Marion Ciarleglio Mendillo, 93, of Amity Road, Woodbridge, passed away April 16, 2009 in Harborside Willows of Woodbridge. She was the beloved wife of the late Albert A. Mendillo and was a former resident of 700 Legion Ave., New Haven. Born in Orange on Oct. 16, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Giovanni & Prudenzia LaPorta Ciarleglio. At one time, she worked as a bookkeeper for several area businesses. She was a former member of the Melebus Club, the Village Unity League and the First Friday Crusade of St. John the Evangelist Church. She is survived by a brother, John Ciarleglio of Southbury and several loving nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by an infant son, Albert Mendillo Jr.; four brothers, Sylvester, Dominic, Fred and Anthony Ciarleglio; and four sisters, Jennie Augustine, Maria Petrosino, Assunta (Sue) and Louise Ciarleglio.
Funeral from The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight) New Haven Monday, April 20th at 10:20. Mass in St. Paul’s Church, First Ave., West Haven at 11:00. Friends may call prior to the funeral from 9:00 to 10:15. Interment in St. Lawrence Cemetery.

VIOLA, ANASTASIA
April 15, 2009
Anastasia (Tessie) Gelagotis Viola, 68, of 373 Jones Hill Road, West Haven passed away at home on April 15, 2009. Born in Mytelene, Greece on Dec. 14, 1940, she was the daughter of the late John and Pousoula Bankides Gelagotis. She worked as a waitress at Broadway Pizza for 20 years; and was a cashier at Edwards Supermarket in Orange; at Brooks Pharmacy in Milford; and was working at Rite-Aid at the time of her death. In her youth, she was an accomplished basketball player. She was a proud woman, devoted to her family. She is survived by a son, Joseph (Maureen) Viola Jr. of West Haven; a brother, Charles (Patricia) Gelagotis of New Haven; a sister, Mrs. Stella Galagotis of Farmingdale, N.Y.; a devoted grandson, Joseph Viola III; a brother in law, George D’Agostino; and 11 nieces and nephews, Harry & Alexandra Pappas, Maria Verab, Nikki Xanthoudakis, Joanne Chryssos, Charlotte Kinney, Theresa Garasso, Lisa Davis, George D’Agostino Jr., Kristen Cyr & Michael Gelagotis. She was predeceased by two sisters, Bessie Pappas and Maria D’Agostino.
Friends may call at The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight) New Haven Monday from 4 to 8 pm and are invited to attend funeral services in St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, 480 Racebrook Road, Orange Tuesday, April 21st at 10:30 AM. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery. Contributions may be made to St. Barbara Church Building Fund.

CARTOCETI, MICKEY
April 9, 2009
Mickey (Amadio A.) Cartoceti, 82, of 51 Schilf Road, Bethany, died peacefully at home April 9, 2009 surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Norine Mel Cartoceti. Mr. Cartoceti was born in New Haven Dec. 18, 1926, son of the late August and Osmide Malavasi Cartoceti. He was a finish carpenter and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was appointed to the New Haven Police Dept. in 1951 and retired as a Superintendant in 1984 after 33 years of service. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he is also survived by a son, Mel (Fran) Cartoceti of Killingworth; a daughter, Judy (Bill) Kerin of Bethany; five grandchildren, Marissa, Andrew and Matthew Cartoceti, Megan and John Kerin. He was predeceased by two sisters, Louise G. D’Onofrio and Ann M. Tassi.
Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Center Road, Woodbridge Thursday, April 16th at 10:00.

KISH, IRMA
April 9, 2009
Irma Barbieri Murach Kish, 93, of Townsend Ave., New Haven, was called to heaven April 9, 2009 after a short illness. Born in Hardwick, VT. July 27, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Carmine and Rose DeMeola Barbieri. She lived in West Haven for several years, working in her mother’s restaurant in Old Savin Rock; at the Wire Rope Corp. during World War II, and later at George & Harry’s Restaurant in New Haven. She was a professional seamstress and worked for Sunbeam Dress Shop and Mode Mfg. During the 1950’s, she played the mandolin with a New Haven orchestral group. Irma was a member of East Shore Senior Center as well as Jolly Time Seniors and enjoyed her many friends, participating in line dancing, card playing, trips and socials. She is survived by two beloved daughters, Joan Murach Funaro of East Haven and Gail Murach Bontatibus of Surprise, AZ.; a grandson, Kenneth J. Bontatibus; and her much loved son in law, John Funaro of East Haven; and several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Anthony & Joseph Barbieri and two sisters, Alba Trotta and Molly Barbieri.

ALICEA, AWILDA
April 2, 2009
Awilda Alicea, 59, of 488 Woodward Ave., New Haven passed away on April 2, 2009 at her home after a brief illness. She was the widow of William Alicea. Mrs. Alicea was born in Utuado, Puerto Rico on Oct. 19, 1949, daughter of the late Eusebio and Ana Cintron. She came here as a child and at one time, she worked in the New Haven School System. She is survived by three daughters, Janie & Cynthia Alicea, both of New Haven and Malinda Alicea of Waterbury; two brothers, Arthur Gonzalez of Milford & Jose Cintron of East Haven; three sisters, Anna Quinones & Yvette Cintron, both of New Haven and Dianet Caraballo in Puerto Rico; and four grandsons.
Friends may call at the Second Star of Jacob Church, 201 Chapel St. Monday, April 6th from 6 to 9 pm. Interment Tuesday morning in St. Lawrence Cemetery.

ORSINI, MARY
April 2, 2009
Mary Palmieri Orsini, 97, formerly of 15 Donna Lane, West Haven, passed away April 2, 2009 in Haven Health Center – Soundview, after a lengthy illness. She was the widow of William B. Orsini. Mrs. Orsini was born in New Haven July 7, 1911, daughter of the late Michele and Immaculata Romano Palmieri. She is survived by three sisters, Tena Parise, Patty Annatone and Margaret Palmieri, all of West Haven; and several nieces and nephews including her care givers, Maria Gilson & Susan Annatone. She was predeceased by her brother, Francis M. Palmieri and four sisters, Adeline Mansi, Frances Vanacore, Ann Popolizio and Rose Pidskalny.

TICOZZI, PETER F.
April 2, 2009
Peter F. Ticozzi "Uncle Pete", 90, formerly of State St., New Haven, passed away April 2, 2009 in The CT. Hospice, Branford. Mr. Ticozzi was born in New Haven Oct. 28, 1918, son of the late Eliseo and Elena Rota Ticozzi. He worked as a carpenter most of his life, but also worked at Churchward Ship Builders in West Haven and for the New Haven Board of Education prior to retirement. He was a member of the former Venezia Club and Polish Falcons Nest 81. He is survived by a sister, Louise Callahan of New Haven; a nephew, Vincent (Marguerite) Fumiatti of West Haven; four nieces, Pamela Callahan of New Haven, Kathleen Riccio of Waterbury, Susan Ferraiolo of Milford and Elizabeth Callahan of Port Charlotte, FL.; 7 grand nieces & nephews and 22 great nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Bruna Fumiatti and a great nephew, Officer Robert Fumiatti, NHPD.

BALKUS, RAYMOND
March 30, 2009
Raymond Balkus of Brainerd Road, Branford, passed away March 30, 2009 in Yale New Haven Hospital after a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Mildred Tostarelli Balkus. Mr. Balkus was born in New Haven, son of the late Michael and Rose Praktin. He was a graduate of Hillhouse and Stone Business School and was a branch manager for the former First Bank prior to entering military service. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his military service, he was a conductor for AMTRAK for 35 years prior to his retirement. He enjoyed traveling, swimming, observing nature and was an avid reader. He was a parishioner of St. Brendan’s Church, a sports enthusiast and a staunch Yankee fan. He was predeceased by a brother, John Balkus and two sisters, Nellie Carmine and Bertha O’Shea.

Alice Pina Hopwood, 91, of 51 Antrim St., West Haven, passed away March 29, 2009 in Yale New Haven Hospital. She was the widow of Adolph C. “Buster” Hopwood. Mrs. Hopwood was born in New Haven Nov. 23, 1917, daughter of the late John and Albertina Pina Araujo. She was the former proprietor of the Flamingo Bar and Grille on Grand Ave. and Del’s Package Store on Howard Ave. in New Haven. She was a member of St. Ann’s Guild for many years. She is survived by a son, Cleveland Hopwood of Houston, TX.; a daughter, Carol Hopwood Curtis of West Haven; a sister, Louise Giles of New Haven; 3 grandchildren, Tonya Bernard & Nicole Decuir, both of Texas and Donald Hopwood of West Haven; 7 great grandchildren; 1 great great granddaughter; and many step grandchildren & great grandchildren. She was predeceased by four brothers, Condence (Frank) Pina Araujo, Albert, Joseph and Arthur (Toto) Pina; and two sisters, Felizmena Fernandes and Philomena Joseph.

RICCI, DOROTHY M.
March 25, 2009
Dorothy M. Sette Ricci, 90, of 17 Mills Drive, West Haven, passed away at home March 25, 2009. She was the wife of the late Armand Paul Ricci. Mrs. Ricci was born in San Lorenzello, Prov. of Benevento, Italy on March 26, 1918. She worked in the Records Office at Southern Conn. State University until her retirement. Prior to that, she was a dispatcher for the former New Haven Ambulance Service. She was a loyal parishioner of Our Lady of Victory Parish. She is survived by her devoted children, William Paul (Dolores) Ricci of North Haven, Mrs. Jean (Fred) Criscuolo of Woodbridge and Dr. Dorothy Ann Ricci, Ph.D. of West Haven, with whom she resided; six beloved grandchildren, Lauren (Thomas) Beland, Paul (Janet) Criscuolo, Jennifer (Chris) Corcoran, Robert (Debby) Criscuolo, Allison & Stephen Ricci; and 14 cherished great grandchildren, Matthew, Sara, Katie, Amanda, Alexandra, Amy, Emily, Teddy, John, Samantha, Genevieve, Elizabeth, Stephen & Jenna.
Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Victory Church, 600 Jones Hill Rd., Saturday, March 28th at 9:00. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery.

ANGELLO, JOSEPH
March 25, 2009
Joseph Angello, 87, of 152 Norfolk St., West Haven passed away March 25, 2009 in Yale New Haven Hospital after being stricken at home. He was the husband of the late Lucille Nusdeu Angello. Mr. Angello was born in New Haven Dec. 23, 1921, son of the late John and Mary Zera Angello. He was head of maintenance for the Orange School System from 1957 until his retirement in 2005. He served as a medic in the U.S. Army during World War II, seeing action in the Battle of the Bulge and the Normandy Invasion on D Day. He was a recipient of The Purple Heart and was a member of the American Legion Post in Orange. He is survived by two sons, Nicholas Montagna of Daytona, FL. and Gary Angello of Middlefield; three daughters, Lorraine (William) Hurlburt of West Haven, Angel Angello and Leigh Angello-Basilone, both of Deep River; a sister, Lucy D’Amico of New Haven; 13 grandchildren & 15 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Robert Montagna; a brother, Carmen Cartibianca; a sister, Mary Aceto; and his first wife, Trudy Edgerton.
