Joseph S. Cunningham

MERIDEN -- Joseph Stephen Cunningham, 55, of 548 Allen Ave., died Sunday, March 4, 2001, at MidState Medical Center.

Mr. Cunningham was born July 4, 1945, in Waterbury, a son of Kathryn (Daly) Cunningham of Cheshire and the late Francis R. Cunningham. He lived in Cheshire most of his life, having resided in Meriden for the past six years. He was a communicant of St. Bridget's Church.

Besides his mother of Cheshire, he leaves three brothers, F. Richard Cunningham, DDS of Simsbury, James D. Cunningham of Cheshire and Brian P. Cunningham, M.D.; and a sister, Carol A. Cunningham of New Brunswick, N.J.

The funeral will leave the Alderson Funeral Home, 615 S. Main St., Cheshire, Saturday at 9:15 a.m. to St. Bridget's Church for Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Bridget's Cemetery. Friends may call the funeral home Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Meriden/Wallingford Society for the Handicapped, 225 Cook Ave., Meriden, 06450 or to St. Bridget's School, 175 Main St., Cheshire, CT 06410.

David P. Forster

MERIDEN -- David P. Forster, 57, of 103 Stoddard Drive, husband of the late Susan (Dubuc) Forster, died suddenly at home on Monday, March 5, 2001.

Born in Meriden on June 4, 1943, a son of the late Harry R. and Julia Gula Forster, he was a graduate of Platt High School and had lived in Meriden for most of his life. Mr. Forster was retired from the Meriden Police Department after 15 years of service. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served with the U.S. Navy. Mr. Forster was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church and a member of the Wallingford Elks, VFW Post No. 585 and the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Jennifer Forster of Meriden and Lisa and Bill Driscoll of Wethersfield; a son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Debra Forster of Wallingford; three grandchildren, Samantha and Katelyn Forster and Jacob Driscoll; a sister, Joan Gosselin of Westbrook; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Edward and Betty Forster and Ronald and Josie Forster, all of Meriden; and several niece and nephews.

The funeral will be held on Friday, March 9, at 8:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, and at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph Church. Burial with military honors will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Julia C. Gardner

MERIDEN -- Julia Challis Gardner, wife of Warren F. Gardner, editor emeritus of the Meriden Record, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at the Connecticut Baptist Home.

Julia was born May 15, 1910, in Melrose, Mass., a daughter of Edward and Minnie Eldridge Challis. When Julia was 10, her father joined the Miller Company in Meriden, and the family moved to Connecticut, where she had lived ever since. Julia graduated in the Meriden High School class of 1927, and Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., class of 1931. She returned to Meriden High School to teach English, which she did until her marriage to Warren Fenn Bodurtha Gardner in 1949. In Southington from 1949 to 1971, she helped to raise his three children. She served as secretary of the Southington Visiting Nurse Association and was an active member of the American Association of University Women and a reading group. In 1971, she and Warren moved back to Meriden, and she cared for her mother, Minnie Challis, until her mother's death at age 97.

In addition to her husband, Warren, Julia is survived by her two sons, David (Alice) Gardner of Beverly, Mass. and Robert (Karen) Gardner of Newtown; and a daughter, Margaret (A. Neil) Skinner of Madison, Wis. She was a devoted grandmother to Christopher (Kathy) Gardner of Newtown, Andrew Gardner of Brookline, Mass., Dr. Timothy (JoEllen) Gardner of Hanover, N.H., Sarah (Christian) Cavanaugh of North Attleboro, Mass., E. Benjamin Skinner of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Sarah Gardner of Manchester, N.H.; also by a first cousin, Catherine (Tom) Peckenham of Walpole, Maine.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 10, at 3 p.m. at the Szymaszek-Taylor Funeral Home, 189 E. Main St., Meriden. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew's Church, AAUW-Meriden Branch or Wheaton College, Norton, Mass 02766.

Edward Gulewicz

WALLINGFORD -- Edward Gulewicz, 86, of 49 Woodland Drive died Tuesday, March 6, 2001 at the MidState Medical Center in Meriden. He was the husband of the late Helen (Kondracki) Smutko Gulewicz.

He was born in Jewett City on June 1, 1914, a son of the late Alexander and Antonette Hominski Gulewicz. Until his retirement, he was a machinist at the Stimpson Company in New York. He was a life member of the Wallingford Rod and Gun Club.

He is survived by a stepson, Michael S. Smutko and his wife, Joan of Wallingford; and one step-grandson, Michael E. Smutko. He was predeceased by two brothers, Bernard Gull and Stanley Gleason.

The funeral will leave the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 S. Elm St., on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul R.C. Church, 127 North Orchard St., Wallingford. Burial will be in the In Memoriam Cemetery, Wallingford. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4 to 8 PM. See obituary @

Elizabeth S. Haines

MERIDEN -- Elizabeth S. Haines, 82, formerly of Southington, died Monday, March 5, 2001, in Miller Memorial, 360 Broad St., Meriden. She was the wife of Irving M. Haines, and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Aug. 27, 2000.

She was born Dec. 2, 1918, in Medford, Mass., a daughter of the late Charles and Harriet Stevens. Elizabeth and Irving were both very active members of the Grace Baptist Church for 32 years.

Besides her husband, Irving, she is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Carlene Haines of Meriden; a grandson and his wife, Steven and Dana Haines of Tokyo, Japan; a granddaughter, Stacey Woodruff of Southington; and two great-grandchildren, Scott Woodruff and Kyle Woodruff, both of Southington.

There will be a memorial service Saturday, March 24, at 11 a.m. in Miller Memorial by the Rev. Cynthia Holden of the First Congregational Church of Southington. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts in her memory be sent to the Rose Mercuri Tomasetti Scholarship Fund, c/o Gloria Mercuri, 107 Windsor Ave., Meriden, CT 06451.

Philip J. Hamel Sr.

HAMDEN -- Philip J. Hamel Sr., 94, of Hamden, husband of the late Florence (Herget) Hamel, died March 5, 2001, at home.

He was born in Meriden, the son of Philip J. and Julia (Burns) Hamel. He lived in Hartford 60 years, moving to Hamden a year ago, and was retired from Dunham-Bush in West Hartford after working there 44 years.

He leaves a son, Philip J. Hamel Jr. and daughter-in-law Diane Hoffman of Hamden; four grandchildren, Deborah Zabel of Southington, Alicia Hudson of Hancock, Maine, Aurelia Hamel of Nantucket, Mass., and Thomas Hamel of Elmwood; and nine great-grandchildren.

There will be a funeral service Saturday, March 10, at 10 a.m. in the Rose Hill Funeral Home, 580 Elm St., Rocky Hill. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill. Calling hours are Friday, March 9, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Hartford Public Library, c/o Gary Furtek, 500 Main St., Hartford, CT 06103.

Florence E. Jones

WALLINGFORD -- Florence E. Jones, 94, formerly of 14 South Side Terrace, passed away peacefully in her sleep Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at the Skyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of the late Arthur Jones.

She was born in New Haven, March 29, 1906, a daughter of the late Walter and Jennie Bodwell Miller. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Wallingford.

She is survived by four sons, Arthur C. Jones, Sr. and Walter H. Jones, both of Wallingford, Richard C. Jones of Yalesville, and Leslie A. Jones of Canton, N.C.; five daughters, Jean E. Hanisko of New Port Richey, Fla., Roberta F. Dubar and Louise Martineck, both of Wallingford, Lorraine M. Morehouse of Broomfield, Colo., and Eleanor L. Parsons of Boynton Beach, Fla.; 25 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Kathleen Dobbins; two sisters, Lois Martin and Gladys Butts; and a brother, Charles W. Miller.

According to her wishes, funeral services and burial will be private. The B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 S. Elm Street is in charge of arrangements. Ann F. Murphy

HAMDEN -- Ann F. Murphy, of 125 Putnam Ave., Hamden, formerly of Austen Road, wife of the late John T. Murphy, died Sunday, March 4, 2001.

She was born in New Haven, a daughter of the late James J. and Mary Dinan Fitzgerald.

She was the mother of Robert T. Murphy of Wallingford, Gerald F. Murphy of Pennsylvania, Steven J. Murphy of Illinois, Carol M. Rogers of Wallingford and Joan M. Clifford of Newtown; mother-in-law of Marie Murphy, Gloria Murphy, Barbara Murphy, Charles A. Rogers and James T. Clifford; grandmother of Robert Murphy Jr., James Murphy, Roseann Thomas, Charles Rogers Jr., Carolyn Rogers-Ward, Steven Rogers, Jennifer Foreman, Alison Reyes, Todd Murphy, Troy Murphy, Erin Ross, Timothy Clifford, Conor Murphy, Tessa Murphy and Keith Murphy. She is also survived by 20 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Ellen Murphy; and brothers and sisters Elizabeth Fitzgerald, Mrs. James (Julia) Barrens, Mrs. John (Mary) Minahan and James and Raymond J. Fitzgerald.

The funeral will be from Sisk Brothers Funeral Home, 3105 Whitney Ave., Hamden, Saturday at 9:30 a.m., with a Mass of Christian burial in St. Rita Church at 10 a.m. Friends may call Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery. Dominic J. Perry

SOUTHINGTON -- Dominic J. Perry, 88, formerly of 618 West St., died Monday March 5, 2001, at Southington Care Center. He was the husband of the late Helen (Giantonio) Perry.

Born on Nov. 1, 1912, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Felicia Perry. Prior to his retirement in 1970, he was employed by New Departure in Bristol for 35 years. He had also worked at the Popular Restaurant for several years. Mr. Perry had served in the National Guard and was a parishioner of St. Thomas Church.

He is survived by two sons, Dominic R. and his wife, Charlotte Perry of North Haven, and Police Chief William B. Perry of Southington; a daughter, Sharon and her husband, Michael Fensick of Mass.; two brothers, John and Anthony Perry, both of Southington; two sisters, Katherine Baldaccini of Southington and Madeline Romatis of Berlin; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph; a sister, Christine; and a daughter-in-law, Beverly Perry.

The funeral will be held on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. from the Della Vecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., to St. Thomas Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.
