PAPA, STEPHEN J.
May 2, 2010
Stephen J. Papa Sr., 92, of New Haven passed away May 2, 2010 in St. Raphael’s Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Helen Lupoli Papa. Mr. Papa was born in New Haven July 24, 1917, son of the late John H. and Lucy Merola Papa. He was a 1936 graduate of Hillhouse High School, and attended So. Conn. State University and Stone Business College. He was an active member of the CT. National Guard during World War II. Addition to his career in the family fruit business, Papa & Sons Open Air Market at Chapel and Orchard St. in New Haven, he served as vice president of the William Hotchkiss Co. and was an active real estate developer in New Haven and surrounding towns. Active in community affairs, he chaired the New Haven Board of Education for 10 years; served on the Public Housing Commission for 8 years; City Plan Commission for 6 years and New Haven Welfare Board for 4 years. He championed the ACES program to improve public education; was active in the Livable Cities Initiative and initiated and chaired the Dwight Neighborhood Development Corporation. He volunteered at the Hospital of St. Raphael and Grimes/St. Regis Health Care Center for many years. He was a Life Member of The Amity Club, Past President of the Exchange Club and a life member of Commodore John Barry Assembly, 4th Degree, Knights of Columbus. He also served as Republican Town Chairman. Well known for his role as Santa Claus, he lit the Christmas Tree on the Green for 67 consecutive years. He also played the role of Christopher Columbus in the annual Columbus Day celebration. He was honored by having the corner of Chapel and Orchard St. designated as “Stephen J. Papa Corner”. Besides his wife of 68 years, he is survived by two sons, Atty. John S. (Rosemary) Papa of Manchester and Stephen J. (Carol) Papa Jr. of Branford; a daughter, Patricia Sweeney of Portland, Maine; two brothers, Arthur (Elizabeth) Papa of Orange and John Papa of San Francisco; a sister, Paula Caruso of North Haven; 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sisters, Rose Thomas and Mary Avitable. Friends may call at The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight) New Haven Wednesday from 3 to 8 pm and are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Brendan’s Church, 455 Whalley Ave., New Haven Thursday, May 6th at 10:00. Interment in St. Lawrence Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Stephen J. Papa Fund, c/o St. Raphael’s Foundation, 1450 Chapel St., New Haven, CT 06511.

AMORATIS, JOHN A.
April 28, 2010
John A. Amoratis, 47, of 59 Collingsdale Drive, Milford passed away April 28, 2010 in Yale New Haven Hospital as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident on Saturday. Born in Andros, Greece on April 15, 1963, he was the son of Antonios I. and Vasiliki Giannisis Amoratis of Milford. He was co-owner of ALFA Fuel Co. and operated ALFA Bros. Trucking, ALFA Pizza Restaurant and Jolly Jug Liquor Store. He was a long time Harley-Davidson fancier and was much loved and respected by family, friends, and all who knew him. Besides his parents, he is survived by a son, Nicholas Ryan Amoratis of Milford; a brother, Mike Amoratis of Milford; a sister, Lea Loussides and brother in law, Nick Loussides of Branford; a nephew & niece, George & Kiki Loussides, of Branford; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and a legion of friends. Friends may call at St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, 480 Racebrook Road, Orange Friday from 5 to 10 pm and are invited to attend funeral services in the church Saturday, May 1st at 9:30. LOPEZ, ANA
April 24, 2010
Ana Maria Soto Miranda Lopez, 76, formerly of 25 Hard St., New Haven passed away April 24, 2010 in The Arden House, Hamden. Born in Coamo, Puerto Rico on June 18, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Isabelo Soto and Elena Miranda Soto. She worked as a teacher’s aid at St. Francis Home for Children for 25 years until her retirement. She was very active in the Sacred Heart Church community and had a strong commitment to the Hispanic Community in New Haven. She served on the Inaugural Ball Committee for former Mayor John C. Daniels. She is survived by one son, Ernie Lopez of New Haven; two daughters, Abigal (Saturnino) Gonzalez of Orlando, FL. and Laurie Lopez of New Haven; two sisters, Carmen Soto and Alicia Miranda, both in Puerto Rico; and four grandchildren, Kevin, Nanette and Rebecca Gonzalez and Emery Johnson.
Friends may call at The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight) New Haven Thursday, April 29th from 8:30 to 9:30 and are invited to attend a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial in St. Anthony’s Church, 70 Washington Ave., New Haven at 10:00. Final services and interment will take place in Puerto Rico.

TEODOSIO, LOUISE "GIGI"
April 9, 2010
Louise “Gigi” Girolomoni Teodosio, 92, of Silverbrook Estates, 100 Red Cedar Road, Orange, passed away there on April 9, 2010. She was the widow of celebrated Neopolitan singer, radio personality and restaurateur Frank Teodosio and was a former resident of Rolling Ridge Road in Orange. Mrs. Teodosio was born in New Haven Sept. 21, 1917, daughter of the late Angelo and Battista Battisti Girolomoni. When she was 4 years old, her mother took her and her brother to Italy. When Gigi was 9, her mother attempted to return to the US with her children. Mussolini was in power in Italy and the government tried to block their return. When they returned to West Haven, Gigi attended West Haven public schools and was voted “most witty” and “most beautiful” in her class. She became an accomplished pianist, and, in her late teens started her own girl’s band called “Lou Moni’s Band”. She made her debut at the old Hejaz Grotto at Howard and Columbus Avenue in New Haven. She and her husband married in 1940 and she joined him in the operation of his coffee shop, “Café degli Artisti” on Franklin St., the forerunner of the well known Frankie’s Restaurant at Chapel and Franklin and it’s famous “tabala calda” steam table. There they hosted many personalities such as Frankie Avelon, Louis Armstrong, the Four Aces and George H.W. Bush. When Redevelopment came thru to make way for the Wooster Square Project, they relocated to Orange and opened Frankie’s Villa Pompeii on the Post Road. In her retirement, Gigi divided her time between Florida and Connecticut. She was a long time member of the Ladies Guild at Holy Infant Church. A loyal and steadfast friend, she was always a stylish dresser, a wonderful cook and the perfect hostess. She is survived by her loving children, Nicholas F. (Linda) Teodosio of New Port Richey, FL., Frank (Carol) Teodosio Jr. of Orange, Teresa Cavaliero and Frances Gloria (Gus) DeSanty both of Milford; a sister, Mary Frangi of Branford; a sister in law, Sue Teodosio of West Haven; 11 devoted grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, William Girolomoni. Funeral from The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight) New Haven Monday, April 12th at 9:45. Mass in Holy Infant Church, 450 Racebrook Rd., Orange at 10:30. Friends may call prior to the funeral from 8:30 to 9:45. Interment in St. Lawrence Cemetery.

ACQUAVITA, ANNETTE
April 7, 2010
Annette “Babe” Fontana Acquavita, 91, of 451 North High St., East Haven, formerly of 315 Eastern St., New Haven, passed away April 7, 2010 in Yale New Haven Hospital. She was the widow of Joseph Acquavita. Mrs. Acquavita was born in New Haven Sept. 30, 1918, daughter of the late Biagio and Mary Ricciuti Fontana. She attended Stone Business College and was employed by Yale University for 14 years prior to her retirement in 1985. Before that, she worked at Union Trust Co. She is survived by a son, Fred (Marie) Acquavita of Hamden; a daughter, Mary (Jesse) Abarca of Denver, CO.; two sisters, Rose Barone of Boca Raton, FL. and Frances Votto of East Haven; 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by three brothers, Anthony, Frank and Andrew Fontana. She was a gentle woman who loved big earrings and bright colored necklaces. She considered all people to be her friend. A tribute can be viewed on You Tube entitled “Babe Remembered”. Funeral services will be held in Florida at a later date.Donations in memory of Annette can be made to St. Thomas’s Day School Scholarship Fund, 830 Whitney Ave., New Haven, CT 06511.

VITALETTI, MICHAEL A.
April 6, 2010
Michael A. Vitaletti, 81, of 279 Jones Hill Rd., West Haven passed away April 6, 2010 in Grimes/St. Regis Health Care Center. He was the husband of the late Barbara Horvath Vitaletti. Mr. Vitaletti was born in New Haven Sept. 13, 1928, son of the late Henry G. and Maria Marrandino Vitaletti. He worked as a tire builder for the Armstrong Rubber Co. for 36 years until his retirement in 1981. He served as a member of the Allingtown Vol. Fire Dept. and the West Shore Vol. Fire Dept. for 25 years before being designated a Veteran Fireman in 1981 He served in the US Army during the Korean War and was a very loyal New York Yankee fan. He is survived by two daughters, Betty Ann (James) Battista of East Haven and Marie (Charles) Cretella of West Haven; two grandchildren, Jennifer Battista and Michael Cretella; and a great grandson, Christopher Lancio. Dwight) New Haven Thursday from 4 to 8 PM and are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Victory Church, 600 Jones Hill Rd. Friday, April 9th at 11:00. ONOFRIO, LOUIS Jr.
April 5, 2010
Louis Onofrio Jr., 53, of Carmel, CA., formerly of New Haven and Bethany, died on April 5, 2010 in Carmel as a result of liver complications. Born in New Haven Oct. 1, 1956, he was the son of Louis and Maureen McCarthy Onofrio of Palm Beach Gardens, FL., formerly of Stevenson Road, New Haven and Bethany. Louis grew up in New Haven and Bethany and was a graduate of The Gunnery School in Washington, CT. Besides his parents, he is survived by his sister Kathleen Onofrio and brother in law, Dr. Steven Merriam of San Diego, CA.; his brother, Christopher Onofrio and nephew Dominic Onofrio, both of North Haven; uncles Pat (DORN) Onofrio of Branford, Anthony Onofrio of Jupiter, FL., Dennis McCarthy of Palm Beach Gardens, FL., Jack McCarthy of La Quinta, CA., Robert, William & Jamie Onofrio; and an aunt Roberta Onofrio, all of Connecticut; as well as his step grandmother, Helen Onofrio of Hamden. SIGNORE, CARMELINA (AMATO)
March 27, 2010
Carmelina (Amato) Signore, 94, formerly of Lucy St., Woodbridge, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2010 in The Arden House, Hamden. Born in Woodbridge Feb. 17, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Dominic and Antoinette Perrotti Amato. She was employed by D & I Shirt Co., Greist Manufacturing Corp. and The Teresa Signore School of Dance. In 1963, she opened La Port de Bras, a small specialty store in New Haven, where she enjoyed assisting her many customers for 25 years until her retirement. She loved her family, animals, her Italian heritage, cooking and line dancing. She is survived by her daughter and son in law, Teresa and Larry Clark of Gulf Breeze, FL.; a sister, Ida Luciani of Woodbridge; her three grandchildren, Kerry and William Palmer and Heather Clark; and her three great grandchildren, Jack, Will and Cole. She was predeceased by her sisters, Mary Mangino, Anna Fasulo and Rosalina Carasone. Funeral from The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight) New Haven Wednesday, March 31st at 9:15. PINA, DOLORES
March 26, 2010
Dolores Hayden Pina, 78, of 122 Cedar St., New Haven passed away March 26, 2010 in Yale New Haven Hospital. She was the former wife of the late Louis Pina. Mrs. Pina was born in New Bedford, MA March 20, 1932, daughter of the late Arthur DaLomba and Rose Hayden. She lived in New Haven for the past 45 years. She worked as a telephone operator for SNET before her retirement in 1976. She is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Hayden-Galvin of New Haven; a grand daughter, Lesleh Galvin of New Haven; a great grandchild, Ian Alston; two sisters, Anna Anastacio and Rosalie Pimental, both of New Bedford, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by four sisters, Phyllis Ballard, Eleanor Rodrigues, Bernice DaCosta and Doris Gomes. Friends are invited to attend funeral services in The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight) New Haven Wednesday March 31st at 11:00. Interment in Beaverdale Memorial Park.

KIRTOPOULOS, ANNA
March 25, 2010
Anna Toustoglou Kirtopoulos, 87, of 29 Howard Ave., Derby passed away March 25, 2010 in Griffin Hospital, Derby. Mrs. Kirtopoulos was born in Greece on May 22, 1922. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Waterman-Bic Corp. An active member of St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, she participated in baking for the Odyssey Festival, as well as for Christmas and Easter events. She is survived by a daughter, Stavroula “Roula” Kariofyllis of Derby; two sons, William (Diane) Kyrtopoulos of North Haven and Jim Kirtopoulos of Northford; a sister, Plouheria in Greece; 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
