RUTH MARIE (HARRIS) WADE of 260 Montauk Ave., New London died Tuesday, May 11, 2004.
She was born on May 5, 1905 in New London, Connecticut to Frederick Henry Harris and Grace Ellen (Bump) Harris. Mrs. Wade lived in Waterford during her childhood years and later her parents built a home in New London. She attended the local schools followed by working for the firm of Sinclair Lewis in downtown New London. She worked in sales, ordered merchandise and was the decorator of the window displays.
Mrs. Wade married
Richard Elton Wade, Sr. on June 15, 1928 in New London. He passed away October 1, 1973.
A piano player, she was a member of her husband’s group, “the Merry Makers” for several years.
In the late 1920’s Mr. and Mrs. Wade sold fireworks at 110 Bank St. and after New London prohibited the sale and use of fireworks, they had two portable stands in Waterford in which they sold a large assortment of fireworks for the July 4th holiday, until illegal to do so in Connecticut.
With her husband, Richard Wade Sr., they were in various businesses. In the late 1930’s they operated a gas station in Waterford on Willets Ave. Her husband, who was an auctioneer, also dealt in used furniture and antiques. For many years Mrs. Wade operated a neighborhood grocery store on Maple Avenue and owned four rental properties.
Mrs. Wade was a member of the Montauk Ave. Baptist Church and Fidelity Chapter No. 54 Order of Eastern Star which now meets in Niantic. Mrs. Wade’s grandmother Mary Harris was a charter member of Fidelity Chapter.
A sister, Gertrude Douchette predeceased her as did a son, Richard E. Wade, Jr. and a grandson, Troy E. Evrett.
She is survived by a son, Kenneth F. Wade and wife Loretta, grandchildren Curtis and Chriss Wade, and Mrs. Lori Michalak. Son Robert H. Wade, Sr. and wife Geraldine; grandchildren Robert H. Wade, Jr and Mrs. Audra Moore. Daughter Mrs. Helen Huntley; grandchildren Frederick Huntley and Mrs. Debra Jenkins. Daughter Mrs. Bette Evrett and husband Gather (Tom) Evrett; grandchildren Brian and Gary Evrett. Daughter in law Mrs. Iris Wade, her son Walter Sebastian and daughter Evelyn Wade Maloney. Also seventeen great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday morning at 10 o’clock at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St. New London. Interment will be in Jordan Cemetery, Waterford. Visiting hours will be on Friday from 7 until 9 o’clock. Fidelity Chapter, Order of Eastern Star will hold a memorial service at 7:30. Evelyn A. Stevens, 77, of 5 Woodland Dr. in Waterford died on Thurs. May 6, 2004 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in New London.
She was born on Mar. 12, 1927 in Skowhegan, ME. the daughter of Frank and Eva Poulin White.
Mrs. Stevens is survived by two daughters Sandra Lewis of Waterford, Debra Keyes of North Conway, NH, two sisters Rita Dennis of Skowhegan, Lillian Stewart of Madison, ME., three grandchildren Christopher Lewis, Jennifer Merz and Edie Keyes.
She was also predeceased by a sister Juliette Smedberg.

Olive Jacobs Hersant

Waterford, CT - Olive Jacobs Hersant, a long time resident of Waterford, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2004 less than a month after her 89th birthday.
She is survived by her three sons, David Hersant of New London, Douglas Hersant of Mystic and Darryl Hersant of Berlin, Germany, her three daughters-in-law, Adele, Agnes and Barbara, six grandchildren, Léa, Olivia, Park, Katy, Heidi and Sarah, 12 great-grandchildren, and a niece Mrs. Eileen Jacobs Kopec of Mansfield, Connecticut. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years,
Joseph G. Hersant, a sister Grace Jacobs Butler and a brother Harold Jacobs.
Olive Hersant was born in Willimantic, Connecticut on April 11, 1915, the youngest of three children to Edgar and May Jacobs of that city and attended the Windham public schools graduating from Windham High School in 1931.
After attending Business College in Hartford she served as the secretary to the director of the Windham Community Hospital in Willimantic for several years.
She married
Joseph G. Hersant on March 28, 1937 in Willimantic where they raised their three sons. In 1950 she and her family followed her husband to Europe where he was stationed with the US Forces in Germany and she served as the executive secretary to the Chief of Staff of the Berlin Command. After returning to the United States she and her husband settled at Millstone Point, Waterford. From 1960 until her retirement in 1983 she worked at Connecticut College, retiring as Administrative Assistant of Graduate Studies. She was a member of the Crossroads Presbyterian Church of 70 Cross Road, Waterford.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of Crossroads Place in Waterford for their professionalism and compassion during this time of transition.
There will be no funeral or visiting hours. Burial will be private.

Donald W. Beatrice, 80, formerly of 15 Swanty Johnson Road, Uncasville, passed away Tuesday morning, May 4, 2004 at Fairview Nursing Home in Groton.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Blanche West Beatrice. He leaves one brother, Alvin, of Norwich. He is also survived by four children and their spouses: Roger of Uncasville, Sherri Daniels and her husband Steve, of Birmingham, AL, Pam of Westerly, and Donald and his wife Sadie of Uncasville. He also leaves 6 grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, Frederic and Merton..
Donald retired in 1992 from Electric Boat in Groton after 50 years of service and was a member of the IBEW union.
Formerly of Groton, Donald spent his retirement years living and working on his son’s horse farm in Uncasville.
Calling hours will be on Thursday from noon until 2 o’clock at the Byles Groton Memorial Home , 310 Thames Street in Groton. A service will immediately follow at 2 0’clock. Burial will be private.

Clayton S. Shafer, 79, of 5 Snowden St. in Waterford died Sunday May 2, 2004 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in New London.
He was born on May 14, 1924 in Uncasville, the son of Theodore and Florence Holmes Shafer.
Mr. Shafer was married
to the former Marjorie Roberts on July 18, 1946 in Charleston, South Carolina.
He had served with the Merchant Marines during World War II.
Mr. Shafer had first worked at the Electric Boat Company in Groton as a machinist and then worked for 22 years for the State of Conn. Health Dept. retiring in 1986.
Mr. Shafer was a life member and past president of the Thames Valley Rock Hounds and a member and deacon at the First Baptist Church of New London.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son Laurance Shafer of Waterford and a brother Stanley C. Shafer of Ohio.
He was also predeceased by two sisters Doris Bumstead , Carol Shafer, and a brother Russell H. Shafer.
Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wed., May 5 at the Union Cemetery in Waterford. There are no visiting hours.

ESTHER COOPER age 72 of 12 Donna Dr., Groton died Friday morning at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital
She was born in Camden, NJ, June 28, 1930 the daughter of Charles and Ethel Handy.
Mrs. Cooper is survived by her loving family including her husband Ernest Cooper and her children, Gregory, Anthony, Jonathan, Gary, Eric, Ronnie, Yvonne and Nickki, 12 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. She was predeceased by a son, Jay.
A funeral service will be held Saturday morning at 11 o’clock at the Pleasant Valley Community of Prayer and Praise, Grove Ave., Groton. Interment will be in Colonel Ledyard Cemetery. A visiting hour will be held at the church from 10 until the time of the service. Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. is in charge of arrangements.
