Dr. Richard J. Fleming, 71, radiologist

Dr. Richard Joseph Fleming, a retired physician and former chief of radiology at Stamford Radiologists Associates, died Thursday, Feb. 6, at his home in Ridgefield. He was 71 years old and the husband of JoAnna Benedetti Fleming of Ridgefield.
Dr. Fleming was born on March 31, 1931, in Waltham, Mass., the son of the late Harold and Irene Fleming, and grew up in Waltham and Newton. He was a graduate of Boston College and Tufts University School of Medicine.
During the Korean War, he served as a captain in the U.S. Army and chief of radiology at a military hospital in Puerto Rico.
Dr. Fleming then became an associate professor of radiology at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City and full professor of radiology at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, also in New York City.
Later, he helped establish Stamford Radiologists Associates in Stamford Hospital, where he served as chief of radiology for more than 25 years and where he was well known for his diagnostic skills.
He was a past member of the Fairfield County Medical Society, and was a member of the Wee Burn Country Club of Darien and the Terravita Golf and Country Club of Scotsdale, Arizona, where he and his wife enjoyed spending their vacations.
The Flemings had lived in Wilton for 15 years before moving to Ridgefield a year ago.
Besides his wife, Dr. Fleming is survived by a son, Douglas J. Fleming, and a daughter, Pamela Horan, both of San Francisco; and two stepdaughters, Jessica Hoffman of Vienna, Va., and Gillian Hoffman of Danvers, Mass.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Wilton. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery in Wilton.

John J. Giroux, owned Les Alpes

John J. Giroux of Sandy Hook, who owned Les Alpes bakery here, died of cancer Tuesday, May 6, at his home. He was 62 years old and the husband of Patricia A. (Bennett) Giroux.
A native of Clifton Park, N.Y., Mr. Giroux was born on Nov. 9, 1940 a son of the late Jeremie E. and Mary Wilson Giroux. He grew up in West Crescent, N.Y., and attended Shenendehoa Central Schools in Elmira. He served in the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne Division from 1958 to 1962 and was a graduate of Albany Business College with degrees in business administration and accounting.
Early in his career, Mr. Giroux was chief accountant for Capital Cities Communications, WTEN-TV and WROW AM/FM, in Albany. In 1970, he moved to Trumbull and became the business manager for Connecticut Broadcasting Company Inc.’s WICC AM radio. Two years later, he was promoted to comptroller and director of the station.
After his retirement from broadcasting in 1985, Mr. Giroux purchased Les Alpes Bakery in Ridgefield, in what is now the CVS shopping center. He was the baker for seven years before closing the business. He then worked for several Ridgefield businesses including Quality Housewashing, Ridgefield Roofing and Mulvaney Plumbing and Heating. He later joined Home Depot in Danbury as a plumbing associate.
Besides his wife of 38 years, survivors include two daughters, Tammy L. Card of Sandy Hook and Lori L. Erikson of Newtown; two brothers, a grandson and five granddaughters
Services took place Friday at the Honan Funeral Home in Newtown. Cremation was at the convenience of the family.

Marian Goodwin, 77, longtime nurse, RHS 1943

Marian “Marie” Haight Goodwin of 642 Danbury Road, a lifelong Ridgefielder and longtime nurse, died on Friday morning, May 9, at Danbury Hospital. She was 77 years old.
Mrs. Goodwin was born in Danbury, Dec. 29, 1925, a daughter of the late John F. Sr. and Gertrude Kehoe Haight of Ridgefield.
As a child, she lived on North Salem Road, but the family moved to Washington Street when she was five, and she lived much of her life in homes on that road.
Mrs. Goodwin attended the former Titicus Schoolhouse and graduated from Ridgefield High School in 1943. She later graduated from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing, New York, N.Y.
A retired nursing supervisor, Mrs. Goodwin had been a member of the nursing staff of the former Altnacraig Convalescent Home High Ridge for 37 years before her retirement.
In 1967, she moved to Main Street and later lived at Ballard Green.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Church and enjoyed gardening.
Mrs. Goodwin is survived by two daughters, Lani Brown and her husband Richard of Ridgefield, and Anne Belanger and her husband Bob of Wilmington, N.C.; two sons, Thomas Goodwin of Danbury and James Goodwin and his wife Luz of Newtown; seven grandchildren, Wendy Boscia of Ridgefield, DJ Brown of Ridgefield, Kenneth Brown of Danbury, Andrew Brown of Danbury, Andrea Singer of Danbury, Tammy Grabner of New Milford, Eric Belanger of Vermont, and Angela Belanger of Wilmington, N.C.; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Her brother, retired Ridgefield Police Chief John F. Haight Jr., died last fall.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday in St. Mary’s Church.
Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

The Kane Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

George R. Gray, 81, worked on Hubble

George R. Gray of Williamsburg, Va., a former Ridgefielder and an aerospace engineer who worked on the Hubble telescope, died on Tuesday, April 8, of cancer. He was 81 and the husband of Rosemary Gray.
As an employee of the Perkin-Elmer Corporation of Norwalk for more than 20 years, Mr. Gray worked on the Hubble Space Telescope Project, a joint venture between NASA and the European Space Agency. Launched in 1990, the Hubble is a space-based observatory used by astronomers around the world.
Mr. Gray was also responsible for the Maintenance and Refurbishment Plan for the telescope in orbit. In this capacity, he worked on the design of handling fixtures for all orbit-replaceable parts and assemblies. He retired from Perkin-Elmer in 1990 with the title of senior staff engineer of the Space Telescope Directorate.
Before joining Perkin-Elmer, Mr. Gray worked for American Machine and Foundry of Stamford in the company’s Advanced Products Group. While there, he was involved in the design of missile and space launchers, such as the Titan.
He was a member of the team that designed the Vertical Assembly Building at Cape Canaveral, Fla., in which many rockets, including the Apollo series, were put together.
Mr. Gray also worked for Boston Gear of Quincy, Mass., and the Camloc Fastener Corporation and Western Union Telegraph Company, both of New York City.
A graduate of City College in New York, he earned both his bachelor of mechanical engineering degree and his master’s of engineering there. He had also taken advanced engineering courses at Columbia University.
Mr. Gray served three and one-half years in the U.S. Army’s infantry division, where he earned the rank of first lieutenant. During that time he spent a year in Austria as an exchange officer with the 42nd Infantry Division.
A Wilton resident for 25 years, he had lived in Ridgefield for 10 years before moving to Wilton.
Along with his wife, he was an active participant in The College of William and Mary’s Christopher Wren Society and was a member of Colonial Williamsburg’s St. George Tucker House.
An amateur architect, he designed three of his homes. He was also an avid photographer who loved New England and coastlines, maritime history, boating and travel.
Besides his wife, survivors include a daughter, Allison Gray Sanders of Wilton; a son, Jeff Gray of Milton, Mass.; a grandson, Ian, of Wilton; and his brother, Robert Grenke of Middle Island, N.Y.
A Mass of Resurrection is scheduled for Wednesday, April 23, at 11 at Our Lady of Fatima Church on Route 7 in Wilton.

Alexander J. Hamilton, infant

Alexander J. Hamilton, infant son of Brian and Roseann (Buccino) Hamilton of 39 Midrocks Road, , died on Wednesday, January 15, at Yale New-Haven Hospital, New Haven.
He was born at Stamford Hospital on Sunday, January 12, 2003.
Besides his parents, Alex is survived by his paternal grandparents, Dennis and Arlene Hamilton of Youngsville, NY, his maternal grandparents, Eugene and Rose Buccino of New Canaan, CT and by several aunts, uncles and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 11:30AM in St. Mary’s Church, Ridgefield.
Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Ridgefield.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions in Alex’s memory may be made to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Stamford Hospital or Yale-New Haven Hospital.
The Kane Funeral Home, 41 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield is in charge of arrangements.

Simone Z. Harris, 57, teacher, designer

Simone Zapun Harris of Danbury Road, a teacher and computer expert, died on Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at her home, the victim of murder. She was 57 years old. Police have charged her former husband with her death.
Ms. Harris was born and grew up in New York City where her parents, Gerhart and Shari (nee Mayer) Zapun owned and ran a lamp manufacturing company, Zapun Ceramics.
She earned her master’s degree in education and was a lifelong student with an enquiring mind, and many talents and interests including creative writing, photography, graphic design and computer languages.
“Her rich and varied work history reflected her interests and included working as a photographer, teaching academic skills to children and adults, computer systems design at IBM, and teaching advanced computer skills at local colleges,” her family said. “Simone was close to her Jewish roots, studying Jewish law and history, and received her Bat Mitzvah as an adult.”
Ms. Harris had lived in Ridgefield for 10 years with her son Jonathan (Jon) and daughter Gabrielle (Gaby). She is also survived by her brother Paul Zapun, her aunt Bella in New York City, and many cousins around the country.
“Simone is remembered as a person with enormous creativity, insight, humor, and energy,” her family said. “She was a committed mother, friend, and educator who had an important impact on many people's lives.”
Private funeral services will take place in New York City on Monday, April 21.

Daniel J. Healy, 76, IT&T executive

Daniel Joseph Healy of Avon, a retired executive who had formerly lived on Marshall Road, died Tuesday, April 22, of cancer. He was 76 years old and the husband of Anne Marie Lawler Healy.
A native of Manhattan, Mr. Healy was born on Oct. 29, 1926. He grew up in the Bronx and graduated from Cooper Union in Manhattan, where he was honored for being the “number one” graduate as a professional engineer in his class.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Healy had a long career as a management professional in telecommunications, working for such companies as Norelco and IT&T. He and his family had lived in many parts of the country, as well as in Paris and Brazil.
The Healys moved to Ridgefield in 1973 and remained until 1985. “They lived in Ridgefield the longest they lived anywhere,” said their daughter, Kathleen Anderson of Kensington.
While here, Mr. Healy was active in St. Mary’s Parish.
“Dan especially loved spending time with his family and entertaining his grandchildren,” his family said. “He enjoyed telling jokes, had a great sense of humor and an engaging, easy-going likable personality which made a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of meeting him.”
Besides his wife, Mr. Healy is survived by five children and their spouses, Maura and Bill Kernan of West Granby, Kathleen M. and Mark Anderson of Kensington, Eileen and Dean Setzler of Canton, Thomas F. and Teresa Healy of Redding and Danielle J. and Scott Wilson of Madison; 13 grandchildren, Eileen and Kelly Kernan, Christine, Kathryn and Kevin Anderson, Matthew and Michael Seltzer, Brian, Tommy and Christopher Daniel Wilson, Ryan, Jack and Will Healy; and a nephew. A brother, Dennis, died before him.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday in St. Ann Church, Avon. Burial was in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, N.Y.
The Ahern Funeral Home in Unionville was in charge of arrangements.

Horst Hetzel, 63, retired mechanic

Horst Hetzel of Ocean Forest Villas, S.C., a native of Germany who had lived in Ridgefield nearly 30 years, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in South Carolina. He was 63 years old and the husband of Irene Paterson Hetzel.
Born in Frankfurt, Germany, Mr. Hetzel was a son of the late Heinrich and Elisabeth Saenger Hetzel. He had lived several years in South America before coming to the United States as a boy.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
A Volkswagen mechanic for many years at Pray Volkswagen in Greenwich, Mr. Hetzel and his wife moved to Regan Road in 1974. Last June, they moved to Myrtle Beach.
While in Ridgefield he was a member of the German Club and had been an avid soccer player in Stamford and Ridgefield.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sisters, Maria Claus and her husband, Gerhard of Naples, Fla., and Gisela Trimarchi of Weston.
The Rev. Kirk Lawton led a graveside service Saturday, Jan. 11, at Ocean Woods Memorial Cemetery, Myrtle Beach.
The McMillan-Small Funeral Home, Myrtle Beach, was in charge of arrangments.
