Edward Stanley Raila,

a lifelong Norwalk resident, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001 at Norwalk Hospital. He was 76.

He died of cardiac arrest, according to his family.

Born Aug. 31, 1924, in Norwalk, he was a son of the late Stanley J. and Barbara Anne Vasilaukas Raila.

Mr. Raila served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a B-17 pilot during World War II.

He was manager of new product development at Burndy Corp. for 34 years until retiring in 1985. He held 12 patents assigned to the company. He wrote technical articles and established electrical standards for the utility industry.

After retiring, he became a U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain. He was a captain of the RV Oceanic for the Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk and the Sheffield Island Ferry for the Seaport Association. He ferried boats on the intercoastal between Maine and Florida.

He was a member of the Shore and Country Club, Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, Seaport Association and Power Squadron. He also was a member of Saugatuck Congregational Church in Westport.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Jean Kellogg Raila of Norwalk; two sons, Douglas Glenn Raila of Danbury and David Alan Raila of Trumbull; a daughter, Barbara Anne Raila Staszak of North Grafton, Mass.; a brother, Whitton A. Raila of Norwalk; two granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001 at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Ave., Norwalk.

Services will be announced by the funeral home.

Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Riverside Avenue, Norwalk.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, Office of Development, 10 N. Water St., Norwalk, CT 06854.

Victor L. Benvenuto

Victor Louis "Hornet" Benvenuto, a lifelong Greenwich resident, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001 at Greenwich Hospital. He was 78.

Albert H. Davis II

Albert Harding Davis II, a Darien resident, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000 at home. He was 92.

Michael Greco

Michael Greco of Palm Beach, Fla., a former Stamford resident, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000 at Manor Care in West Palm Beach, Fla. He was 84.

Albert W. Macsata Sr.

Albert William Macsata Sr., a resident of Princeton, N.J., died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000 at Princeton Hospital. He was 82.

Edward S. Raila

Edward Stanley Raila, a lifelong Norwalk resident, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001 at Norwalk Hospital. He was 76.

Kathleen F. Reilly

Kathleen Frances Reilly, a Stamford resident, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000 at Stamford Hospital. She was 58.

Anna Sforza

Anna Sforza, a Stamford resident, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000 at Stamford Hospital. She was 81.

Sophia Wilson

Sophia Prattas Wilson, a Stamford resident, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000 at Stamford Hospital. She was 55.

Sheila Bolger Becker,

a Greenwich resident, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001 at home in Greenwich. She was 71.

She died of cancer, according to her family.

Born Feb. 3, 1929, in Evanston, Ill., she was a daughter of the late James Dennis and Mildred Caroline Bloom Bolger.

Mrs. Becker graduated from the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest, Ill., and attended Barat College.

She modeled in the late 1940s in Chicago under the name Sheila Jackson.

In the early 1950s, Mrs. Becker appeared on the "Today Show" in Chicago and was one of the first women to work on a television sports show, interviewing the most valuable player after Chicago Cubs games at Wrigley Field.

In 1955, she moved to New York and continued to work in television, appearing on the "Today Show" with Steve Allen. She became a spokesperson and U.S. ambassador for goodwill for "The United States Steel Hour."

Mrs. Becker was on the board of the Bruce Museum in Greenwich and served as its chairwoman for four years.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, John T. Becker of Greenwich; four daughters, Jamee Becker of New York City, Lisa Edmundson of Greenwich, Virginia "Gigi" Rhodes-Koch of Lyme and Margaret McDonough of San Francisco; a son, Frank "Jed" Becker of Darien; a sister, Cynthia Bolger of Woodbridge; a brother, Dennis Bolger of New York City; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Calling hours will be 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001 at the Fred D. Knapp & Son funeral home, 267 Greenwich Ave.

A service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2001 at St. Agnes Church, 247 Stanwich Road, Greenwich. Burial will follow in Putnam Cemetery in Greenwich.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Greenwich Hospital, Home Care Hospice, 5 Perryridge Road, Greenwich, CT 06830; or the Bruce Museum, 1 Museum Dr., Greenwich, CT 06830.

Maurice S. Giordano

Maurice S. Giordano, a resident of Cliffside Park, N.J., died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001 at Passiac Beth Israel Hospital in Passiac, N.J. He was 65.

He died of postsurgical complications, according to his family.

Born Jan. 19, 1935, in Stamford, he was the son of the late Antonio and Maria Gasparini Giordano.

Mr. Giordano graduated from Stamford High School in 1952. He owned and operated several dry-cleaning establishments in Stamford and New Jersey.

He was an avid boatsman. He owned and trained horses for harness racing in Freehold, N.J.

He is survived by his former wife, Elaine Low Giordano of Shelton; a son, Robert A. Giordano of Stamford; four daughters, Barbara M. Cavuoto and Marianne Lutkins, both of Shelton, Laura J. Chrostowski of Darien and Elizabeth Scherer of Hawthorne, N.J.; a sister, Angelina Santoro of Stamford; and eight grandchildren.

Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001 at Lacerenza Funeral Home, 8 Schuyler Ave., Stamford.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2001 at Sacred Heart Church, 37 Schuyler Ave., Stamford.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 372 Danbury Road, Wilton, CT 06897.

Elizabeth T. Martinez

Elizabeth T. Koval Martinez, a Stamford resident, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001 at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport. She was 83.

She died of cardiac arrest, according to her family.

Born April 2, 1917, in Coatesville, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Julius and Elizabeth Praskay Koval.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Gabriel Church of Stamford.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas A. Martinez Jr. and Robert L. Martinez, both of Norwalk; a sister, Frances Dolan of Pitts Grove, N.J.; a brother, Jules Skalka of Washington state; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas A. Martinez Sr.

Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001 at Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford.

A procession will leave the funeral home at 9:50 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, and head to St. Gabriel Church, 914 Newfield Ave., Stamford, for a Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 a.m.

Burial will follow in Queen of Peace Cemetery, Rockrimmon Road, Stamford.

Rosario Vartuli

Rosario Vartuli, a longtime Stamford resident, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001 at Stamford Hospital. He was 84.

He died of natural causes, according to his family.

Born May 3, 1916, in Winooski, Vt., he was the son of the late Francesco and Maria Antonia Siciliano Vartuli.

Mr. Vartuli was a Stamford resident for 46 years. He was an employee of American Cyanamid Co. in Stamford for 18 years before retiring in 1981.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Church and the Lega-Arena/Dasa Society of Stamford.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine Josephine Pagano Vartuli of Stamford; five sons, Frank Vartuli, Michael Vartuli and Dominick Vartuli, all of Stamford, Nicola Vartuli of Lake Charles, La., and Anthony Vartuli of West Haven; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001 at Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford.
