Sergio Berti

Sergio Berti of Putnam, Connecticut passed away peacefully in the arms of his wife on August 9, 2009. Sergio was born in Santa Giustina bordering Rimini, Italy, the son of Aldo Berti and Ines (Simonzi) Berti (deceased). He moved to Putnam with his family at the age of thirteen.

Sergio worked at American Optical and retired after forty seven years. After retirement Sergio enjoyed working as a realtor with Loomis Real Estate. He served in United States Army and was stationed in Korea. Sergio met and married his wife of thirty three years, Leah Berti. He was highly respected for his kindness, caring, generosity, and devotion to his family and friends. Sergio was also an avid hunter, horseman, and sports fan especially the Red Sox. Sergio loved traveling to Italy and being with his family and friends. He remained a dedicated and devoted husband, brother, uncle, God father and friend throughout his life. Known for his spirit, kindness, courage and strength of character Sergio will be sorely missed by his wife, Bella, family and friends forever.

In addition to his wife, Sergio leaves a sister Anita Rossi, of Putnam, and is also survived his nieces and nephews: Edie Rossi Pearce, (George) of Woodstock, CT, Mary Ann Rossi, (Don Hoenig), of Thompson, CT, two nephews, Bruno Rossi (Donna) of Thompson, CT, Enzo Rossi (Donna) of Buffalo, WY, Norman Berti of Burlington, ME, Ronnie Berti (Ilene) of Thompson, CT, Arlene Lamothe (Roger) of Putnam, and two God children, Laura Pearce and Melissa Rossi, nephew, Jason Pratt (Megan), niece, Stacie Dolby, (Jeremhy) all of Cape Cod, MA. and many great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Dino Berti and a sister Nella Palombo (John). Sergio enjoyed sixteen years after being diagnosed with cardiomyopathy with his courage, support of his wife and family, and the dedication and care of Dr. Gerald Sullivan, Dr. Gerald Aurigemma, Dr. Theo Meyer, and Maggie Cabral, RN.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday evening, August 12, 2009 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street Putnam, Ct. The funeral will be 10:15 AM, Thursday, August 13, 2009 from the Smith and Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM at ST Mary Church, 218 Providence Street, Putnam. Burial with Military Honors in ST Mary Cemetery, Putnam. Julie Markley

Julie Markley, 67, of Seely Brown Village, Deerfield Road, Pomfret Center, CT, died Monday, August 10, 2009 at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, MA. She was the wife of the late Edward J. "Butch" Markley, Jr., he died in 2007. She was born November 10, 1941.

She had made her home in the Pomfret and Putnam area for over twenty years. Julie was a volunteer at the Day Kimball Hospital for several years. She was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and UCONN Women's Basketball fan. She also enjoyed her cat Precious. She will be remembered as a caring and compassionate person. She leaves no immediate family.

Calling Hours with a Prayer Service will be Monday, August 17, 2009 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Gagnon and Costello Funeral Home, 33 Reynolds Street, Danielson.

Elaine C. Bates

Elaine C. Bates, 63, of Gilman Street, Putnam, died unexpectedly Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at home. She was the beloved wife of the late Louis F. Bates, they were married May 23, 1971, he died December 7, 2006. She was born December 17, 1945 in Putnam, daughter of the late Henry "Rusty" and Edra Pearl (Morse) Lavallee.

She had made her home in Putnam all her life, a communicant of ST Mary of the Visitation Church, Putnam. She was a member of the Putnam Emblem Club and had held many offices. She had worked for over twenty five years in the Office at NADS in Pomfret. She was a member of the Quinnatisset Country Club and enjoyed playing golf. She also enjoyed bowling and bowled on the Women's League and on the Couples League at Friendly Bowl in Brooklyn. She was a girls softball coach and volunteered for the Putnam Little League. She was a big fan of the UConn Girls Basketball Program and was a season ticket holder to the Connecticut Sun Basket ball of the WNBA and an avid New England Patriots Fan.

She leaves three children: Shawn Bates and his wife Jennifer of Putnam; Stacy Bates-Trombley and her husband Tyler of Springfield, VT; Kyle Bates of Manchester, NH; two sisters: Janice Lavallee of Brooklyn; Edra "Cookie" Codding of Danielson; a brother: Tom Lavallee of Danielson; five grandchildren: Crystal; Kristopher; Kobie; Karson; Nevaeh. She was predeceased by a brother: Henry "Bobby" Lavallee.

Calling Hours will be Sunday, August 16, 2009 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Smith and Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam, CT. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the Putnam Fire Department Scholarship Fund, 189 Church Street, Putnam, CT 06260 or Putnam Recreational Department, Children's Activity Fund, 126 Church Street, Putnam, CT 06260.

Florence C. Monroe

Florence C. Monroe, 91, of Vina Lane, Brooklyn, formerly of Thompson, died peacefully Saturday evening, August 15, 2009 at the Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam. She was the beloved wife of the late Richard Winthrop Monroe, he died December 22, 1992. She was born September 19, 1917 in Pawtucket, RI, daughter of the late William H. and Alice (Collinson) Lester.

She had made her home in Thompson for over 35 years moving to Creamery Brook in Brooklyn in 2000. She was a devoted member of Christ Episcopal Church in Pomfret and she also attended the Trinity Episcopal Church in Brooklyn. She was a 1936 graduate of Bryant College; a member of the Betty Putnam Chapter of the OES and was a past Worthy Matron; a member of the Philia Chapter of the OES #13 in Chepachet, RI; and served the Order as Grand Representative to Iowa from Connecticut in the 1980's. Florence was a member of the Putnam Women's Club and had served as president and also was a member of the Brooklyn Grange. She will be remembered as a loving, caring and devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She had volunteered many hours at the Day Kimball Hospital and for the American Red Cross.

She leaves her children: David R. Monroe of Middletown, RI; Stephen P. Monroe of New London; Dr. Alice V. Ennis of Brooklyn; a brother: William H. Lester of Jamestown, RI; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren: nephews and nieces; she was predeceased by a son William C Monroe.

Funeral service will be Thursday, August 20, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Christ Episcopal Church, 527 Pomfret Street, Pomfret. Calling Hours will be Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Smith and Walker Funeral Home 148 Grove Street, Putnam. Burial in Oak Grove Cemetery, Pawtucket, RI. Memorial donations may be made to The Christ Church PO Box 21, Pomfret, CT 06258.

Rita M. Glinski

PUTNAM - Rita M. Glinski, 87, beloved wife of the late J. Stanley Glinski, died on August 17, 2009 at Matulaitis Nursing Home. Daughter of the late Omer and Cecilia Rivers, she was born in West Thompson, CT on September 30, 1921. She was a communicant of St. Mary Church of the Visitation.

She is survived by her children Paul C. Glinski (Janet) of Portland, CT, Michael J. Glinski (Christine) of Thompson, CT, and Janet M. Bates (Alan) of Putnam, CT. In addition she is survived by her grandchildren Mary Bjunes (Todd), Heather Chaale (Daniel), Michelle Shine (William), Kevin Glinski (Aleia), Michael Glinski, Alissa Bates, Scott Glinski, and Eric Bates; her great grandchildren Megan and Ryan Bjunes, Cailey and William Shine, and Brady and Addison Glinski; her sisters Margaret Magnan and Mary Hall. She was predeceased by a daughter Judith Dickenson, a brother Henry Rivers, and a sister Theresa Boutin.

Mrs. Glinski was last employed as a secretary in the Putnam School System. Over the years she also held positions at St. Mary Church of the Visitation, Belding Hemingway, and the U.S Government. She had been a volunteer at Day Kimball Hospital, St. Mary School, and the Putnam Democratic Town Committee. She enjoyed golf, painting, reading and traveling. She was a member of the North East Art Guild, The Putnam Travelers, Daughters of Isabella, and the Day Kimball Hospital Women's Board.

A mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 am Thursday, August 20, 2009 at St. Mary Church of the Visitation, 218 Providence Street, Putnam. Burial in St. Mary Cemetery, Putnam. Calling hours from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, Wednesday, August 19, 2009 and 9:00 to 9:45 am Thursday, August 20, 2009 at the Smith and Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam, CT.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the DKH Deary Memorial Fund, PO Box 632, Putnam, CT.

Howard E. Shippee

Howard E. Shippee, 93, of High Street, Dayville, died Thursday, August 27, 2009 at home, with his family and friends by his side. He was the beloved husband of Genevieve (Williams) Shippee, they were married October 11, 1941 in Putnam. He was born July 4, 1916 in Killingly, son of the late Ray A. and Evelyn (Paine) Shippee.

He had lived all his life in Dayville. He was a member of St. Albans Episcopal Church. Howard was a carpenter working with his father for several years. He also was a Park Ranger for the State of Connecticut and worked in the Maintenance Department at Hale Manufacturing in Ballouville and Stafford Springs, he retired in the 1980's. Howard enjoyed vegetable gardening, watching the Yankees and the UCONN Women's Basketball and working around his home.

In addition to his wife Genevieve of 68 years, he leaves his daughter Lora Erskine of Dayville, grandchildren Ray Erskine of Dayville, Erica Erskine of Dayville, several friends, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his step-mother, Mary Burns, sister Ruth Shippee and son-in-law Theodore Erskine.

The funeral will be Monday August 31, 2009 at 10:30 AM from the Gagnon and Costello Funeral Home, 33 Reynolds Street, Danielson followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 AM at St. Albans Episcopal Church, 254 Broad Street Danielson. Calling Hours will be Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Gagnon and Costello Funeral Home, burial in Westfield Cemetery, Danielson. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to Hospice of NE CT, PO Box 632, Putnam, CT 06260.

Robert J. Evans, Sr.

Robert J. Evans, Sr., 54, of Reynolds Street, Danielson, died Wednesday August 26, 2009 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born November 7, 1954 in Central Village, son of the late Theresa (Lambert) Evans and Howard W. Evans of Danielson.

He was employed for over fourteen years at Loos and Company, working as a wire handler. He retired in 2008 due to poor health. He has made his home in the Plainfield-Killingly area all his life. Robert was active with the Danielson VFW 2650, for many years. He had a great sense of humor and was a caring and loving father and grandfather. He enjoyed camping, picnicking and family get-togethers. He had a great love for his grandchildren, and would always keep in touch with his family and friends. He was a "Dad" to many of his nephews and nieces.

He leaves his father, Howard Evans, Sr., of Danielson; his love and devoted partner, Katherine Kight of Danielson; his children: Jennifer Evans Cicarelli and her husband Louis of Danielson; Nicole Evans Walker and her husband Abram of Putnam; Robert J. Evans, Jr. of Danielson; Nathaniel Kight of E. Killingly; Kane Kight of Danielson; Asa Kight of Danielson; Tammy Lynn Williams of Madison, NC; his siblings: Howard Evans, Jr.; Edward Evans, David Evans all of Lincoln, ME; Arthur Evans of Windham; Theresa Hart of Brooklyn; his former wives Carlene Evans of Danielson; Deborah Evans of NC; his beloved grandchildren Brandon; Colin; Dakota; Olivia; Jayden, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, a special aunt Cora Lambert of Plainfield; He was predeceased by his siblings: Shirley Evans; Norman Evans; Jimmy Evans; Gilbert Evans; his step father, Leo Brisson. His family would like to thank Sue, Annie and Lee of the Connecticut VNA for the care that they gave to Robert.

Funeral Service will be Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at 11:00 AM in the Gagnon and Costello Funeral Home, 33 Reynolds Street, Danielson, CT. Calling hours on Monday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers donations to the American Lung Association, 45 Ash Street, Hartford, CT 06108 or to his family.

Beatrice L. Bonner

Beatrice L. Bonner, 73, of Clearwater, FL formerly of N. Grosvenordale, died peacefully in her sleep Sunday, August 30, 2009. She was the wife of the late George Bonner, Jr., he died in 1974. She was born March 9, 1936 in Thompson, daughter of the late Albert and Donalda (Gaumond) Houle.

She lived most of her life in N. Grosvenordale, residing the last several years with her longtime friend, Roger Hollister in Clearwater, FL. She leaves four children, Albert Bonner of Thompson, Richard Bonner of Thompson, John Bonner of Thompson, Joanne Blain of Thompson, 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

A Memorial Mass will be 11:00 AM, Friday September 4, 2009 at ST Joseph Church, 12 Main Street, North Grosvenordale followed by burial in ST Joseph Cemetery. To share a memory, "Light a Candle" at www.smithandwalkerfh.com. Arrangements by Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam.

Leona P. Lariviere

Leona P. Lariviere, 82 of Thayer Street, Putnam, died Sunday, August 30, 2009 at Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam. She was the wife of the late Eugene Lariviere. He died July 8, 1999. Born August 10, 1927 in Webster, MA, daughter of the late Bruno and Stasia (Gajewski) Rothenburg. She was a communicant of ST Mary of the Visitation Church in Putnam. She enjoyed puzzles, collecting snowmen and visiting with her neighbors. She leaves her two daughters: Brenda and (Joesph) Burdick of Woodstock, Jean and (Michael) Viveiros of Putnam, grandchildren, Christopher Burdick of FL, Scott (Melissa) Adamuska of Thompson, granddaughter Brandy (Greg) Hapgood of Plainfield. The Funeral will be Thursday, September 3, 2009 at 9:30 am from the Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at ST Mary Church of The Visitation, 218 Providence Street, Putnam. Bernard Poitras

Bernard Poitras, 85, of Upper Maple Street, Danielson, died Monday, August 31, 2009 at home. He was the beloved husband of Cecile (Hebert) Poitras, who died May 4, 2003. He was born May 3, 1924 in Putnam, son of the late Luc and Claire (Boulais) Poitras.

He was a communicant of ST James Church in Danielson, and was one of the original founders of ST James Bazaar. He was active in Boy Scouts as a leader. He was a veteran of WWII serving as a Sgt. with the Army Corp of Engineers. He worked at SNET as a telephone installer for 37 years until retirement.

He leaves his daughter: Lynn M. Lambert of Danielson, four sons: Thomas B. (Corinne) Poitras of Helena, MT, Mark (Fran) Poitras of Danielson, Dennis (Mary Ann) Poitras of Ashford, Glenn (Leslie) Poitras of Chepachet, RI, his siblings, Margaret Ducat of Danielson, Estelle LaPlante of Ellsworth, ME, Henrietta Monahan of Nevada, grandchildren Mark Poitras Jr.; Luke Poitras; Ben Poitras; Cordell Cudworth III; Adam Cudworth; Connie Czmyr, many nieces and nephews and his caregiver for the last five years, his special friend, Barbara McShane. He was predeceased by siblings, Claire Veillieux, Lorraine Sugalski, Armand Poitras, Camille Poitras.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:15 AM, Friday, September 4, 2009 at ST James Church, 12 Franklin Street, Danielson. Louis E. Jussaume, Jr.

Louis E. Jussaume, Jr., 95, of North Main Street, Dayville, died Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at the Westview Health Center, Dayville. He was the beloved husband of Stella (Beaulac) Jussaume, she died October 20, 1999. He was born July 31, 1914 in West Warwick, RI, son of the late Louis E. and Rose (Dufault) Jussaume, Sr.

He was a communicant of St Anne's Church in Ballouville. He attended local schools and operated his own seafood business West Warwick, RI. In 1936 he moved to the Danielson area. He worked in the textile industry as a weaver and inspector. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and spending time with his family.

He leaves a son: Ronald Jussaume of Dayville, grandchildren, Randall Jussaume; Julie Jussaume; Scott Jussaume; step granddaughter, Sophie Lemieux; great grandchildren, Paige Jussaume; Cole Jussaume; step great grandchildren, Danielle Lemieux; Justin Lemieux and a special friend Lorraine Beaulac of Putnam. He was predeceased by a sister, Jean Lambert, a grandson, Marc Jussaume, a step granddaughter, Roxanne Duhamel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, September 4, 2009 at 11:00 AM at ST Joseph Church, 350 Hartford Pike, Dayville. Calling Hours are 7:00 to 9:00 PM Thursday, September 3, 2009 at the Smith and Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam. Burial in ST Joseph Cemetery, Dayville. Donations may be made in his memory to the charity of the donor's choice.

Angeline Derosier

Angeline Derosier, 89, of Kenwood Drive, New Britain, CT, formerly of Woodside Street in Putnam, died Monday, August 31, 2009 at the Jerome Home in New Britain, CT. She was the wife of the late, George Derosier, he died in 2007. She was born October 13, 1919 in Longsdale, RI, daughter of the late Dominic and Pasqualina Varavallo.

She lived in Putnam all of her life until moving to New Britain two years ago. She was vice-president of the Local Union at Putnam Woolen Mill, where she worked with former Governor Dempsey, and also worked at the A.O. in Putnam. She and George traveled extensively throughout Europe and North Africa. George even learned to dance so they could enjoy dancing.

She leaves her daughter: Patricia Jaworski Sgueglia and her husband Robert of New Britain, several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family in the Hartford area. She was predeceased by her husband George February 23, 2007 and her first husband Nicholas A. Jaworski in 1967.

Funeral Service will be Saturday, September 5, 2009 at 9:30 AM from the Smith and Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in ST Mary Church of the Visitation, 218 Providence Street, Putnam, CT. Calling Hours Friday from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam. Burial in ST Mary Cemetery, Putnam. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be sent to Saint Mary's School.
