David Ganun Ryder

David Ganun Ryder, age 90, of Gouverneur, NY, died Thursday, August 7, 2003 in Gouverneur, NY.
Mr. Ryder was born November 13, 1912 in Croton Falls, NY to Ernest and Jennie (Ganun) Ryder. He graduated from Syracuse University’s School of Forestry in Wanakena, NY in 1936, where he received a bachelor’s in engineering.
Mr. Ryder married Katherine Bethel in 1935 at the chapel at Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY. Mrs. Ryder died in 1991.
Mr. Ryder was owner and operator of Ryder’s Skyport in Gouverneur for over 45 years, retiring in 1982. He was also a mining engineer surveyor. Mr. Ryder was an avid pilot and enjoyed both flying and his family. He had lived in the Gouverneur area for over 60 years, having lived in Croton Falls, NY prior.
Mr. Ryder is survived by four sons, Gerome Ferris, John William, David George, and Brian Bradley; a daughter, Annette Elizabeth; 15 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, August 12, 2003 10 a.m. at the family homestead at Ryder Farm, Starr Ridge Road, Brewster, NY. Interment following at Ivandell Cemetery, Somers, NY. Friends may call at the family homestead at Ryder Farm, Starr Ridge Road, on Monday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Myra W. Gordon

Myra W., Gordon, formerly of Danbury, died on Sunday, June 1, 2003, in North Woods Village, Kokomo, Ind., at the age of 88. She had been in declining health for five years.
Mrs. Gordon was born May 30, 1915, in New Milford, daughter of Myron Cole and Elizabeth (Shelley) Whitlock. She had been a resident of Conn. for over 60 years, having graduated from Danbury High School in 1934. She was a secretary, homemaker and volunteered at Danbury Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital, in Kokomo, and at Venis Hospital, in Fla. She was a member of the Theta Iota Sorority and a member of the First Presbyterian Church, in Kokomo. Mrs. Gordon had lived in the Burlington community for 10 years. She loved life, youth activities, music and her cat. She had a beautiful spirit, never complained, always has a smile and sense of humor. Mrs. Gordon is predeceased by her husband, Alexander Hendrickson Gordon, who died in 1983 and a brother, Shelley Whitlock.
Mrs. Gordon is survived by one daughter, Shelley and son- in-law, William O. Jones, of Bringhurst, Ind.; two sons, Paul A. Gordon, of Putney, Vt.; and David W. Gordon, of New Milford; two grandchildren, Andrea J. Squibb and her husband Joel, of Sharpsville, Ind.; Allen N. Jones and his wife Michelle, of Cutler, Ind.; and three great grandchildren, Tyler and Jessica Squibb and Paige Jones.
Friends may call at the Neptune Funeral Home, 44 Michigan Road, Burlington, on Wednesday, from 4 to 8 p.m. Services will be held Thursday, 11 a.m., at the funeral home, with the reverend Ron Elly officiating. Burial will take place at Woodbury Cemetery, in Woodbury, Conn., at the convenience of the family.

Esther McKeowan Conant

Esther McKeowan Conant of Brookfield, died peacefully in her sleep early Monday, May 26, 2003. She is the widow of Dr. Ralph E. Conant.
Mrs. Conant was born on the farm at Black Horse Hill, in Coatesville Pa., October 11, 1905, a daughter of the late William J. and Alice (Hulton) McKeowan. After high school she attended Southern Seminary for Women in Va., and later obtained a teaching certificate from West Chester State Teachers College, in West Chester Pa. Mrs. Conant taught school until her marriage in July 1935.
During Dr. Conant’s years as an army surgeon, the couple lived in a number of interesting places including; Ft. Slocumn, N.Y.; Okinawa and the Panama Canal Zone. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Conant maintained her love for travel, often in the company of her sister Alice Park. She was a prolific artist for a number of years, enjoyed entertaining and was a generous contributor to a number of worthy causes.
Mrs. Conant is survived by a niece, Louise Park Lockhart of Las Cruces, N.M.; two great nephews; William Sheraton Lockhart and Roy McKeowan Lockhart, both of El Paso Texas . She is predeceased by her sister Alice M. Park and two brothers, William and Hulton McKeowan.
A Memorial Service will be held in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Brookfield, Saturday, June 21, at 3 p.m.

Nicholas S. Tamburri

Nicholas S. Tamburri, age 93, of Danbury, died Monday, June 2, 2003, at Mediplex Health Care Center. He is the husband of Helen (Johnson) Tamburri.
He was born in Stamford, June 1, 1910, son of the late Anunziato and Concetta Tamburri.
Mr. Tamburri was an accountant / restaurateur all of his adult life. He established the Yankee Drover Inn, in Newtown, in February of 1952. During the 1950s-60s, 70s and 80s, along with his two brothers, William and Gene Tamburri, both now deceased, they founded The Early American Inns Co., operating The Yankee Pedlar Inn of Holyoke Mass.; The Yankee Silversmith Inn of Wallingford; The Yankee Coachman Inn of Stamford; The Yankee Drummer Inn of the Massachusetts Turnpike; and The Tobacco Valley Inn of Windsor.
During the 1960s, Mr. Tamburri also owned and operated The General Putnam Inn of Norwalk and The Steak Barn of Ridgefield. The Yankee Pedlar and The Yankee Drover became prototypes in the 1960s, for today’s changing tastes in fine dining. The Early American Inns Co. became key supporters of the Culinary Institute of America, helping many students of the institute reach their goals in life.
Nicholas Tamburri will be remembered as a manager and employer, who demanded skill and perfection from his team of people, in all of his operations, to thus enhance the “dining experience” of his customers.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son Robert Tamburri, of Danbury; a daughter Judith Larson, of Brookfield; five grandchildren, six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his grandson, William P. Tamburri.
Private funeral services and burial in Saint John Cemetery, will take place at the direction of the family. There are no calling hours

Donald W. Lawrence

Donald Wells Lawrence, 74, of 7 Budd Drive, Bethel, died Monday morning, June 2, 2003, after being stricken ill at his home. He was the husband of the late Anne Carpenter Lawrence, his wife of 51 years.
Mr. Lawrence was born in Newfane, Vt., and grew up in Stamford. He attended King School, and graduated from the Wooster School in Danbury, in 1947. He was employed by the Bartlett Tree Co. before becoming an agent for American Airlines, at the former Bridgeport Airport. He owned the Rowlison Travel Agency in Norwalk for twenty years, prior to his retirement. Mr. Lawrence had a great love for travel and music. He was also an avid sports fan, and enjoyed his many summers on Cape Cod.
He is survived by a daughter, Susan L. Monack and her husband Donald, of Milton, Mass.; a son Jeffery E. Lawrence and his wife Cindy, of Bethel; his grandchildren, Julia and Gregory Monack, Danielle Legnard, Jeremy and Bennett Lawrence, his great grandson, Kevin Legnard, his sister, Marjorie L. Weidig, of Orleans, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 11, at 11 a.m., at the First Congregational Church of Bethel, Main St., Bethel.

Erland Levine

Erland Levine, age 91, of New Milford, formerly of Fairfield, died Monday, June 2, 2003 at his residence. Mr. Levine was born in Sweden, and was an area resident most of his life.
He was the retired owner of J & L Manufacturing Company. He was a member of St. John’s Lodge, A.F. & A.M., the Royal Order of Jesters, the Pyramid Shriners, and member and past president of A.U.S.S. and the Scandinavian Club of Fairfield.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Fisher Levine of New Milford; two daughters, Kay McDonagh and Susan Levine, both of New Milford; two brothers, Gus Levine of Fairfield and Knute Levine of Rockford, Ill.; six grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Lois Levine.
Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Saturday, June 7, at 10 a.m., in the Scandinavian Club, South Pine Creek Road, Fairfield. Burial will be private, at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.

Susan P. (Hawley) Spiller, age 50, wife of Gary E. Spiller, Sr., of Bedias, Texas , died Friday, May 30, 2003
Mrs. Spiller was born in Mount Kisco, N.Y., August 31, 1952, a daughter of the late Edgar and Ethel (Raymond) Hawley. She was raised in Newtown and was a graduate of Newtown High School, Class of 1970. She formerly lived in Oklahoma.
In addition to her husband of 32 years, Mrs. Spiller is survived by two sons, Gary E. Spiller, Jr. and his wife Mary, of Bedias, Texas ; Jason Spiller and his wife Carole, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; a daughter, Cheryl Spiller, of Bedias; three sisters, Barbara Bradley and her husband Jerrod, of Newtown; Carol Mitchell and her husband Floyd, of Southbury; and Jane Eckert and her husband Les, of Newtown; a brother, Christopher Raymond and his wife Gail, of Pittsfield, Mass.; five grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Honan Funeral Home, Wednesday, June 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 12, 10 a.m., at the funeral home. Interment will take place in Newtown Village Cemetery.

William E. LaVigne

William E. LaVigne, formerly of Grassy Plain St., Bethel, husband of the late Mildred M. (Schork) LaVigne, died on Wednesday, June 4th, at Bridgeport Manor, at the age of 75. Mr. LaVigne was born in Hartford on February 7, 1928, son of the late Ernest and Lillian (Norman) LaVigne.
He made his home in the Bethel Community for 38 years. Mr. LaVigne was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving with the United States Army. He retired in 1992 as a Production Foreman at Republic Foil, where he was employed for 32 years. He was a parishioner of St. Mary Church in Bethel.
Mr. LaVigne is survived by his son, James LaVigne, of Waterbury; two daughters, Madeline and her husband Kenneth Burdick, of Danbury; Beverly and her husband Gordon Thompson, of Brookfield. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Kenneth Burdick, Jr., James and Tyler LaVigne, Heather Evanuska and Linnea LaVigne.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 6, at 10 a.m., at St. Mary Church, Bethel, with burial to follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury.

Albert H. Hornig

Albert H. Hornig of Crows Nest Lane, Danbury, devoted husband of Lorraine (Langan) Lundquist Hornig, died on Tuesday, June 3rd at the Danbury Hospital. He was born on April 9, 1928 in Jersey City, New Jersey, son of the late Joseph and Esther (Bresev) Hornig.
Mr. Hornig was raised in Danbury and was a graduate of Danbury High School, Class of 1945. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving with the United States Army, and was awarded the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, the U.N. Service Medal and the National Defense Medal.
Mr. Hornig was a graduate of New York University and New York University School of Law. He was admitted into the Connecticut Bar Association in 1951, and practiced law in Danbury for more than 42 years. He was a judge at the City Court of Danbury at the age of 28, the youngest judge appointed at that time.
He was very active in the Jewish community, served as president of United Jewish Center and president of the Jewish Federation. He was a member of the Danbury Library Board of Directors, served as trustee of the Scott Fanton Museum in Danbury and was active in the Democratic Party.
Besides his loving wife, Lorraine, he will be missed by his daughter, Claire and her husband Gregory Fennessy of Wilton; his son-in-law, Todd Buttrick of Madison; and four grandchildren, Joshua and Sarah Fennessy of Wilton and Alyssa and Jenna Buttrick of Madison. He is also survived by a sister, Sheila and her husband, Malcom Gardner of Hailey, Idaho. He was predeceased by his daughter, Jill Buttrick in 2002.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 5th at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St., Danbury, at 10 a.m. Rabbi Brad Boxman of the United Jewish Center will officiate. Burial will follow in Miry Brook Cemetery, Danbury. Friends may call on Wednesday, June 4th between the hours of 5 and 8 p.m. at the Cornell Memorial Home.

Emma-Gene S. Howes

Emma-Gene S. Howes, 85, of Danbury, wife of the late Theodore Howes Sr., died Monday, June 2, 2003 at Danbury Hospital.
Emma-Gene was born in Danbury on July 27, 1917, daughter of the late Carl A.F. Stolle and Susan (Lunn) Stolle. She was raised in Ridgefield.
She was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church for 32 years, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. After graduating from Danbury Teachers College, she taught school until her marriage to Theodore Howes, to whom she was married for 48 years.
When Mr. Howes began the Ted Howes Nursery of Danbury, Emma-Gene served as his “right-hand girl” for many years. After working at the nursery, Mrs. Howes became a substitute school teacher in the Danbury school system for 22 years.
Throughout her career Mrs. Howes held various positions in several organizations, including Charter Chapter of St. James Episcopal Church of Danbury and the American Association of University Women. She was also a volunteer for the American Red Cross and spent time as a den mother for the Cub Scouts. Mrs. Howes delighted in being “on the go” and traveled in the United States, Caribbean, Europe, Mexico and Egypt.
However, late in her life she had to settle for becoming a “puzzle whiz”. Emma-Gene also delighted in the beauty of nature and took quiet pleasure in her small patch of wildflowers. Everyone who knew Emma-Gene Howes liked her.
Mrs. Howes is survived by her daughter, Judith Howes, and two sons, Theodore Howes Jr. and William Carl Howes, all of Danbury; two sisters, Margaret Boyd of Bethel and Susan Abbott of Wilton and Florida; as well as several nieces and nephews, located throughout the country.
Graveside services will be held at Maple Shade Cemetery, Ridgefield, on Saturday, at 12:30 p.m., with the Rev. Dr. Richard Gilchrist officiating.
Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

Joycelyn Quinn Thomas

Joycelyn (Quinn) Thomas, 74 of Ridgefield, wife of the late August J. Thomas, Sr., died on Monday morning, June 2, 2003 at the Danbury Hospital.
Mrs. Thomas was born in New Orleans, LA, October 25, 1928, a daughter of the late Arthur H. and Caroline (Gardere) Quinn. She attended schools in New Orleans.
A resident of Ridgefield since 1967 coming from San Francisco, CA, Mrs. Thomas was a member of the former Ridgefield Women’s Bowling League, a member of the Ridgefield Senior Center, a volunteer with the Meals on Wheels program and a member of St. Mary’s Church.
She was an avid bridge player and line dancer.
She is survived by two sons, Tom and his wife, Laurie, of Ridgefield and Kenny and his wife, Karen, of Atlanta, GA; a daughter, Jude Thomas Wentz of Norwalk; a sister, Iris Quinn Cooley of New Orleans; seven grandchildren, Lauren, Casey, Ashley, Kenny, Joseph, Henry and Max; and a great-grandson, Finn.
A son, Wayne E. Thomas predeceased her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Ridgefield.
Interment will be private.

Mary Y. Sergi

Mary Y. Sergi, age 85, formerly of Shelter Rock Rd., Danbury and Bethel, died Monday, June 2, 2003, at Candlewood Valley Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Ralph A. Sergi.
She was born in Bronx, N.Y., March 21, 1918, daughter of the late Vito and Catherine (Pepe) Scandiffio. She was employed as a seamstress in the garment district, in New York City, while residing in the Bronx. In 1956, she and her husband moved to Bethel and she was employed as a quality control inspector for Amphenol Corp., of Danbury. Mr. and Mrs. Sergi were married in October of 1941.
She is survived by her son, Ralph C. Sergi and his wife Mary L., of Danbury; a brother, Nicholas Scandiffio, of Ridgewood, N.J.; her grandchildren, Maria Veilleux and her husband Michael, Matthew Sergi and his wife Sharon, Benjamin Sergi, and five great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary Church, Bethel Thursday, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, on Wednesday, from 5 to 8 p.m.
