Mary Solomon Anastasio, 93, of 226 Fountain St., New Haven died January 15, 2010 in St. Raphael’s Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Derby, CT. Nov. 6, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Max and Sadie Solomon. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Ernest H. Anastasio; two sons, Martin R. (Martha) Anastasio of New Haven and Thomas (Helen) Anastasio of Woodbridge; a sister, Pauline Santora of Trumbull; 5 grandchildren, John Anastasio, Heather Cobb, Deirdre Bausha, Danielle Halpin and Ernest Anastasio; and 8 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Harry Solomon and a sister, Gertrude “Goldie” Iaspero. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who adored her family. Her jewels and the loves of her life were her 8 great grandchildren. She was “The Best” and will be missed.
Funeral from The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight) New Haven Monday, Jan. 18th at 10:30 followed by a Graveside Service in St. Lawrence Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 3 to 7 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Anastasio Family Fund; Amity Charitable Trust Fund, P.O. ZIRLIS, DOLORES A.
January 15, 2010
Dolores A. Zirlis, 74, of Hamden, passed away Jan. 15, 2010 in The Connecticut Hospice, Branford after a lengthy illness. She was the widow of Walter F. Zirlis. Mrs. Zirlis was born in New Haven Feb. 17, 1935, daughter of the late John and Victoria Piontek Bysiewicz. She was employed by Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield until her retirement. She loved being in her garden of vegetables and beautiful roses; enjoyed memorable times with her best friends going out to eat, taking trips to the casinos, or rooting for the Red Sox. She adored her three very active grandchildren and will definitely be greatly missed. She is survived by two sons, Steven W. Zirlis of Southbury and Vincent F. Zirlis of Hamden; one daughter, Karen Bevacqua of Milford; and her three grandchildren, Daniel, Meghan and Tyler Bevacqua. She was predeceased by two brothers, George Bysiewicz and Deputy Chief Alfred R. (Alby) Bysiewicz, NHFD (ret.).
Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial in St. Stanislaus Church Friday morning, Jan. 22 at 10:00. Burial will be private and there will be no calling hours. LIND, ELLEN
January 12, 2010
Ellen Lind, 93, formerly of Ocean View St., New Haven, passed away peacefully Jan. 12, 2010 in Bedford, Texas. She was the widow of Edgar H. Lind. Mrs. Lind was born in Bedford (Katonah) New York Sept. 10, 1916, daughter of the late John and Johanna Jugis. After childhood on the farm, she graduated from Katonah High School in 1934 and traveled to New York City, showing her independent spirit at a young age. From there, she made her way to New Haven and graduated from the Grace Hospital School of Nursing in 1941. It was in New Haven that she met Edgar Lind, the “love of her life”. She and her “honey” married in 1943 and settled on Ocean View St. in Morris Cove where they raised their sons, John and Chris. She was a devoted wife and mother. Ellen was a kind and caring nurse for fifty years, working in the hospital and private duty settings, and finally, at the former Cove Manor Convalescent Home before retiring. She loved her garden and was a member of the Morris Cove Garden Club for decades. A self proclaimed “tough old Viking”, she was a Heritage member of Old Stone Church, and spent many hours volunteering there. She and her husband also enjoyed traveling, music and dancing. Her grandchildren have often said how much they admire the individualism and strength of spirit that “Grammy Ellen” embodied, and they loved to hear her many stories. Mrs. Lind is survived by two sons, John (Paula) Lind of Bedford, TX. and Chris (Julie Altmix) Lind of Denver, CO.; and four grandchildren, Hanna, Jessica and Eric Lind and Bethany Lind Thomas.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at Old Stone Church, 251 Main St., East Haven on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Karen Johnson officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the “Save Old Stone” Fund, 251 Main St., East Haven, CT 06512

GYORGYEY, CLARA
January 11, 2010
Clara Takacs Gyorgyey, 75, of Orange, died suddenly Jan. 11, 2010 at Gaylord Hospital, Wallingford. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Ferenc (Frank) Gyorgyey. Born in Budapest, Hungary on May 23, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Laszlo and Sarolta Takacs. She lived in Orange, but maintained an apartment in Budapest. She was a writer, critic, translator and teacher. She attended (Budapest University) ELTE, and Yale University where she majored in English and History of Drama 1957-59. In 1956, she participated in the Hungarian Revolution, and then escaped to the West. She was a master teacher at Yale’s M.A.T. program from 1959 to 1989 while teaching English at Hillhouse High School and, later at North Haven High School. From 1990 on, she was Associate Director for the Medical Humanities at Yale; a contributor to “Critique” Magazine, “World Literature Today” and numerous other publications, both in English and Hungarian. She has served as president of the Exiled PEN American Branch since 1976. In 1972, she began contributing to the selection of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Her literary works include the translation of “Catsplay”, and numerous other Hungarian plays. Books authored by her include “With Arrogant Humility”, “Ferenc Molnar” and “Szerelmetes Szurkapiszka”. Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Katalin and Mari.
Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Infant Church, 460 Racebrook Road, Orange Monday, Jan. 18th at 10:00. She will be buried in Budapest. The reception at Yale will be held at a later date

DE MARTINO, DOMINIC
January 10, 2010
Dominic A. “Nanny” DeMartino Jr., 75, of 54 Gorham Ave., Hamden passed away Jan. 10, 2010 while visiting in Boca Raton, FL. Born in New Haven Aug. 12, 1934, he was the son of the late Dominic and Mary Marchitto DeMartino. He served as a PFC in the US Army. He is survived by a nephew, Vincent DeMartino Jr.; two nieces, Carol (Mark) Youngross and Anna DeMartino; two great nephews, Joseph & Vincent Youngross; and his beloved cousin, Roberta Marchitto Strickland. He was predeceased by his brother, Vincent A. DeMartino. Friends may call at The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight) New Haven Thursday (TODAY) from 4 to 8 PM and are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial in Blessed Sacrament Church Friday, Jan. 15th at 10:00 AM. Interment in St. Lawrence Cemetery.

Sr. Gemma Lifavi, ASCJ of Sacred Heart Manor in Hamden died October 18, 2004. She was born in Grammichele, Italy October 15, 1915 a daughter of the late Agrippino and Rosa Laferla Lifavi. Sr. Gemma entered the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus January 3, 1940, professed her first vows August 24, 1942 and her perpertual vows on August 22, 1950. She was a dietician at St Michael's School and the St. Anthony Home in New Haven from 1941-1946 and St. Raphael School in Bridgeport 1946 to 1948. From there she went to teach at schools in New York, Pennsylvania, Missouri and Illinois returning to teach at St. Raphael School in Bridgeport from 1976-1978 and schools in New York from 1978 until retiring to Sacred Heart Manor in August of 1987.
Sr. Gemma is the sister of Sr. Matilda Lifavi, ASCJ and the late Mary Pascalicchio and Fred Lifavi and the aunt of Jimmy Pascalicchio.
Visiting hours will be Wednesday (TODAY) from 4 to 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Manor, 261 Benham St. in Hamden. Mass of Christian Burial Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in the Manor Chapel. Burial in All Saints Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Manor, 261 Benham St., Hamden, CT 06514.

Sister of Vito Ranalli of Bridgeport, Josephine Cinquanta, Clara Cinquanta, Daniel Ranalli and Frank Ranalli all of Branford, and George Ranalli of East Haven. Also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was born in New Haven March 9, 1936, daughter of the late Venanzio and Sebastiana Almondo Ranalli, and was a communicant of St. Mary Church. She worked in the benefits office for SNET for 39 years until her retirement, and she was a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Guilford, and the SNET Pioneers.
Funeral from the W. S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 504 Main St., Branford Wednesday morning at 9:30 with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary Church at 10:00. Burial in St. Agnes Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday (TODAY) from 4 - 8 PM.

Predeceased by sisters Augusta Campbell, Katherine Graham, Sophie Rubas, and Frances Slivinski, and brother Walter Slivinski. Helen was born in Guilford on September 4, 1913, a daughter of the late Joseph and Katie Wozneck Slivinski. She worked for the Winchester Corporation for many years.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 at St. Agnes Cemetery in Branford. Friends may call prior to the service from 9:30 to 10:30 at the W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 504 Main St. Branford. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Also survived by several nieces & nephews. Predeceased by his sister Louise Lacasse and brothers William W. and Richard Allen. Mr. Allen was born in East Haven on October 31, 1943, a son of the late Lester W. Allen Sr. and Louise Petrolj Allen. He worked for the C.J. Fucci Company in New Haven. He served for four years in the U.S. Navy on the USS Bailey.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday at 10:00 at St. George's Church in Guilford. Friends may call Wednesday from 6-8 P.M. at the W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 504 Main St. Branford. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery in East Haven.

Joseph DeLucca, 77, of Quinnipiac Avenue in New Haven died February 3, 2005 in Connecticut Hospice. He was the beloved husband of Mary Cupo DeLucca. Mr. DeLucca was born in New Haven January 3, 1928 a son of the late Joseph and Mary Capella DeLucca. He worked as a painter with his dad, then for A. Laugeni & Sons and retired from Choate School. Mr. DeLucca was a member of the Father Curtin Council Knights of Columbus. He is the beloved father of Adrienne DeLucca and Mark A. (Marie) DeLucca. Brother of Eleanor Burns, Anthony and James DeLucca and the late Elizabeth DeLucca. Cherished grandfather of Michael and Jennifer DeLucca and Jacqueline and Alexandra Bonneau.
Funeral from the Iovanne Funeral Home, Inc., 11 Wooster Place Monday morning at 8:45. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Therese Church at 9:30. Burial in All Saints Cemetery.
