Les F. Sasso

MERIDEN -- Les F. Sasso, 44, of 60 Hanover St., died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, unexpectedly at home.

Mr. Sasso was born in Meriden on March 12, 1958, son of Frank and Shirleyann (Grimord) Sasso and had resided here most of his life. He attended local schools and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during peacetime. Les was an avid musician who loved to play the guitar.

Besides his parents, he is survived by one sister, Vicki Reicher of Belleville, Texas; and by his brother and best friend, Dean Sasso of Meriden, who will both miss him greatly.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at 10 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., and at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, Feb. 4, from 9 to 10 a.m.

Edward L. Bagnaschi Sr.

MERIDEN -- Edward Louis "Bags" Bagnaschi Sr., 69, of 50 Sperry Lane, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, surrounded by his loving family after a seven-year courageous battle with leukemia. He was the beloved husband for 47 years of Phyllis (Muscatello) Bagnaschi.

Born in Meriden on July 30, 1933, the son of the late Ettore and Marianna (Ollari) Bagnaschi. Ed was a U.S Army veteran of the Korean War, serving with the second infantry. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a supervisor at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford for 37 years. He enjoyed working part time at Home Hardware during his retirement. He was a member of the 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus and he also volunteered for their weekly Bingo He loved gardening, traveling, fishing and thoroughbred racing. Ed was a devoted family man.

In addition to his wife he is survived by his loving children, Edward Bagnaschi Jr. and his wife, Bernice of Meriden; a daughter, Elisa A. DellaVecchia of West Hartford; two granddaughters, Michelle and her husband, James Scott, Jessica Sansoucie; and grandson, SN Edward L. Bagnaschi III, presently serving on the USS Camden in the Persian Gulf; a cherished sister, Ann Knell and her husband, Clint of Meriden; two nieces, Cindy and her husband, Greg Simone and Crystal and her husband, Ken Sullivan, all of Southington; a nephew, Gary and his wife, Mary Knell of East Hartford; three great-nieces, Danielle, Kimberly and Shannon; and several treasured cousins.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday at 9 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, at 10 a.m. for a Mass. Burial with military honors will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, 538 Preston Ave., Meriden, CT 06450 or Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School, 115 Lewis Ave., Meriden, CT 06450

Alton R. Church

NORTH EASTHAM, Mass. -- Alton Richard Church, 79, of 85 Rolling Lane, formerly of Meriden, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at Harbor Hill Care Center in Middletown. He was the husband of Barbara Messner Church.

Born in Meriden on Aug, 24, 1923, he was the son of the late Kenneth and Leone Maronde Church. He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II, and was employed as superintendent of maintenance at World Tableware in Wallingford for 44 years. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 45 of South Meriden, the Legion Post in Orleans, Mass., Elks Lodge No. 35 in Meriden, Elks Lodge No. 2572 in North Eastham and the Golf Club in Wellfleet, Mass. He also was a member of the Wallingford State Guard for 10 years.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Enid Learned of Meriden and Holly and Francis Solecki of Boca Raton, Fla.; a sister, Marcia Thornton of Southington; a sister-in-law, Irene Church of Meriden; a grandson and his wife, Kevin and Melinda Learned of Meriden; two great-granddaughters, Caitlin Falkowski and Portia Learned, both of Meriden; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Wayne Church; and a son-in-law, Newall Learned.

The funeral will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Beecher & Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. The Rev. Anne Jensen will officiate. Burial will be Walnut Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. If desired, contributions in Mr. Church's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 2911 Dixwell Ave., Hamden, CT 06518.

Edward A. Drozda

GREENVILLE, R.I. -- Edward A. Drozda of Calderwood Drive, Greenville, husband of the late Bernice G. (Wollschlager) Drozda passed away, Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003.

He was the father of Gail A. Ricci and Edward A. Drozda Jr.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 8:30 a.m. from the Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home, Rte. 44 Greenville Common, Greenville, R.I. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. in St. Philip Church, 622 Putnam Pike, Greenville, R.I. Visitation at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Frank Longo

SOUTHINGTON -- Frank "Pete" Longo, 87, husband of Carmela "Millie" (Galiette) Longo of 175 Berlin St., Southington, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at Bradley Memorial Hospital.

He was born Oct. 28, 1915, in Southington, son of the late Peter and Josephine (Pepe) Longo. He was a member of St. Thomas Church, a lifetime member of the Redmen and Calendar House. And the Senior Citizens Golf League. Prior to his retirement he was employed by Macristy Industries of New Britain.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Francine and Robert Holm of Marion and Nanciel and Louis Sarno of Middletown; two sisters, Margaret Maynard of Old Saybrook and Viola Martin of Southington; his beloved grandchildren, Gregory Holm of Arlington, Va., Joseph Sarno of Middletown and Douglas and his wife, Laura Holm of West Hartford; also several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brothers, William, Louis, John and Michael Longo; and his sisters, Rose Landrette and Anna Guidry.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Church, Bristol St., Southington. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery, Southington. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Thomas School or Arc of Southington, West Main St., Plantsville or the Renovation Fund of St. Sebastian Church, 155 Washington St., Middletown. Arrangements are under the direction of the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington.

Nancy A. Sears

KILLINGWORTH -- Nancy A. Sears, daughter of the late William and Ann (Kiely) Mulcahy of Killingworth, passed away Friday, Jan. 31, 2003 at Middlesex Hospice, Middletown, after a courageous nine-year battle with cancer.

Besides her husband, Jack, she is survived by her sons, Eric Melesky of Florida and Thomas Melesky of Bristol; stepson, John Sears and his wife, Cheryl of Higganum; stepdaughters, Kathy Shine and her husband, Tim of Higganum, Terri Steele and her husband, Mark of Meriden; eight loving grandchildren, Heather and Janice Melesky, Jennafer and Mark Steele, Kelsey and Timothy Shine, Lindsey and Jackie Sears; sister-in-law, Shirley Kiely and her husband, Jim of Westbrook; and many loving cousins. She was predeceased by her twin brother, William Mulcahy.

Nancy Sears was a founding member of the Lighthouse Cancer Group of Killingworth.

A memorial service will be celebrated at the First Congregational Church of Haddam, Rte. 154, 905 Saybrook Road, Haddam, on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Lighthouse Cancer Group, c/o Killingworth Library Rte. 81, Killingworth, CT 06419. Oak Grove Cremation Service of West Haven has care of arrangements.

Albert W. Spengler

WALLINGFORD -- Albert W. Spengler, 84, beloved husband of the late Helen J. Hintz Spengler, of Apple Tree Lane, Wallingford, died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at Mapleview Manor in Rocky Hill.

Born in Middletown, Jan. 7, 1919, a son of the late Christian and Sophie Krause Spangler, he had been a Wallingford resident for many years. He was employed by the Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Corporation in North Haven until his retirement, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, having served in the European Theater during World War II, and was the recipient of the Purple Heart.

He is survived by his nieces and nephews, Lillian Miano, Bill Piasecki, Pat Collins, Miki Adams, Kathleen Pasieka and Stan Pasieka; and devoted friends, Joe and Pauline Breton and kind neighbors. He was predeceased by his two sisters, Alma Spangler-Piasecki and Emma Pasieka; and his brother, Adolph Christian Spangler.

He was a kind and unpretentious man and will be sorely missed.

His family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St., Ext., Wallingford, Wednesday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. followed by a Christian funeral service at 11 a.m. Interment with military honors, will be in St. John Cemetery in Wallingford.

Frederick A. Blake

PLYMOUTH -- Frederick A. Blake, 84, formerly of Hillside Ave., Plymouth, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003 at Sierra Vista Hospital in Sierra Vista, Ariz. He was the widower of Lillian (Melvin) Blake and Rose (Maddox) Blake.

Mr. Blake was born Feb. 4, 1918, in Waterbury, son of the late Harold F. and Caroline (Stock) Blake. He was a foreman for New Departure Hyatt Bearing in Bristol, retiring after 30 years. He moved to Arizona 13 years ago. He was an Army and Marine Corps veteran of World War II, and was a member of the Marine Corps Association. He will always be remembered for his love of family and nature.

He leaves three daughters, Mary Alford of Bristol, Cathy Molnar of Meriden and Carole Blake of Hartford; two sisters, Caroline Sanford of Plymouth and Jean Pearson of Bradenton, Fla.; seven grandchildren; Gary Alford of East Hartford, Amy Alford of Bristol, Brian Konopka of Manchester, Richard Konopka of Windsor, Michael Blake of Bristol, Jesse Blake of Terryville and Matthew Blake of Wellington, Colo.; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, James Frederick Blake.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at Plymouth Congregational Church. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Plymouth Congregational Church Book of Remembrance, 10 Park St., Plymouth, CT 06782.

Thomas G. Buonocore

SOUTHINGTON -- Thomas G. Buonocore, 79, of 1033 South Main St., Plantsville section of Southington died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003 after a long illness. He was the beloved husband for 55 years of Mary (Triano) Buonocore.

Born Aug. 6, 1923 in New Haven, the son of the late Sebastian and Maria (Esposito) Buonocore. He was a U.S Army Veteran of World War II, serving as Sergeant with the 3rd Army 427 Medical Battalion. He received the Victory Medal for Service, Good Conduct Medal and European Theatre Service Medal with 5 battle stars. He was a 25 year veteran of the Southington Police Department retiring as Sergeant in 1972. Mr. Buonocore was a founder and member of St. Aloysius Church and it's Mens Club. He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 72, a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus, and Past President of the Southington Police Benevolent Association as well as the CT Police Association.

In addition to his wife, he was the devoted father of Tom Buonocore and his wife, Linda of Newington and Anita and her husband, Richard Carle of Maine; treasured grandfather of Jessica and her husband, John Giberti, Nathan Carle and his wife, Rebecca, Kristin, Michael and Laura Buonocore, cherished great-grandfather of John G. and Joshua Giberti; a brother, Henry Buonocore of Southington; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. J. Pendleton and Father John Blanchfield of their kindness and compassion.

The funeral will be held on Thursday at 10:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington to St. Aloysius Church at 11 a.m. for a Mass of Christian burial. Burial with military honors will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Aloysius Church, 254 Burritt St. Plantsville, CT 0647.
