Philip B. Gerson

Philip B. Gerson, a Stamford resident, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001 at Greenwich Hospital. He was 35.

He died of cancer, according to his family.

Born Sept. 24, 1965, in Tarrytown, N.Y., he was a son of Robert Gerson of Tarrytown and the late Sandra Gerson.

Mr. Gerson attended public schools in Tarrytown. He was a member of Dad's Club, the Cub Scouts, the Boy Scouts, his school bands and the Sleepy Hollow High School tennis team.

In Stamford, he coached his son's Little League baseball team.

He graduated with honors from Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y., and Boston University School of Law. He was an elected member of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society, and received the American Jurisprudence Award from Boston University.

Mr. Gerson was an associate attorney with the law firm of Rosenman & Colin in New York City.

He is survived by his wife, Beth Gerson of Stamford; a son, Timothy Gerson of Stamford; and a daughter, Laura Gerson of Stamford.

There are no calling hours.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001 at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford.

Burial is private.

Memorial donations may be made to Center for Hope, 590 Post Road, Darien, CT 06820.

Arthur William Newbould Jr.

Arthur William Newbould Jr. of Wilton, a former Stamford resident, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001 at Wilton Meadows Care Center. He was 86.

He died of natural causes, according to his family.

Born May 14, 1914, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a son of the late Arthur W. and Helen Sullivan Newbould.

Before retiring in 1981, Mr. Newbould sold construction products for various cement and construction companies in New York and Connecticut.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was a member of the Concrete Specifications Institute in New York City, the American Legion, the Spartan Club in Stamford, Knights of Columbus and the New York Athletic Club.

He is survived by a son, Bill Newbould of Malvern, Pa.; two daughters, Barbara Geneve of New Milford and Bettye Ragognetti of Wilton; a brother, E.J. "Jack" Newbould of Alexandria, Va.; and six grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Elinor McDermott; and his second wife, Anna Ambrosio.

There are no calling hours.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001 at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 229 Danbury Road, Wilton.

Burial is private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Fairfield County Chapter, 607 Main Ave., Norwalk, CT 06851.

Bouton Funeral Home, 31 W. Church St., Georgetown, is handling arrangements.

Daniel DeCausey

Daniel DeCausey, a longtime Stamford resident, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001 at Courtland Gardens in Stamford. He was 63.

He died of respiratory failure, according to his family.

Born Aug. 17, 1937, in Shirley, S.C., he was a son of the late Joseph DeCausey and Eugenia Wilson Duncan.

Mr. DeCausey worked as a mechanic at Clairol for 34 years. He was a member of Bethel AME Church in Stamford.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Bryant DeCausey of Stamford; four sons, Daniel DeCausey Jr., Darrell DeCausey, Stacey DeCausey and Brian DeCausey, all of Stamford; three daughters, Tanjia DeCausey of Fall River, Mass., Inez DeCausey-DeBio of North Providence, R.I., and Monretha D. Sinclair of Stamford; a brother, Eugene Decoster of Raleigh, N.C.; three stepbrothers, Lacey Duncan and Frank Duncan, both of Scotia, S.C., and Walter Duncan of Pineland, S.C.; a stepsister, Lila M. Heyward of Scotia; eight grandchildren; and an aunt, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001 at Bethel AME Church, 150 Fairfield Ave., Stamford.

A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001 at the church. The Rev. Winton Hill III will officiate.

Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery in Stamford.

Downer Funeral Home, 31 Stillwater Ave., Stamford, is handling arrangements.

Frances Phinney

Frances Phinney, a Stamford resident, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2001 at Richard L. Rosenthal Hospice Residence in Stamford. She was 82.

She died of lung and stomach cancer, according to her family.

Born May 15, 1918, in Westport, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Melvin and Abbe Phinney.

Ms. Phinney worked in public relations for CBS.

She was predeceased by a brother, Harding Walker Phinney.

There are no calling hours.

A memorial service will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001 at Union Memorial Church, 58 Church St., Stamford.

Burial is private.

Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford, handled arrangements.

Jerry J. Uva

Jerry J. Uva, a lifelong Stamford resident, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001 at Stamford Hospital. He was 83.

He died of natural causes, according to his family.

Born Dec. 5, 1917, in Stamford, he was a son of the late Pasquale and Dolorata M. Coppola Uva.

Mr. Uva owned several businesses, including a retail liquor store, A.J.'s Bottle Shop in Stamford, which he operated for 19 years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Stamford and the National Council for Senior Citizens.

He is survived by his wife, Caroline C. Russo Uva of Stamford; a daughter, Dolores M. Bartholomew of Palm City, Fla.; a son, Anthony J. Uva of Hartford; and four grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Theodore Uva and Anthony Uva; and three sisters, Domenica Faugno, Philomena Merole and Michelina Santoro.

Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001 at Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford.

A procession will leave the funeral home at 9:50 a.m. and proceed to Sacred Heart Church, 37 Schuyler Ave., Stamford, for a Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 a.m.

Burial will follow in Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien.

Joyce A. Flanagan

Joyce A. Flanagan, a lifelong Stamford resident, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001 at Stamford Hospital. She was 67.

She died of heart failure, according to her family.

Born July 25, 1933, in Stamford, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Mabel Tunks Gerke.

Mrs. Flanagan was a pharmacists' assistant at Grade A Pharmacy. She was a member of The Daughters of the Nile.

She is survived by her husband, James H. Flanagan of Stamford; a daughter, Linda Flanagan Johnson of Stamford; a son, James Flanagan of Stamford; and a granddaughter.

She was predeceased by a son, Michael James Flanagan.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001 at Fairfield Memorial Park in Stamford.
