Harold Weiner

NEW LONDON - Harold Weiner, 78, of 56 Admiral Drive, New London died Wednesday evening at Yale New Haven Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born February 9, 1925 in Worcester, MA the son of Albert and Molly Merrims Weiner.

Mr. Weiner enlisted in the US Navy and is a veteran of World War II. Following his military service, he received his private pilots license achieving FAA Commercial Pilot Rating and flew extensively for many years with family and friends.

He was married to Zelda Weiner, his wife of over 50 years who pre-deceased him.

While working at Electric Boat in Groton, Harold decided to go into business for himself. He researched the needed information and in 1952 opened Barry’s Cleaners in the newly constructed Groton Shopping Center on Long Hill Road. Through his hard work and dedication the business enterprise grew to include a total of 9 locations in the region, as well as Barry’s Uniform Rental Co. (BURCO) which he sold in 1990. Today, Barry’s Cleaner’s operates 3 state of the art facilities in New London, Niantic and East Lyme.

Mr. Weiner was an extremely community minded man active in various political, civic, and philanthropic efforts. Some of his activities were as a member, and Past President of the New London Rotary Club where he is distinguished as a Paul Harris Fellow, Member and Past President of the Jewish Federation of Eastern Connecticut, Member and former Board Member of Congregation Beth El, Member of Congregation Ahavath Chesed, Jewish War Veterans, New London Lodge of Elks, Union Lodge of Masons #31, Lawrence and Memorial Benefactor Society (LAMBS), a former Board Member of the Family Service Assoc. of Eastern CT and an honorary Board member, and major benefactor of the Animal Rescue Fund (ARF). He was a member and long time chairman of the New London Redevelopment Agency, and served as Town Chairman of the New London Republican Town Committee from 1972 – 1975.

Harold was also an avid bridge and card player and an animal enthusiast.

He is survived by 2 sons; Ronald Weiner of Charlotte, NC and Barry Weiner of New London, a daughter; Celia Robert of Ledyard, 2 sisters; Jean Firkser and Ethel Lane both of Monroe Township, NJ, his best friend and companion; Geraldine Tom of Niantic and 7 Grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Sunday at Congregation Beth El, 660 Ocean Ave., New London. Burial will be in Beth El Cemetery, Groton.

Memorial observance will be held on Sunday and Monday evenings from 7 – 9 PM at the home of Barry and Cindy Weiner, 62 Reyburn St., New London.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital Development Fund, 365 Montauk Ave., New London, CT 06320 or to a charity of the donors' choice. Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London is handling the arrangements.

Mary E. Grandchamp
Born in New London, CT on Sep. 29, 1942

Mary Grandchamp

Salem, CT – Mary Edith Grandchamp, 61, of 25 Skyline Drive, Salem died Friday morning at Women and Infants Hospital in Providence, RI after a long illness.

She was born in New London, CT , September 29, 1942 the daughter of Richard N. and Mary Babcock Woodworth of Groton.

Mary graduated from New London High School and received a BA in Music from Connecticut College in 1964. She earned an MA in Music Education from Hart School of Music. She was employed as a music education teacher in the New London Public School System.

She was maaried to Robert L. Grandchamp who pre-deceased her in January of 1987.

Mrs. Grandchamp was a well know organist in the area and had been the principal organist at The Pequot Chapel in New London for over 30 years, as well as the organist at the First Baptist Church in New London.

She especially enjoyed the water and her summer time at Pequot Beach in New London.

In addition to her mother and father, she is survived by 1 son; John R. Grandchamp of Norwich, 3 brothers; David E. Woodworth of Farmington, CT, Richard B. Woodworth of Stonington, and William R. Woodworth of Cherry Hill, NJ and her long time companion; Paul Egan of Salem.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 Tuesday at The Pequot Chapel, 857 Montauk Ave., New London. The Rev. Dr. Russell E. Gundlach will officiate. Burial will be in Jordan Cemetery, Waterford. Calling hours will be held at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London on Monday from 4 – 6 PM. Donations in her memory may be made to The Pequot Chapel, C/O Mrs. Reid B. Burdick, 36 Jerome Rd., New London, CT 06320.

Fay F. Dollard
Born in Canajoharie, New York on Aug. 2, 1924
Departed on Dec. 28, 2003 and resided in Groton, CT.

FAY C. DOLLARD age 79 of 196 Mitchell St., Groton went to be with her Lord on Sunday morning, December 28, 2003.
She was born August 2, 1924 in Canajoharie, NY, the daughter of the late Ian and Elnora Failing Flanigan.
Fay married Joseph P. Dollard on January 3, 1948 in Canajoharie. He died May 20, 1995.
Fay graduated from Becker Junior College in Worcester, MA as a medical secretary and met Joseph while working in the personnel office of the Coast Guard in New York City. She was part of the Coast Guard Wives Club, various PTA’s, was a leader in both the Boy and Girls Scouts, was a past president and member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Rebekah, loved camping and traveling, and chauffered her children many miles. Fay also worked at the Fairview Retirement home and as a nurses aide and was active with the toddler Sunday school at Groton Heights Baptist Church. In their retirement years Fay and Joseph wintered in various Florida locations enjoying the company of her siblings and the natural beauty God created in that state. Fay kept herself active as an antique/used items dealer with a booth at the Between the Bridges indoor flea market in Niantic. Fay loved to read, do crossword and jigsaw puzzles, play cards and other games, Scrabble being her all-time favorite. Fay most recently attended the Groton Bible Chapel.
Fay is survived by her three daughters, three sons, a son in law and two daughters in law. Nora Lush and her husband Tom of Manchester, CT, Patrick and his wife Judy of Groton, John and his wife Priscilla of Rennsealer, NY, Susan of Groton, Timothy and his wife Cindy of Groton and Eileen also of Groton. Fay also leaves 15 beloved grandchildren and their spouses, Kathryn and Mark, Christopher, Stephanie, Jennie, Rachel, Maureen, Sarah, Melissa and Rene, Arthur, James, Michelle, Mary, Caitlyn, Colleen and John and three great grandchildren; Liam, Venetia and Janie. Fay is also survived by her two older siblings living in Florida, brother Richard Flanigan and his wife Carol and her sister Jean as well as two sister in laws, Kay Dollard and Julia Holman living on Long Island. Besides her husband and parents she was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Frederick.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 at the Groton Bible Chapel, 54 Toll Gate Road, Groton. Interment will be in Col. Ledyard Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. Donations in her memory may be directed to ALS Association (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis – Lou Gerhig’s Disease), 4 Oxford Rd., Unit D1, Milford, CT 06460 or Hospice of SE CT., P.O. Minnie Grady

Minnie Grady

GROTON - Minnie Grady, 73, of 62 Midway Oval, Groton died Monday morning at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born January 6, 1930 in Atlanta, GA the daughter of James and Carrie Scott Poole.

Mrs. Grady is the wife of Otis Grady, Sr.

She is a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in New London, the Groton Senior Citizens and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 3263.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by 4 sons; Raymond Robinson of Pittsburgh, PA Russell Robinson of Groton, Robert Marc Grady of Norwich and Otis Grady, Jr. of Groton, 1 daughter; Sami Rooei of Chula Vista, CA, 1 brother; Arthur Poole of New York City, 1 sister; Ivory Poole of Philadelphia, 8 Grandchildren and 4 Great Grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by a son; Ronald Robinson.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM Friday at the Shiloh Baptist Church in New London. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery. Calling hours will be held at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London on Thursday from 4 – 6 PM.

Marcos C. Douros
Born in New York City on Aug. 2, 1917

Marcos C. Douros, 86, of 26 Rock Ridge Rd. in Waterford died Tues., Jan. 6, 2004 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in New London.
He was born on Aug. 2, 1917 in New York City the son of Andrew and Ethel Wenzel Douros(Theodorakis), and was married to Felia Karamargin on Dec. 31, 1955 in New London.
An accomplished seaman, Mr. Douros was very proud of his service in both the Coast Guard and Navy during World War II.
He had worked for many years as a sheet metal mechanic for the Local # 40 Sheet Metal Union primarily for the H. R. Hillery Comp. and the Electric Boat Company, both in Groton, retiring in 1984 as a foreman.
Marcos was a member of the St. Sophia Hellenic Orthodox Church in New London and the Sheet Metal Union Local # 40. Considered a highly skilled sheet metal mechanic, Mr. Douros was also an accomplished woodworker.
He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, who besides his wife is survived by two daughters Vaso Williams and Linda Parks both of Waterford, three sons Peter A. and Marcos C. Douros, Jr. both of Waterford, James T. Thomas of Burlington, Ct., a sister Mari Sigros of Waterford and 6 grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Fri., Jan. 9, at the St. Sophia Hellenic Orthodox Church, 200 Hempstead St. in New London.
Burial will follow in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in New London.
There are no visiting Hours.
Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London is in charge of arrangements.
Donations may go to the St. Sophia Church or to Paidea, P.O. Box 818, Storrs, Ct., 06268-818

Joan W. Houlihan
Born in Tennessee on Jun. 22, 1935

Joan W. Houlihan age 68 of 49 Blueberry Hill Road, Groton died Wednesday morning, January 7, 2004 at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Tennessee on June 22, 1935 the daughter of Hugh and Ruth Eddleman Wyrick. She was married to Thomas Houlihan on January 10, 1959. He died January 2, 2001 .
Joan is survived by two sons, Alan T. Houlihan of San Pedro, CA and John H. Houlihan of Groton, a daughter Mary E. Houlihan of Groton and a brother, Larry Wyrick of Oak Ridge, TN as well as two grandchildren, Sarah and Patrick.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 12 noon at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. Private interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Norwich. There are no visiting hours.

Kenneth L. Doten
Born in Upper Mills, Maine on Jun. 17, 1937
Departed on Jan. 11, 2004 and resided in Groton, CT.

Kenneth L. Doten, 66, o 135 Starr Hill Rd. in Groton died Sun. Jan. 11, 2004 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in New London.
He was born on June 17, 1937 in Upper Mills, ME., and had been a Navy veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Doten was married to Sandra Crowly Doten on Apr. 19, 2003 in Groton.
He had worked for 40 years as a journeyman & lineman for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union of which he was a long time member.
Besides his wife, he is survived by five daughters, Lisa & her husband Bill, Tanya & Stephanie all of Mass., Wendy and Tammy of Canada, one son Peter Doten of New Hampshire, three step-daughters Lisa and Jennifer of Michigan, Julie of Groton, two sisters Gail & her husband Charles Connick of Canada, Gertrude Doten of Oklahoma, several grandchildren including little Lisa and Phillip.
Byles- Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. is in charge of arrangements which are private. There are no visiting hours.
Donations may go to the Hospice of Southeastern Ct., P. O. Box 902, Uncasville, Ct. 06382.
