John J. "Billy" Hlavati,

a New Britain resident, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000 at Jerome Home in New Britain. He was 94.

He died of natural causes, according to his family.

Born Feb. 10, 1906, in New Britain, he was the son of Michael and Anna Teresiak Hlavati.

Mr. Hlavati operated Billy's Fruit Stand on West Main Street in New Britain from 1942 to 1982. He was a charter member of St. Maurice Church and served with the New Britain Auxiliary Police during World War II. He was a past exalted ruler of New Britain BPOE Lodge 957.

He is survived by two daughters, Virginia Phillips of New Britain and Mariane Dominice of Greenwich; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Rosick Hlavati.

Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000 at Farrell Funeral Home, 110 Franklin Square, New Britain.

A service will be at 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000 at the funeral home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. at St. Maurice Church, 100 Wightman Road, New Britain.

Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery in New Britain.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Celebrate Life Program at St. Maurice Church; or to the charity of one's choice.

Mildred N. Murphy,

a Stamford resident, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000 at St. Camillus Health Center. She was 96.

She died of natural causes, according to her family.

Born July 4, 1904, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Vincent Norako and Natalie Kaufman Norako.

Mrs. Murphy was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Leo's Church in Stamford.

She is survived by a daughter, Patricia M. Ayres of Stamford; three grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Sherman Murphy Jr.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Aug. 8, 2000 at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford.

A service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000 at St. Leo's Church, 24 Roxbury Road, Stamford.

Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien.

Lewis Finocchio,

83, a longtime Cos Cob resident and retired businessman, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000 at Avon Health Care Center in Avon.

He died of natural causes, according to his family.

Born Jan. 29, 1917, in Birmingham, Ala., he was the son of the late Joseph and Providence Fratelo Finocchio.

Mr. Finocchio lived in Cos Cob for more than 60 years before moving to Avon in June. He owned Homestead Oil Co. in Greenwich for 35 years.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

A former commodore of the Cos Cob Boat Club, Mr. Finocchio was an amateur boxer and avid musician.

He is survived by three sons, Raymond Finocchio of Avon, Lewis Finocchio Jr. of Pacific Palisades, Calif., and Don Finocchio of Wenham, Mass.; three sisters, Mary Tripodi and Frances Tripodi, both of Byram, and Rose Morganti of Port Chester; a brother, Mike Finocchio of Virginia; and eight grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Helen Belmont Finocchio; two brothers, Joseph Finocchio and Paul Finnochoio; and a sister, Josephine Fratelo.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch St.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Riverside.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Finocchio's memory may be made to Father Flanagan's Boys Home, Boys Town, Neb. 68010.

Anne Johnson

Anne Davis Johnson, a former Darien resident, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000 at Edgehill Lifecare Community in Stamford, where she had been living for the past year. She was 85.

She died of natural causes, according to her family.

Born March 25, 1915, in Portland, Maine, she was a daughter of the late Clinton W. and Mary D'Este Davis.

Mrs. Johnson attended St. Timothy's School in Maryland and the School of Interior Design of New York/Paris.

She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Darien and Woodway Country Club in Stamford. Mrs. Johnson belonged to the Connecticut Chapter of the Colonial Dames.

She is survived by a daughter, Susan Johnson Billard of Huntington Beach, Calif.; two sons, Peter Davis Johnson of Denver, Colo., and Robert Hale Johnson of Kauai, Hawaii; a brother, Clinton W. Davis Jr. of Santa Barbara, Calif.; one granddaughter and three grandsons; one step-grandson; one great-grandson and two step-great-grandchildren; a cousin and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Johnson was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Hale Johnson; a brother, Nicholas Davis; and a sister, Jane D. Born.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 11, 2000 at St. Luke's Episcopal Chapel, 1848 Post Road, Darien.

Burial is private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Cancer League of Colorado Inc., P.O. Box 5373, Englewood, CO 80155.

Matthew David Schiavoni,

a Stamford resident, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000 at Courtland Gardens Health Center. He was 20.

He died of respiratory failure after a long illness, according to his family.

Born Dec. 30, 1979, in Greenwich, he was a son of Linda Cowan and Philip Schiavoni, both of Stamford.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his stepmother, Maureen Schiavoni of Stamford; a brother, Peter Schiavoni of Stamford; a sister, Shannon Schiavoni, of Stamford; and his grandmothers, Molly Cowan and Lillian Schiavoni, both of Haverhill, Mass.

Burial took place in a private ceremony Monday, Aug. 7, 2000 at Long Ridge Cemetery in Stamford.

Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home of Stamford handled arrangements.

Teresa Spoto,

a Stamford resident, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000 at Atria Town Center in Stamford. She was 91.

She died of natural causes, according to her family.

Mrs. Spoto was born Oct. 5, 1908, in Rome, Italy.

She was a homemaker and, for many years, a volunteer in the pharmacy department of the former St. Joseph Medical Center in Stamford. In her later years, she volunteered at the Rehabilitation Center in Stamford.

Mrs. Spoto is survived by a son.

She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Spoto Sr.

There were no calling hours.

Funeral services and burial were private.

Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford, is handling arrangements.
