William Cirillo

MERIDEN -- William "Bill" Salvatore Cirillo, 87, of 222 Olive St., passed away peacefully at MidState Medical Center on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002. He was the husband of Shirley Greenbacker Cirillo.

He was born in Meriden on July 9, 1915, a son of the late Salvatore and Grace Barucci Cirillo. He was a graduate of Meriden High School, class of 1933 and was a member of the National Honor Society. He attended the Pequod Business School and was a graduate of the Travelers Insurance School. He completed five years in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was in the Coast Artillery and Quartermaster Corp., serving 27 months in the European Theater of Operations in Africa, Sicily, and Italy. He attended Officers Training School in Camp Lee, Virginia and Army Engineers Experimental Camouflage School in Boston, Mass. Besides the Mediterranean Ribbon and A.D. Ribbon, he was awarded two Bronze Service Stars for the North African and European Campaigns during WWII. He was honorably discharged as a Captain in 1946. He was employed by the Russell Hall Company for 46 years. He had also worked at Upham's Department Store and G. Fox and Company in Hartford, Hamilton Shops in Branford and Miner, Read and Tullock Inc. in Meriden. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Meriden for 71 years, serving as a Treasurer for 26 years, Church School Visual Aid Director, Assistant Church School Coordinator, Church School Teacher and he served as Chairman of the Finance Committee, the Bequest Fund Committee, the Youth Committee and the Diaconate. He was a member of the Meriden Rotary Club and served as a former Director. He belonged to the American Legion.

Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Linda " Lynn" J. Cirillo and husband, Paul Sikora and Joanne Cirillo, all of Meriden; two grandchildren, Tracy and husband, Kirt Guest of Meriden and Joseph Cirillo; and a brother, Albert and his wife, Ann Cirillo of Meriden. He was loved deeply and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Joyce Cirillo and Teresa Cirillo.

Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church 460 Broad St., Meriden on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 10 a.m. Burial with military honors will be at Walnut Grove . There will be no calling hours. Bertram A. Ashworth Sr.

WALLINGFORD -- Bertram A. Ashworth Sr., 77, of Fifth Ridge Road, Wallingford, entered into the presence of the Lord Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at the MidState Medical Center in Meriden. He was the beloved husband of Janet L. Strachan Ashworth.

Born in Boston, Mass., Jan. 1, 1925, he was a son of the late John J. and Elizabeth Petrie Ashworth and had been a resident of Hyde Park, Mass., until moving to Wallingford many years ago. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II in the Pacific Theatre aboard the USS Markab and the Korean War, he also served as First Class Boiler Maker Instructor at the U.S. Naval Training Center in Great Lakes Ill. He was employed as a Mechanic and Inspector for the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad for many years until his retirement 17 years ago, during which time he served as a Spiritual Leader and custodian at the Fellowship of Life Church in Cheshire, and was an active and much loved member of Faith Living Church in the Plantsville section of Southington. Bert was an accomplished model ship builder and loved designing and making unique gifts for his family and friends. His loving devotion to his wife and family, and his humble generous spirit touched the hearts of many.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Carol L. and Bruce E. Bryand of Meriden; his two sons and daughters-in-law, Bertram A. Ashworth Jr. and Rosemarie Ashworth and David B. Ashworth and Pamela Ashworth, all of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; 16 grandchildren, Derek, Celina and John Ashworth, Briana and Daniel Yopp, Justin Bryand and fiancée, Diane, Mariah Bryand and fiancé, Rob, Althea and Jesse Bryand, Kelli Lunsford, Robert and Debbie Boles, Samuel and Kimberly Boles; he also leaves his two loving sisters and brothers in law, Carol and Bill Brackett of Wallingford and Pauline and John Potts of Quincy, Mass.; his brother, John C. Ashworth of Tampa Fla.; and several beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Lizotte.

His family will receive relatives and friends in the Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main St., Yalesville section of Wallingford, Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services Monday at 10 a.m. in the Faith Living Church, Plantsville. The Pastor Joe Stublarec, will officiate. Interment with military honors will be in the State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown. John J. Cassidy

WALLINGFORD -- John J. Cassidy, 67, of William St., Wallingford, husband of Alicia McAvoy Cassidy, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002 at home.

Born in Motherwell, Scotland, Jan. 3, 1935, son of the late James and Annie McGarry Cassidy, he came to the United States in 1963 to play Soccer for the Italian-American Stars. He had been a custodian at Holy Trinity School for 25 years until his retirement, and was currently employed at the Wallingford Park and Recreation Department. He was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church, and a member and past Grand Knight of Pinta Council No. 5, Knights of Columbus.

Besides his wife , he is survived by his two sons and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Jennifer Cassidy of Doylestown, Pa., and Patrick Cassidy of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and two grandchildren, Caroline and Andrew Cassidy. He was predeceased by three sisters, Mary McNulty, Anne Costanzo and Margaret Scullion.

His family will receive relatives and friends Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford. Funeral services will be held Saturday from The Wallingford Funeral Home at 9:30 a.m., when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery. Gifts in his memory may be sent to the Columbiette Campership Fund, c/o Ann LaVoie, 58 Pond Hill Rd., Wallingford, CT 06492.

Alfred L. Alexander

HADDAM -- Alfred "Roy" L. Alexander of 77 Little Meadow Road, died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at his home. He was the husband of Marilyn Cook Alexander.

Born in Meriden on Jan. 10, 1933, he was the son of the late William and Louise Mattick Alexander. He had been employed as a machinist at Electric Boat in Groton until his retirement in 1995, and was a member of the Masons, Frederick Lodge No. 14 in Plainville.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Depaolis of Waterford; two sons, William Alexander of Columbus, Ind., and David Alexander of Waterford; six grandchildren, Brandy Depaolis of Waterford, Amy Alexander of Michigan, Katie Alexander and Lauren Alexander, both of Virginia, Kelli Alexander and Taylor Alexander, both of Waterford; five stepchildren, Stanley Gura of Meriden, Daniel Gura and Mary Emerling, both of Colchester, JoAnne Gura of New Britain and Diane Levy of Plainville; nine step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Jeanette Eshner and Virginia Fox; and a brother, Robert Alexander.

The funeral will be held Sunday, Dec. 8, at 3 p.m. at the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. The Rev. Perry L. Beaver will officiate. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Burial in West Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.

Bertram A. Ashworth Sr.

Willis E. Copeland

WALLINGFORD -- Willis E. Copeland, Sr., 90, of Ashlar Village, husband of the late Kathryne Strouse Copeland, passed away Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002.

He was the father of Ann Smith of Delaware, Ohio, Mary Ellen Copeland of West Dummerston, Vt., Willis E. Copeland Jr. of Bethany, Peter Copeland and William Copeland, both of Hamden; brother of Harry Copeland of San Francisco, Calif., William Copeland of Galt, Calif., Elizabeth Christman of Wallingford, Barbara Stark of Clark Summit, Pa., and Flora Vendetti of Peabody, Mass., also survived by 22 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by four brothers, Charles, John, Clarence, Raymond Copeland; two sisters, Helen Copeland and Marion Colburn; and two grandchildren.

Willis was born in New London, July 11, 1912, a son of the late William E. and Helen Miner Copeland. He retired as a general road foreman at Con Rail after 40 years with N.Y., N.H., and H RR and Amtrak and was Secretary of J.T. Furrey Inc. for the past 32 years. He was an active member of Mount Carmel Congregational Church for many years and was active in the Masonic Order, a member of Day Spring Lodge No. 30 AF and AM for over 50 years, Scottish Rite-Valley of New Haven, Lafayette Consistory, Shrine Pyramid Temple, Paleski Chapter of Royal Arch Masons, Crawford Council, Royal and Select Masons, New Haven Commandry No. 2, Knights Temple, Hejas Grotto, Hamden Grange, a local chairman in the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and past president and executive secretary of Railway Fuel and Operating Officers Assoc.

Relatives and friends may call at Beecher & Bennett, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden, Sunday, Dec. 8, from 3 to 6 p.m. Masonic service at 6 p.m. Funeral Service on Monday at 10 a.m. at Mount Carmel Congregational Church. Interment at Mount Carmel Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Carmel Congregational Church, 3284 Whitney Ave., Hamden 06518 or to Masonic Charity Foundation, PO 70, Wallingford 06492.

Nelson H. Gaudet

SOUTHINGTON -- Nelson Henry Gaudet, 59, of Laning St., Southington, beloved husband of Maureen C. (Holohan) Gaudet, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002 at the Bradley Memorial Hospital, Southington.

He was born in Prince Edward Isle, Canada, the son of the late Joseph and Edna (Gallant) Gaudet. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a general foreman with Thrio Electric Contractors.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Ron Ingraham of Southington and Harry Ingraham of Meriden; three brothers, Claude Gaudet of Cromwell and Kevin and Gordon Gaudet of Prince Edward Isle, Canada; a sister, Noreen Gaudet of Nova Scotia; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are private and burial will be at the convenience of the family. Those who wish, may send memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, 538 Preston Ave., Meriden, CT 06450-1004. The Biega Funeral Home, Middletown has care of the arrangements.

Sidney Kaye

SILVER SPRING, Md. -- Sidney Kaye, 87, formerly of Meriden, died Thursday, Dec 5, 20002, at the Bedford Court Health Care Center in Silver Spring, Md.

Mr. Kaye and his twin brother, Jerome Kosofsky founded the Meriden Fruit and Produce Company. Mr. Kaye served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and was a member of Temple B'nai Abraham.

He is survived by his wife, Florence Kaye; his son, Kenneth Kaye; his daughter, Susan Kaye Quinn; two granddaughters, Jennifer Brest and Abigail Quinn; and his brothers, Marvin and Jerome Kosofsky.

Burial will follow a graveside funeral at the Temple B'nai Abraham Cemetery on Corrigan Ave., Meriden, Sunday, Dec 8, at 1p.m.

Barbara Kelly

MERIDEN -- Barbara Mallon Kelly, 64, of 360 Broad St., wife of Robert V. Kelly, died Friday morning, Dec. 6, 2002, at her home after a lengthy illness.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, on July 28, 1938, the daughter of the late Patrick and Mary Stewart Mallon, she had resided in Meriden for some 20 years. She graduated from St. Brendan High School and St. John's University, and attended Wesleyan University. Mrs. Kelly was employed by Houghton Mifflin Company as an education consultant for 27 years before retiring in 1993. Prior to Houghton Mifflin Company, Mrs. Kelly was a teacher in the New York public schools and in the Department of Defense Dependent Schools, having taught in Okinawa and Germany.

Besides her husband, Robert, she is survived by three sisters and a brother-in-law, Maureen Watson of Long Island, Eileen Donovan of Staten Island, and Patricia and Patrick Keane of Long Island; also several nieces and nephews.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend a memorial Mass to be held on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to MidState VNA & Hospice, 658 Broad St., Meriden, CT 06450.
