S. Thomas Wellman III,
a resident of Toledo, Ohio, died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2000 at home. He was 57.
He died of cancer, according to his family.
Born March 21, 1943, in Cleveland, he was a son of Lois Gilbert Wellman of Gates Mills, Ohio, and the late Samuel T. Wellman II.
Mr. Wellman was an associate editor of the Toledo Blade.
He was an alumnus of Lake Forest College and the University of Missouri School of Journalism.
He worked for the Paddock Publications newspaper chain in Arlington Heights, Ill., from 1968 to 1976 and for the Lindsay-Schaub newspaper chain in Decatur, Ill., from 1976 until he joined the Blade in 1979.
Mr. Wellman was a member of the National Conference of Editorial Writers and past president of the Association of Opinion Page Editors. He served as president and treasurer of the Northwest Ohio Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. He was a member of the Sylvania United Church of Christ and a board member of the Grace Community Center.
Mr. Wellman traveled frequently and wrote extensively about German issues for the Blade's editorial and opinion pages.
He was a photographer whose pictures ran in the Blade. He enjoyed reading, theater, travel, fishing and sports.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Wellman is survived by his wife, Nancy Wellman of Toledo, formerly of Stamford; a brother, Gilbert Wellman of Gates Mills; a sister, Latifa Weinman of Taos, N.M.; one niece, three nephews and two great-nieces.
Calling hours will be 3 to 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, 2000 at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave., Toledo.
Calling hours will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, the Sylvania United Church of Christ in Toledo.
A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at the Sylvania United Church of Christ in Toledo.

Chung Yuan Chao,
a Stamford resident, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000 at Stamford Hospital. He was 91.
He died of heart failure, according to his family.
Born Sept. 16, 1908, in Fuzhou, China, he was the son of the late Chung Jeng Chao and Shui Inn Li.
In China, he worked as a lawyer with Central Trust Bank of China.
Mr. Chao left Shanghai and moved to the United States with his family in November 1949. He lived in New York City and then Long Island, N.Y., until 1987, when he moved to Stamford.
After receiving his master's degree in business administration from Columbia University School of Business, Mr. Chao worked as a self-employed investment consultant.
He is survived by two sons, Thomas Chao of East Lyme and Dr. Andrew Chao of San Jose, Calif.; two daughters, Shirley Shih of Stamford and Helen Tu of Los Angeles; a sister, Yueting Lin of Taiwan; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a niece and four nephews.
Calling hours will be 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000 at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford.
A service will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Lyman Taylor will officiate.
Burial will follow in Fairfield Memorial Park in Stamford.
Dorothy J. Koczanski,
a longtime Stamford resident, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000 at Courtland Gardens in Stamford. She was 79.
She died of heart failure, according to her family.
Born June 16, 1921, in Port Chester, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Raymond D. and Helen Murphy MacNicholl.
Mrs. Koczanski was a singer. She and her two sisters sang in theaters nationwide as the "Murphy Sisters" in the 1930s and 1940s.
She had solo career under the name "Dottie Evans," singing in radio and television commercials. She was a backup singer for Perry Como and Johnny Mathis. She also sang on the theme song for the television show "Candid Camera."
She is survived by a son, Michael Koczanski of Wilton; a daughter, Jane Jordan of Stamford; a brother, Rod MacNicholl of Glen Spey, N.Y.; and a grandson.
She was predeceased by her husband, Elmer Koczanski; and two sisters, Muriel Robinson and Marge Smith.
Calling hours will be 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000 at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000 at St. Leo's Church, 24 Roxbury Road, Stamford.
Burial will follow in Queen of Peace Cemetery
in Stamford.
Harry F. Miller Sr.,
a longtime Stamford resident, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000 at Stamford Hospital. He was 91.
He died of heart failure, according to his family.
Born May 31, 1909, in Union City, N.J., he was a son of the late Frederick and Stephanie Richter Miller.
Mr. Miller worked as a master model maker at Pitney Bowes for more than 36 years before retiring. He was an honorary member of the German American Club in Stamford.
He is survived by his wife, Hildegard Miller of Stamford; a son, Harry F. Miller Jr. of Stamford; a daughter, Arlene S. Miller of Stamford; a brother, Frederick Miller of Utica, N.Y.; two sisters, Frances McDonough of Stamford and Sonya Hoegeman of New Milford; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by a sister, Ellen Peterson.
Calling hours will be 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000 at Bouton & Reynolds Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000 at the funeral home.

Luigi Vitiello,
a Greenwich resident, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000 at Greenwich Hospital. He was 83.
The cause of death has not been determined, according to his family.
Born Jan. 8, 1917, in Ponza, Italy, he was a son of the late Carmine and Esterina Pagano Vitiello.
Mr. Vitiello served in the Italian navy during World War II. He emigrated to the United States in 1968. He worked at DaVinci's Restaurant and That Little Italian Restaurant, both in Greenwich, before retiring three years ago.
He was an avid gardener and sailor.
He is survived by his wife, Rita Vitiello of Greenwich; two daughters, Esther Lebreton and Libera Stimma, both of Greenwich; two sons, Paolo Vitiello and Aniello Vitiello, both of Greenwich; a brother, Adelmo Vitiello of Long Island, N.Y.; two sisters, Sister Silveria Vitiello of Rome, Italy, and Immacolata Marraffa of Ponza; and 10 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Nicola Vitiello and Giuseppe Vitiello; and two sisters, Giovannina Vitiello and Margherita Vitiello.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000 at Castiglione Funeral Home, 134 Hamilton Ave., Greenwich.

Florence Catherine Crowley Clayton,
a lifelong Stamford resident, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000 at Stamford Hospital. She was 75.
She died of cancer, according to her family.
Born Sept. 26, 1924, she was a daughter of the late George and Anna Butler Crowley.
Mrs. Clayton was an executive secretary at Pitney Bowes before retiring in 1989. She belonged to Pitney Bowes Oval Club and Chapter 546 of the American Association of Retired Persons. She also volunteered at Stamford Senior Citizen Health Fair.
Mrs. Clayton was a grateful recipient of the Meals-on-Wheels and Hospice programs. She was an avid reader and an artist of oil paints on canvas.
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Ann Hanlyen Fabrizio of Vernon and Gloria Jean Hanlyen McAndrew of Milford; two brothers, James Crowley of West Palm Beach, Fla., and George Crowley Jr. of Hemet, Calif.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Clayton was predeceased by her first husband, Oswald John Hanlyen Sr.; her second husband, Robert William Clayton; and two sisters, Bernice Crowley Springer and Ann Crowley Franco.
