Minnie Anna Reynolds
Minnie Anna Reynolds, of Chase Road, Thompson, died Sunday, June 14, 2009 at the Day Kimball Hospital after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Allen N. Reynolds, he died in 1998. She was born in East Putnam May 15, 1920, daughter of Henry and Mabel (Baker) Bennett.
She had made her home in Thompson all her life, a member of the Thompson Congregational Church. She was an avid gardener growing flowers and vegetables, she also enjoyed bird watching. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
She leaves her children: David Reynolds of Thompson; Warren Reynolds of Thompson; Judith Bousquet of Putnam; Laura Reynolds of Thompson; grandchildren: Scott; Michael; Nathan; Mathew; Robert; Mary; Jody; six great-grandchildren, a nephew: James Bennett and his wife Shirley of Montville. She was predeceased by a brother: John Bennett in 1991.
Funeral services and burial will be private. Donations may be made in her memory to the Day Kimball Hospital Oncology Unit or the Hospice Unit, both at PO Box 632, Putnam, CT 06260. The Smith and Walker Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Linda Babbitt
Linda Babbitt, 56, of Quinebaug, CT died July 3, 2009 at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester. She was born in New Brunswick, NJ, daughter of John Dunn and Dorothy (Fries) Lee.
She had made her home in Quinebaug for the last five years; most of her life in Putnam. She attended the New Hope Church in Putnam. She worked in real estate. She will be remembered as a very generous person and had great love for her grandchildren.
She leaves a daughter: Laura Babbitt of Upton, MA; grandchildren: Kylie, Amber, Holli. Siblings: Sharon Palcic of Pomfret Center; Patricia McFarland of Dayville; Cheryl Dunn of Las Vegas; Richard Dunn of Pomfret; William Dunn of RI; Thomas Dunn of Danielson; Christopher Dunn of Danielson; Dennis Dunn of Canada; John Dunn of Fort Meyer, FL. She was predeceased by brothers Bobbie and Kevin.
A memorial service will be held on Friday at 5:00 PM at the Smith and Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam.
William "Bill" M. Simmons
William "Bill" M. Simmons, age 70, of Lakeview Street, Thompson, CT, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, July 18, 2009, after a courageous battle with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. Bill was the very beloved husband of Ruth Simmons for 15 years. He was the eldest of three sons born to William B. and Angela (Ordorica) Simmons both of whom predeceased him in July 2003 and March 2008 respectively. Bill was predeceased by his brother, James E. Simmons and James's beloved wife, Barbara. Bill is survived by his brother Edward J. Simmons and his wife Georgina of Mexico City, Mexico; three sons, Roy J. Simmons of Putnam, CT, and his wife, Kimberley, William A. Simmons of Ballouville, CT, and Robert J. Simmons of Roanoke, TX; three stepchildren, Roxanne Rhault of Mystic, CT, Ronald Rhault and his wife, Erin of Killingly, CT, and Valarie (Rhault) Haggerty and her husband, Tim of Millville, MA. Bill leaves his beloved Aunt Esther Schibilia of Hackettstown, NJ and also leaves seven grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, cousins, and countless friends.
Bill was born in New Brunswick, NJ on July 1, 1939 and resided in Putnam, CT for the majority of his life. He graduated from Putnam High School in June 1957 and attended Harvard H. Ellis Technical School, graduating from the Aviation Maintenance Program in June 1960. He enlisted in the United States Army Reserve on September 1961 and served on active duty until September 1964. He spent the majority of his Army tour assigned to the U.S. Army 334th Transportation Detachment (CHFM) in Fort Richardson, Alaska. Bill was Honorably Discharged from the Army Reserve on 1 August 1967.
In 1964, after completing his Army active duty tour, Bill was employed by Trans World Airlines (TWA), at Kennedy International Airport, as a line-mechanic. Following a short, three-year stint with TWA, Bill accepted a teaching position at Harvard H. Ellis Technical School, working side-by-side with his Father Bill teaching in the school's Aeronautics Department. He eventually succeeded his Father as the Aviation Maintenance Program Department Head and retired after 28 years of teaching on July 1, 1994. Following his teaching career, Bill started and was President and CEO of New England Aero Services, Inc., based at the Danielson, CT, Airport until January 2009. Throughout his career in aviation, Bill achieved numerous certifications and licenses, including his pilot's license. He was the recipient of the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) General Aviation Maintenance Technician of the Year Award in 2003 and 2004, the FAA Good Friend Award in October 2006, and the FAA Distinguished Mechanic Examiner Award in March 2007.
Bill was a dedicated and proactive public servant and was heavily involved in the Putnam, CT political scene for nearly 19 years. Known as the "voice of fiscal conservatism," he served on several committees and in numerous capacities, most notably as a member of the Putnam Board of Selectmen.
Bill was born to fly and his true passion was flying and restoring vintage airplanes. He was a member of the International Aviation Fraternal Organization, Quiet Birdmen. He was an air show performer with Warplanes International, and a member of both the Experimental Aircraft Association and War Birds of America.
Bill and Ruth enjoyed traveling and did so often. As a couple, and very often with friends, they managed to travel to nearly all of the United States, including Alaska which was one of Bill's favorite places on Earth. They also traveled throughout the world, "stepping foot" on all seven continents.
Bill was a man of many passions, talents, and hobbies. In addition to flying and world travel, Bill loved hosting get-togethers for family and friends at his lakefront home and did so often. He enjoyed working on automobiles and in the late 1950's he was a founding member of the "Hot Sparks" Car Club in Putnam, CT. He was an avid NASCAR and Indy Car enthusiast and enjoyed scuba diving, snow and water skiing, motorcycle riding, boating, and snowmobiling. In Bill's own words, "I don't want to leave any stones unturned when I die." As both his family and friends can attest, he most assuredly accomplished this goal!
Bill's funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 24, 2009 at the Putnam United Methodist Church, 51 Grove Street, Putnam, followed by burial with Military Honors at the Grove Street Cemetery, Putnam, CT. Brian C. Berthiaume
Brian C. Berthiaume, age 28, of Liberty Lane, Thompson, CT, died Monday, July 20 from injuries sustained in an motorcycle accident. He was the beloved son of Kevin and Elaine (Gelineau) Berthiaume of Thompson. Born July 18, 1981 in Putnam, he had made his home in Thompson all his life.
He was a 1999 graduate of the Tourtellotte Memorial High School where he excelled in sports - Baseball as a Pitcher and shortstop, and cross country. He enjoyed Fishing and Jet Skiing with his son. Brian was a machinist; he had worked for several years at Rol-A-Vac in Dayville, CT. He was a big Boston Red Sox and Patriots Fan.
He leaves in addition to his Father and Mother, a son: Aden Berthiaume and his mother Amanda Millett of Thompson; a sister: Kristin Berthiaume of Webster, his Maternal Grandmother: Dorothy Gelineau of Webster; Paternal Grandparents: George and Eileen Berthiaume of Webster; his best friend Chad Quinn and the "Liberty Lane Boys", and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Bernard "Bernie" Garnier, Sr.
Brooklyn - Bernard "Bernie" Garnier, Sr., 68, of Wauregan Road, Brooklyn, died unexpectedly Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam. He was the husband of 46 years to Sharon (Lamphere) Garnier, they were married October 28, 1961 at ST Thomas Apostle Church in Plainfield, she died in 2007. He was born May 8, 1941 in Putnam, son of the late Alphonse H. Garnier and the late Irene (Kempf) Cotnoir.
He made his home in Brooklyn most of his life, a communicant of Sacred Heart Church. Bernie was a painter, employed by Electric Boat in Groton for the last 40 years, and was Head of the Paint Shop at the time of his death. He loved fishing, the Red Sox, and the New England Patriots. Bernie enjoyed refurbishing antique John Deere Tractors out and woodworking. Bernie's greatest joy was his family, he was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother.
He leaves his two sons: Bernard A. Garnier, Jr.; David and his fiancee Karen of Sterling; his daughter: Becky Dutremble and her fiance Randy of Canterbury, three sisters: Barbara Jandreau of Colchester; Beverly Belanger of Lady Lake, FL; Donna Manseau and her husband Arthur of Brooklyn, grandchildren: Jennifer Garnier; Brandon Dutremble; Kaitlin Dutremble, two great grandchildren Abigail and Keira Rabideau. In addition to his wife he was predeceased by a son-in-law James Dutremble in 2002.

Mathieau Krzywda
Mathieau Krzywda of Danielson, Connecticut, passed away July 29th. He was ninety-two-years old. Mr. Krzywda grew up in Wauregan.
During WWII, from 1942 to 1945, he served with the Fourth Armored Division as a heavy machine-gunner, a scout and a water purification technician. He later worked as a hydraulic bender operator at InterRoyal Corp, in Plainfield, for 38 years. Mr. Krzywda was a communicant of St. James Church. His favorite pastimes were fishing, gardening, Red Sox baseball, and UConn basketball.
Mathieau is survived by Stella, his wife of sixty-five years, his son Steven and his grandchildren, Vanessa (ne Wlaskiewicz) McGuirk, and Matthew Rodgers Krzywda. Other survivors include Pamela Rodgers of Putnam, Paul McGuirk of Quaker Hill, Joe Wlaskiewicz of Dayville, Wanda Soler of Danielson and several other nephews. Mathieau died peacefully in his sleep, a loving and devoted husband, until his very last breath.
Visiting hours at the Gagnon and Costello Funeral Home, 33 Reynolds Street, Danielson are on Tuesday, August 4th, from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Mass will then be celebrated at St. James Church, 12 Franklin Street, Danielson at 11:00. Mr. Krzywda will be interred at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Wauregan, beside his beloved daughter Marlene. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that people donate to their favorite charity or church.

Chloe Kathryn Marie (Krise) Farner, 77 and Robert George Farner, 81, formerly of Springville, NY, died tragically Saturday, August 1, 2009 on I-395 North in Webster, MA, after visiting family in Connecticut. They were married May 27, 1952 in Springville, NY. Beloved husband and wife for 57 years.
Loving parents of Robert Farner, Jr. and his wife Barbara of New Oxford, PA formerly of LeRoy, NY, Steven Farner and his wife Kathy of Putnam, CT, Becky Evans of Marble Falls, TX, Susan Keller and her husband Glenn of Oklahoma City, OK, David Farner and his wife Laura of Somerset, PA, Melissa Allen and her husband Howard of Rochester, NY. Chloe was the daughter of the late Webster M. and Helen (Holzbauer) Krise, she was a Registered Nurse and retired as Director of Nursing at Bertrand Chaffee Hospital in Springville NY. Robert was the son of the late Peter J. and Ina (Witt) Farner. He was the Plant Supervisor at the O-AT-KA Milk Plant in Collins Center, NY. Robert and Chloe were members of Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church in Springville, NY.
They were loving and caring parents, grandparents and great grandparents, who after raising their family fulfilled their retirement dream of traveling as full time RV'ers for the last 17 years across country each year visiting their children, grandchildren and friends along the way. Adrian "Buzz" Joseph Bessette
Adrian "Buzz" Joseph Bessette, 86, of Maple Lane, Thompson, died Sunday, August 2, 2009 at the Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Viola (Beausoleil) Bessette, they were united in marriage September 5th, 1949, she died October 13, 1995. He was born September 13, 1922 in Providence, RI son of the late Joseph and Blanche (Cote) Bessette.
He was sergeant in the Army Air Corp during WWII He was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, and the Victory Medal WWII. He made his home in the Thompson and Grosvenordale area all his life. He was a communicant of ST Mary Church of the Visitation in Putnam, he played semi-pro baseball and played against Joe DiMaggio in Williams Field in Tempe, AZ, an avid golfer and longstanding member of Quinitisset Country Club and played for Webster Colonials Football Team as a young man.. He worked as a screw machine operator for Kramer in Old Saybrook for 35 years. After retiring at the age of 65 he worked for Conntrol in Putnam. He was a member of American Legion Post 67 and served as past commander.
He leaves his daughter Pamela Bessette and her husband David Kanter of Thompson, siblings Rita Johnsen of N. Fort Meyers, FL. George and his wife Barbara of Fall River, MA, Richard and his companion Mary D'Anna of Cape Coral, FL, Claire ST Jean and her husband Jerry of Putnam, Alice Coderre of Putnam, many nieces and nephews, two special people Zachary and Lauren Putnam of Thompson.
Funeral Service will be Thursday August 6, 2009 at 11:00 AM at the Smith and Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam followe by burial with Military Honors in ST Mary Cemetery, Putnam. Larry Rawson
Larry Rawson, 56, of Nogal, New Mexico, died Friday evening July 31,2009 in the mountains of Nogal due to a four wheeler accident. Larry was born January 14, 1953 in Putnam, CT to Blanche and Richard Rawson.
He graduated from Putnam High School and then went on to forestry school at Paul Smiths in the Adirondacks of New York. He then went to H.H. Ellis Technical School in Danielson, CT. He moved on to create a business of his own called L.E. Rawson Electrical Supply as well as a John Deere dealership in Thompson, CT. He then made a decision to move to Ruidoso, NM where he made a living working as a carpenter. Larry loved the outdoors and the Mountains of New Mexico where he called home for 15 years.
Larry is survived by a daughter, Caitlin E. Rawson of Herkimer, NY, his parents Blanche and Richard Rawson of Thompson, and two brothers, Alan and wife Kathleen Rawson of Putnam, and James and wife Donna Rawson of Thompson, and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his good friend Marvin and wife Norma Roberts of Nogal, NM. Larry will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

Mary Ryan Macdonald
Mary Ryan Macdonald, age 76, of Alexander's Lake, a long time Pomfret Resident, died Monday, August 3, 2009 at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. She was the beloved wife of 55 years of John T. Macdonald. She was born January 13, 1933 in Worcester, daughter of the late William E. and Albina T. (Woznicki) Ryan.
Mary received her Registered Nursing Degree in 1953 from Memorial Hospital. A communicant of Most Holy Trinity Church, she was elected and served two terms on The Pomfret Library Board, was a Justice of the Peace, a commodore of the Pontefract Boat Club, a member of the Alexander Lake Yacht Club and a proud member of Red Sox Nation. Mary was the school nurse at the Rectory School for several years.
She leaves in addition to her husband John, four sons: John Macdonald, Jr. and his wife Julieanne of West Hartford; James Macdonald of Georgetown, SC; Jeffrey Macdonald and his wife Rhonda of Vienna, VA; Scott Macdonald and his wife Sylvia of Media, PA; grandchildren: Sarah; Skye; Aedan; Kelly; Ryan; Danny; Michael and John.

Edwin Selden Smith
Pomfret Center - Edwin Selden Smith, 89, died at the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center in Worcester on Tuesday August 4, 2009. Born on December 14, 1919 and raised in the Yalesville section of Wallingford (where he was known as Selden), he was son of the late Otis S. and Ethel May Smith. He was predeceased by sister, Norma E. Smith and first wife, Lois Clark Smith. A graduate of Trinity College in Hartford Connecticut, Ed was a plastic development engineer at Rogers Corporation in Rogers, Connecticut and held patents in the field.
He is survived by his wife, Rosina Heckendorf Smith, three children, Alice Naqvi Mugler and husband Rick Mugler of Palo Alto, California, Edwin S. Smith, Jr. and wife Cathy Smith of Edwards, Colorado, and Marjorie L. Smith and partner Walter Wanagel of Lisbon, Connecticut as well as their children Jack, Jasmin, Jeff, Kelly, Suzie, Sarah and Chris and seven great grandchildren. In addition he is survived by step-children, Dana Heckendorf and wife Trudy, Amos Heckendorf and wife Christine, and Mike Heckendorf and partner Carolyn Wagner as well as step grandchildren, Bob, Dana Lee, Christian, Elissa, William and Bryan and two stepgreat grandchildren. He was proud of the entire family.
He was known for his dry sense of humor and puns, love of singing, exploring country back roads, and being the best packer ever, a skill which he passed on to his children. He was very active in the First Baptist Church of Willimantic and served on statewide American Baptist committees including the board of the Pierce Memorial Baptist Home. He was most recently a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Brooklyn, Ed's faith guided his actions in life and he lived his convictions every day.
