as well. She was also Secretary for the Board of Finance for more than twenty years.
She leaves two sons: Russell E. Avery of Pomfret; Douglas J. Avery and his wife Kathryn of Willington; a niece Nancy (Nuttall) McCombs, seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Clara was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers.
Funeral Service will be Saturday, June 27, 2009 at 11:00 AM at the Smith and Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam. Calling hours 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 7:00 TO 9:00 PM Friday, June 26, 2009 at the Funeral Home. Burial in South Cemetery, Brooklyn. Edwin Joseph Prior
Edwin Joseph Prior of Woodstock, Connecticut, died June 19, 2009 at Day Kimball Hospital, Putnam, Connecticut. He was born January 15, 1917 in New York City, New York. Edwin was a graduate of Hilliard College, now the University of Hartford. His distinguished career led him to American Brands, where he retired as Chief Accounting Officer, after progressing through increasingly responsible positions in American Tobacco Company. Edwin was a talented woodworker, designing and creating many beautiful pieces of handcrafted furniture. He was an avid gardener and loved reading about Civil War history. He was a friend of the Abington Church for many years.
Edwin was preceded in death by his parents, John Thomas and Augusta Steller Prior, his sister Mary Negri, and his wife Eva Jane Covell Prior. He is survived by his sons, Stephen Robert and his wife Emily of Petersburg, Virginia, and Michael Joseph and Maria Clouter of East Anglia, England; and by two grandsons and one great-grandson. In addition, he is survived by his brothers Robert and Jack Prior, and one sister, Lucille Donnelly.
The family expresses sincere appreciation to Dr. Kevin Boucher and his staff, and to the staffs of Westview Healthcare Center and Day Kimball Hospital who provided kind and gracious care to Mr. Prior throughout his lengthy illness.
A memorial service will be held at Smith and Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at 2 p.m. Mr. Prior will be interred in Abington Cemetery, Abington, Connecticut. Muriel Lozeau
Muriel Lozeau, 86, of Webster, died Thursday June 18, at Webster Manor in Webster. She was the wife of the late John Lozeau, he died May 7, 2006. Born May 22, 1923 in Woonsocket, RI, daughter of Wilfred and Cora (Proulx) Belisle.
She had made her home Putnam, Webster and Thompson area for the last five years, formerly from Woonsocket, RI. She was a communicant of Holy Family Church in Woonsocket, RI, active with the CFM and an advisor for the CYO, Church Ministries and active with Parish Functions. Her faith was very important to her. Muriel traveled throughout the US and the world with her husband.
She leaves her children: Suzanne Melson of Jacksonville, FL, Madeleine Isble of Woonsocket, RI, Jeannette Marcotte of North Augusta, SC, Maurice Lozeau of West Warwick, RI, Denise Lozeau of Midwest City, OK, Thomas Lozeau of Putnam, CT, 14 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren, two brothers: Raymond Belisle of FL; Paul Belisle of Woonsocket, several nieces and nephews.
The Funeral will be Friday, June 26, 2009 at 10:00 am from the Smith and Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am at ST Mary Church Of The Visitation, 218 Providence Street, Putnam. James A. Leclerc
James A. Leclerc, 73, of East Killingly, formerly of Woodstock and Putnam, died Tuesday at the Haven Health Center in Danielson after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born September 24, 1935 in ST Johnsbury, VT, son of the late Antonio and Ruth (Allen) Leclerc.
He had made his home in East Killingly for the last thirty years. He was employed for over thirty years at Tilcon - Tamasso in Wauregan, as a Heavy Equipment Operator. He served in the US Army from 1957 to 1959, stationed in Korea. He enjoyed working on his "Toys" his antique trucks and tractors, he could fix just about anything, always willing to lend a hand to help his family or a friend. He enjoyed his winters in Florida and also enjoyed dancing.
He leaves his children: Janet Johnson and her husband Glenn of Brooklyn; Tony Leclerc of Putnam; Ray Leclerc of Pomfret; a sister: Barbara Leclerc and her husband Bevan Crighton of Oakdale; grandchildren: Skye Johnson; Cassandra Johnson, both of Brooklyn; niece: Deborah Chaffee Brown of Deep River; nephews: Robert Chaffee of Willimantic; Michael Chaffee of Storrs.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, June 28, 2009 at 6:00 PM at the Smith and Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam. Calling Hours will be Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Funeral Home. Arlene Stahecki
Danielson - Arlene Stahecki passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at UMASS Memorial after a long struggle with heart disease with her loving family by her side. The beloved wife of Peter Stahecki, Jr. She was born March 1, 1926 in Killingly a daughter of the late Wilfred and Blanche Caron.
Arlene was employed for many years at Inter Royal, Arrow Hart, and retired from Lydal in 1990. She was a member of St. James Church. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, crocheting and was an avid walker. She also enjoyed her annual trips to York Beach, ME. Arlene was a very devoted and loving mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her husband, Peter of 62 years, a daughter, Deborah Tourangeau and her husband Paul of Brooklyn; two special grandchildren, Justin Tourangeau of Brooklyn, CT and Holly Stahecki of Quinebaug, CT, a special sister, Anita Shippee of Maple Court and a brother Wilfred Caron, Jr., and his wife Lucy of Danielson, two sisters-in-law, Mildred Hebert of Dayville, CT and Sophie Holbrook of Palmer, MA. She also leaves behind her godchild, Pam Lloyd of Webster, MA and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Armand Caron and Arthur Caron.

HENRY PETER TORCELLINI
EASTFORD - Henry "Hank" Torcellini, 68, of Westford Road, died June 24, 2009, in Hartford Hospital, following a massive stroke. He was born June 20, 1941, in New Haven, CT, the son of Henry Torcellini and Mary (Regula) Torcellini. He was the husband of forty-five years of Dorothy "Dottie" (Buell) Torcellini. In addition to Dottie, he is survived by two sons and their families: Paul and his wife Julia, Micah, and Isaac Torcellini of Kittredge, CO, and Rob and his wife Deb, Megan, and Sarah Torcellini of Eastford; sister: Pat Torcellini of Dunedin, FL, and stepmother: Sue Torcellini of Palm Harbor, FL. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Paula Saddler. This humble, gentle man will be greatly missed by his extended family, coworkers and colleagues, and many friends.
Hank was a graduate of WPI and Northeastern University and was a Professional Engineer, practicing civil engineering for over 30 years at Gardner & Peterson Associates in Tolland CT. Hank had a lifelong commitment to public service. He had over 75 years of combined volunteer time on various boards and committees in the Town of Eastford, including Planning Commission, Inland Wetlands Committee, School Building Committee, Town Office Building Expansion Commission, and Plan of Conservation Development Committee, as well as Town Representative on the Board of Directors for the Northeast District Department of Health and many policy committees.
He was a member of the Congregational Church of Eastford, where he was a Sunday Worship Service usher for over twenty-five years, a Trustee, and pancake flipper extraordinaire at the Woodstock Fair Blueberry Pancake Booth.
Hank designed and built his own home and loved caring for it and the surrounding yard and gardens. He and Dottie enjoyed traveling and particularly enjoyed experiences in the great American West. He enjoyed the company and eccentricities of cats, good food, and a diverse array of activities, such as the annual family croquet tournament, playing cribbage, woodworking, kayaking, and helping his sons with their respective projects-of-the-moment; but his greatest love was spending time with his cherished grandchildren.
A Celebration of Hank's Life will be held Sunday, July 5, 2009 at 1:00 p.m., at the Congregational Church of Eastford, 8 Church Road, Eastford. There are no calling hours. Joseph F. Naines
Naples - Joseph F. Naines, age 96, formerly of Woodstock, passed away at Avow Hospice House, Naples, Florida on Wednesday, June 24, 2009. He was the beloved husband of Lucille J. Naines, who predeceased him. He was born April 15, 1913 in New York City, NY, son of the late Anthony Naines and Anna Cziutaiciute Naines.
He attended Woodstock Schools and Woodstock Academy. Joseph and Lucille were married November 9, 1935 and made their home on a dairy farm in Woodstock, CT. Joseph enjoyed hunting, baseball, gardening and dancing. In 1976 they retired and moved to Naples, FL.
Joseph is survived by his daughter, Lucille Blackmer Rucki and her husband Walter J. Rucki, Jr. of Pomfret, CT, his grandson Robert M. Blackmer and his wife Karen of Pomfret, CT., his granddaughter Cheryl S. Lemieux and husband Philip of Putnam, his great-granddaughter Kathryn Blackmer of Bradenton, FL and great-grandson Michael Blackmer of Pomfret, CT. He is also survived by his son Anthony F. Naines of Naples, FL, his grandson Brian A. Naines and great-granddaughter Kaia Naines of Jacksonville, FL. He was predeceased by a son-in-law, Robert F. Blackmer, and a daughter-in-law, Donna Green Naines.

Danielson-Violet Cardinal
Danielson-Violet Cardinal, 88, of L'Homme Street, Danielson, died Sunday, June 28, 2009 at Day Kimball Hospital. Beloved wife of 49 years of Clarence Cardinal, he died in 1991. She was born August 23, 1920 in Danielson, daughter of the late Eric A. and Aurore (Robillard) Welcher.
She had made her home in Danielson all of her life, a graduate of ST James School and Killingly High School. Violet was a communicant of ST James Church in Danielson, a member of Putnam Travelers Club and active with the Cub Scouts. She operated her preschool known as "Little People Nursery School" from 1982 until her retirement. She had worked for 18 years at Miss Leach's Nursery School and Kindergarten and previously was employed at the Institute of Living in Hartford, General Insurance Company in Hartford and William Prym Company in Dayville. She volunteered at Day Kimball Hospital and the John Dempsey Center for several years. Violet's joy in life was teaching and nurturing young children and seeing that they had a good foundation in life. She stayed in contact with many of her former students throughout the years. Violet received her certificate of Teachers Aide and Early Child Development from the University of Connecticut and also received several certificates of award from the Quinebaug Community College.
She leaves her sons: Richard W. Cardinal and his companion, Diane Valenti of Moosup, Kenneth G. Cardinal and his wife Cindy of Pomfret, two beloved grandsons, Trevor Cardinal of Danielson and Tory Cardinal of Pomfret.

Gerard P. Roy
Gerard P. Roy, age 76 of Dayville, passed away at his home Monday, June 29, 2009 . He was the beloved husband of Irene (Chausse) Roy of Attawaugan. They were married on July 7, 1956 at ST Joseph's Church in Dayville. Born and raised in Dayville, he was the son of the late Joseph O. and Maria (Massey) Roy, both of Quebec, Canada.
Gerard worked at William Prym, Inc., of Dayville from age 16 and was a volunteer fire fighter in Dayville. At this time he was also in the Navy Reserves. In 1953 he enlisted in the US Navy and graduated from Radioman School in Bainbridge, MD. He was stationed out of Little Creek, VA and served as a Radioman on the USS LSMR 411. He was honorably discharged in 1955. He completed his high school education while on board ship in the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Gerard graduated from the Harvard H. Ellis Technical School with a degree in Tool and Die in 1956. He volunteered for the Dayville Fire Department for many years. He was employed and perfected his skills at Pratt and Whitney, Ivan Hoe, Columbia Research and the Whitcraft Corporation until his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion Post 183, Ballouville and served as Department Commander in 1969.
In addition to his devoted wife of 53 years, Irene, he leaves his sons: Michael Roy and his wife Patricia (Cournoyer) of East Woodstock; David Roy of Somerville, MA, his daughter: Diane (Roy) Weisman and her husband David of Sudbury, MA Mr. Roy was blessed with the love of four grandchildren, Melissa and Jeremy Roy, Jared and Ethan Weisman and a niece Kathleen Roy Chamberlain of Moosup.

Allen W. Bourdia
Allen W. Bourdia, 53, of South Frontage Road, Danielson, died unexpectedly at home, Monday, June 29, 2009, as a result of an accident. Husband of Rita (Bomster) Bourdia, they were married July 1, 1990. He was born June 10, 1956 in Putnam, son of Joan (LaFontaine) Bourdia of Danielson and the late Lionel Bourdia.
Allen worked as a machine operator at Loos and Company in Pomfret for the last twenty two years. He had made his home on South Frontage Road for the past year, moving from Hartford Pike in Dayville. He and his wife operated a Tee Shirt Business at area fairs for eighteen years. He enjoyed gardening and fishing, spending time with his family and friends.
He leaves in addition to his wife Rita and his mother Joan; a daughter: Judith Sherman and her husband Thomas of Moosup; a sister: Debra Diaz of Webster, MA; a brother: Randy Bourdia of Danielson; step-daughters: Melissa Clark; Jennifer Buell both of Moosup; seven grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Friday at 8:30 AM from the Gagnon and Costello Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 AM at ST James Church, 12 Franklin Street, Danielson. Calling Hours Thursday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.
Patrick C. Lester, Jr.
Patrick C. Lester, Jr., 60 of Mechanic Street, Danielson, died June 26, 2009 in the Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam. He was the husband of the late Mamie J. ( Shockley) Lester, she died in 1995.
He was born January 28, 1949 in New Rochelle, New York, a son of Patrick C. and Blanche (Greene) Lester. He had made his home in the Danielson area most of his life. He was a 1967 graduate of Killingly High School. Pat was very devoted to his family especially his boys, he was always looking out for their well being. Pat had worked for the Salvation Army, a driver for Whole Life and was a furniture inspector. Pat was a big movie buff.
He leaves his two sons: Christian Lester of PA; Jon Paul Lester of Danielson; his fiancee Diana Streb of RI.
