Richard F. Berger, 94, of 189 Alps Road, Branford passed away March 21, 2009 in The CT. Hospice, Branford. A former resident of 30 Rose St., he was the husband of the late Lucy Grava Berger. Born in Schenectady, N.Y. on Nov. 26, 1914, he was the son of the late Henry & Edda Skogstad Berger. He worked as a production planner for Robertshaw Controls until his retirement in 1988. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army Medical Detachment in Europe and North Africa. He is survived by a son, Robert H. Berger of Branford; and two grandsons, Forrest and Shane Skriletz. He was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Ann Skriletz; a brother, John Berger and a sister, Doreen Willoughby.
Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at the First Congregational Church of Branford, 1009 Main St., on the Green, Saturday, March 28th at 11:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Connecticut Hospice, 100 Double Beach Rd., Branford, CT. 06405

MARENNA, MARGUERITE
March 19, 2009
Marguerite Pontillo Marenna of Woodbridge passed away March 19, 2009 in The CT. Hospice, Branford. She was the wife of the late Louis Marenna. Mrs. Marenna was born in Old Saybrook, daughter of the late Domenick and Mary Bernardo Pontillo. She is survived by a son, James L. Marenna of Woodbridge; a grandson, James M. (Bethany) Marenna; a great grandson, Corbin Andrew Marenna; a brother, Domenic Pontillo Jr. of Buffalo, N.Y.; two sisters, Mary Louise Pontillo of New Haven and Lydia MacPherson of North Branford; and several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Vincent & Luke Pontillo and three sisters, Anna Pontillo, Patricia Harris and Alma Cappiello.
Friends may call at The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St., (cor. Dwight) New Haven Sunday from 5 to 7 PM and are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Center Rd., Woodbridge Monday, March 23rd at 10:00. Interment in St. Lawrence Cemetery.

DI VITO, ELIZABETH
March 12, 2009
Elizabeth Lees DiVito, 97, of 44 Strong St. Ext., East Haven, passed away March 12, 2009 in St. Raphael’s Hospital. She was the widow of Cosmo DiVito. Born in Fauldhouse, Scotland on Aug. 12, 1911, she was the daughter of the late David and Robina Lees. At one time, she worked as a bookkeeper for the New Haven Register. Following her retirement, she operated Circle Country Store in North Madison in the early 1960’s. She was a member of Old Stone Church. She is survived by a son, Capt. David F. (Sharon) DiVito, NHFD (ret.) and a daughter, Robina (James) McConnell, both of East Haven; four grandchildren, Kim (Frank) Korwek, New Haven Firefighters Todd (Amy) Parker & Ryan (Jenn) DiVito and James (Debbie) McConnell Jr.; and 14 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Lees and a granddaughter, Lori Ann Sheltman.

Judith Ann “Judy” Polek Zadorojnyi, 70, of 315 Eastern St., New Haven passed away March 12, 2009 in St. Raphael’s Hospital. Born in New Haven March 2, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Rose D’Agostino Polek. She was employed as a security officer for Atlantic Security. She is survived by a daughter, Natasha (Thomas) Madera of Middletown and a brother, Thomas (Barbara) Polek of Ventura, CA. Friends are invited to attend a graveside service in Section 12 at All Saints Cemetery, North Haven Thursday, March 18th at 11:00 AM.

CENTONE, RITA
March 9, 2009
Rita Vastola Centone, 86, of Barrett St., Hamden, passed away March 9, 2009 in Yale New Haven Hospital. She was the widow of Thomas J. Centone. Mrs. Centone was born in New Haven on May 9, 1922, daughter of the late Vincenzo & Rose Pepe Vastola. She was active in St. Rita’s Parish activities. She is survived by a son, Thomas (Susan) Centone of Hamden; a daughter, Judy (Albert) Van Leuvan of East Haven; a sister, Helen DelStritto of Hamden; two grandchildren, Peter & Melissa Van Leuvan; and many nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Frank Vastola and five sisters, Carmella Marchitto, Sue Maraucci, Theresa Giordano, Mary Ruotolo and Anne Izzo.
Funeral from The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight) New Haven Wednesday, March 11th at 10:15. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Rita’s Church at 11:00. Poppy Dabakis Loukakis, 90, of West Haven was called home to the Lord on March 8, 2009. She was the beloved wife of the late John E. Loukakes. Poppy was born in Chicopee, MA. on Nov. 4, 1918, daughter of the late John & Mary Dabakis. She was a devoted parishioner of St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church and was a member of the Golden Years Club and the Ladies Philoptochos Society. She was the cherished mother of Barbara Kieslich of North Haven, James (Halina) Loukakes of Guilford, Joanne (Richard) DiMeola of West Haven and the late Emanuel (Manny) Loukakes. Loving grandmother of Heather & Michael Kieslich, Stephanie DiMeola, Timothy & Victoria Loukakes. Sister of Gregory Dabakis of Hamden, George Dabakis and Helen Stavarakis, both of Springfield, MA.; and the late Charles & James Dabakis and Evelyn Klinakis. Also survived by several nieces & nephews.

SHEATS, GOVERNOR
Governor Sheats III, 63, departed this life Dec. 7, 2007. Born in Athens, GA. July 21, 1944, he was the son of the late Governor Sheats Jr. & Floreen Barnett. He was cared for by his mother until he entered Southbury Training School in 1958 at the age of 14. He was transferred to Hillside Manor in Hartford in 1976, at the age of 32. He came to Marrakech-Cortina House in East Haven in 1991, to be closer to his family. He is survived by 4 sisters, Jackie Sheats & Kathie Simmons, both of New Haven, Frankee Goodman of Hamden & Vicki Watson of Odenton, MD.; a brother, Eddie (Adrienne) Sheats of Hamden; 10 nieces & nephews, 17 great nieces & nephews, and a special niece, Stephanie Hudgens who assisted in his care. Funeral services will be held in The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight) New Haven, Friday, Dec. 14th at 11:00 with the Rev. Dr. C.M. Cofield officiating. Friends may call prior to the service from 10 to 11 AM. Interment in Hamden Plains Cemetery.

PIPER, SCOTT F.
Scott F. Piper of Danbury and formerly of West Haven died peacefully in his sleep at his home on Dec. 8, 2007. He was the fiance of Christine Tsaldaris of Mahopac, NY. Scott was born in New Haven on Jan. 4, 1971 son of Rosemarie Miller Piper of West Haven and the late Joseph B. Piper, Jr. He is also survived by; sisters, Eileen Piper, Gail (Paul) Macholl and Ellen Klakouski all of West Haven; a brother, Ronald Piper of West Haven; his fiancees family, Ernest, Sonja and Lori Tsaldaris all of Mahopac, NY; 2 nephews, 5 nieces and a great nephew. He was operations manager for the Canine Fence Co. in Wilton. He was a graduate of West Haven High School, Class of 1989 and a graduate of Gateway and Albertus Magnus Colleges. An avid hockey player, he played on the high school team, coached afterwards in the West Haven Pee Wee Hockey League and actively has been playing in team leagues. His favorite professional team was the Montreal Canadians in which he attended many of their games in Canada and the U.S. His avocations were the outdoors including fishing and golf and his love for travel. Funeral from Keenan Funeral Home, 238 Elm St., West Haven, Friday morning at 10:15. Mass of Christian burial at St. Lawrence Church at 11:00. Friends may call Thursday from 3 to 8. Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery.

LEWONCZYK, HENRY R. "HANK"
Henry "Hank" R. Lewonczyk, age 64, of Ansonia, beloved husband of 27 years of Judy (Marshall) Lewonczyk, died on Friday, December 7, 2007 at Yale New Haven Medical Center after a brief battle with cancer. He was born on July 12, 1943 in Scranton, Pennsylvania to the late Henry P. and Mary Ann Stone Lewonczyk. He was a retired welder for Allied Signal in Stratford. He enjoyed his many hobbies which included gunsmithing, fishing, boating and a great love of Native American artifacts which he collected. Hank loved cars and motorcycles, especially his Mustangs. In addition to his wife, he is also survived by two sons, Robert Lewonczyk and his wife, Susan, and Christian Lewonczyk, both of Stratford; one daughter, Cindy Prosenak and her husband, Andrew of Stratford; one sister, Mary Ann Borquez of South Carolina; his mother-in-law, Louise Marshall of Bridgeport; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Valerie and Marty Bologna of Stratford; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he had been predeceased by his son, Shane Lewonczyk. Friends may greet the family on Thursday, December 13, 2007 from 4 - 7 p.m. at the Pistey Funeral Home, 2155 Main Street, Street, Stratford. A prayer service will take place at 6:30 p.m. Interment will be private. MCDANIEL, MORSTINE "TINA"
Morstine "Tina" McDaniel, 67, of New Haven, entered into rest on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 at Milford Hospital. She was the widow of James "Jimmy" McDaniel. Born in Spartanburg, SC, August 20, 1940, she was the daughter of Evangelist Josephine Bowe. At the time of her death, she was employed as a Sales Associate at Macys in the CT Post Mall. She was previously employed at Yale New Haven Hospital for over 20 years in the Billing Department and was a licensed real estate Sales Executive for James Mack Properties in South Carolina. Tina received and accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior and was a member of Pitts Chapel UFWB Church. She was a member of the Knickerbockers Golf Club. She led a very active lifestyle enjoying activities such as SHOPPING, traveling, playing golf, bowling, playing tennis, cooking, reading and spending time with family and friends. Her laughter will never be forgotten. In addition to her mother, she leaves to cherish her memories, her daughter, Sylvia Dawkins; a grandson, Khalil Abdus-Salaam (Davon J. Drown); a great grandson, Khamiri Abdus-Salaam, all of New Haven; a sister, Marcelline "Marcy" Bowe of Fort Worth, TX; brothers, Marshall Bowe, Jr. of St. Stephens, SC and David J. Bowe of Grand Prairie, TX. She will be sadly missed by her nieces, April, Johna, Tiffany, Christina, and Nyasha Bowe; a nephew, David J. Bowe; a great nephew, Jonathan Lawrence as well as her friends and acquaintances. A celebration of Mrs. McDaniels life and legacy will be held Thursday, December 13, 2007, at 11:00 AM at Pitts Chapel UFWB Church, 64 Brewster St., New Haven. Ricky D. Pearson, 44, of New Haven, departed this life December 8, 2007. He was the husband of Michelle Pearson. Born in New Haven, CT, October 15, 1963, he was the son of Daisy Pearson and the late Robert Pearson. In addition to his wife and mother, Ricky leaves to cherish his memories, a son, Nicholas and a daughter, Samantha of New Haven; brothers, William and Leroy of New Haven; sisters, Janie of New Haven and Rosa of Hamden; seven nephews; four nieces; a sister-in-law, Alicia Pearson; best friends, Paul Harris and Troy Bryant; and other family and friends. A celebration of Rickys life and legacy will be held Friday, December 14, 2007, at 10:00 AM at the Living Word Ministries, 225 Meloy Rd., West Haven. KARNEY, ELIZABETH HUSTI
Elizabeth Husti Karney (95) of Rockville, MD, native of Shelton, CT, died December 6, 2007. She is predeceased by her husband Walter; son Donald; and eight siblings. She is survived by her son Walter W. Karney, M.D. of Rockville, MD; three sisters Esther Resnik, Irene Lucuk and Julia Shegda; and several nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Shelton Congregational Church 10:30 am, December 22nd. Memorial donations may be made to the church.

SPERRY, LEROY RICHARD (DICK)
Leroy Richard (Dick) Sperry of Guilford, originally of Orange, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2007. Husband of Shirley Fallamal Sperry. Born in Orange on June 1, 1926, son of the late Russell and Anna Peterson Sperry. Father of Lauren L. Von Schaumburg of Parker, CO and Roxanne Grace Sperry of Phoenix, AZ. Also survived by three grandchildren, Brent Richard, Dana and Ashtin Von Schaumburg. Mr. Sperry was a WWII Navy Veteran. After the war he was employed at SNET as a lineman for over twenty-five years. He was also a member of the Guilford Congregational Church and loved to spend time doing woodwork and gardening. Funeral services will be held at the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church St., Guilford on Thursday, December 13, at 1pm. Friends may call Wednesday, December 12 from 6-8pm. HOLLUMS, ERNA
Erna Hollums of West Haven entered into eternal life on December 8, 2007. She was the beloved wife of the late Walter F. Hollums. Loved and admired by her children, she was the devoted mother of Rhonda L. (Michael) Minnix, Walter C. Hollums, Luther P. (Linda) Hollums, Mark V. (Moira) Hollums, Antony W. ( Nancy ) Hollums, Linda G. (Jeffrey) Madden, Mona L. Hollums and Wally D. (Chris) DelVecchio. She was loved by her nine grandchildren, Evonne, Maureen, Valerie Minnix, Nicole, Rebekka, Kenneth Hollums, Raymond and Antony Hollums Jr. and Steven Madden. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the West Haven Funeral Home at the Green. The hours for visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 8pm. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. BURNS, WILLIAM L., JR. (PIANO MAN)
William L. (Piano Man) Burns, Jr., 64, of Branford, formerly of Maine died Dec. 6, 2007 in the W.H.V.A. Medical Center. Father of Patricia (Gino) Clini of Orange, Rebecca (Anthony) Korkodilos and Sandra Burns both of Milford, Christine Burns of West Haven and Danielle Burns of Branford. Brother of Louise Criscuolo and Eric Burns of Branford, Paul Burns (NHFD) of East Haven and David Burns of Thomaston. Also survived by eight grandchildren and several nieces & nephews. Son of the late William L. and Selma Pierson Burns, Sr. He was an Air Force Veteran of the Vietnam era. Friends may call at the PORTO FUNERAL HOME, 234 Foxon Rd. (Rte. 80) WEDNESDAY from 6-8 pm. URBANO, DUILIO
Duilio Urbano of 200 Oak St. West Haven died December 8, 2007 in the Hospital of St. Raphael. Mr. Urbano was born in Amorosi Italy March 24, 1937 son of the late Lorenzo and Maria Galietta Urbano and was a barber and hair dresser for many years. He is the brother of Flora Urbano, Olga Cusano, Maria DeJoy, Armando, Elia and the late Frank and Bruno Urbano. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Funeral from the IOVANNE FUNERAL HOME INC. 11 Wooster Place Wednesday morning at 10. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Michaels Church at 10:30. Burial in St. Lawrence Cemetery.
