Josephine Chimblo

September 21, 2003

Josephine Chimblo, 91, of Cos Cob, died Saturday, Sept. 20, at Greenwich Hospital.

Se died of natural causes, according to her daughter, Rosalie Monahan of Cos Cob.

Mrs. Chimblo was a homemaker.

Born April 10, 1912, in Greenwich, she was the daughter of the late Rocco and Angelina Piro Curcio.

Mrs. Chimblo enjoyed gardening, especially growing orchids in her greenhouse.

In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Chimblo is survived by a son, Anthony J. Chimblo Jr. of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; four grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony J. Chimblo.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Castiglione Funeral Home, 134 Hamilton Ave., Greenwich.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Clement's Church in Stamford. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greenwich Senior Center, 299 Greenwich Ave., Greenwich CT 06830; or to State College Suzuki Program, 638 Berkshire Drive, State College, PA 16803.

Shirley J. Brown

September 20, 2003

Shirley J. Brown, 79, of Wales, Mass., a former South Norwalk resident, died Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Radius Healthcare Center in Millbury, Mass.

She died of natural causes, according to her family.

Mrs. Brown was a retired librarian who had worked at the Cos Cob Library.

Born Feb. 9, 1924, in Connecticut, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Jeannette E.C. Pierson Morrell.

She married the late David F. Brown in 1976.

Mrs. Brown was an avid reader and was active in lobbying for animal rights.

A funeral will be held at a time and date to be determined, in the Springfield Street Cemetery, 173 N. Westfield St., Feeding Hills, Mass.

Sansoucy Funeral Home, 40 Mercy St., Southbridge, Mass., handled arrangements.

James J. Amendum

September 20, 2003

James J. Amendum, 81, of Port Chester, N.Y., died Thursday, Sept. 18, at the United Hospital Medical Center in Port Chester.

He died of cancer, according to his family.

Mr. Amendum worked for 41 years at Arnold's bakery in Greenwich. He retired in 1989 from his job as supervisor of the slicing and wrapping department.

Born Jan. 14, 1922, in New York City, he was the son of the late Domenico and Consiglia Amendum.

Mr. Amendum lived in Port Chester for 50 years and was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church in Byram.

He graduated from Harrison High School in 1940, and served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1943.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Fortuso Amendum of Port Chester; a daughter, Grace Burnsworth of Whitesburg, Tenn.; two sons, James Amendum of Concord, N.C., and Donald Amendum of Concord, N.H.; two sisters, Caroline Bochicchio of Port Chester and Josephine Carnevalle of Harrison, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at the Joseph Tutera Funeral Home, 121 S. Regent St., Port Chester.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Church, 95 Henry St., Greenwich.

Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, 1 High St., Port Chester.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cancer Support Team, 993 Mamaroneck Ave., Mamaroneck, NY 10543.

Francis Van Deventer

September 20, 2003

Francis H. Van Deventer, 92, of Greenwich, died Thursday, Sept. 18, at his home.

He died of natural causes, according to his family.

Mr. Van Deventer was an executive of the General Foods Corp. for 20 years, before retiring in 1972.

Mr. Van Deventer began his business career with IBM Corporation in 1932 before moving to the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency. Later, he worked for Hewitt and Ogilvy in New York.

Born Sept. 19, 1911, in Passaic, N.J., he was the son of the late William and Irma Van Deventer.

Mr. Van Deventer graduated from The Gunnery in Washington, Conn.

During World War II, he was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations for Air.

He was a member of the Indian Harbor Yacht Club and a former member of the Round Hill Club, the Mill Reef Club and the Coral Beach Club.

He is survived by his wife, Audrie Hobbs Van Deventer of Greenwich; two sons, Peter Van Deventer of Kinnelon, N.J., and Warren Van Deventer of Weston; a stepson, Edward Thaxter of Stamford; a stepdaughter, Harriette Irvine of White Bear Lake, Minn.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Round Hill Community Church, 395 Round Hill Road, Greenwich.

Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Greenwich Hospital Home Hospice, 5 Perryridge Road, Greenwich, CT 06830.

John Speirs

September 18, 2003

John "Jack" Speirs, 83, of Greenwich, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Greenwich Hospital.

He died of cancer, according to his family.

Mr. Speirs retired as an executive vice president of finance from Lennen Newell Advertising in New York City in 1972.

Born Aug. 5, 1920, in Renfrew, Scotland, he was the son of the late Robert J. and Susan Howie Speirs.

After his retirement from Lennen Newell, Mr. Speirs worked for eight years as a controller for Trade Arber Steel in New York City. He was also the treasurer of the Archdiocese of Brooklyn for 10 years.

He graduated from Pace Institute of New York City and New York University. He served with the U.S. Navy in World War II.

A Scarsdale, N.Y., resident for many years, Mr. Speirs was chairman of the United Way in Scarsdale, where he was also a volunteer firefighter, a member of the board of the Scarsdale Golf Club, and a coach of youth soccer and softball for many years.

Later, while living at The Mews in Greenwich, he was the entertainment chairman.

He is survived by two daughters, Patricia Dadakis of Greenwich and Barbara Kerrigan of Bronxville, N.Y.; two sons, Douglas Speirs of South Salem, N.Y., and John Speirs of Taos, N.M.; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen Robinson Speirs.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch St., Greenwich.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Mary Church, 128 Greenwich Ave., Greenwich.

Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Mews, 1/2 Bolling Place, Greenwich, CT 06830.
