Robert D. MacGillis, 66, of Groton died suddenly at home on Monday afternoon after a long struggle with Bi-polar disorder.
He was born in Bayonne, New Jersey on June 30, 1036, the son of Angus and Catherine MacGillis, loving husband of Marie E. Sharkey for 42 years.
Mr. MacGillis was a devoted father to four daughters, Linda Rubin of Westmoreland, N.H., Mary MacGillis of Groton, Ct., Dawn Vowels of Simpsonville, Ky. And Doreen MacGillis of York, Me., two sons Robert M. MacGillis of Portland, Ct. and Eugene MacGillis of Ellington, Ct., two sisters Judy Coad of Florida, Sister Miriam MacGillis of New Jersey, and a brother A. Roy MacGillis of Florida, and a loving grandfather to six grandchildren.
Upon completion of high school and a two year tour of duty with the U. S. Army, Mr. MacGillis attended the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts. After completing his studies, he began a career as an industrial illustrator for Electric Boat in Groton where he worked for 15 years while also watercolor painting on a part-time basis. In 1976, he began painting as a full-time artist. His work has been shown in many major national exhibits, and has been acquired by hundreds of private collectors, corporations, and museums. He was the recipient of over 80 national and regional art awards, and was listed in Who’s Who in American Art, Who’s Who in the East and People of Achievement in North America.
He was also a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Groton, a 40 member and Past Grand Knight of the Father Murphy Council of the Knights of Columbus, member emeritus of the Salmagundi Club, and a board member to the S. E. Conn. Mental Health Council.
Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 Sat. Aug. 31, at the Sacred Heart Church, Sacred Heart Dr., Groton, Ct. Burial will be private.
The family will be receiving friends and relatives from 4 to 8 p.m. Fri. Aug. 30 at his residence.
Byles- Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. is in charge of arrangements.

Orlando D'Ascenzo

Orlando D’Ascenzo, 83, of 63 Cross Rd., Waterford died Fri. Aug 23 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in New London, Ct.
He was born on May 10, 1919 in New Canaan, Ct., the son of Antonio & Arbeletta Cordorio D’Ascenzo.
Mr. D’Ascenzo was married
to the late Helena Seale on March 4, 1948 in New Canaan.
He had received his high school degree from Waterford High School in 2000 on the Veterans back to school program.
He had served in the U. S. Navy from 1937 to 1958 and was a veteran of both W.W. II & Korean Wars, retiring from the service with the rank of CPO E-7.
A salvage diver during the war, Mr. D’Ascenzo had earned the Bronze Star for helping to clear Port de Bouc in southern France in August of 1944, as the invasion of Europe was underway. It was his job to remove a wrecked tugboat and allow ships waiting outside the harbor to take on fuel, but he quickly realized the waters were filled with mines and mine cables and had to cut them loose without becomes tangled by them so that the ships in waiting could pass safely into the harbor.
He had worked for 23 years in the Shipyard Test Operation Dept as a tester at Electric Boat in Groton.
Mr. D’Ascenzo was a member of the Second Congregational Church, Fleet Reserve, Union Lodge of Masons all in New London, VFW Post in Preston, the Machinist Union, and was a plank member of the U. S. Naval Memorial Foundation in Washington, D. C.
He is survived by 2 sons William D. & Randy D. D’Ascenzo both of Waterford, 2 brothers Michael & Pat D’Ascenzo both of Norwalk, 2 sisters Carmela Palumberi of Noroton, Ct., Josephine D’Ascenzo of Norwalk, 5 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 3 gr- gr- grandchildren.
He was also predeceased by a daughter Shirley Ann Winklebleck.
Funeral service will be held at 11 o’clock Tues. Aug. 27 at the Second Congregational Church, New London. Burial with military honors will be held in the Jordan Cemetery, Waterford.
Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London.

Orlando, Fla - Marcia A. Leard, 92, of 14939 Firestone St., Orlando, Florida died peacefully at home on Saturday 17th. 2002.
Mrs. Leard was born February 3, 1910 in Middletown, Connecticut, daughter of Ernest and Huldah Webber.
In 1928 she and her husband, Stewart moved to Groton , Ct. In 1944 they moved to Gales Ferry, Ct. and later made their home in Niantic, Ct. Mr. Leard died January 15, 1995.
She was a member long time members of the Groton Heights Baptist Church .
Mrs. Leard retired in 1992 after 20 years of service from the U.S.Postal Service as Assistant Postmaster in Gales Ferry, CT. At the time she held the distinction of being the only female Asst. Postmaster in the US Postal Service.
A loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend she is survived by her son, Thomas Leard of Orlando, Fl., her daughter Shirley Leard also of Orlando, Fl.with whom she had made her home, three grandsons and five great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM Friday at Groton Heights Baptist Church. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic. Irene W. Macnair, 86, of 382 Poquonnock Rd. in Groton died Sat. Aug. 17 at the Mariner Healthcare at Bridebrook in Niantic.
She was born on Oct. 7, 1915 in New London, Ct. the daughter of Stanislaus & Antoinia Wiercinski.
Mrs. Macnair was married
to the late Frederick Everett Macnair on Jan. 21, 1935 in New London. He died Dec. 29, 1999.
For many years she had worked at the former Max Pollack Thread Mill in Groton.
Survivors include a daughter Catherine Orfall of Hood River, Or., 1 sister Claire Pietrzak of Uncasville, 2 grandchildren Kevin Orfall & Blair Orfall, 1 niece Dorothy Pietrzak, 2 nephews John & Paul Pietrzak.
Mrs. Macnair was also predeceased by a sister Catherine Crunk.
Graveside service will held at 12 noon Tues. Aug. 20, at the Colonel Ledyard Cemetery in Groton. There are to be no visiting hours.

Eugene Palladino

Eugene “Gene” Palladino, of 4 Merry Lane in Gales Ferry, died Monday, May 11, 2004 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on July 8, 1931 in New London, the son of Nicholas and Mary DeCapio Palladino.
Gene was married
to the former Joan E. Moran on June 19, 1954 in Groton.
He had attended the former Bulkeley High School, leaving at age 17 to enlist in the Navy. A veteran of the Korean War, Gene spent more than 20 years in the U. S. Submarine Service; and was a member of the Norwich Branch of the American Legion as well as the Sub Vets Club in Groton.
He then went to work at the Electric Boat Company in Groton before opening his own business, Ledyard Electronics. From 1981 until his retirement in 1994, Gene had worked at the Millstone Power Station in Waterford.
An avid gardener, his passions were his family and working in his yard.
Besides his wife, he is survived two daughters Lynne Palladino of Norwich, Jean Marie Watson of Holden, MA., a son John E. Palladino of Gales Ferry, two brothers George and Nicholas Palladino, both of Waterford, one sister Rachel Riddle of Groton, seven grandchildren Brian & Andy Carey, Ashley, Wendell & Eugene Watson, Jessica & John Palladino.
He was also predeceased by a sister Antoinette Saunders and three brothers Michael, Robert and Frank Palladino.
Graveside service with military honors will be held at 10 am Fri., May 14 at the Avery- Stoddard Cemetery, Rt. 214, in Ledyard.
Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London.
