PAUL - George A. Paul, age 85, of Colchester, formerly of Fairfield, died November 25, 2008 in the CT Hospice, Branford. He was the son of the late William and Julia Paul, whom he loved very much. Mr. Paul was a US Navy Veteran of WWII where he served as a corpsman in the Pacific from 1943 to 1946 and the Korean War from 1951 to 1952. He was a life member of the VFW Oakville Post and the Stratford American Legion. Mr. Paul was a Mason for 50 years and a member of the Ashlar Lodge where he served as Master in 1960. Mr. Paul worked for Loehman Chevrolet, Waterbury, for 36 years, before retiring as sales manager. He was the husband of 50 years to the late Madalen Mary Berard Paul; they resided together in their Davis Rd. home in Fairfield for 40 years. Mr. Paul is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Loretta Berard of Tupper Lake, NY, nine nieces, two nephews and many great nieces and nephews. George was a wonderful uncle and he will be sadly missed by his family. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, November 29, 2008 at 9:15 AM from the Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Ave., Ansonia. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Rocco Florenza in the Anglican Church of the Resurrection, 6 Church St., Ansonia at 10:30 AM. Interment with Military Honors will directly follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Ansonia. Family and friends may call on Saturday from 9:15 AM to 10:15 AM, prior to Mass. Jean Hazel McCormick
McCormick - Jean H. McCormick, age 69, of Ansonia, died September 28, 2008 in Gardner Heights Health Care Center, Shelton after a long and courageous battle with liver cancer. Born in Middleborough, MA on April 17, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Helen Roberts and Harris M. Tucker. She received her LPN license from Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester, Mass. She worked in area nursing homes including United Methodist and Gardner Heights. She spent her life caring for people in need and loved her chosen profession. She was a true nurses nurse.
She is survived by her devoted daughters, Tracy Rego and her husband, John of Hamden, Cheryl McCormick of Cheshire and Susan McCormick of Ansonia; Cherished Grandchildren, Mallory, Chelsea and Benjamin Rego of Hamden and Marissa, Madison and Mikayla Harris of Ansonia. Ms. McCormick is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Donna Mackey and her husband, Butch of MA and Vangie McCormick and her husband, Ronald of New Hampshire who were more like sisters, than sister in laws. She was an avid reader of murder mysteries and loved crime dramas on TV. We all knew not to call on Sundays when her beloved Patriots were on or the Nascar races. She had many passions including, bingo, smoking, seek a word, hamburgers, and getting together with the girls and was extremely proud of her Native American Heritage. Jean could be seen at many Pop Warner games cheering on her granddaughters cheerleading and dance squads. She was so happy to be able to attend her 50th nursing school reunion and to attend a special wedding. We all knew her to be feisty and cantankerous, but we will remember her for her generosity, kind heart and compassion. She will be missed dearly by her family and a very long list of friends. The family would like to thank the staff at Gardner Heights for their compassionate care. A Memorial Service will be held in the Anglican Church of the Resurrection, 6 Church St., Ansonia on Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 4:00 PM. The Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Ave., Ansonia, is in care of arrangements.

Esteve Egbert Aranguren
ARANGUREN - Esteve E. Aranguren, age 88 of Seymour, beloved husband of the late Angela Vitale Aranguren, died September 25, 2008 in Griffin Hospital. Born in New York City on September 14, 1920, he was the son of the late Francis and Dorothy Larsen Aranguren. Mr. Aranguren worked as a truck driver and member of the Teamsters Union, 191 Local and was also employed by Omicron of Trumbull. Together with his wife, they shared many adventures, including owning the 5 Corners Luncheonette and being the Permitee and kitchen operator of the Miamogue Yacht Club, both of Bridgeport. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, 498th Engineer Utilities Co., and member of the Moose Lodge, local 289, Bridgeport. Mr. Aranguren is survived by his children, Rose Docktor and her husband, John of Ansonia, Raymond Lasky and his wife, Trudy of Derby, Monica Lasky of Seymour, Robert Cascella and his wife Val of Milford; 2 stepdaughters and 2 stepsons; grandchildren, Dawn Paul and her husband, Rob, Victoria and Michael Docktor, Nicholas Lasky, Laura and David Brezina, Deborah Simonu, Gray Russo, Sr., and Colleen Hargrove; as well as many step great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Margaret Cascella, a brother Albert Aranguren and three stepchildren. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at 10:00 AM in the Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Ave., Ansonia. Interment with Military Honors will take place in Riverside Cemetery, Shelton. Family and friends may call on Monday, September 29, 2008, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. The family wishes to extend their appreciation to the staff of Marshall Lane Manor for the superior care given to Mr. Aranguren (Poppy) over the past year.

Catherine Boyko Zuraw
ZURAW - Catherine Boyko Zuraw, age 92 of Shelton, beloved wife of the late Samuel G. Zuraw, died August 23, 2008 in the Hewitt Health and Rehab Center, Shelton. Born in Mystic, CT on November 2, 1915, she was the daughter of the late John and Olena Horbal Boyko. Mrs. Zuraw was a lifelong resident of Shelton and member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Ansonia. She was a very compassionate person who did tremendous deeds for many family members throughout her life and her kindness will be greatly missed. Mrs. Zuraw was a dedicated member of the Catholic War Veterans Ladies Auxiliary, Ansonia Post # 1677, where she held many local, state and national offices. She was awarded the CWVs highest national honor, The St. Agnes Award. Catherine was a real fighter, who courageously battled with various types of cancer for over 30 years, always getting herself back on track to enjoy life and focus on her volunteer work. She will be long remembered for her many years of volunteer work at the West Haven and Rocky Hill VA Hospitals. Mrs. Zuraw is survived by her devoted sons, Robert G. Zuraw and his wife, Sandra of Shelton and Richard J. Zuraw of Clinton; a sister, Elizabeth Boyko of Newington; cherished grandchildren, Alexis Lynn Cornut and her husband, Shawn of Monroe, and Lucas John Zuraw of Shelton; great-grandchildren, Samantha Mary and Shawn William Cornut, Jr. of Monroe; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Michael Boyko; and sisters, Mary Coons, Anne Masline, Helen Astriab, Julie Mica, and Barbara Boyko. Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at 9:15 AM from the Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Avenue, Ansonia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM in Sts. Peter and Paul Church, 105 Clifton Avenue, Ansonia. Interment will be in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Derby. John E. Svehlak
SVEHLAK - John E. Svehlak, age 74, beloved husband of Olga Popowchak Svehlak of Oxford, died December 20, 2008 in the West Haven VA Medical Center. Born in Derby on June 19, 1934, he was the son of the late John J. and Genevieve Plsek Svehlak. Mr. Svehlak was a US Army Veteran of the Korean War and Graduate of Bullard Havens High School and the Bridgeport Engineering School. He worked as a self employed carpenter in the building and remodeling business for many years until his retirement. Mr. Svehlak served as Chief of the Oxford Center Fire Dept. and was a committee member of the new firehouse building committee. He was the Town of Oxford, Burning Official, member of the Building Code Board of Appeals, and Clerk of Works, for the Oxford Senior Center Building. He was a longtime Communicant of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Seymour, as well as its men's club and member of the David S. Miles Post #174, Oxford, American Legion and the St. Michael's CWV Post 1562, Derby. In addition to his wife of 46 years, he is survived by his devoted children, John S. Svehlak and his wife, Karin of Seymour, Dr. Stephen A. Svehlak of Los Angeles, CA, Daniel J. Svehlak and Cynthia A, Svehlak, both of Oxford; sister, Mildred Higgins and her husband, Connie of WV, a brother Henry Svehlak and his wife Suzie of TX and a cherished grandson, John S. Svehlak of Seymour, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Genevieve "Sonia" Schenck. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, December 27, 2008 at 9:15 AM from the Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Ave., Ansonia. Andrew Bendlak
Bendlak - Andrew Bendlak, Jr., age 61 of Bridgeport, died suddenly in his home on December 5, 2008. Born on May 1, 1947, he was the son of the late Andrew Bendlak Sr. and Antoinette Quintiliano Bendlak. Mr. Bendlak was a life long Bridgeport resident and worked as an antique furniture refinisher. He is survived by his daughter, Brenda Pensanti of Bridgeport; his sisters and brother, Christine Tibor and her husband, Louis of Stratford, Rachel Skrtic and her husband, Ivan of Shelton, Donna Fedumenti of Shelton, Kathy Bendlak of Bridgeport, Desarae Bonaldo of Bridgeport, Michael Bendlak of Trumbull and Patricia McCarthy and her husband Jerry of Shelton. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, as well as dear friends, Gary, Irene and Nathan Piccirillo. Funeral services are private. Private Timothy Walter Koundry, Jr.
KOUNDRY, JR. - Private Timothy W. Koundry, Jr., age 22 of Ansonia, beloved son of Barbara Wargo of Ansonia, died February 28, 2010 at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina. Born in Bridgeport on February 4, 1988, he was a 2007 Graduate of Ansonia High School and played baseball, football and basketball for Ansonia. He enjoyed paintball, fishing, skateboarding, & civil war reenactment as well as spending time with his family and friends. Private Koundry, Jr. Graduated from USMC Basic Training, Parris Island, South Carolina in July of 2008, achieving his life long dream of becoming a United States Marine. He was loved by ALL and will be sadly missed by ALL; he will always hold a special place in our lives. In addition to his mother he is survived by his brother and sisters, Jonathan C. Wargo of Ansonia, Ashley A. Koundry of Ansonia, and Molly Koundry of Oxford; his maternal grandparents, Raymond and Katherine Toothill Wargo of Bridgeport; Aunts, Sharon Rodko, Donna Wargo; Uncle, Edward Rodko and cousins Amber, Ryan, Caitlin and Megan. Private Koundry is also survived by his father Timothy W. Koundry Sr. and several aunts, uncles and cousins. At the request of the family, funeral arrangements will be private. Samuel Walczuk
WALCZUK - Samuel "George" Walczuk, age 78 of Beacon Falls, formerly a longtime resident of Stamford, died February 24, 2010 in his home following a sudden illness. Born in Stamford on May 30, 1931, he was the son of the late Panko and Mary Cherkowsky Walczuk. Mr. Walczuk was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War and worked as a self employed upholsterer and drape maker for many years until his retirement. His professional window treatments and upholstery decorated many fine homes and businesses across Westchester and Fairfield Counties. He was a fan of big band music, frequently listened to classic jazz and enjoyed cooking. He is survived by his beloved brother with whom he resided, Paul Walczuk of Beacon Falls; a devoted niece, Cheryl Tritto and her husband, Frank of Bridgeport; devoted nephews, Ronald Walczuk and wife Farrah of Norwalk, Robert Walczuk and his wife, Donna of CA, and John Walczuk and his wife Kathy of KS; as well as several great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Harry and William Walzcuk and sisters, Eleanor Walczuk and Anne Bawlick. Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at 9:00 AM from the Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Avenue, Ansonia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Sts. Major T. Humphrey
HUMPHREY - Major Thomas Humphrey, Jr., age 78, beloved husband of Barbara J. Boockholdt Humphrey of Derby, died February 9, 2010 at Yale New Haven Hospital. Born in Smyrna, GA on December 22, 1931, he was the son of the late Major T. and Bertha Mae Fawcett Humphrey, Sr. Mr. Humphrey was a US Navy Veteran of the Korean War and graduated from Georgia Tech 1961 where he was a founding brother of the Delta Epsilon Fraternity. Following his lifelong passion for aviation, he applied his extraordinary IQ by working in many industrial engineering positions across the United States, including 18 years for Martin-Marietta on the F-16 fighter jet project and lastly, 10 years for Sikorsky Aircraft. He enjoyed fly fishing as well as teaching others the sport and excelled in bowling. He will be long remembered for his honesty and integrity by all who knew him. In addition to his beloved wife of nearly 50 years, he is survived by his devoted children, Donna Vieira and her husband, Richard of FL, Debra Anne Humphrey of Derby, and Christina Powers and her husband, David of FL; a sister, Anne Humphrey Helton of GA; nine cherished grandchildren and a great granddaughter. He was predeceased by a son, Thomas Charles Humphrey, two brothers and three sisters. A Memorial Service will take place on Sunday, February 14, 2010 at 3:00PM in the Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Avenue, Ansonia. Jennie A. Fama
FAMA - Jennie A. Fama, age 80, beloved wife of Salvatore J. Fama of Ansonia, died March 3, 2010 in the comfort of her home with her family by her side. Born in Torrington on July 25, 1929, she was the daughter of the late John and Louise Dassan. Mrs. Fama was a longtime Ansonia resident, homemaker and Communicant of the Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel, Monroe. In addition to her husband of 47 years, she is survived by her devoted children, Michael J. Fama and his wife, Nancy of Northford and Therese M. Kusterer and her husband, Ron of Seymour; a sister, Margaret Sawoska of Torrington; cherished grandchildren, Louis Peccerillo, Matthew, Michael and Jenna Fama; Robert, Thomas, Clarice, Jennie, Gustav, Faith, Sarah, and Emily Kusterer. Mrs. Fama was predeceased by a brother, Louis Dassan and sisters, Adeline Ross and Josephine Dassan. Joseph M. Preston
PRESTON - Joseph M. Preston, age 87, beloved husband of Marion Woolley Preston of Port St. Lucie, FL, died peacefully in his home, surrounded by family on October 13, 2010. Born in Brooklyn, NY on October 19, 1922, he was the son of the late Joseph and Edith Smith Preston. Mr. Preston was a proud U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and member of the VFW. He was a longtime resident of Monroe before moving to Stuart, FL, 20 years ago. Mr. Preston was the Parts Manager for O'Keefe Cadillac for over 20 years, prior to his retirement. He was an avid sportsman participating in various bowling leagues, but his passion was baseball. Nearly playing professional baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers in his younger years, he kept his dream alive by becoming a founding member of Monroe Little League and a long time coach. He had a great fondness for music and was a drummer in his earlier years. Mr. Preston served the Monroe community as an Aux. Police Officer and was active with many automotive associations affiliated with General Motors. In addition to his wife of 24 years, he is survived by his children, Michael (Ann) Preston of Sandy Hook, CT, Patricia (Vincent) Stapleton of Stratford, CT, Ann Marie Preston of TX; stepchildren, Laura (Walter) VanWallendael of Hobe Sound, FL, Richard (Kim) Wilson and William (Mary) Wilson, all of L.I., N.Y.; sister, Ann (William) Anziano of Stamford, CT; 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Eleanor Boroczky Preston; sons, Richard and Joseph Preston; and a sister, Josephine Preston. Funeral services will take place on Monday, October 18, 2010 at 11:00 AM in the Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Ave., Ansonia, CT. Stephanie Lydia Weinberg
Weinberg - Stephanie Lydia Weinberg, age 75, beloved wife of Howard Weinberg of Oxford, CT, passed away on August 14, 2010 at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven after a long illness. She was born in Berlin, New Hampshire on April 5, 1935 and was the daughter of the late Jacob and Parasceva Koliada. Mrs. Weinberg was an Employee at Sikorsky Aircraft of Stratford and also worked at Hamilton Standard in Shelton, where she retired in 1987. She was a devout member of the St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church of Stratford and truly enjoyed spending time with her granddaughter Lydia. Mrs. Weinberg is survived by her devoted children, David of Cheshire, Mark and wife Nancy of Cape Coral, FL and Craig of Thomaston; as well as three cherished grandchildren, Jacob, Natasha and Lydia; and many nieces and nephews. Emily C. Cavallaro
CAVALLARO - Emily C. Cavallaro, age 84 of Derby, died September 4, 2010 in Griffin Hospital with her family by her side. Born in Ansonia on January 23, 1926, she was the daughter of the late John and Anna Palfi German. Mrs. Cavallaro was a lifelong valley resident and worked as an employee for the Roberk Co, of Shelton, Dunkin Donuts of Ansonia, Howard Johnson Hotel of Milford and a teacher's aide in the Amity School District. She will be long remembered for her love of family and caring for her home. She is survived by her devoted children, Michael Cavallaro and his wife Allison of Shelton, Anna Cavallaro of Derby and Carmella Cybart of Ansonia; sisters, Theresa Pinchuk of Shelton and Patricia Merkowitz of FL; a brother, James German of Ansonia; a sister-in-law, Mary Ann German of Derby; eight cherished grandchildren and seventeen cherished great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael H. Cavallaro; sons, Richard and Peter Cavallaro and a son-in-law, Andrew Cybart. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at 8:15AM from the Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Ave., Ansonia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:00AM in Holy Rosary Church, Father Salemi Dr., Ansonia. Interment will follow in Mt. St. Peter Cemetery, Derby. Alfred G. Borkowski
BORKOWSKI - Alfred G. Borkowski, age 82, beloved husband of Frances Kort Borkowski of Ansonia, died peacefully in his home on September 8, 2010. Born in Ansonia on February 22, 1928, he was the son of the late John and Alexandria Borkowski. Mr. Borkowski was a lifelong resident of Ansonia and communicant of St. Joseph's Church. He was a graduate of Pine High School and U.S. Coast Guard Veteran. Mr. Borkowski was the owner and operator of the K & B Service Station, formerly located on Main St., Ansonia, for 35 years until his retirement in 1990. Mr. Borkowski was a member of the Derby Catholic War Veterans and an avid golfer. In addition to his wife of 53 years, he is survived by his devoted sons, Kenneth Burke and his wife, Patricia of North Branford, Robert Burke and his wife, Karen of North Haven, and Gregg Burke and his wife, Donna of Shelton; sisters, Adele Hassler and her husband, Paul of Seymour and Henrietta Gumbrewicz of Oxford; cherished grandchildren, Nicole and John, Sydney and Madison, and Megan and Ryan; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Helen and Genevieve Borkowski, Ceil Drzewi and brothers, Edward and Thomas "Manny" Borkowski. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 11, 2010, at 11:00 AM in St. Joseph's Church, 32 Jewett St., Ansonia. Eleanor G. Palumbo
PALUMBO - Eleanor G. Palumbo, age 83, of Derby, formerly of Norwalk, died peacefully on October 20, 2010 at Griffin Hospital, Derby. Born in Louisburg, NC on January 25, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Louella Perry. Mrs. Palumbo was a dedicated mother, grandmother and resident of Norwalk for aprox. 40 years, before moving to Derby 7 years ago. She is survived by her devoted daughters, Jean Bardos of Norwalk and Linda Florenza and her husband Bishop Rocco Florenza of Ansonia; sister, Lula Champion of GA and brother, Claude Perry of MS; 4 cherished grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by 11 brothers and sisters. Private graveside services were held in the Norwalk Union Cemetery, Norwalk. A Memorial Service will take place on November 6, 2010 at 11:00 AM in the Cathedral Church of the Resurrection, 6 Church St., Ansonia. The Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Ave., Ansonia, is in care of Arrangements.

Shirley Esther Drake
DRAKE - Shirley Esther Drake, age 74, beloved wife of Paul Drake of NC, formerly of Oxford, died peacefully September 21, 2010 at the North East Medical Center, Concord, NC with her family by her side. Born in Ansonia on November 24, 1935, she was the daughter of the late John and Lena Natowich Brushitis. Mrs. Drake was a lifelong member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church, a 1953 graduate of Ansonia High School, and a 38 year resident of Oxford, before moving to North Carolina 5 years ago. While in North Carolina she belonged to a knitting club where she fashioned shawls for hospice patients. In addition to her husband of 53 years, she is survived by her devoted son, Paul K. Drake and his wife, Elaine of Harrisburg, NC; sisters, Jeanette Metelski of Ansonia, Rita Marcheletto of Southbury, and brother, John M. Brushitis and his wife, Shirley of Seymour; cherished grandchildren, Justin and Kyle Drake of NC; as well as several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will take place from the Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Ave., Ansonia, on Tuesday, September, 28, 2010 at 9:15 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Sts. Peter and Paul Church, 105 Clifton Ave., Ansonia, at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Derby. Family and friends may call on Monday, September 27, 2010, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, Parastas Service will be held at 6:30 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sts. Peter & Paul Preservation Fund.
