David W. MacDowell
BLOOMFIELD — David W. MacDowell, 51, died Thursday, Nov. 26, 1998, in Simsbury after a courageous battle with cancer.
David was born in Milford and was a resident of Enfield for 20 years before moving to Bloomfield. He was employed by the Internal Revenue Service as a revenue agent for 30 years. David was also a U.S. Navy Vietnam veteran. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Enfield and a member of the Men's Golf League at Cedar Knob Golf Course in Somers. David touched the lives of all who knew him in a very special way.
He was the beloved husband of Dolores (Arcari) MacDowell of Bloomfield. David is also survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Kimberly and Ken Jobbagy and Kerri MacDowell, all of Bristol; five brothers and sisters-in-law, John MacDowell of Florida, Alan and Florence MacDowell of Southington, Gene and Linda MacDowell of Plainville, Paul MacDowell, Philip and Barbara MacDowell, both of Southington; his mother-in-law, Alda Arcari of Wethersfield; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Jack Jordan of Charlotte, N.C. David was predeceased by his mother and father, Elmore and Marjorie (Bray) MacDowell; a stepmother, Arlene (Diuilio) MacDowell; and his father-in-law, Thomas Arcari; and two brothers, Thomas and Raymond MacDowell. David will also be sadly missed by his many friends, especially his buddy and golf partner, Jim Lamond.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Nov. 30, 1998 at 10 a.m. in the United Methodist Church, 41 Brainard Road, Enfield, CT. SOUTHINGTON — Josephine (Mongillo) Maiorano, 82, of 46 Lucy Court, died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, at Bradley Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Pasco Maiorano.
Born May 8, 1916, in Southington, daughter of the late Anthony and Michaelina (Fiorello) Mongillo. She was a parishioner of St. Thomas Church.
Mrs. Maiorano was a devoted mother and leaves a loving family; a son, Patrick J. Maiorano of Southington; three daughters, Florence and son-in-law, Alan MacDowell, Janice and son-in-law, Joseph Rosia, and Patricia and son-in-law, Robert Yorski; a sister, Antoinette Sabadosa, all of Southington; three grandchildren, Darryl Upson, Melissa MacDowell and Kim Yorski; and two great-grandsons, Ryan and Adam.
The funeral will be held Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. from DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., to St. Thomas Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be at St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be Monday from 5 to 8 p.m.
Leslie C. Mercer
CHESHIRE — Leslie C. Mercer, 77, of 50 Old Towne Road, died Thursday, Nov. 26, 1998, in the MidState Medical Center, Meriden, after a brief illness.
Born in New Haven, June 6, 1921, he was the son of the late Miles L. and Anna M. Vetterman Mercer and was a resident of Hamden for many years, moving to Meriden and then residing in Cheshire for the past 15 years. Before his retirement in 1987, he was a model gun-making engineer for the Marlin Firearms Co. of North Haven for 10 years. Previous to that, he was a gun assembler for the Winchester Corporation of New Haven for 19 years and then was a model maker and production engineer for the High Standard Corporation, formerly of Hamden, for 18 years. A 1940 graduate of New Haven College, he was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II, and was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Assn., Chapter 27 of Meriden. He was a member of the Good Sam Club, the Family Motor Coach Assn., the Loners on Wheels and the Cheshire Senior Center.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Lori A. and Bill Anderson, both of Danbury; a son, John M. Mercer of Colliersville, Tenn.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren
Friends may call at the Hamden Memorial Funeral Home, 1300 Dixwell Ave., Hamden, Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m., with services at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. Burial will be private in Evergreen Cemetery, New Haven.
Eleanor I. Mierzejewski
MERIDEN — Eleanor I. Mierzejewski, 85, formerly of 80 Hanover St., died on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1998, at Westfield Care & Rehab Center in Meriden after a lengthy illness.
Born in Windber, Pa., on June 21, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Steven and Ann (Krygier) Mierzejewski. She was a longtime resident of New Haven before moving to Meriden. Miss Mierzejewski was employed for many years at Whitney Blake in Hamden, where she was active in league bowling.
Miss Mierzejewski is survived by three sisters, Rose Mitoraj and Stella Bakaj, both of Meriden; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Chester and Lois Mierzejewski of Cheshire and Wallace and Marion Mierzejewski of Berlin, Conn.; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Walter Mierzejewski.
The funeral and burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. If desired, contributions in her memory may be made to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden.
Robert H. Perkins Jr.
LEEDS, Ala. — Robert H. Perkins Jr., 65, formerly of Meriden, Conn., husband of Gay Nell McMahon Perkins, died on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1998 at the Medical Center East in Birmingham, Ala.
Born in Meriden, he was the son of the late Robert H. Sr. and Eleanor Ives Perkins. Prior to his retirement, he was employed at Cather Publishing Co. and for several years at the Meriden Record Journal.
Besides his wife, he leaves four sons, Robert III and Richard, both of Branford, Conn.; Mark of Georgia, Roger of Alabama; and one daughter, Rochelle, also of Alabama; one brother, Edward of Durham, Conn.; a sister, Janis Duffy of Meriden; three stepdaughters; one grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
The memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at the Kilgroe Funeral Home in Leeds, Ala. Interment will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, also in Leeds.
Denis J. Pouliot
MERIDEN — Denis J. Pouliot, 42, of 92 Farm Hill Road, South Meriden, died suddenly on Thursday, Nov. 26, 1998, at his home.
Born in Magog, Quebec, Canada, on Oct. 29, 1956, he was the son of Armand J. and Rita (Pellerin) Pouliot. Mr. Pouliot had lived in Meriden for most of his life and was a graduate of Platt High School. He was employed by Cuno Manufacturing Co. for 23 years. He was a parishioner of Holy Angels Church and a member of the Meriden Ski Club.
Besides his parents, he is survived by a special friend, Debbie Cooper of Meriden; and by several aunts, uncles and cousins.
The funeral will be held on Monday at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., and at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church, South Meriden. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Lillian B. Sawicki
MERIDEN — Lillian B. Sawicki, of 408 Crown St., died on Thursday, Nov. 26, 1998, at MidState Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
Born in Wallingford on Oct. 29, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Stella (Spirida) Sawicki and had been a Meriden resident for most of her life. Miss Sawicki had attended local schools and was employed by New Departure-Hyatt Bearing Div. of General Motors for many years and had to retire due to severe arthritis. She was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church.
Miss Sawicki is survived by one sister, Eleanor Tomczuk of Meriden; one brother, Conrad J. Sawicki of Meriden; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday at St. Stanislaus Church. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons, 88 East Main St., Meriden.
Dorothy E. Thomas
MERIDEN — Dorothy E. Thomas, of 39 Parkway Place, widow of Albert A. Thomas, died on Friday morning, Nov. 27, 1998, at Westfield Care & Rehab Center in Meriden after a brief illness.
Mrs. Thomas was the daughter of the late Conrad J. and Martha T. (Bucholz) Laskoske.
She is survived by three nieces, Christine Peczynski, Kathleen Chilone and Marge Laskoske. She is also survived by Richard Landino, husband of the late Bette Ann Landino. Mrs. Thomas was predeceased by two brothers, Lawrence J. and Vincent C. Laskoske; and by a niece, Betty Ann Landino.
The funeral will be private and burial will take place at the State Veterans Cemetery
in Middletown. There will be no calling hours. A memorial Mass will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden.
Lois H. Till
MANCHESTER — Lois H. (Greenhouse) Till, 72, of Parker Street, wife of Edward T. Till, died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, at Manchester Memorial Hospital.
Born in Meriden, Feb. 15, 1926, she had resided in Manchester since 1956. She retired in 1992 as a ward secretary for Victorian Heights Nursing Home and was employed there for over 20 years. She was a member of Second Congregational Church.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Till is survived by a son, Thomas E. Till of Manchester; two daughters, Linda Till of Manchester and Donna Trott and her husband, Kenneth of Amston; her twin sister, Muriel Zimmer of Meriden; and three grandchildren, Eric, Shelby and Tyler.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at 11 a.m. at Second Congregational Church, 385 North Main St., Manchester. Burial will be in East Cemetery. Friends may call Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St., Manchester.
