Elsie Konstantino Dambakelis, 83, of Center Road, Woodbridge, passed away June 12, 2009 in Griffin Hospital, Derby after a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of the late William E. Dambakelis. Mrs. Dambakelis was born in Derby on June 26, 1925, daughter of the late Peter and Katherine Salakas Konstantino. Very active in the Greek Orthodox Community of St. Barbara, she served as assistant secretary of the Church for several years; was a member of the Church Choir, the Odyssey Festival Committee, a member of the Board of Directors of the Philoptochos Society of St. Barbara, and a former member of Mycale Chapter No. 137, daughters of Penelope. She is survived by a son, Peter E. Dambakelis of Woodbridge; a step son, Lewis E. Dambakelis of Seymour; a brother, Theodore Konstantino of Dunedin, FL. and a sister, Cleo Apotria of Hamden. She was predeceased by two brothers, Charles and Arthur Konstantino and a sister, Stella Gatzeras.
Friends may call at St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, 480 Racebrook Road, Orange Sunday from 6 to 9 pm and are invited to attend funeral services Monday, June 15th at 10:30. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Barbara Church.

MANDICZ, VICTOR (ZENON)
June 5, 2009
Victor (Zenon)Mandicz, 83, of Orange, passed away June 5, 2009 at his home. He was the husband of Irene Dziubina Mandicz. Mr. Mandicz was born in Kolomyja, Ukraine June 8, 1925, son of the late Peter and Antonina Melnychuk Until retirement in 1990, he was a foreman for Ross and Roberts. He served in the Military in Ukraine and was a member of St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church. Besides his wife of 59 years, he is survived by two sons, Ihor (Valentina) Mandicz of Tannersville, PA. and Myron (Renee) Mandicz of Great Meadows, N.J.; two daughters, Oksana (Michael) Hoobchaak of Springfield, VA. and Chrystyna (Frank) Centore of Orange; a sister, Irene Brejewa in Ukraine; and nine grandchildren, Alexander, Thomas & Khrystyna Mandicz, Daria & Gregory Hoobchaak, Katherine & Kristen Mandicz and Daniel & Arianna Centore. He was predeceased by a brother, Eugene Melnychuk

AVITABLE, JOSEPH
May 29, 2009
Joseph Avitable, 92, of 164 Coe Ave., East Haven, passed away May 29, 2009 in The CT. Hospice, Branford. He was the husband of the late Anne Crowley Avitable. Mr. Avitable was born in New Haven March 11, 1917, son of the late Ferdinando & Helen Pirodi Avitable. He worked as a bookkeeper for many years, was a founder and past president of the Annex YMA, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by a son, Jay B. (Lisa) Avitable of Branford; a daughter, Linda (Robert) Douglas of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a sister, Anna Avitable of New Haven; 3 grandchildren & 3 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by five brothers, Gene, Fred, Carmen, Hubert & Edward Avitable; and three sisters, Eleanor Avitable, Antoinette Ruotolo & Jennie Stella.

TORELLO, MARY GRACE
May 22, 2009
Mary Grace Torello, 95, of 74 1/2 Hunt Lane, East Haven, passed away May 22, 2009 in St. Raphael’s Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was the widow of Joseph J. Torello. Mrs. Torello was born in New Haven Dec. 9, 1913, daughter of the late John and Jennie Riccio Tomaso. Prior to her retirement, she was an assembler for the Henry Richards Co. and for Tag-A-Long for more than 25 years. She was also a dedicated mother and grandmother. She is survived by three sons, John A. and Joseph A. Torello, both of East Haven and Richard T. Torello of New Haven; a daughter, Barbara Torello of New Haven; a sister, Susie Milano; 11 grandchildren & 23 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by three brothers, Joseph, James & Louis Tomaso and a sister, Margaret Barbetto.

FALCO, DOROTHEA E.
May 11, 2009
Dorothea E. Falco, 93, widow of Thomas Falco of Derby Ave., West Haven died May 11, 2009 after a peaceful five day sleep at The Connecticut Hospice in Branford, with outstanding and compassionate care by everyone attending her. Except for the birth of her children, this was her only overnight hospital stay. Dorothea, or “Dot”, especially loved the one acre homestead in West Haven which she and Tom purchased in 1938. Her gardens and year round bird feeders provided great joy. Cooking and shopping for bargains were skills that she taught her children and grandchildren to sustain themselves. Born in New Haven on Jan. 25, 1916, she was the daughter of the late John E. and Anna Smith Gilbert. Dorothea shopped three times weekly, right up to the age of 93. Until she let her sons do it during the last winter, she was in her favorite stores, reading the weekly ads, making lists, and conversing with staff and fellow shoppers. Family was her paramount goal. She and her sons were confirmed members of Trinity Lutheran Church in New Haven. She is survived by two sons, Thomas G. and Richard A. Falco, both of West Haven; son in law, James P. Dinneen of Guilford; grandson, Stephen Neal and his wife, Amy of Cromwell; her beloved granddaughter, Sherri Stearns, her husband, Stephen and their son, Kyle of Shannock, R.I. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her daughter, Carol Kasulaitis; her brother, Norman Gilbert and her sister, Marjorie Cosgrove. Dot was especially proud of her great grandson, Kyle and his family love of reading and science. Dot always liked reading and doing crossword puzzles. (She appreciated the CT. POST printing two puzzles). She encouraged and shared in her sons’ passion for Detroit Tigers baseball, Yale University football, reading, astronomy, bird watching, gardening, the art of Pablo Picasso and the practice of Tai chi chuan. In accordance with her wishes, Dorothy’s body has been donated to the Yale University School of Medicine. There will be no calling hours and any memorials her grandchildren wish to organize will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to The Connecticut Hospice, 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT 06405. And, finally, Do a surprise good deed for someone.

GENCOLA, ANNETTE
May 10, 2009
Annette Gencola of 67 Albion Ave., West Haven, passed away May 10, 2009 in The CT. Hospice, Branford after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Michael Gencola. Mrs. Gencola was born in New Haven, daughter of the late John and Rose Santora Mezzanotte. She worked for the former Seamless Rubber Co. as a floor lady for 8 years and was the former owner of the Allingtown Deli & Pizza. She is survived by a brother, Frank Mezzanotte of Milford and several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Donny Gencola; three sisters, Mary Prete, Rae Nuzzo and Peggy Maturo; and two brothers, Peter Mezzanotte Dane & Nicholas Mezzanotte Dane.

Mae (Margaret) C. Corso, 101, passed away in New Haven May 10, 2009. She was the wife of the late Stephan A. Corso and was a former resident of 835 Mix Ave., Hamden. Mrs. Corso was born in New York City Nov. 3, 1907, daughter of the late Augustino and Mary Conti and moved to New Haven as a child. She was a member of The Guild of the Tabernacle at St. Brendan’s Church, the Notre Dame Mother’s Club, and the auxiliaries of The Hospital of St. Raphael, St. Anthony’s Home and St. Francis Home for Children (Highland Heights). She is survived by a daughter, Angela (Frederick R.) DiGioia of Branford; two sons, Thomas J. (Kathleen) Corso of Grants Pass, OR. and Robert A. Corso of San Francisco, CA.; three grandchildren, Brian & Jeffrey Corso and Lynn Alison Cone; and four great grandsons. She was predeceased by three brothers, Joseph A., Louis F. and Rudy Conti; and a sister, Mrs. Helen Siclari.

Mary Amato Pinto, 92, of 30 Judith Lane, East Haven, passed away May 9, 2009 in The Connecticut Hospice. She was the beloved wife of the late Anthony J. Pinto. Born in New Haven March 4, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Catherine Arpaia Amato. She worked as a loan officer for the New Haven Redevelopment Agency for many years. She was a volunteer at the Hospital of St. Raphael for 18 years and was a member of Lodge 37, Sons of Italy. She is survived by a daughter, Frances (Robert) Festa of Canton; a son, Anthony J Pinto Jr. of Clinton; six grandchildren, Maria, Audra, Nicole, Erica, Robert & David; and 3 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by two brothers, Gabriel & Ralph Amato.

Angelina Barra Vitello, 94, of Hamden passed away April 29, 2009 in The Arden House after a lengthy illness. She was the widow of John Vitello Sr. Born in New Haven June 11, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Tommaso and Elizabeth Mazzara Barra. She worked as a machine operator prior to her retirement. She is survived by three sons, John Vitello Jr. of West Haven, Joseph Vitello of Cheshire and Frank Vitello of New Haven; one daughter, Elizabeth Brady of Hamden; a brother, Raymond Barra of Hamden; 23 grandchildren and many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Arthur Vitello; a brother, Nicholas Barra and a sister, Lena Alegi.

Richard Buchmeier Sr., 78, of 587 Elm St., New Haven died April 29, 2009 in St. Raphael’s Hospital after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband for 52 years of Erna Hein Buchmeier. Born in Reigensburg, Germany on March 1, 1931, he was the son of the late John and Theresa Buchmeier. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Richard Buchmeier Jr. of Cheshire; two daughters, Debra Cartier and Veronica Oquendo, both of New Haven; two sisters, Linda Nobile of East Haven and Rosy Bruecklmeier of Munich, Germany; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 58 years, Vincent Salerno; one daughter, Jennifer Salerno of New York City; and a sister, Matilda Jenschke of North Haven. She was predeceased by two brothers, Salvatore & Michael Ingrao.

Kathleen Catenza Tufano, 88, of 645 Saybrook Road, Middletown, passed away April 18, 2009 in Middlesex Health Care Center, Middletown. A former resident of 55 Overlook St., West Haven, she was the widow of Dominic Tufano. Mrs. Tufano was born in West Haven Feb. 10, 1921, daughter of the late Antonio and Maria Franco Catenazzo. She worked as a foot press operator for West Haven Buckle for 20 years prior to retirement. She was a member of St. Paul’s Parish in West Haven for over 70 years. She is survived by a son, Richard L. Tufano of West Haven; two daughters, Patricia A. Cowles and Laura L. (Arthur) Siegartel, both of Durham; two brothers, Harry Catenza of West Haven & Raymond Catenza of Clinton: two sisters, Anna Galla of West Haven & Delores Testa of Madison; nine grandchildren, Jennifer & Matthew Cowles, Stephanie Spadaccini, Corinne, Anthony & Richard Tufano Jr., Joshua, Raymond & Andrew Siegartel; five great grandchildren, Jordan, Tayler & Brady Cowles, Carlina Rose & Evan Spadaccini.She was precedeased by a son, Donald A.
