Rosemarie C. (Tannoia) Salzano
Rosemarie C. (Tannoia) Salzano, 84, of Stow Street, Middlefield, beloved wife of James Salzano, passed away Sunday, Aug. 8, 2010, at Middlesex Hospital.
Rosemarie was born Sept. 9, 1925, in New Haven, the daughter of the late Joseph and Berta (Roy) Tannoia, and was raised by her aunt and uncle, Philip and Rose (Broncotti) Tannoia. She was employed with Armstrong Rubber Company during World War II. Throughout her life, she was an active member of the St. Colman Church Community. Rosemarie was a foster mother through Catholic Charities for many years.
Her greatest joy was being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Theresa Bagenski and her husband, Robert, James L. Salzano Jr. and his wife, Lynn, MarieAnn Salzano, Steven Salzano and his wife, Carolyn, and Christine Salzano; two sisters, Adele Nuzzo and Dorothy Shepa; a twin brother, Richard Tannoia; eight grandchildren, Florence Bagenski, Thomas Bagenski, Heida-Lynn Bagenski, James P. Salzano and his wife, Amanda, Maygan Salzano-Morello and her husband, Jake, Grant Salzano, Heather Salzan, and Derek Salzano; five great-grandchildren; and many foster children.
She was predeceased by a son, Stephen John Salzano; a sister, Clementina Martino; and two brothers, Onesime and Dominic Tannoia.
The funeral liturgy will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Colman Church, Hubbard Street, Middlefield. Burial will be at All Saint’s Cemetery, Route 17, North Haven, CT. There are no calling hours.

Vincent Piro Jr.
Vincent Piro Jr., 74, of Hemlock Place, Middletown, beloved husband of Carol Piro, passed away, Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, at Waters Edge Health Care Center in Middletown.
He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of the late James and Philomenia (Maresca) Piro. Prior to his retirement, he was employed with Genovese & DiDonno. Vincent was a member of the B.P.O.E. Elks.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his son, Vincent Piro III of Florida; three daughters, Joan Piro of Brooklyn, N.Y., Donna Piro of Florida and Phyllis Russo of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sisters, Marie Schrippa of New Jersey, Elizabeth Mezzo of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Josephine Bellion of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two stepchildren, Claudia Zalewski and her husband, Raymond, and James Reed, all of Middletown; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Myrtle Frazer; his brother-in-law and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Giesbrandt; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, Nicholas Piro.
The funeral service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown. Friends may call at Biega Funeral Home Thursday from noon to 1 p.m., prior to the service.
Jerry Everett
Jerry Everett, 51, of Burlington, Vt., formerly of Middletown, passed away on Jan. 26, 2009, after a long illness.
He was born in Meriden, Jan. 8, 1958, a son of Robert Everett and his wife, Carolyn, of Norridgewock, Maine, and the late Lynette Dame and her late husband, Earl, of Trenton, Ohio.
He is survived by three brothers, Robert Everett of Wallingford, Dale Everett of Skowhegan, Maine and Jeff Everett of Higganum; his three sisters, Peggy Miano of Glastonbury, Pattie Randlett of Hamilton, Ohio and Sheri Thompson of Skowhegan, Maine; several nieces and nephews; a dear friend, Andrew German of Tampa, Fla.; and his beloved pets, Winky and Chaos.
His family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday from 9 a.m. until 9:45 a.m. in The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 N. Main St. Ext., Wallingford. A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. in The Wallingford Funeral Home. Interment will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Meriden.
Kathleen Marie Kelly
Kathleen Marie (Ely) Kelly, 57, of Chester, unexpectedly passed away early Monday morning. Affectionately known as “Mimi, ” she leaves behind her lifelong partner, Timothy Malnoti; her three children, Tracy Johnson and her husband, Wayne, of Portland, Cheryl Handy and her husband, Eric, of Portland and Matthew Kelly and his fiancée, Nicole Shail, of Chester; three grandchildren, Kayleigh and Avery Johnson and Olivia Handy. She is also survived by her parents, John and Rosemarie Ely of Chester; her siblings, Deborah Hall and her husband, Douglas, of Deep River and Patricia Carlson and her husband, David, of Chester; and niece and nephew, Elysha Carlson Mallon and Gregory Carlson.
She was predeceased by her brother, John Ely.
Born and raised in Chester, Kathy spent many years volunteering with the Chester Fife and Drum Corps. In addition to being a musician, she served as the corps business manager. Actively giving back to the drum corps community was of great importance to her. When she was no longer able to carry her drum, Kathy could always be found “working the camping gate” at the annual Deep River Muster. An avid bowler, Kathy was a regular at the lanes in Old Saybrook. She treasured the many adventures she had while traveling with her friends to the annual bowling tournaments. Kathy was an exceptionally caring and compassionate woman who always put her family first. She reached out to those in need and touched so many lives. She was “Mom” to so many more than just her own children. Kathy adored animals. She leaves behind four gloriously spoiled cats, Toby, Lola, Bitty and Slater. Kathy was involved in a long-term love affair … with Mickey Mouse. She was a colossal fan. Her family is blessed with cherished memories of a recent Disney trip with her and her delight at meeting the mouse in person.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Middlesex paramedic Brad Fowler, Old Saybrook Emergency Services, dispatcher Rob Dahlstrom and all others who responded to her call for help. Thank you for everything you tried, it was simply her time to go; God called her home and we will all see her again someday in Heaven.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at 3 p.m., at Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main St., Centerbrook. Visiting hours will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.

Francis Edward Guillemin 'Jerry'
Francis Edward Guillemin “Jerry, ” 76, of East Hampton, died Thursday, May 13, 2010, in Hospice at Portland Care and Rehabilitation Center. This has followed several years of declining health due to the complications of dementia. He was born on May 22, 1933, in North Haledon, N.J., to the late Francis Michael and Lillian Marie (Howard) Guillemin. He would have celebrated his 77th birthday during the week following his death. He graduated from Hawthorne High School, New Jersey, in 1951, before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in early 1952. His major duty stations were aboard the aircraft carriers USS Franklin D. Roosevelt and USS Lake Champlain, as well as the Quonset Point, R.I., Naval Air Station. After his honorable discharge, he worked at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, East Hartford, in the experimental sheet metal and pattern shop. He retired from P&W; in October 1992.
“Jerry” is survived by his wife of more than 54 years, Frances M. (Price) Guillemin. He leaves two children and their spouses: daughter, Kimberly Ann and Helmut Hanelt of South Glastonbury, and Kyle Martin and Kimberly (Bergeron) of East Hampton. His four beloved grandchildren will forever miss their “Grampa” — Alexander Francis Hanelt of South Glastonbury, and Joshua Albert, Jacqueline Ann and Josephine Annette Guillemin of East Hampton. He is survived by a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Gayle and John Babitz of Wayne, N.J.; and two sisters-in-law, Carole Guillemin of Virginia and Carole Price of Florida. He leaves three aunts, one uncle, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Roy W. Guillemin; and an infant grandson, Erich Michael Hanelt.
“Jerry” loved being outdoors, whether walking through the woods or skiing the finest slopes in North America and Europe. He was happiest when spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. A lifelong New York Yankees fan, he was a coach in the East Hampton Little League for many years and later enjoyed watching his grandson, Alex, progress from T-ball through AAU and varsity baseball. With his son, Kyle, he was actively involved in Cub Scouts/Boy Scouts for a number of years. He also followed UConn basketball and football teams. He was a life member of the VFW Post 5095 in East Hampton. The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at St. Francis Hospital and Portland Care and Rehab Center for their compassion and support over the last couple of weeks.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 18, at 11 a.m., in the Spencer Funeral Home, 112 Main St., East Hampton, with the Rev. Richard Allen officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Lakeview Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Michael James Krupa
Michael James Krupa, 22, of Oak Street, Middletown, passed away suddenly.
Michael was born Nov. 11, 1986, in Middletown, the son of James and Barbara (Scalera) Krupa of Middletown. He graduated from St. John’s Grammar School, Xavier High School, Class of 2004, and the University of New Haven, Class of 2009. He completed his internship at CPI Aero, Long Island, N.Y., and was a customer service manager at Wal-Mart, Cromwell.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandmother, Carmela Scalera of Pawleys Island, S.C.; 12 cousins, Theresa, James and Michael John Scalera, Robert, Matthew and Peter Heath, Dominick, Tyler, and Jon Luke Scalera, Daniel Scalera, and Joanna and Samantha Krupa. He is also survived by uncles, Michael, Robert, and Peter Scalera, Stanley Krupa and William Healy; aunts, Mary Heath, Dorothy Healy, Mary Lou and Michelle Scalera and Pat Krupa. Michael was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Robert Scalera, and his paternal grandparents, Anna and Stanley Krupa.
Michael was an avid health enthusiast and loved the gym, snowboarding and especially his family and friends. Michael was a kind and generous spirit, always willing to help others in difficult times. He will be forever cherished and loved by those whose lives he touched.
A memorial Mass will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. John Church, St. John Square, Middletown. Friends may visit with his family on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown. Todd Travis Bower
Todd Travis Bower, 42, of Newington, formerly of Middletown, died Friday, April 10, 2009, at Hartford Hospital. Born in Middletown, he was the son of Patricia (Krauth) Bower of Middletown and Thomas Bower of New Hampshire. He was employed by Shailer Subaru in Middletown.
Besides his parents, he is survived by two sons, Todd T. Bower Jr. and Michael Bower, both of East Hampton; a sister, Tammy Bower; a brother, Thomas Bower; two half-brothers, Thomas William Bower and John Bower, both of New Hampshire; and a niece, Patricia Jane Harkness.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 16, 2009, at 3 p.m. at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Friends may call on Thursday from 2:30 to 3 p.m.
Dorothy Winfrey
Dorothy Winfrey, of Bluegrass Drive, Middletown, born April 2, 1926, lost her battle to a year-long illness on April, 19 2009. She is survived by daughter, Addie Stevens of Norwalk, and grandsons, Raymond and Jason Williams of Middletown, along with a host of family and friends. Services will be held Saturday, April 25, 2009, at Christ Chapel Church, 220 Dixwell Ave., New Haven. Calling hours will be 9 to 10 a.m., with funeral services to follow; all are welcome.
Geraldine ‘Gerry’ Jarzabek
Funeral services for Geraldine “Gerry” (Dubee) Jarzabek, of Portland, wife of the late Stanley Jarzabek, will be held Saturday at 10:15 a.m. at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown, followed by an 11 a.m. funeral liturgy at St. Mary Church, Portland. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Middletown.
Pallbearers are Jack Irwin, James Jarzabek Jr., John Jarzabek, Charles Jarzabek, Joseph Jarzabek Jr., and Ralph Giovonni.

Ellen Gates D’Oench
Ellen Gates D’Oench, “Puffin, ” died at her home on Coleman Road in Middletown on Friday, May 22, at age 78. She was curator emerita of the Davison Art Center, adjunct professor of art history emerita and a former trustee of Wesleyan University.
Mrs. D’Oench attended Miss Porter’s School in Farmington, and interrupted her education at Vassar College to marry Russell “Derry” D’Oench and to raise their family, Peter, Ellen “Dodie, ” Russell “Toby” and Jennifer D’Oench. She completed her education at Wesleyan in 1973, graduating magna cum laude in the same class as her son, Peter. She received a Ph.D. from Yale University in 1979 with her doctoral dissertation, “Arthur Devis: Master of the Georgian Conversation Piece.”
She organized or co-organized nationally-traveling exhibitions, and wrote catalogues on various artists, including Arthur Devis, Jim Dine and Sylvia Plimack Mangold. Her book, “‘Copper into Gold’: Prints by John Raphael Smith (1752–1812), ” was published in 1999 by the Yale University Press. Her courses at Wesleyan focused on topics related to the university’s 20, 000 works on paper. Aided by gifts and by Friends of the Davison Art Center funds, she added about 5, 000 photographs and important prints to the collection. She was a member of the Print Council of America.
Mrs. D’Oench was the first woman to be elected to the board of an area bank, City Savings. In the ’60s she served as treasurer of Homesteads Inc., an organization that facilitated mortgages for low-income homeowners in the greater Middletown community. She was a trustee of Miss Porter’s School, a board member of the Middlesex NAACP and of the Greater Middletown Community Corporation and a corporator of Middlesex Hospital. Many volunteer organizations sought her intellect and vision, and she served as residential chairman of the United Fund; on the Mayor’s Committee for the Children’s Library Annex of the Russell Library; and on the boards of the Middletown Family Service Community Council of the United Fund, the Junior Matinees in Middletown and the Independent Day School in Middlefield. Puffin was one of the founders and a co-chairman of the Friends of the Davison Art Center and a devoted supporter for more than 40 years.
She is survived by her children, Peter G. D’Oench of Cooper City, Fla.; Ellen D. Ruimerman of Higganum and Russell G. D’Oench III of New York City; as well as daughters-in-law, Connie D. D’Oench and Tani H. Takagi; and Paul E. Ruimerman, son-in-law. She was predeceased by her daughter, Jennifer. Mrs. D’Oench is also survived by siblings, Peter Gates, Arthur A. Houghton III, Ada G. Patton and Jonathan Gates; by five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and her devoted dog, Arthur.
There will be a memorial service at the Chapel, Wesleyan University, High Street, Middletown, on Sunday, May 31, at 1 p.m.

Sebastian ‘Mickey’ N. Cannata
Sebastian “Mickey” Nicholas Cannata, 90, of Cromwell, loving husband of Lydia (Branciforte) Cannata for 68 years, passed away on Tuesday, May 19, at Hartford Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Middletown on Jan. 1, 1919, to the late Nicholas and Francesca (Giardina) Cannata, he was the oldest son of nine children.
Mickey was an exceptionally hard worker who developed a plan to accomplish his lifelong dream of owning a successful restaurant and motor inn. After a partnership with his brothers-in-law at the Lord Cromwell Grill on the Berlin Turnpike in Meriden, he and his wife, Lydia, built and managed the Lord Cromwell Restaurant and Motor Inn, and the Knights Inn, in Cromwell, for many years until their retirement 25 years ago. Throughout his career in the hotel and restaurant fields, he was also a prominent residential developer in Middletown, Cromwell and Cape Cod. He was a past member of the board of directors for the Connecticut Restaurant Association and the Connecticut Hotel and Motel Association. Mickey spent his retirement years in Clinton and wintered in Jupiter, Fla. One of his proudest accomplishments was earning his GED the first winter he spent in retirement.
Besides his loving wife, Lydia, he is survived by his three children, Suzanne Rutner and her husband, Alan, Rosemarie Mondani and her husband, Donald, and Michael Cannata and his finance, April Hudyma, all of Cromwell; his beloved grandchildren, Lisa and Lynn Mondani, Amy Bunton and her husband, Stuart, and Tracy Adib-Samii and her husband, Julio, and his great-grandson, Alejandro. Mickey is also survived by two sisters, Lena Kalita of Middletown and Viola Bozzi of Portland, and two brothers, Emanuel Cannata of Middletown and Nicholas Cannata of Portland, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by four sisters, Antoinette Spallone of Middletown, Anna Santavenere of Cromwell, Rose Filetti of Lawrence, Mass., and Helen Marino of Middletown.
The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks and gratitude for the wonderful care and compassion they received from Dr. Sharon Diamen, Dr. Steven Horowitz and all the nurses and support staff at Hartford Hospital.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 26, at 9 a.m., at Cromwell Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m., at St. John Church, 5 St. John Court, Cromwell, with the Rev. Mitchell Sawicki officiating. Interment will follow in the family plot at St. Sebastian Cemetery in Middlefield.
