Helen Marie Giovannucci,

a Stamford native, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000 in Richmond, Va. She was 93.

She died of natural causes, according to her family.

Born Sept. 1, 1906, in Stamford, she was a daughter of the late Giovanni and Teresa Giovannucci.

She attended Stamford public schools and the University of Michigan. She was a short story writer.

During World War II, she served as director of social services for the USO, serving throughout the world, including Japan and Alaska.

She is survived by a brother, Julius L. Giovannucci of Key West, Fla.; and two nieces and two nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Ada Hyden; and two brothers, Hugo "Gooch" Giovannucci and Guido Giovannucci.

There will be no calling hours.

A graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000 at St. John Cemetery in Darien. Burial will follow.

Bosak-Talboys Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford, is handling arrangements.

Helen Emma Muha of Stamford died Sunday,

Aug. 27, 2000 at Tandet Center for Continuing Care in Stamford. She was 101.

She died of natural causes, according to her family.

Born Jan. 23, 1899, in Glen Lyon, Pa., she was a daughter of the late John and Susan Surgent Barron.

Mrs. Muha was a homemaker and a charter member of St. Benedict Church in Stamford. She was active in many church organizations, including the Ladies Slovak Association, Branch 47, where she served as secretary and treasurer for more than 50 years. She was an honorary trustee of the Ladies Guild, a member of the Rosary Altar Society, AARP and the Stamford Council of Catholic Women.

She is survived by two sons, Edward L. Muha of Ohio and John Joseph Muha of Stamford; and five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, John Edward Muha, who died in 1969; two sisters, Anna Thomas and Alice Ruglis; four brothers, Andrew Barron, Michael Barron, John Barron and George Barron; and two granddaughters.

There are no calling hours.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, in St. Benedict Church, 1 St. Benedict Circle, Stamford.

Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery in Darien.

Gerald R. Bosak Funeral Home, 9 Pulaski St., Stamford, is handling arrangements.

Jerry McMillen,

a longtime Stamford resident, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000 at Stamford Hospital. He was 62.

He died of congestive heart failure, according to his family.

He was born Nov. 6, 1937, in Detroit.

Mr. McMillen moved to Stamford in 1980. He volunteered at Meridian House in Stamford and was an employee of Long Ridge Service Station in Stamford for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Carol McMillen of Stamford; a daughter, Lori Whited of LaBelle, Fla.; and one granddaughter.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000 at Meridian House, 929 Newfield Ave., Stamford.

Calling hours will follow.

John Theodor of Norwalk,

a former Stamford resident, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000 at Norwalk Hospital. He was 62.

He died of multiple organ failure, according to his family.

He was born Oct. 21, 1937, in Athens, Greece.

Mr. Theodor was self-employed.

He is survived by a son, a daughter and a sister, all of Greece.

Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 28, 2000 at Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford.

Burial will take place 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, in Woodland Cemetery in Stamford.

Judith S. Neely,

a Darien resident, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000 at home. She was 63.

She died of cancer, according to her family.

Born March 26, 1937, in Louisville, Ky., she was a daughter of Catherine Gerber Scheirich Hines of Louisville, and the late Henry Joseph Scheirich II.

For 25 years, Mrs. Neely ran a clothing design business, first called the Avid Seamstress and, later, Designs by Judy.

She lived in Darien for more than 30 years and was a member of the Cotton Club, the Junior League, the Pickwick Society of Greenwich and the Fairfield County Chorale in Westport. Last year, she was chairwoman for the 40th reunion of the Smith College Class of 1959.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by two daughters, Sabrina N. Peppet of Terrace Park, Ohio, and Jennifer Neely of New York City; a son, Jason Neely of Louisville; a sister, Catherine S. Tuggle of Waddy, Ky.; a brother, Henry Joseph Scheirich III of Louisville; and two granddaughters.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church on the Post Road in Darien.

Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Cancer Care Inc., 120 East Ave., Norwalk, CT 06851-5703.

Matilda McCafferty,

a 60-year Greenwich resident, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000 at The Nathaniel Witherell home in Greenwich. She was 90.

She died of natural causes, her family said.

Born Jan. 20, 1910, in Londonderry, Ireland, she was a daughter of the late George and Bridget Gillespie Lynch.

Mrs. McCafferty immigrated to the United States as a young woman, settling in Greenwich

She was a housewife and a longtime member of St. Mary Parish and of its Women's Guild. She was also a member of Glenville Seniors.

She is survived by her husband, Gerard McCafferty of Greenwich; four daughters, Sheila Cosgrove of Darien, Mary Lynn O'Shea of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and Moira Burke and Ursula Eagles, both of Cos Cob; 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a grandson, John J. Cosgrove Jr.; a sister, Mamie Costello; and a brother, James Lynch.

There are no calling hours.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000 at St. Mary Church, 178 Greenwich Ave., Greenwich.

Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery on North Street in Greenwich.

Memorial donations may be made to the Nathaniel Witherell Patient Trust Fund, 70 Parsonage Road, Greenwich, CT 06830, or to Greenwich Adult Day Care, 70 Parsonage Road, Greenwich, CT 06830.

Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch St., Greenwich, is handling arrangements.

Otilia Velez of Norwalk died Friday,

Aug. 25, 2000 at Norwalk Hospital. She was 84.

She died of natural causes, according to her family.

Born March 24, 1916, in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, she was a daughter of the late Clemente and Paula Velez.

She is survived by a son, Jorge Gonzalez Jr. of Norwalk; two daughters, Minerva Gonzalez of Stamford and Pura L. Gonzalez of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico; two sisters, Celcilia Velez of Yonkers, N.Y., and Carmen Velez of Utado, Puerto Rico; and 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 28, 2000 at the Baker Funeral Home, 84 S. Main St., Norwalk.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 29, in St. Jospeh's Church, 85 S. Main St., Norwalk.

Burial will take place in St. John's Cemetery, Norwalk.
