William F. Casey Jr., Ridgefield native

William Francis Casey Jr. of 5 West Pine Drive, Danbury, a Ridgefield native, died Thursday, June 28, at his home. He was 69 years old and the husband of Susan Saltanis Casey.
A member of an old Ridgefield family, Mr. Casey was born in Danbury, Jan. 21, 1932, the oldest son of the late William F. Casey Sr. and Nellie Baldwin Casey, who were both native Ridgefielders.
Mr. Casey grew up in Ridgefield and attended Ridgefield schools. He was a self-employed plumbing and heating contractor in the area for more than 40 years. He had owned Division Plumbing and Heating Supply and Casey Plumbing and Heating. He currently owned and operated Will’s Plumbing and Heating.
“Bill will be remembered for his sense of humor, quick wit, understanding nature and love of his family,” his family said. “He was fond of hunting and fishing at his camp in Vermont and spending time with his grandchildren.
Besides his wife, Mr. Casey is survived by two sons, Michael William Casey and his wife, Ann, of Haymarket, Va.; Stephen P. Casey and his wife, Frances, of Danbury; two daughters: Michele A. Schmidt and her husband, Jeffrey, of Danbury and Deborah F. Curtin and her husband, Christopher, of Aceworth, Ga.; two brothers: Charles Casey of New Fairfield and Richard Casey of Hill City, S.D.; two sisters, Carol Mitchell of Ridgefield and Kathleen Casey of Danbury; four grandchildren: Stephen F. Casey of Danbury, Lauren M. Schmidt of Danbury, Meghan S. Curtin and Courtney B. Curtin of Aceworth, as well as several nieces and nephews.
A daughter, Stephanie Joan Casey, and a sister, Betty Clark, died before him.
A graveside service took place at Wooster Cemetery, Danbury, Monday, July 2.

The Hull Funeral Home, 60 Division Street, Danbury, was in charge of arrangements.

Josephine M. Glowinski, homemaker

Josephine M. Glowinski of Bethel, a former longtime Ridgefielder, died Jan. 3 at Filosa Convalescent Home, Danbury. She was 87 years old and the widow of Joseph Glowinski.
Mrs. Glowinski was born in Jersey City, N.J., Aug. 23, 1915, the daughter of the late Joseph and Amelia Balcerak. She grew up in Greenwich, and later lived in Norwalk before moving to Ashbee lane in 1962. She and her husband, who died in 2000, lived here until around 1981. She had lived in Bethel for the past 20 years.
A homemaker, Mrs. Glowinski enjoyed both flower and vegetable gardening.
Mrs. Glowinski is survived by a son, John Glowinski of Ridgefield; three daughters, Marianne Honey of Martha’s Vineyard, Geri Soukup of Bethel and Joanne Livesay of Pipersville, Pa.; three sisters, Stell Gedney, Gen Walsh and Cel Heinchon; eight grandchildren, Michael Glowinski, Tammy Rauch, Elizabeth Crocker, Kate Honey, Cory Richards, Jessica Soukup, Rebecca Livesay and R.J. Livesay; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial mass was celebrated Monday at St. Mary’s Church in Bethel.
Hull Funeral Service of Danbury is in charge of arrangements.

Jean Yonkers, 75, retired secretary

Jean Crogent Yonkers of 134 Sleepy Hollow Road, a former secretary at Caldor headquarters and a longtime Ridgefielder, died on Tuesday, Dec. 17, at Laurel Ridge Nursing & Rehabilitation Center on Danbury Road. She was 75 years old and the wife of George H. Yonkers.
Mrs. Yonkers was born in New York City on April 12, 1927, the daughter of the late Albert and Rita Peters Crogent. She grew up in Yonkers, N.Y., and attended Yonkers schools, graduating from Gorton High School there. She went on to graduate from the Washington Secretarial School in New York City.
Mrs. Yonkers had been a secretary for many years at the Caldor department store corporate headquarters in Norwalk. Later, she was a marketing representative for American Express. She retired four years ago.
A resident of Ridgefield for the past 41 years, Mrs. Yonkers had been an active member of the former Eight Lakes Association and its Ladies Auxiliary, called the Laurels, and had belonged to various other community groups.
“Her life style was an active one with her passions being skiing, swimming, boating, and traveling,” her family said.
Besides her husband of 51 years, Mrs. Yonkers is survived by a son, Roy Yonkers of Danbury.
The Rev. Mark D. Allan of the First Congregational Church of Ridgefield will conduct services Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Kane Funeral Home, 41 Catoonah Street.
Burial will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Kane Funeral Home on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Irene Waterman, 77, active volunteer

Irene Wade Waterman, a resident of Ridgefield for the past seven years, died on Friday, Oct. 18, at Danbury Hospital. She was 77 years old and the widow of John Christian Waterman.
Mrs. Waterman was born in Buffalo, N.Y., on Jan. 23, 1925, a daughter of the late Augustine and Cecile Latchford Hockeborn, and spent most of her life in the Buffalo area. She had moved here from Tonawanda to be closer to her family.
Mrs. Waterman was valedictorian of her class at St. Nicholas High School and was a graduate of Bryant and Stratton Business Institute with an accounting secretarial degree.
She worked as an executive secretary at Western Auto during World War II.
While raising her two children after the war, Mrs. Waterman served as a tireless volunteer for the Canisius College Scholarship Fund and the St. Francis Hospital Guild for more than 20 years.
Mrs. Waterman is survived by her daughter, Diane Marie Waterman of Ridgefield; a son, Stephen Paul and his wife, Diane Louise Waterman of Wilton; one sister, Joan Marinaccio of Williamsville, N.Y.; and her grandchildren: John Patrick, William Christian, and Emily Anne Waterman. Her brother, Vincent Hockeborn, died before her.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial took place at St. Amelia’s Roman Catholic Church in Tonawanda on Monday, Oct 21.
Contributions in memory of Mrs. Waterman may be made to “Ann’s Place,” the home of I Can Cancer Support Services, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the support of those diagnosed with cancer and their families. Jean Lewis Beebe, teacher, shop owner

Jean Lewis Beebe, a former teacher and shop owner who was active in St. Stephen’s Church, died on Monday, Sept. 9, at her home on Florida Road surrounded by her family and pets. She was 71 years old and the wife of David Chapin Beebe Jr., her husband of 49 years.
Jean Evelyn Lewis Beebe was born on Oct. 4, 1930 in New York City, the younger of two children. Her father, Dr. Kenneth Lewis, was the head of the New York Medical Society and a renowned surgeon at Bellevue Hospital. Her mother, Evelyn, was active with the Altar Guild at the Episcopal “Church of the Heavenly Rest” in New York City.
Mrs. Beebe grew up in the city, with Central Park as her “backyard.” She graduated from the Brearley School in New York City and began her college studies for her first two years at Sweet Briar ColIege in Virginia before completing her undergraduate degree in 1953 at Connecticut College in New London. A month after graduation, she married her childhood sweetheart, David, on June 13, 1953 in New York City.
During her life she worked as a elementary school teacher and after raising three children, was the owner of a children’s and gift store, “The House at Pooh Corner” in Tenafly, N.J.
Upon retiring in 1989, the couple left Englewood, N.J., and relocated to Ridgefield where they bought a 1785 home, Bellwether, that had once been a stagecoach stop. She had been active with the Altar Guild and volunteered at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.
The Beebes liked to spend the summer and go boating in Pine Orchard, a section of Branford. She had summered in Pine Orchard as a child and at the age of 13 met her future husband there. Early in their marriage the Beebes sailed on the coast, and in recent years had turned to motor yachts, traveling the Eastern Seaboard as far south as the Florida Keys.
Mrs. Beebe was known affectionately as “Tabby,” a nickname that reflected her love of cats. She was also an accomplished flower gardener.
“Jean was known for her wonderful sense of humor and enjoyment pared with her infectious laugh, especially in the company of her family and friends,” her family said.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Beebe is survived by three children: Evelyn Beebe Handy and her husband Stephen of Ridgefield, David Chapin Beebe III and his wife Andrea of Ridgefield, and Scott Martin Beebe and his wife Brenda of Chatham, N.J.; by seven grandchildren: Jean Lucretia Handy, John David Beebe, and Ryan Scott Beebe of Ridgefield, and Vanessa Jean Beebe, Alyssa Helen Beebe, Katelyn Inez Beebe and Nicholas Scott Beebe of Chatham.
Her brother, Kenneth, died before her.
The Rev. John R. Gilchrist, rector, will lead a memorial service on Saturday Sept. 14, at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.
The family will receive guests in North Hall immediately after the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Danbury Hospital General Fund, 24 Hospital Avenue, Danbury, CT 06810.
The Kane Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Joseph A. Varilla, 65, Xerox executive

Joseph A. Varilla of 5 Ascot Way, who was a Xerox executive despite being quadriplegic, died on Saturday evening, Dec. 7, at his home. He was 65 years old and the husband of Joan Mucha Varilla.
Mr. Varilla was afflicted with multiple sclerosis and for the past dozen years, was a functional quadriplegic. He nonetheless served as director of communications support at Xerox headquarters in Stamford, riding back and forth each day in a van supplied and staffed by the company.
“Through Xerox’s willingness to provide a conducive, caring work environment and support system, Mr. Varilla was able to achieve great success in the corporate world,” his family said. “Priding himself as a workaholic and very tenacious, he was an inspiration to all who knew him and won their admiration.”
A native of Freeland, Pa., Mr. Varilla was born on Aug. 11, 1937, a son of the late Andrew and Helen Bartkovich Varilla. He attended Freeland schools and graduated from Mining and Mechanical Institute Preparatory School in Freeland. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa., in 1959, and was a peacetime veteran of the U.S. Army.
Mr. Varilla began his career as a reporter for United Press International at its Frankfort, Ky., bureau. In 1963, he joined Xerox as editor of its corporate publication for employees. After rising through various management positions, he was named director of corporate communications in 1977 and was director of communications support at the time of his death.
He and his family came to Ridgefield in 1969 from Rochester, N.Y., living on Bruschi Lane for six years before moving to Ascot Way. He taught Christian education at Sacred Heart Church in Georgetown in the 1970s and was a member of St. Mary’s Church.
Mr. Varilla had also been interested in the schools in town and periodically wrote letters on issues involving education. In one 1971 letter, criticizing efforts to remove certain books from the schools, he wrote: “Maybe, instead of banning books, we should read a few. And maybe, instead of damning teachers, we should understand a few. Like they try to understand the kids.”
Mr. Varilla enjoyed traveling and being with his family.
Besides his wife of 42 years, he is survived by three daughters: Tracy Varilla of Greenwich, Mary Jones and her husband Stephen of New York, N.Y., and Jennifer Varilla of Old Tappan, N.J.; a brother, Frank E. Varilla of Willow Grove, Pa.; his mother-in-law, Mary Mucha of Hazleton, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.
A sister, Virginia Varilla Daniele, died before him.
The Rev. Paul Murphy, parochial vicar, celebrated a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, Dec. 11, in St. Mary’s Church. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Drums, Pa.
Contributions in his memory may be made to the Western Connecticut Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 1 Selleck Street, Norwalk, CT. 06855.

Yolanda Anderson, longtime resident

Yolanda A. Anderson, a former Western Union operator and longtime Ridgefielder, died at The Kent Specialty Care Home Saturday, Nov. 30, in Kent, Conn. She was 77 years old and the wife of Rodney Anderson.
Mrs. Anderson was born in Beaver Falls, Pa., Aug. 5, 1925, the daughter of Battista and Angelina Gusseti Annoni. Her family moved to Bethel where she was educated, graduating from high school in 1944.
In her early years she worked as an operator for Western Union.
She married Rodney A. Anderson in Bethel on Jan. 24, 1948. They lived in Ridgefield and summered in Rochester, Vt.
Mrs. Anderson was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ridgefield.
She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and visiting Vermont.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Anderson is survived by a son: James B. Anderson of Ridgefield; two daughters: Cynthia Serra of Sebastian, Fla., and Sandra Anderson Howell of Danbury; and four grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Rochester, Vt.
Donations may be made to the Valley Rescue Squad, Rochester, VT 05767 or the Southern Connecticut Alzheimer’s Association, 607 Main Street, Norwalk, CT 06951-1058.
