Barbaraann Caputo-Hoffman

Barbaraann Caputo-Hoffman, a lifelong Stamford resident, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001 at Stamford Hospital. She was 45.

Howard Harry Conley Jr.

Howard Harry Conley Jr. of Stamford, a former Greenwich resident, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001 at Greenwich Hospital. He was 85.

He died of natural causes, according to his family.

Born Oct. 30, 1915, in Little Rock, Ark., he was a son of the late Howard Harry Conley and Marie Dodge Cates Conley.

Mr. Conley graduated from Little Rock Senior High School in 1932 and attended Little Rock Junior College. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Finance in 1936, where he was a member of the Beta Beta Pi fraternity and the fencing team.

He joined the New York Life Insurance Co. in Little Rock and worked at the company's offices in Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Norfolk, Va., Savannah, Ga., Birmingham, Ala., and New York City for more than 44 years. He was a vice president of marketing when he retired in 1980.

Mr. Conley served as a deacon and member of the board of trustees for the First Congregational Church of Old Greenwich. He was a volunteer in the Greenwich Chapter of the American Red Cross, where he served as president and on the board of directors, which honored him in 1992 with the Outstanding Service Award.

He also was a member of the Retired Men's Association of Greenwich, where he was the photographer and former president. He shared photographs of his travels at meetings.

He was a founding member of Senior.net at the senior center in Greenwich, where he taught computer classes. He also was the photographer for the center's Commission on Aging's newsletter and a tax counselor for AARP. He was a founding member of the play-reading group, Turkey of the Month Club in Riverside.

He is survived by his wife, Katharine Edwards Conley of Stamford; three sons, Howard Conley III of Washington, D.C., Alston E. Conley of Newton, Mass., and John Conley of Concord, Mass.; a daughter, Katharine Conley Ahern of Vienna, Va.; and a sister, Mayriann Conley Hurst of Little Rock, Ark.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 17, 2001 at First Congregational Church, 108 Sound Beach Ave., Old Greenwich.

Burial is private.

Memorial donations in his name may be made to the Greenwich Chapter of the American Red Cross, or to the charity of one's choice.

Julia Rosa

Julia Rosa of Coral Springs, Fla., a former resident of Stamford and Norwalk, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001 at Florida Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale. She was 80.

Joseph Sancho Jr.

Joseph Sancho Jr., a Bridgeport resident, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001 at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport. He was 57.

He died of cancer, according to his family.

Born Aug. 20, 1943, in Bradenton. Fla., he was the son of the late Joseph Sancho and Ada B. McCoy Sancho Sr.

He is survived by his son, Joseph Earl Sancho III of Plainfield, N.J.; a daughter, Stephanie Sancho of Plainfield; three brothers, Lathelle Sancho of Zurich, Switzerland, Kirby Sancho of Bradenton, Fla., and Michael Steersman of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; six sisters, Joanne Workman, Tilda Hines, Ruby Harris, all of Stamford, Carrie Gilyard and Maxine Hornes, both of Bradenton, Fla., and Florence Lamour Simon of Palmetto, Fla.; one grandson; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Calling hours will be 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001 at Greater Mount Carmel Church, 719 Connecticut Ave., Bridgeport.

A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the church. The Rev. Cleveland James will officiate. Burial will be at the Mansion Memorial Park, Bradenton, Fla.

George J. Peterson Funeral Home, 1041 Noble Ave., Bridgeport handled the arrangements.

William Liggett Shenton

William Liggett Shenton, a longtime Stamford resident, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000 at Stamford Hospital. He was 67.

He died of complications from emphysema, according to his family.

Born Jan. 9, 1933, in Pottstown, Pa., he was a son of the late William Liggett and Ruth Sassaman Shenton.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Hoogs Shenton of Stamford; a brother, Stephen Shenton of Shippensburg, Pa.; a sister, Suzanne Galvin of Sonoma, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001 at North Stamford Congregational Church, 31 Cascade Road, Stamford.

Bertha Richardson

Bertha Richardson, a resident of Newport News, Va., died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001 at Sentara Hospital in Hampton, Va. She was 62.

She died of heart failure, according to her family.

Born Aug. 4, 1938, in Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Ocshell and Maria Lang.

Ms. Richardson was a member of the Miracle Temple Baptist Church in Newport News. She sang in the choir and was a member of the church board.

She is survived by two daughters, Sylvia Teel of Spring Hope, N.C., and Catherine Cooper of Florida; three brothers, Richard Osborn of Smithfield, Va., Ocshell Lang Jr. of Hampton and James Lee Lang of Baltimore; two sisters, Easter May Melton of Newport News, and Wilnett Wilson of Stamford; 16 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two daughters, Shirley Bradford and Brenda Oliver.

Calling hours will be 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001 at Cooke Brothers Funeral Chapel, 1601 27th St., Newport News.

A funeral service will be at noon Monday, Jan. 15, 2001 at Miracle Temple Baptist Church, 617 32nd St., Newport News.

Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Hampton.

Hattie Viggiano

Hattie Viggiano, a lifelong Stamford resident, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001 at Sunrise Assisted Living of Stamford. She was 95.

She died of natural causes, according to her family.

Born May 23, 1905, in Stamford, she was a daughter of the late Vincenzo and Vincenza De Naples.

Mrs. Viggiano was a retired clerk at General Electric Credit in Stamford.

She is survived by a daughter, Annette M. O'Hagan of Stamford; a son, Paul Viggiano of Waverly, N.Y.; two sisters, Eunice Ottaviano and Mary Kitlas, both of Stamford; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Salvatore Viggiano; four brothers, Anthony De Naples, Michael De Naples, Louis De Naples and John De Naples; and three sisters, Ellen Gianetti, Ann Zarth and Lizzie Conte.

Services and burial were private.

Memorial donations may be made to Aid for the Retarded Inc., 174 Richmond Hill Ave., Stamford, CT 06902.

Jennifer Pagan Mendez

Jennifer Pagan Mendez, a lifelong Stamford resident, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001 at Yale-New Haven Hospital. She was 16.

She died of respiratory failure, according to her family.

Born July 26, 1984, in Stamford, she was a daughter of Juan Pagan and Angela Mendez, both of Stamford.

Ms. Pagan Mendez was a student at Westhill High School in Stamford.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by two sisters, Ana Zamani and Angelica Pagan, both of Stamford; a brother, Ivan Alvarez of Stamford; her maternal grandparents, Jorge and Alicia Mendez of Stamford; her paternal grandmother, Blanca Pantojas of Stamford; two nephews and a niece.

A funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001 at St. Benedict's-Our Lady of Montserrat Church, 1 St. Benedict Circle, Stamford.

Burial is private.

Paul Lothair Kohnstamm

Paul Lothair Kohnstamm, a resident of New Canaan and Whitefish, Mont., died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2001 at a hospital in Whitefish. He was 78.

He died of natural causes, according to his family.

Born Nov. 14, 1922, in New York City, he was a son of the late Lothair and Madeline Peck Kohnstamm.

Mr. Kohnstamm graduated from Williams College in 1944. He worked in the chemical industry. He was chairman and president of H. Kohnstamm and Co., founded by his family in 1851. He was president of The Chemists' Club in the late 1980s.

He was chairman of the campaign that funded construction of the Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City. For 40 years, he was a board member for Jewish Home and Hospital for the Aged.

He is survived by his wife, Maisie Kohnstamm of Whitefish; two daughters, Katherine Priven of Baltimore and Emily Beal of Boston; four sons, Kenneth Kohnstamm and Joshua Kohnstamm, both of St. Paul, Minn., Peter Kohnstamm of Larchmont, N.Y., and Daniel Kohnstamm of Whitefish; a brother, Richard Kohnstamm of Portland, Ore.; a sister, Elizabeth Ogden of Harrison, N.Y.; and 11 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001 at the Hospital for Joint Diseases auditorium, 17th Street and Grammercy Park, New York City.

Johnson Mortuary in Kalispell, Mont., handled arrangements.
