Phyllis Weaver Duranti, 86, formerly of Eastern Point Rd. in Groton died November 7, 2003 at the Fairview in Groton.
She was born on Mar. 10, 1917 in Cincinnati, OH., the daughter of Herbert and Mabel Carroll Weaver.
Mrs. Duranti was married to the late David D. Duranti on Jan. 8, 1942 in New London. He died on Nov. 10, 1987.
She is survived by a daughter Patricia Sullivan- Walker of Groton, two sons David A. Duranti of Groton, Richard A. Duranti of Quaker Hill, a brother George Weaver of Cincinnati, three grandchildren Dayne Duranti, Stacey Duranti and Krista Duranti.
She had also been predeceased by a sister Mildred Miller and a brother Charles Weaver.
Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tues. Nov. 18, at the Colonel Ledyard Cemetery in Groton. There will be a celebration of her life following at the Groton Lodge of Elks.
Byles- Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. is in charge of arrangements.
Donations in her memory may be directed to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN. 38105

Sally Booth MacIver
Born in New London, Connecticut on Oct. 11, 1915
Departed on Nov. 19, 2003 and resided in East Lyme, CT.

Sally Booth MacIver, 88, of Upper Pattagansett Road in East Lyme died Wed. Nov. 19, 2003 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in New London.
She was born on Oct. 11, 1915 in New London to the late James W. and Helen Harvey Booth.
Sally was married to the late Ian T. MacIver in 1952, her husband died on Jan. 1, 1962.
During World War II, she had worked in London, England as the office manager for the U.S. Transportation Dept. in the Office of War Information.
She was a member of the Flanders Baptist and Community Church in East Lyme.
Sally is survived by a brother William George “Pat” Booth of Waterford, six nieces and nephews.
She had also been predeceased by a sister Janette Booth and four brothers Walker , Frederick, Nathan and Francis Booth.
Burial to be held in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in New London will be private, and there are to be no visiting hours.
Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London is in charge of arrangements.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Flanders Baptist & Community Church, Boston Post Rd., East Lyme, Ct. 06333.

Nancy Pusateri Kratz Drexler
Born in Gloucester, Massachusetts on Jun. 1, 1933

Nancy Frances Pusateri Kratz Drexler, 70, of 69 Turner Rd. in Oakdale, CT. died Mon. Nov. 24, 2003 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in New London after being stricken at home.
She was born on June 1, 1933 in Gloucester, MA. , and had married William C. Drexler on Sept. 27, 2003 in Oakdale.
Mrs. Drexler had worked in the admitting office at the Maryland General Hospital in Baltimore for over 20 years and had attended the Second Congregational Church in New London, Ct. with her husband.
She is also survived by 5 children Linda Foote of New Berlin, NY., Charles Kratz, III of Baltimore, MD., Catherine Krishingner of Hanover, PA., Donna Grove of Felton, PA., Michael Kratz of Baltimore, 5 step-children Karl Drexler of Topeka, KS., Robert Drexler of Pasadena, MD., Kim Doyle of Bellevue, WA., Karen Walker of Stafford, VA., Donald Drexler of Oakdale, CT., 35 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren and her sister Connie Pusateri of Gloucester, MA.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wed., Nov. 26, 2003 at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London, Ct.
Burial will be held in the Elm Grove Cemetery in Mystic.
There will be a visiting hour from 10 to 11 a.m. Wed. prior to the service.
Donations may be directed to the St. Jude Children’ Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN. 38105-9956.

Joseph G. Tal
Born in South Bend, Indiana on Feb. 11, 1912
Departed on Dec. 2, 2003 and resided in Waterford, CT.

Joseph Tal

WATERFORD - Joseph G. Tal, 91, of 94 Butlertown Road, Waterford died Tuesday night at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born February 11, 1912 in South Bend, Indiana the son of Josef and Anna Erdos Tal.

Mr. Tal was married to Hazel Kent Tal who died May 26, 2001

He retired as the Assistant Treasurer of the former New England Savings Bank in 1977.

Mr. Tal was active at the Waterford Senior Citizens, especially at the Senior Lunch Center where for 11 years he handled reservations and the cash for the lunches. Many people recall how he worked on the Waterford Hobby Fairs, even before the present Parks and Recreation Department, and built rafts for young people to use at the beach.

He also had been active in the Groton Boys Club, the YMCA, Waterford Little League and Babe Ruth leagues and AARP. He and his wife enjoyed square dancing and were members of the Pequot Ramblers and the Jolly Squares.

He is survived by 2 sons; Peter Tal of Vero Beach, FL, and Phillip Tal of Branford, 1 daughter; Betsy Tal of Niantic, 5 Grandchildren and 8 Great Grandchildren.

Funeral service and burial will be private. There are no calling hours. Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London is in charge of arrangements. Donations in his memory may be made to the Waterford Country School, 78 Hunts Brook Road, Quaker Hill, CT 06375.

Ruth Standish Ferguson
Born in New London, Connecticut on Dec. 8, 1908
Departed on Dec. 13, 2003 and resided in Waterford, CT.

Ruth Standish Ferguson, 95, of 172 Niantic Rover Rd. in Waterford died Sat. Dec. 13, 2003 at her home.
She was born Dec. 8, 1908 in New London and had graduated from Connecticut College with a degree in teaching.
Following her post-graduate work at Wellesley College, she had been a professor of physical education for many years at Connecticut College.
Ruth is survived by a sister Dr. Helen K. Ferguson, with whom she had made her home, and was predeceased by two brothers Marshall G. & Robert A. Ferguson.
Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London is in charge of arrangements which are to be private.
A cancer survivor, it was her wish that all donations be directed to the Community Cancer Center, c/o Lawrence Memorial Hospital, 365 Montauk Ave., New London, Ct. 06320

William R. Fontaine
Born in Plainville, Connecticut on Mar. 14, 1923

William R. Fontaine, 80, of 91 Buddington Rd. in Groton died Sat. Dec. 13, 2003 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in New London.
He was born on March 14, 1923 in Plainville, Ct. the son of Ralph and Ethel Feelan Fontaine.
He was married to Lorraine E. McGuire on Apr. 26, 1946 in Worcester, MA.
A Navy veteran of World War II, Mr. Fontaine had worked as an Air Force representative at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft for many years.
Bill was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Besides his wife, survivors include a son Paul B. Fontaine of Meriden, CT, a brother Gerald Fontaine of California, a grandson William Fontaine & great-grandaughter Kailey Elizabeth Fontaine both of Bristol, CT.
Funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Thurs., Dec. 18 at the Byles- Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St.
Burial will be held at 11 am Friday at the Colonel Ledyard Cemetery in Groton.

Frances E. Damian
Born in Hermon, New York on Feb. 24, 1920
Departed on Dec. 18, 2003 and resided in Groton, CT.

FRANCES E. DAMIAN age 83 of 222 Poquonnock Road, Groton, died Thursday morning, December 18th at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London.
She was born in Hermon, New York on February 24, 1920 the daughter of Willard and Mildred Moore Ormsby. She married James E. Damian in New York City on February 8, 1947.
Frances had been a secretary for the Supervisor of Shipbuilding at Electric Boat in Groton.
Besides her husband she is survived by two daughters, Helen Kozlowski of Gales Ferry, and Deborah Morehead of Columbus, OH, two brothers, Roger Ormsby of Gouverneur, NY and Jay Ormsby of Salem, NH and two grand daughters, Heather Damian and Elizabeth Morehead.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday afternoon from 1 until 4 o’clock at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. Interment will be in Beech Plains Cemetery, Pierrpont, NY. Donations in her memory may be directed to Christ United Methodist Church, 200 Hazelnut Hill Road, Groton, CT 06340.

George A. Hodges, Sr.
Born in Whitmire, South Carolina on Mar. 11, 1925
Departed on Dec. 23, 2003 and resided in New London, CT.

New London –– George A. Hodges Sr., 78, of Fitch Avenue, died Tuesday at Bayview Health Care Center in Waterford.

Mr. Hodges was born March 11, 1925, in Whitmire, S.C., the second to the youngest of 12 children born to Wade and Vina Hodges.

He joined the U.S. Navy when he was 15, a year earlier than the allowed age. He served during the Korean War and World War II, retiring in 1964. He went on to serve another 10 years in the reserves.

Mr. Hodges married Roxie Mae Lewis on Aug. 24, 1954, in Newbury, S.C. They had three children. The family moved from Florida to Charleston, S.C., before settling in Groton.

He was employed as a porter at Pfizer Inc. for 20 years, retiring in January 1991. He also worked as a chef in several prominent area restaurants.

Mr. Hodges liked to gamble at the Plainfield Dog Track, enjoyed watching the boats sail up and down the Thames River and enjoyed feeding the birds at area parks. He was also a master carpenter and electrician.

Along with his wife, Mr. Hodges is survived by three children, Gloria Gathers and George A. Hodges Jr., both of New London, and Gerald Hodges of Cary, N.C.; a brother, Hugh Hodges of Tennessee; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by 10 siblings.

A private service, with military honors, will be held in Cedar Grove Cemetery. There are no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to Walls Temple A.M.E. Zion Church, 16 Belden St., New London, or St. James Episcopal Church, 76 Federal St., New London.

Byles Memorial Funeral Home, 99 Huntington St., is in charge of arrangements.
