Esther Bernstein,
a longtime New York resident, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000 at the Tandet Center. She was 91.
She died of heart failure, according to her family.
Born Aug. 8, 1909, in New York City, she was a daughter of the late Abraham and Sadie Beck Barth.
She was a member of the Knights of Pythias of New York City and worked as a secretary for various businesses. She lived at the Tandet Center in Stamford for 11 years.
She is survived by a son, Sim Bernstein of Stamford; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Sidney Bernstein; a son, Dr. Arnold Bernstein; and two brothers, Irving Barth and Edmund Barth.
Shiva will be observed at the home of Sim Bernstein.
A funeral will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000 at Bouton & Reynolds Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford.
Burial will follow in Mt. Hebron Cemetery
in Queens, N.Y.

Richard F. Knoess,
a resident of Coconut Creek, Fla., died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000 at a private hospice residence in Plantation, Fla. He was 53.
He died of brain cancer, according to his family.
Born Sept. 17, 1946, in Bronx, N.Y., he was the son of Herman Knoess of Rowayton and the late Rita Mahoney Knoess.
A former Stamford resident, Mr. Knoess was a 1965 graduate of Rippowam High School. He worked for Clairol, Inc., in Stamford before moving to Florida in 1985.
Besides his father, he is survived by his wife, Elaine Pasqua Knoess; two sons, Richard J. Knoess of Hialeah, Fla., and James V. Knoess of Plantation, Fla.; a daughter, Jill Knoess of Plantation, Fla.; a sister, Loretta Kryger of Rowayton; a brother, Lester Knoess of Norwalk; three granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000 at St. George Church in Lauderhill, Fla. Entombment was in Forest Lawn Cemetery
in Pompano Beach, Fla.
A local memorial Mass will be celebrated at a time and place to be announced.

Paul Regis Sullivan,
a resident of West Haven and a former resident of Stamford, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000 at St. Raphael Hospital in New Haven. He was 68.
He died of respiratory failure, according to his family.
Born July 1, 1932, in Brooklyn, New York, he was a son of the late John J. and Estelle Clair Donnelly Sullivan.
He was a retired traffic manager for the Excelsior Hardware Co., which was located in Stamford. He was the past exulted ruler of the former Elks Lodge of Greenwich #1150 and past secretary of the Stamford Elks Lodge #899. He was the Credential Chairman of the State Elks Association.
He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Stokes Sullivan of West Haven; and a daughter, Dorothy Sullivan of Rochester, N.Y.
Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000 at the Lacerenza Funeral Home, 8 Schuyler Ave., Stamford.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 11, 2000 at St. Mary's Church, 566 Elm St., Stamford.
Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery
in Milford.

John M. Cochran Sr.,
a Stamford resident, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000 at his home. He was 49.
He died of heart failure, according to his family.
Born Oct. 27, 1951, in Marion, S.C., he was a son of Edna L. Cochran of Marion, S.C., and the late Eugene Nelson Cochran.
He was a truck driver with the Doran Moving Co.
He is survived by three sons, U.S. Army Sgt. John M. Cochran Jr. of Fort Bragg, N.C., and Eugene Cochran and Raymond Cochran, both of Stamford; and three daughters, Nicola Cochran, Melody Cochran and Jessica Cochran, all of Stamford.
Funeral services and burial will take place in Marion, S.C.

JoAnn M. Teed,
a longtime Norwalk resident, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000 at Bridgeport Hospital.
She died of cancer, according to her family.
Born Nov. 11, 1954, in Stamford, she was the daughter of Theresa Uva Bruno of Norwalk and the late Joseph A. Bruno.
Mrs. Teed graduated from Norwalk High School in 1972. She graduated from Norwalk Community College, earned a bachelor's degree in special education at Southern Connecticut State University and received a master's degree in special education from Sacred Heart University.
She was a teacher at Joseph A. Foran High School in Milford for five years.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Jerald W. Teed of Norwalk; two daughters, Nicole Z. Teed and Teresa L. Teed, both of Norwalk; a son, John J. Teed of Norwalk; and two brothers, Angelo D. Bruno and Joseph A. Bruno, both of Norwalk.
Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 9, 2000 at Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave., Norwalk.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000 at St. Jerome Church, 23 Half Mile Road, Norwalk.
Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery
in Norwalk.

Henry Gordon Sims,
a Stamford resident, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000 at Courtland Gardens Nursing Center in Stamford. He was 98.
He died of natural causes, according to his family.
Born Aug. 21, 1901, in South Carolina, he was a son of the late Katie B. Sims and Charles H. Sims.
Mr. Sims' first career was spent traveling the rails around the United States as a Pullman porter with New York Central Railroad. He retired from the company as a conductor. His last career, from which he retired in 1994, was with Bongiorno's supermarket in Stamford.
Mr. Sims was an active member of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Stamford.
He is survived by his sister, Zella Kidd of Norwalk; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Sadye Thompson; two sons, Stanley Gordon Sims and Cromwell Calvin Sims; a daughter, Theresa Sims Seaborn; and three brothers, William Sims, Stanley Sims and Charles Sims.
Calling hours will be from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000 at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 150 Fairfield Ave., Stamford. The Rev. Winton M. Hill III will officiate.
A service will be held at noon in the church.
Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery
in Easton.

Helen Knapp McCarthy of Sarasota,
Fla., a former Greenwich resident, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000 at Pines of Sarasota Nursing Home. She was 93.
She died of natural causes, according to her family.
Born Aug. 20, 1906, in Stamford, she was the daughter of the late John and Margaret Weyerhaeuser.
Mrs. McCarthy moved from Greenwich to Sarasota in 1949. She managed Westover Beach Cottages in Longboat Key, Fla.
She was a member of the Sarasota Lioness Club, Incarnation Women's Guild and Sarasota Philatelic Club. She attended Incarnation Church in Sarasota.
She is survived by three daughters, Patricia Hetzler of Sarasota, Barbara K. Sharon of Stamford and Joan K. Taylor of Darien; 12 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Howard P. Knapp; and her second husband, Stanley J. McCarthy.
There are no calling hours.
A Memorial Mass was celebrated Monday, Aug. 7, 2000 at Incarnation Church.
