Allan H. Huhtala, 59, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in New London with his family at his side.
He was born on Dec. 11, 1945 in Putnam, CT. to the late Hannes and Sarah “Sadie” Huhtala.
Allan had married
the former Charlene Chapman on Jan. 29, 1972 in Norwich.
He graduated from NFA in 1965. Upon graduation, he served in the Navy from 1965 to 1969 and had been stationed aboard the USS Albacore in Portsmouth, NH.
Allan retired from the Dow Chemical in Gales Ferry after 25 years and most recently worked for Vision Appraisal Technology during the reevaluations throughout CT. & RI.
He was an assistant coach and involved with the beginning of the Ledyard Girls Softball League. He was a member of the Ledyard High School Improvement Foundation and had served on the building committee for the Ledyard Town Garage and Board of Education. He was elected to the Ledyard Zoning Board of Appeals in 1986 and served most recently as the Vice-Chairman.
Allan enjoyed boating, golfing and reading about history.
His other survivors include two daughters Laura Huhtala Majeski of Topsfield, MA., his son-in-law Stephen and grandchildren Kaitlyn, Sean and Sarah Majeski, daughter Allana Huhtala and her companion John Christian of Arizona, a sister Janet Huhtala of Salem, a brother John Huhtala of Westerly, R.I., sister-in-law Doris Johnson and her husband Ted of Old Lyme as well as nieces, nephews and many special friends.
Funeral service will be held at 11am Thursday at the Byles- Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St.
Burial will follow in the Gales Ferry Cemetery.
Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 7 pm Wednesday at the funeral home.

Frank H. Chappell, Jr.
Essex , CT - Frank H. Chappell, Jr. died on September 4, 2005 at home at 152 Essex Meadows, Essex, Connecticut after a brief bout with cancer.
He was born in New London on July 31, 1920 the son of Jean Ellwood Chappell and Frank H. Chappell.
Mr. Chappell grew up in New London before serving in the Coast Guard and the US Army in the Pacific during World War II. In 1946 he married
Marcia Parks Hinrichs and they moved to his family’s ranch, Renderbrook Spade, in Colorado City, Texas. The Chappells then moved to Lubbock, Texas in 1947 where Frank helped manage the family ranching business and they raised their family. In 1971 they moved to Waterford, Connecticut, and then to Essex in 2000.
Frank was a member of the Ariston Club, the Thames Club, the Hammonassett Fishing Association, the Anglers Club in New York, the Fly Fishers Club in London, Mystic Seaport, Ellwood House Museum in DeKalb, Illinois, the Texas and Southwestern Cattleraisers Association, the Texas Cattle Feeders Association, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, and was a founder of the National Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock, Texas.
He was a quiet and unassuming man of a hugely generous nature who exerted a lasting influence on everyone who came into contact with him. He was a fly fisherman, a cattleman, a sailor and a conservation outdoorsman who shared his warm sense of humor while he was actively involved in community and church activities wherever he lived.
He is survived by his wife of 59 ½ years, Marcia, daughter; Jean C. Way and her husband, J. Edson Way III of Austin, TX, sons; Robert H. Chappell and his wife Rose of Taos, NM, and Frank H. Chappell IV of Fairfax, CA, five grandchildren; Amanda and Jesse Chappell, Sarah Way Quiroga, Rebecca, and Jacob Way, three great-grandchildren; Caroline, Victoria and Emily Quiroga, his sister Marion C. Bassham of Colorodo City, TX, a niece and two nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00PM, Wednesday, September 14, 2005 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Essex, CT. A reception will follow at Essex Meadows. Private burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, New London, in the Chappell family lot. The Chappell family requests that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Employees Appreciation Fund, Essex Meadows, 30 Bokum Road, Essex, CT 06426. Bruce L. Bullough

Captain Bruce L. Bullough, USN (Ret.), died Monday, April 28, 2003 at home following a courageous three-year battle with cancer. He was born in Salt Lake City, UT on Dec. 27, 1948, the son of Vaughn and Jewel Stapp Bullough of Florence, Alabama. He graduated from Coffee High School in Florence, in 1967 and attended Auburn University on an NROTC scholarship. In 1968 he received a presidential appointment to the United States Naval Academy, graduating as a member of the class of 1972 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Bruce’s distinguished twenty-nine year naval career was dedicated to the submarine force. Following six months duty on board diesel submarines at Key West, Florida, he attended Nuclear Power Training at Vallejo, California, and Idaho Falls, Idaho, then Submarine School at New London, CT.
Bruce served two years on board USS Sunfish (SSN 649), attended Submarine Officer Advanced Course and served two years on board USS George C Marshall (SSBN 654)(Blue). He served as an instructor at the S1W Prototype in Idaho Falls, Idaho, from December 1978 until April 1981then served as Engineering Officer on board USS Daniel Webster (SSBN 626) (Blue) until May 1984. Bruce served as Executive Officer on board USS Tullibee (SSN 597) from July 1984 until October 1986 and Executive Officer on board USS Lafayette (SSBN 616) (Gold) from December 1986 until March 1988.
He commanded USS Jack (SSN 605) from November 1988 until JACK was decommissioned on July 11, 1990. Bruce assumed command of USS ULYSSES S. GRANT (SSBN 631) (BLUE) in August 1990, completing two patrols in command.
Bruce was assigned to the Staff of Commander, Submarine Force Atlantic, Groton, CT and also served as Director of Navy Undersea Warfare for Commander Operational Test and Evaluation Force, Norfolk, VA, before retiring from the Navy. Following his retirement in 2001, he worked for Sonalysts, Inc., in Waterford, CT.
A resident of Gales Ferry for 22 years, Bruce enjoyed his associations in his community. He was an active member of the Groton Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He enjoyed hosting cadets from the United States Coast Guard Academy and was a member of the Ledyard Rotary.
Besides his parents, Bruce is survived by his wife of 29 years, Cecilia Novotny Bullough whom he married
on April 22, 1974 in Salt Lake City, Utah, his son Ben of Arlington, VA, his daughter Liz of Provo, UT and his son Jon of Provo, UT. , his brother Stephen of Sandy, UT, his brother Roger of Florence, AL and his sister Barbara Riherd of Lake Butler, FL.
A funeral service will be held on Monday at 10 o’clock at the Groton Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1230 Flanders Road, Mystic. Interment with Military Honors will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. Visiting hours will be on Sunday from 4 until 6 o’clock at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Perpetual Education Fund, 50 E. North Temple, Salt Lake City, UT, 84150-1501.
Emma E. Lincoln

NEW LONDON, CT - Emma E. Lincoln, 89, of 16 Glenwood Place, New London died Monday at Beechwood Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in New London.
She was born in East Lyme, Connecticut the daughter of George Hewett Lincoln and Mary Emma Holmes Higgins Lincoln.
In 1951, she graduated from the Dale Carnegi Course and later served as an International Vice President of Dale Carnegi School, Northeast.
Miss Lincoln owned and operated Lincoln Auto Body in New London from 1944 to 1976. In 1964, She built the first new building on New London Redevelopment Agency property at the intersection of State Pier Rd. and Crystal Ave.and renamed the business Lincoln Auto Service. Emma was the only woman at the time to be the operator of an auto body shop on her own in the United States. After 1976 Emma worked at the former Y.M.C.A. in New London and also at Waterford Country School.
Emma Lincoln was an active member of the national, state and local Republican party. She was the first woman, Republican or Democrat to be elected as chairman of a political town committee in the State. She has served as a member, chairman and treasurer of the New London Republican Town Committee. She also served as the 20th District Republican State Central Committee Representative. She was a member and former treasurer of the Grass Roots East Republicans. In 1999 Emma Lincoln was recognized by the Connecticut Republican Party at the annual Prescott Bush Awards Dinner by being presented the Pat Futner Award, for longtime dedicated service to the Republican Party.
Miss Lincoln was a member of New London & Middlesex County Multiple Sclerosis Society, New London Red Cross, Connecticut Auto Trades Assoc., Y.W.C.A., a member and former President of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, HOSPICE volunteer, member of the Board of First Step, and in 1963 was the first woman appointed to the New London Redevelopment Agency. She also had served on the Ocean Beach Park Board.
Emma had traveled to every state in the United States and many foreign countries as well.
There are no immediate survivors.
A celebration of Emma’s life and reception will be held at 12 Noon, Monday at the Port N Starboard at Ocean Beach Park. Private burial will in Jordan Cemetery, Waterford. There are no calling hours. George Robert White, Sr.

WATERFORD, CT - George Robert White, Sr., 75, of 608 Vauxhall St. Ext., Waterford died Wednesday night at Beechwood Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in New London.
He was born in New London the son of Leola Merritt White and John F. White, Sr.
He was married
to Ruth Barbara Adams White in Maryland on June 25, 1948. Mrs. White died March 1, 1990.
Mr. White was employed by the City of New London as a custodian at City Hall and retired in 1989 after 35 years of service.
He is a life member of the New London Lodge of Elks #360 and a life member of the F.L.Allen Hook and Ladder Co #1 in New London.
He is survived by 1 son; George R. White, Jr. of Innisville, Ontario, Canada, 1 daughter; Joanne Arpaia of Preston, 3 brothers; Stanley J. White of New London, John M. White of New London and Richard T. White of Quaker Hill, 3 sisters; Dorothy Kelly of Quaker Hill, Mildred Pukas of New London and Marion Heikkinen of Waterford and 2 grandchildren; Frank A. Rubin, Jr. of Preston and Daniel K. Rubin of Montville.
Funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Monday at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London. Interment will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, New London. There are no calling hours.
William H. Vymola

WILLIAM H. VYMOLA age 76 of 23 North Prospect St., Groton died Friday morning, June 20th at his residence.
He was born in Astoria, New York on May 16, 1927 the son of Wilhelm and Louise Podhaisky Vymola. He married
Lois Reedy on January 21, 1977 in Groton.
Mr. Vymola had received a Bachelors degree from Brooklyn Polytechnical School and a Masters degree from Rensselaer at Avery Point in Groton.
He worked for many years as a Mechanical Engineer at Electric Boat Co. in Groton, retiring in 1989.
He was a member of the Shennecossett Yacht Club, the E. B. Management Club and was the Treasurer at the Colonnade Condominium Association in Ft. Pierce, Florida.
Besides his wife he is survived by a son, Greg W. Vymola of East Lyme, a daughter, Sharon D. Vymola of New London, a sister, Elsie Kolarik of California, two stepsons, James Reedy of Washington, D.C. and Michael Reedy of Gales Ferry, and a step daughter Victoria Parchaiski of Mystic and grandchildren, Baylen and Kaylene Vymola, Heather Hudson, Corinne Parchaiski, Amanda and Michael Reedy. He is also survived by a great grand daughter, Celeste Courtney.
Funeral service and interment will be at the convenience of the family. There are no visiting hours. Donations in his memory may be directed to the American Heart Association, 5 Brookside Dr., Wallingford, CT 06492. Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. is in charge of arrangements.

NEW LONDON - Grace Emma Brooks, 89 , of 78 Viets Street, New London and formerly of Pittsburgh, PA died Sunday morning at Nutmeg Pavillion.
She was born November 20, 1913 in Pittsburgh, PA the daughter of William and Etta Burk McCartney.
Mrs. Brooks was married
to Walter George Brooks in Pittsburgh on December 14, 1935. Mr. Brooks died October 24, 1998.
She is survived by 2 daughters; Sally Williams of Waterford and Lana Shepard of Wheatland, WY, 3 Grandchildren and 6 Great Grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday at the Crossroads Presbyterian Church, Waterford. Interment will follow the service in Jordan Cemetery, Waterford. There are no calling hours.
