George C. Latham Sr.

MERIDEN -- George C. "Bud" Latham Sr., of 59 Westerly Terrace, Meriden, died Thursday, June 12, 2003, at the age of 73, after a brief illness at Masonic Home in Wallingford.

He was born in Lyme and lived in Meriden most of his life. He owned George's Sunoco on East Main St., for 15 years before working for Southwick and Meister as a machinist for the last 15 years.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Latham; a son and daughter-in-law, George C. and Alison Latham of Middletown; a daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Steven Carter of Meriden; a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Franklin Hull of East Hampton; a son, George Irving Latham of Norwich; several nieces and nephews; he was Papa to six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Monday, June 16, at 10 a.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, with the burial with military honors to follow at State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown. Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours at the funeral home Sunday, June 15, from 4 to 7 p.m. Contributions in his memory may be made to the American Lung Association, 45 Ash St., East Hartford, CT 06108.

Margaret Shea

CHESHIRE -- Margaret (Daley) Shea, 92, of E. Mitchell Ave., passed away in Cheshire Wednesday, June 11, 2003. She was the wife of the late Edward A. Shea.

Margaret was born in New Haven, July 4, 1910, daughter of the late John J. and Lillian (Dwyer) Daley. She had worked at the New Haven Clock Co., and retired in 1974 after 20 years as a Switchboard Operator for New Haven City Hall.

Beloved mother of Susan (Shea) Hanover and her husband, Walter; grandmother of Walter Edward Hanover and his wife, Susan, Kerry (Hanover) Pelletier and her husband, Randall; great-grandmother of Zachery James Hanover, Alexandra Lyn Pelletier and Paige Elizabeth Pelletier, all of Cheshire; also survived by a sister-in-law, Dorothy Daley of Hamden; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, John J. Daley; and sisters, Alice Chamberlain, Lillian McDermott, Mary Lyons and Virginia Bazevich.

The funeral from Sisk Brothers Funeral Home, 3105 Whitney Ave., Hamden, Saturday at 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. Thomas Beckett Church, Cheshire. Burial in St. Lawrence Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to Cheshire Senior Center Membership Association, 240 Maple Ave., Cheshire, CT 06410.

Philip J. Jagielski

OCALA, Fla. -- Philip J. Jagielski, 86, of 9633-D SW 83Terrace, Ocala, Fla., formerly of Valley View Drive, Meriden, husband of Anna (Dudek) Jagielski, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at home after a long illness.

Philip was born in Bridgeport on July 26, 1916, a son to the late Stanley and Sophie (Bykowski) Jagielski. Prior to his retirement he was employed for Pratt & Whitney for 25 years. He was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church and Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ocala, Fla. Anna and Philip were married on Nov. 23, 1940 in St. Stanislaus Church.

In addition to his loving wife, Anna, he is survived by a brother-in-law and his wife, Thomas and Anne Dudek; a sister-in-law, Helen Dudek; nieces, Diane Dyer, Joanne Dudek and Nancy Dudek; a grandniece, Kristy Dyer; grandnephew, Jason Dyer and his wife, Helen. He was predeceased by his loving daughter, Janice Jagielski.

Calling hours will take place Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian burial will take place on Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Church will the Rev. Edmond Nadolny officiating. Burial to follow at St. Stanislaus Cemetery. The Szymaszek-Taylor Funeral Home, 189 East Main St., Meriden.

Herta M. Kirschmann

MERIDEN -- Herta Maria Schwab Kirschmann, 82, died June 5, 2003, at the Palliative Care Center of Hartford Hospital six weeks after heart surgery.

Born in Vienna Austria, she was the loving daughter of the late Maria and Anton Schwab. After World War II, she immigrated to the United States with her young son, and in December of 1946, she married Paul Kirschmann of Meriden. The couple had four more children and lived in Meriden throughout their married life. After the death of her husband in 1979, Mrs. Kirschmann moved to Middletown, where she lived an independent life. Mrs. Kirschmann's hobbies included knitting, crocheting and rug hooking. She enjoyed swimming at the shore as well as traveling in the U.S. and abroad. She loved listening to the music of Johann Strauss and other Viennese composers. She was an avid reader, interested in current events, and had strong political opinions. An animal lover, Mrs. Kirschmann was especially fond of dogs, particularly German shepherds. Her guinea pig, Mitzie, was a constant companion during the last year of her life. In addition to being a loving mother to her five children, Mrs. Kirschmann was a meticulous housekeeper, an excellent cook, and a dedicated and hard-working employee of several local companies and institutions, including International Silver Co., First National Stores, and the State of Connecticut at Long Lane School. She had a cheerful, generous fun-loving nature and a strong spirit.

Mrs. Kirschmann is survived by three sons, Peter Kirschmann of Marion, Mass., Harry Kirschmann of Charlotte, N.C., and Paul Kirschmann of Meriden; and two daughters, Linda Richards of Springfield, Ohio and Ingrid Dubuc of Pawtucket, Mass. She will be much missed by her nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are private.

Margaret Shea

David R. Tartaglia Sr.

WALLINGFORD -- David R. Tartaglia Sr., 82, of Bayberry Drive, Wallingford, died Wednesday June 11, 2003, in the Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Born in Wallingford, June 5, 1921, a son of the late Leonardo and Jennie Freschi Tartaglia, he had been a lifelong Wallingford resident. He had been employed by the Allegheny-Ludlum Steel Co., in Wallingford, for over 30 years until his retirement. He was an avid fisherman and gourmet cook and a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church.

A loving father and grandfather, he was actively involved with the activities of his family and their friends. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Lynda T. and Thomas H. Etkin of Bethany; his son and daughter-in-law, David R. Tartaglia Jr. and Cynthia A. Tartaglia of Terryville; his six grandchildren, Kate, Chris, Brandon, Brittany, Trevor and Truman; his two sisters, Marianna Tartaglia and Rose (Mrs. James) Fazzino, both of Wallingford; his two brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Connie Tartaglia of Wallingford and Leonard and Barbara Tartaglia of Columbia, CT.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Frank Tartaglia and Albert P. Tartaglia Sr.

His family will receive relatives and friends in The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford Friday from 9 to 9:45 a.m. when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m.. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be sent to the American Diabetes Association, 300 Research Parkway, Meriden, CT, 06450.

Gordon J. Tassmer

WALLINGFORD -- Gordon J. Tassmer, 74, of the 656 East Center St., died peacefully Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at the Masonic Healthcare Center after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the husband of Lorraine Borghi Tassmer.

He was born in Wallingford, March 21, 1929, a son of the late Arthur Andrew and Jane Gadd Tassmer. Until his retirement, he was a master silversmith at the Yalesville Silver Company. Mr. Tassmer was an avid hunter and fisherman all his life.

In addition to his wife of 55 years, he is survived by a three sons, Gordon A. Tassmer of Meriden, Paul E. Tassmer of Rocky Hill and Robert J. Tassmer and his wife, Christine of Wallingford; a daughter, Kathryn Perrin and her husband, Charles of Spotsylvania, Va.; a sister, Evelyn Nitz of Wallingford; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Friends and relatives are invited to Lorraine's home at 656 East Center St., Apt. E311, Wallingford on Friday at 2 p.m. to celebrate his life. Burial will be private. The B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm St., Wallingford, is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy W. Atkins

MERIDEN -- Dorothy W. Atkins, 83, of 97 Camp St., Meriden, widow of William Atkins, died Monday, June 9, 2003, at home.

Born in Merrill, Maine, a daughter of the late Frank and Ruby (Garcelon) Corneil, she lived in Meriden for many years.

She leaves two sons, Lance M. White of Valrico, Fla., and Patrick B. White of Washburn, Maine; two daughters, Lynn M. Bowling of Arlington, Texas, and Mary T. Gibson of Wallingford; a brother, Philip Corniel of Oakfield, Maine; two sisters, Marion Willard of Middleboro, Mass., and Phyllis Ziemke of Neenah, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are private. There are no calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. DuPont Funeral Home, 25 Bellevue Ave., Bristol is in charge of arrangements. Donations may be made to the Oakfield Railroad Museum, P.O. Box 62, Oakfield, ME 04763.

Earl L. Johnson

MERIDEN -- Earl LaGrove Johnson, 92, beloved husband of the late Grace (Kamens) Johnson, died Monday, June 9, 2003, at Masonic Healthcare Center in Wallingford.

Earl was born in Meriden, son of the late William E. and Eliza (Dudley) Johnson, and was a lifelong resident. Before his retirement, he was a sales executive with various food manufacturers and food brokers. He was a member of the Meridian Lodge No. 77 AF & AM, Meriden, a 70-year member and past master councilor of the Meriden Chapter Order of DeMolay and past state senior councilor in 1931. He was invested with the DeMolay Legion of Honor in March 1931, was a founder and past grand commander of the Charles M. Gerdiner Preceptory Legion of Honor in Connecticut in 1937, and past chairman of the advisory council, Meriden Chapter Order of DeMolay.

Earl is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia J. and Walter "Doc" Russell of Ludlow, Vt., formerly of Windsor, Karen and Charles Audette of Southport, N.C., and Prudence and Henry Kamerzel of Naugatuck; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, Earl was predeceased by two brothers, Dudley C. Johnson and Harold E. Johnson; and two sisters, Lucy Nankervis and Helen C. Black.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 13, 10 a.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 164 Hanover St., Meriden, with Rev. Perry L. Beaver officiating. Burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Meriden. His family will receive friends on Thursday, June 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Beecher & Bennett-Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Avenue, Meriden, with a Masonic Service at 7:30 p.m. by Meridian Lodge No. 77 AF & AM of Meriden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 164 Hanover St., Meriden, CT 06451. Carmon Windsor Funeral Home has care of arrangements.
