Brace B. Foster

Brace B. Foster, a New Canaan resident, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001 at Norwalk Hospital. He was 72.

He died of natural causes, according to his family.

Born Aug. 14, 1928, in Stamford, he was the son of the late F. Beardsley and Marian Swayze Foster.

Mr. Foster was a retired advertising director for the Taylor Wine Co. He was a member of the New Canaan Field Club and the Senior Men's Club of New Canaan.

He graduated from Kent School in 1947 and Dartmouth College in 1951. He served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by his wife, Gillian R. Foster of New Canaan; a son, Graham B. Foster of Darien; two daughters, Deirdre V. Foster of San Francisco and Belinda L. Foster of New Canaan; a sister, Barbara F. Gaulocher of Greenwich; a grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Services are private.

Memorial donations may be made to the New Canaan Ambulance Corps, South Avenue, New Canaan, CT 06840.

F. Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main St., New Canaan, handled arrangements.

Harold L. "Spike" Smythe

Harold L. "Spike" Smythe, a resident of Carmel, N.Y., died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001 at Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel. He was 90.

He died of natural causes, according to his family.

Born Oct. 23, 1910, in New Rochelle, N.Y., he was the son of the late I. Lennox and Edith Clark Smythe.

He was an education consultant in the field of radiology. He worked for Machlett Laboratories in Stamford.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Hope Huron Smythe of Carmel; and two cousins.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Feb. 3, 2001 at Adams-Cordovano Funeral Home, 15 Church St., Carmel.

A memorial service will be at 8 p.m. today, Feb. 3, 2001 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Kent Volunteer Fire Department, Route 301, Carmel, NY 10512.

Marie Le Fevre Treece

Marie Le Fevre Treece of Newmarket, N.H., a former longtime Stamford resident, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001 at home. She was 66.

She died of breast cancer, according to her family.

Born Aug. 27, 1934, in New York City, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Grace Oesterma Cassotto.

Mrs. Treece was raised in Yonkers, N.Y. She was a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology and Design in New York City. In her early career, she was a dress designer and a fashion buyer for Gimbel's. She later spent many years in the craft industry. She owned and operated Crafts End retail stores in Norwalk and White Plains, N.Y. She was a designer, teacher, demonstrator and author. She was a board member and held national offices in the Society of Craft Designers.

Mrs. Treece was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church and a former longtime member of the Roxbury Swim and Tennis Club and Newcomers/Suburbanites of Stamford.

She is survived by her husband, Tom Treece of Newmarket; a son, Donald Le Fevre Jr. of Norwalk; a stepson, Brian Treece of Durham, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Hilary Treece of Santa Cruz, Calif.; two sisters, Jeanne Imor of Yonkers and Grace Cassotto of Long Beach, Calif.; and a brother, James Cassotto of Yonkers.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Donald Le Fevre Sr.

Calling hours will be 2:30 to 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, in the vestibule of St. Leo's Catholic Church, 24 Roxbury Road, Stamford.

A memorial Mass will follow at 4 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Carl and Dorothy Bennett Cancer Center at Stamford Hospital, 128 Strawberry Hill Ave., Stamford, CT 06902; or Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Marion "Red" O'Brien

Marion "Red" O'Brien of West Haverstraw, N.Y., a former Stamford resident, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001 at home. She was 71.

She died of a heart attack, according to her family.

Born Nov. 9, 1929, in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Morrissey.

Mrs. O'Brien lived in Stamford most of her life before moving to West Haverstraw.

She is survived by three sons, John O'Brien of West Haven, Herb O'Brien Jr. of Stamford and Curtis O'Brien of West Haverstraw; and 10 grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Herbert O'Brien Sr.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 7:45 a.m. Saturday, March 3, 2001 at Sacred Heart Church, 37 Schuyler Ave., Stamford.

Arrangements were made in West Haverstraw.

Burial is private.

Caroline L. Hatch

Caroline L. Hatch, a resident of New Port Richey, Fla., died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001 at Community Hospital in New Port Richey. She was 67.

She died of a heart attack, according to her family.

Born Sept. 27, 1933, in Stamford, she was the daughter of Violet Goglia Saumell of New Port Richey and the late Ramiro A. Saumell.

Mrs. Hatch was a salon manager and a homemaker.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Walter Hatch of New Port Richey; two daughters, Alexandra Apgar of East Haddam and Christina Hatch of Stamford; a brother, Raymond Saumell of Stamford; and a grandchild.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. today, Feb. 5, 2001 at Trinity Memorial Gardens, 12609 Memorial Drive, New Port Richey.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army, 432 Fairfield Ave., Stamford, CT 06902; or Habitat for Humanity, 1470 Barnum Ave., Bridgeport, CT 06610.

Helen Ann Wallace

Helen Ann Wallace, a longtime Wilton resident, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001 at home. She was 69.

She died of cancer, according to her family.

Born Sept. 25, 1931, in Rome, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late David F. and Grace Spargo McCarthy.

Mrs. Wallace was a 1953 graduate of Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y., where she earned a bachelor's degree in social studies.

She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Wilton, where she taught religious education in two programs, the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults and Confraternity of Catholic Doctrine. She was a member of the Our Lady of Fatima School Board.

She is survived by her husband, Air Force Col. John Thomas Wallace of Wilton; a son, John William Wallace of Norwalk; a daughter, Ann Grace Khan of Wilton; two brothers, James D. McCarthy of Orange and Thomas E. McCarthy of Bellevue, Wash.; a sister, Martha Jane Nichols of Munsville, N.Y.; and a grandson.

She was predeceased by a brother, David McCarthy.

Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001 at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Ave., Norwalk.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001 at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 229 Danbury Road, Wilton.

Burial will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Whittingham Cancer Center, Norwalk Hospital Foundation, 34 Maple St., Norwalk, CT 06856; or Mid-Fairfield Hospice Inc., P.O. Box 818, Norwalk, CT 06611.

Michael T. Duke

Michael T. Duke, a longtime Greenwich resident, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001 at home. He was 58.

He died of a heart attack, according to his family.

Born Dec. 30, 1942, in Chicago, he was the son of the late Charles and Nancy McShane Duke.

Mr. Duke was former president and chief executive officer of Volvo Finance North America in Montvale, N.J., and Greenwich-based Auto Shops on the Net.

He served in the U.S. Army Reserve Military Police during the Vietnam War.

He was a member of Greenwich Country Club and Eldorado Country Club in Indian Wells, Calif.

He is survived by his wife, Pamela Phillips Duke of Greenwich; three daughters, Colleen Duke and Christine Duke, both of Chicago, and Coreen Duke of Greenwich; and a son, Michael Duke Jr. of Chicago.

Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 5, 2001 at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch St., Greenwich.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001 at St. Agnes Church, 247 Stanwich Road, Greenwich.

Burial is private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Connecticut PGA Golf Foundation, 35 Cold Spring Road, Rocky Hill, CT 06067.
