Richard Peterson

November 14, 2003

Richard Steel Peterson, 76, a longtime Stamford resident, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, at Greenwich Hospital.

He died of cancer, according to his family.

Mr. Peterson was a former Greenwich resident who worked in the insurance business.

Born April 3, 1927, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Clarence R. Peterson Jr. and Mary Munich Peterson.

Mr. Peterson graduated from Greenwich High School and Poh's Institute of Insurance in New York City.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He went on to work for 43 years in the insurance business, first as a vice president of Charles L. Hansom Inc. Insurance Brokers in New York City. He stayed with the firm after its acquisition by Eifert, French & Co. in Pelham, N.Y., in 1972, and retired in 1992.

Mr. Peterson is survived by his wife, Nancy Carlson Peterson of Stamford; a daughter, Deborah P. Born of Fort Collins, Colo.; a son, Erick D. Peterson of Stamford; a sister, Joan P. Flanagan of Walpole, Mass.; a brother, Chad Peterson of Rocky Hill; and four grandchildren.

There are no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Dingletown Community Church, Stanwich Road at Barnstable Lane, Greenwich.

Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Greenwich Hospital, 5 Perryridge Road, Greenwich, CT 06830; or to the American Cancer Society, 372 Danbury Road, Wilton, CT 06897.

Herbert Mason

November 9, 2003

Herbert Wynn Mason Jr., 90, a longtime Greenwich resident, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, at his home in Greenwich.

He died of natural causes, according to his family.

Mr. Mason was a retired chemical executive.

Born July 28, 1913, in Montpelier, Ohio, he was a son of the late Herbert Wynn Mason Sr. and Harriett Sarah Van Hyning Mason.

Mr. Mason was raised in Detroit, graduating from Highland Park High School in 1932, and from the University of Michigan in 1936 with a bachelor's degree in petroleum geology and political science.

After college Mr. Mason joined Reichhold Chemicals Inc., an international supplier of industrial chemicals. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving four years in the Pacific as a lieutenant on the command ship The Rocky Mount. During his service Mr. Mason witnessed kamikaze attacks and took part in historic events such as Halsey's Typhoon, the release of the Bataan Peninsula POW survivors, and the surrender of the Japanese in Shanghai. After the war he remained in the Naval Reserve until 1953.

Mr. Mason rejoined Reichhold Chemicals in 1946. He moved to Greenwich when he went to work at the company's headquarters in Manhattan in 1953. During his career, he supervised the construction of and production at more than 40 chemical plants throughout Europe and South America. He rose to the position of executive vice president at Reichhold, from which he retired in 1968.

An enthusiastic yachtsman, he cruised extensively on his boat, Lion's Share, and in later years was an avid follower of the sailing activities of others from the porch of the Indian Harbor Yacht Club.

Mr. Mason was a former elder and trustee of the First Presbyterian Church of Greenwich, a former trustee of Blair Academy in Blairstown, N.J., and a member of the Nutmeggers, a local business club. He was also a member of the Round Hill Club, the Preston Mountain Club, a hunting and fishing club, and a past commodore of the Indian Harbor Yacht Club. In the 1950s, Mr. Mason served as the general manager of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

He is survived by two daughters, Merrill Mason of Philadelphia, and Sibley Lyons of Riverside; a brother, Charles P. Mason of Naples, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Joy Sibley Mason, and a brother, Joseph Mason.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church of Greenwich, 18 Lafayette Place, Greenwich.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Greenwich Hospital, 5 Perryridge Road, Greenwich, CT 06830; or to Greenwich Emergency Medical Services Inc., 1111 E. Putnam Ave., Greenwich, CT 06878.

Mary H. Budries, 98,

Mary H. Budries, 98, of Greenwich, died Friday, Nov. 7, at The Nathaniel Witherell nursing home in Greenwich.

She died of natural causes, according to her family.

Born Sept. 9, 1905, in Port Chester, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Oschula Banchiket Budries.

Mrs. Budries was a secretary at Con Edison for many years. She graduated from Port Chester High School and was an active parishioner of Sacred Heart Church in Byram.

Mrs. Budries is survived by a niece, Ruth Pell of Armonk, N.Y.; and two sisters-in-law, Kathleen Budries of Carmel, N.Y., and Catherine Budries of Glastonbury.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two brothers, Charles Budries and George Budries.

There are no calling hours.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church, 95 Henry St., Byram.

Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Rye Brook, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sacred Heart Church.

Ruth M. Balcerak, 86,

Ruth M. Balcerak, 86, of Greenwich, died Thursday, Nov. 6, at The Nathaniel Witherell nursing home in Greenwich.

She died of natural causes, according to her family.

Born Jan. 11, 1917, in Greenwich, she was a daughter of the late Peter and Pauline Mendoc Davis.

Mrs. Balcerak worked at Condé Nast Publications in Greenwich and central supply at Stamford Hospital prior to her retirement. She was a former member of the 9th District Veterans Women's Auxiliary. She was a board member of the Greenwich Senior/Arts Center.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Frank Balcerak, and a half sister, Anna Nugent.

She is survived by a son, Frank Balcerak of Eugene, Ore.; a daughter, Barbara Fulton of Norwalk; two sisters, Nell Hupal of Greenwich and Helen Stone of Las Vegas; two brothers, Raymond Davis of Greenwich and Benjamin Davis of Brookfield; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

There are no calling hours.

A graveside funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Cemetery on North Street. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Greenwich Senior/Arts Center, 299 Greenwich Ave., Greenwich, CT 06830.

J.B. Brown, 37,

November 3, 2003

J.B. Brown, 37, of Darien, a principal partner at the Hynes, Himmelreich, Glennon & Co. investment management firm in Darien, died Saturday, Nov. 1, at home.

The cause of death is unknown pending an autopsy, according to the office of the state medical examiner.

Born May 12, 1966, in Birmingham, Mich., he was the son of Vern and Sheila Henderson Brown of Wilmington, N.C.

Mr. Brown was a volunteer fireman with the Darien Fire Department and received the 2003 Rookie of the Year award. Mr. Brown also coached Darien Junior Flag Football and was active with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Megan Axthelm Brown of Darien; a son, Matthew Brown of Darien; a daughter, Mary Brown of Darien; and a sister, Heather Brown of Wilmington.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Wednesday at St. Thomas More Church, 374 Middlesex Road, Darien. The Rev. Robert Post will officiate.

Memorial donations may be made to the Matthew and Mary Brown College Education Fund, c/o Hynes, Himmelreich, Glennon & Co., 30 Old Kings Highway S., P.O. Box 4004, Darien, CT 06820.
