SURATO, EDWARD F.
February 20, 2008
Edward French Surato, 77, of 163 Ocean View St., Morris Cove, New Haven, passed away Feb. 20, 2008. Mr. Surato was born in Woodbridge on March 28, 1930, son of the late Edward and Fedora Porier Surato. He was educated in New Haven Public Schools where he attended Davis St. School, Sheridan Jr. High and Hillhouse High School, Class of 1948. He graduated from Ohio School of Trades in Columbus and Merchant Marine Academy, St. Petersburg, FL. He served in the Merchant Marine, the Navy Reserve and Coast Guard Auxiliary. After World War II, he served as a sergeant in the US Air Force, stationed with the Army of Occupation in Landstule, Germany. He worked as a gun assembler for Winchester Repeating Arms. A member of Operating Engineers Local 478, he worked for Anthony Julian and C.W. Blakeslee construction companies. He was maintenance supervisor for International Instruments and West Haven Shipyard and was the superintendent at the Doctor’s Building, 2 Church St. South for 18 years prior to retirement. He was a member of D.A.V., V.F.W. and was a Life Member of City Point Yacht Club. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Catherine Arnold Kirkwood; 2 sons, Edward John Surato of New Haven & Philip (Janice) Surato of Cheshire; 2 daughters, Suzanne (John) Smith of West Haven & Darlene Surato of Wallingford; 1 sister, Fedora (Gordon) Surato MacKensie Loth of Surprise, AZ.; 5 grandchildren, Courtney & Christopher Smith, Eric, Jack & Sophia Lauren Surato. Also survived by his first wife, Delores Forcinelli Surato of New Haven. Predeceased by his aunt, Theresa Suarato Torcellini. He will be mourned by his constant companion, Laurence Feline Kirkwood.
Friends may call at The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight), New Haven Wednesday from 4 to 7 PM and are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Bernadette’s Church Thursday, March 6th at 10:00 AM. Private interment will take place at a later date.

TAMMARO, ANTHONY
February 17, 2008
Anthony Tammaro, 83, of 825 Whiporwill Drive, Port Orange, FL. passed away Feb. 17, 2008 in Halifax Hospital, Port Orange. He was the husband of the late Mary Ann Connolly Tammaro and was a former resident of 51 Mead St., New Haven. Mr. Tammaro was born in Cusano Mutri, Province of Benevento, Italy on April 25, 1924, son of the late Luciano and Giovannina Petrillo Tammaro. He came to this country at the age of 12. He worked as a machinist for Pratt Whitney Aircraft until his retirement 20 years ago. Prior to that, he worked as a short order cook in several area restaurants. He also was a cook while serving in the US Army during World War II. He is survived by a son, Anthony W. Tammaro of Port Orange, FL.; a brother, Luciano (Rosemarie)Tammaro Jr. of Orange; and several nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Gabriel Tammaro. Funeral from The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight), New Haven Friday morning at 9:15. Mass in St. Louis Church, West Haven at 10:00. Friends may call Thursday (TODAY) from 5 to 8 PM. VERDERAME, SALVATORE
February 16, 2008
Salvatore J. “Red” Verderame, 81, well known basketball coach and school administrator, passed away Feb. 16, 2008 in CT Hospice, Branford, after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Ann Frattini Verderame. Born in New Haven Sept. 3, 1926, he was the son of the late Salvatore & Mary G. Morico Verderame. After coaching at Quinnipiac College for 2 years from 1951 to 1953, he became the basketball coach at Wilbur Cross High School in New Haven from 1953 to 1966, compiling a record of 254 wins and only 35 losses. His teams won 5 consecutive District League Championships; 4 consecutive State championships and 2 New England High School Tournament championships. He served as Vice-Principal at Hillhouse High School from 1969 to 1984 and Principal from 1984 to 1990. He undertook many foreign coaching assignments as a foreign service officer with the U.S. Dept. of State between 1963 and 1983, including Africa and the Middle East. His love for Africa inspired him to establish The International Ambassadors For Education program which enabled high school students the opportunity to travel the continent. He was also active in the Special Olympics International Committee. He was awarded the Gold Key by the Conn. Sports Writers Alliance in 1981; was Carmine Criscuolo “Man of the Year” in 1986 and was elected to the CT High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 1987; New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003 and Wilbur Cross High School Hall of Fame in 2005. He was also the author of several books relating to basketball and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He was an avid fisherman who loved spending time with his family & friends. Besides his wife, he is survived by 2 sons, Jeffrey P., and his wife, Sherree Verderame of Branford and Randall, and his wife, Dianne Verderame of Westbrook; a daughter, Jody Ford of Killingworth; a brother, Carl Verderame of Glastonbury; a sister, Catherine Volpe of Hamden; and 5 grandchildren, Taylor, Sara, Cody, Hannah & Luke. He was predeceased by 2 brothers, Pat & John Verderame and a sister, Marie (Louis) Fronte.
Friends may call at The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight) New Haven, Tuesday from 4 to 8 PM and are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary’s Church, Branford, Wednesday morning at 10:00 AM. Interment in All Saints Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in “Red’s” name to The Connecticut Hospice, 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT 06405.

THOMPSON, FANNY
February 10, 2008
Fanny Thompson, 97, of 22 St. Mary St., Hamden, passed away Feb. 10, 2008 in Yale New Haven Hospital. Born in Dominica, West Indies on Jan. 5, 1911, she was the daughter of the late William & Eugie Moise Thompson. She is survived by a son, Anthony F. (Theodora) Joseph of Hamden; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer (Patrick) Dontfraid, Joanna Joseph, Dorothy Joseph & Family, Francis (Linda) Joseph & Family, Raphael Joseph & Family, Leonard Joseph & Family, Donald (Judy) Joseph & Family, Raymond Joseph & Family, Geraldine (Francis) Phillip & Family; Denise (Joel) Joseph & Family & Gerard (Tammy) Joseph & Family; 31 great grandchildren, including Elizabeth, Daniel, Sharon, Cherian, Caryl & Michael Dontfraid and Shermain Cooke-Edmonds & Deborah Cooke; and 20 great great grandchildren, including Mitchell Pascal, Miy’chelle & Michael Donfraid, Jade Pouncey, Shenell & Deonne Edmonds. She was predeceased by a grand daughter in law, Marlene Joseph and one great grandson.
Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Martin dePorres Church, 136 Dixwell Ave., New Haven Saturday, March 1st at 10:00 AM. Viewing prior to the Mass from 9 to 10 AM. Interment in St. Lawrence Cemetery. The Celentano Funeral Home is handling funeral arrangements.

LAGGIS, KATHERINE
February 8, 2008
Katherine Tartanis Laggis, 83, formerly of East Haven, passed away Feb. 8, 2008 in Harborside Willows of Woodbridge. She was the wife of the late George Laggis. Mrs. Laggis was born in Danbury Sept. 16, 1924, daughter of the late George & Ourania Karakalpakis Tartanis. She worked as a sales manager at Macy’s in New Haven prior to her retirement. She is survived by a son, Nicholas G. Laggis of East Haven; a daughter, Renee K. Del Percio and son in law, Atty. Fred Del Percio of Orange; a sister, Pauline Fanolis of East Haven; 2 sisters in law, Helen Tartanis of Vero Beach, FL. & Georgia Laggis Glinos of East Haven; as well as special nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and dear friends. She was predeceased by a brother, Constantinos (Gus) Tartanis.

SCILIPOTE, JENNIE

Jennie (Terry) Ruggiero Soli Scilipote, 82, formerly of West Walk, West Haven, died Feb. 5, 2008 in Harborside Arden House, Hamden. She was the wife of the late James (Jack) Scilipote. Born in New Haven Sept. 8, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Giovanni & Anna Manzo Ruggiero. She is survived by a son, Joseph (Carolyn) Soli of Highland, CA.; 2 sisters, Jean (Joseph) Poletta of South Carolina and Vivian Masselli of Orange; 2 granddaughters, Danielle Soli of New Haven & Michele (Sean) O’Brien of Woodbridge; 5 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews & cousins. She was predeceased by her grandson, Joseph Soli Jr.

She was born in New Haven April 25, 1911, daughter of the late Anthony and Mary Goldupes.

Father of Anthony R. Acunzo and Suzanne DeAngelo-Cheeseman, both of Branford. Brother of Carolyn Chiocchio of Branford. Grandfather of Michelle Acunzo of Branford, Anthony C. Acunzo of Hamden, Meridith DeAngelo of North Haven, and Jamie DeAngelo of Branford. Also survived by a great-grandson, Antonio Joseph Pinette. Pre-deceased by brothers Joseph and Frank Acunzo.
He was born May 31, 1915 in New Haven, son of the late Ralph and Adeleine DiAndrea Acunzo. He was a retired welder, working at Plasticrete in North Haven for 28 years. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Union, and was an amateur artist working with acrylics. He was an avid walker who enjoyed walking in Foote Park in Branford.

A funeral service will be held Monday morning at 11:00 in the First Presbyterian Church of Whitestone, 15-43 149th St., Whitestone, NY. Friends may call prior to the funeral from 10:30 - 11:00 at church. Entombment in Pinelawn Mausoleum, Pinelawn, NY.
