Morris Calmon, 95, of 89 Viets St. Ext. in New London formerly of Jefferson Ave. died Tues., May 3, 2005 at the Camelot Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in New London.
Mr. Calmon was born in Poland on Nov. 1, 1909 the son of Philip and Ann Kalmanowitz and had married
the former Lillian Nasser on Mar. 11, 1951 in New London.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Mr. Calmon was a 1930 graduate of the former Bulkeley High School in New London. For many years he was the owner and operator of Calmon Jewelers on State St. in New London. He sold the store in the late 1970’s to George Kientzy and continued to work there a couple of days a week until he turned 90.
He was a member of the Congregation Beth-El in New London, the Jewish War Veterans and the New London Lodge of Elks.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters and their husband’s Nadine R. & Mark Lipman of Waterford, Karen L. & Joseph Lukeman of Boston, MA., three grandchildren Philip and Matthew Lipman both of Waterford, Daniel Lipman of Manchester, CT., several cousins, nieces and nephews.
He had been predeceased by two brothers Abraham Kalman, Dr. Calvin Calmon.
Funeral service will be held at 11 am this (Thurs) morning at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London.
Burial will follow in Beth- El Cemetery in Groton.
Memorial week will be observed at the home of his daughter Nadine Lipman, 22 Pond Edge Dr., Waterford.
Donations may be directed to the Charity of the Donors Choice.
Ralph A. Kennedy

Groton – Ralph A. Kennedy, 80, of Laurelwood Rd, Groton, died peacefully Saturday, April 30, 2005, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Fall River, MA, April 15, 1925, he was the son of the late Albert and Mary (Contant) Kennedy.
Ralph and Margaret D. Kennedy were married
on February 28, 1946 in Fall River, MA and spent 59 memorable years together.
He is survived by his wife and children; Barbara (Don) Critoph, Ralph Jr., Stephen (Susan), Brian (Tina), Michael (Dawne), Paul, Lisa and
21 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren and his sister, Marion Klek, of Florida, all of whom had a special place in his heart.
Mr. Kennedy’s love of life was expressed by the tranquil but yet vibrant property and home he shared with his family. He was an avid backpacker and traveler of the U.S.A.
Over the course of his lifetime, Mr. Kennedy enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and served on the sub-chaser, PC1136 during WWII. He later served on the USS Bergall (SS320), USS Triton (SSN586), which was the first submarine to circumnavigate the world submerged, and the USS Alexander Hamilton (SSBN617), and retired in 1965. After his Navy career, Mr. Kennedy worked at Electric Boat as a Chief Nuclear Test Engineer and Qualified Shift Test Engineer working in the Nuclear Test Dept. He retired from Electric Boat in August, 1987 and then was bestowed the honor of being the Triggerman for the launching of the fast attack submarine, USS Pasadena (SSN752) in Sept. 1987. He will be sadly and respectfully missed by all the Little Eagles He Taught to Fly!
There will be no visiting hours and a Memorial Service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ralph’s memory may be

Mary T. Ganacoplos

MARY T. GANACOPLOS age 81 of 109 Broad St. Groton beloved wife of William ‘Buster’ Ganacoplos passed away Saturday morning at Fairview in Groton.
She was born in Norwich on May 2, 1924 the daughter of Michael and Pauline Tsesmelis.
Mary and Buster were married
on May 9, 1948 in New London.
Mary was a graduate of WMI in New London as well as the New London Business College.
She was a renowned cook and was ran a successful catering business. Mary was a member of St. Sophia Hellenic Orthodox Church in New London and the Daughters of Penelope at the church.
Besides her husband she is survived by two sons, Nicholas and his wife Patricia Ganacoplos of East Lyme and Michael and his wife Yvonne Ganacoplos of Williamsburg, VA and a daughter, Pamela Ganacoplos of Milford, CT., two sisters, Vicki Mitchell of Waterford, and Barbara ‘Bunny’ Dart of Ocala, FL. Mary also is survived by five grandchildren, Christopher and Nicholas Ganacoplos, Kate Lewis, Jane and Stephanie Ganacoplos.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock at St. Sophia Hellenic Orthodox Church, 200 Hempstead St. New London. Interment will be in Colonel Ledyard Cemetery, Groton. Visiting hours will be on Monday evening from 6 until 8 o’clock at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be directed to St. Sophia Church or the charity of the donors choice.
Peter J. George

Peter George, 63, of Williams St. in New London, CT., died Friday, May 13, 2005 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in New London surrounded by his loving family.
Peter was born in Norwich, CT., on Sept. 8, 1941 to the proud parents of John and Annastasia George. He attended local schools in Norwich, then met his loving wife Mary Louise “Weezie” George and moved to Noank, CT., where they raised four children.
In his early years, Peter worked at Electric Boat until 1963, when he opened Fort Hill Shoe Repair in Groton, where he was a cobbler for 17 years. In 1980, Peter ventured into the restaurant business where he owned and operated The Lorelei restaurants in both Groton and New London until 1999.
Until his passing, he worked with his nephew at the John C. George Construction Company. He was an Associate member of the United States Submarine Veterans Club in Groton. Peter was an avid pool player and a member of the Connecticut Pool Players Assoc. He was also a life long Red Sox fan.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary Louise “Weezie” (Clements) George, his son John P. George, and his wife Wendie George & their son John P. George Jr. of Woonsocket, RI., three daughters Carol Norosky, her husband Frank of Groton & their children Anna, Peter and Frank, Denise George and her dear friend Robert Whitney of Oakdale, CT., Judy Meucci, her husband Gary of Colchester & their two daughters Heather and Chloe.
He is also survived by a sister Georgiana George and a brother Cleon George.
His parents and two brothers Sperros and Michael George predeceased him.
Funeral service will be held at 11 am Tues. May 17 at the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Norwich.
Burial will follow in the Maplewood Cemetery in Norwich.
Visiting hours will be held this (MON) evening from 6 to 8 pm at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St. New London.

Kevin Christopher Leonard

KEVIN CHRISTOPHER LEONARD age 26 of 155 B Tomaquag Road, Ashaway, RI died unexpectedly early Saturday morning, August 13, 2005 at his residence.
He was a 1996 graduate of Stonington High School and was currently employed at Sheffield Labratories in New London. He will be remembered for his passion for playing music and his aspirations to write and play his own original compositions. He was a talented and creative artist. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his mother, Patricia Travisano Leonard of Niantic, CT and his father and stepmother, Robert J. and Ann L. Leonard and a stepbrother, Gregory R. Leonard all of Ashaway. He is also survived by his maternal grandparents, Benjamin and Betty Travisano of Uncasville, CT. He leaves behind numerous aunts, uncles and cousins as well as his fiancée, Theresa Grills of Westerly, RI.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 Thursday morning at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St. New London. Interment will be private. There are no visiting hours. Kenneth L. Perkins

Kenneth L. Perkins, age 87, formerly of 58 Country Club Road, in Groton passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 18, 2005, in the presence of family at Fairview Nursing Home in Groton. Ken was born in Groton on March 22, 1918 the second son of Allyn I and Margaret Strickland Perkins. He was married
to Ruth Williams Perkins of New London on March 1, 1947, she died February 9, 1998. He was a faithful husband and loving father and provider. His loyalty and sense of humor was a model to all of us. Ken served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre during World War II as a radioman on board a minesweeper. He witnessed the Battle of Okinawa. Following his honorable discharge, he worked at the Groton Sub Base in Civil Service as a marine pipefitter. He was a remarkable Fast Pitch Softball player there and later with Charles Pfizer, Inc., in the Groton Softball League. Ken was a perennial All-Star and led the league twice in batting, once with a .409 average in 1952. Ken was a Charter member of the Groton Lodge of Elks, a more than 50 years member of Charity and Relief Lodge of Masons as well as a member of both the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He retired from Pfizer in 1980 as an Engineering Foreman after thirty years of service. Ken is survived by his three sons, Kenneth B. Perkins and his wife Judy of Newington, CT, Larry M. Perkins of Oswego, NY and William A. Perkins of Groton, granddaughters, Natalie, Tara, Holly, Jessica and Jillian Perkins, grandson, Kenneth J. Perkins and one greatgrandson, Xander Grey Townsend. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Perkins and a niece Paula Vowles. Ken missed his wife deeply and we, as his family will deeply miss him. A funeral service will be held on Monday morning at 11 o'clock at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames Street. Interment with Military Honors will be in Colonel Ledyard Cemetery. Nicholas P. Doukas

Nicholas P. Doukas, 80, of 12 Gallup Lane in Waterford died Sun, Aug. 21, 2005 at the Beechwood Manor in New London.
He was born on Dec. 27, 1924 in New London the son of Peter N. and Regina Doukas.
Mr. Doukas was married
to Ruth Green Kelmar on Oct. 17, 1987 in Groton.
Having grown up in Waterford, Nick was a graduate of the former Chapman Technical School in New London where he was a star football player.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific aboard the aircraft carrier USS San Jacinto, along with former President George P. Bush who was a young pilot at the time.
For many years, he was a Master Mechanic owning and operating Nick’s Service Station on the Post Road in Waterford. He designed and built the station which opened in 1964 and ran it himself until 1982. He had recalled, “There wasn’t anything on wheels that we couldn’t handle”.
With his wife Ruth he had also owned and operated Nick’s Post Road Package Store in Waterford for eight years.
Nick’s many interests included gardening, fishing, tending to birds and his three cows. He had also held his private pilot’s license. One of his many achievements was having flown solo across the United States.
He was a very creative gourmet cook, applying many techniques he had learned from his father who was a “master chef”. His father had owned and operated the former Crescent Diner in Waterford.
His pride and joy was his 1926 Model T “Elizabeth” which he had completely restored, having found her in a barn in Kansas. He had also been responsible for the engine rebuild on the Jordan Village Fire Company’s antique fire truck.
He was a member of AHEPA, the New London Elks Club, the V.F.W. of Waterford, the St. Sophia Hellenic Church and the AOPA.
Besides his wife, he is survived by 3 sons, Stephen of Waterford, J. Kevin of CA, F. Joseph of Groton, 6 daughters and 3 son-in-laws Theresa Doukas of Uncasville, Sheila & Tom Williams of Claremont, FL., Ellen & Matt Hasselman of Montville, Catherine Crowell of Atlanta, GA., Suzanne & Mark Niermeyer of Mystic and Nicolette Doukas of Waterford., his devoted sister Dolores Green of Old Lyme and his sister Mary Stearns of Groton, a brother Peter N. Doukas, Jr. of CT., a step-daughter and her husband Merrill & Michael Mazzella of Niantic, a step-son Paul Kelmar of Waterford, a former daughter in law Terry Doukas of East Lyme, 13 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Nick had also been predeceased by a daughter Harriet Hagelan, a brother Donald Doukas and a grandson Heath Caputo.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wed., Aug. 24 at the St. Sophia Hellenic Orthodox Church in New London.
Burial will follow in the Cedar Grove Cemetery, New London.
Visiting hours will be held this (TUES) evening from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London.
There will be an additional calling hour on Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may go to the St. Sophia Hellenic Orthodox, Church, 200 Hempstead St., New London.
