Bernard Daniel Skubel
Born in Middletown, CT on Feb. 13, 1926

Bernard D. Skubel, 83, husband of Pandora (Branciforte) Skubel, passed away on Sunday, May 10th at the JFK Hospital in Boynton Beach, FL. Born in Middletown, he was the son of the late Stanley and Louise (Kawjaski) Skubel.
Bernard was a resident of Cromwell and Boynton Beach, Fl where he and his wife would spend the winter. He was a member of St. John Church in Cromwell, was a Veteran of WWII serving in the US Navy where he was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was an avid sports fan, who enjoyed watching the Red Sox, Patriots and Celtics play. Bernard was a nice guy who was loved by all that knew him and was always more concerned about others than himself.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Raymond Skubel of Cromwell and Richard Skubel and his wife, Wannie and their daughter, Melissa who currently reside in Bangkok, Thailand; three brothers, Stanley Skubel and Joseph Skubel, both of Middletown and John Skubel of Meriden; two sisters, Mary Dickinson of Middletown and Dorothy Skubel of Clinton and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 15th at 9:00 am from the Cromwell Funeral Home, 506 Main St., Cromwell followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am at St. John Church, 5 St. John Court, Cromwell. Interment will follow in St. Sebastian Cemetery in Middlefield.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bernard's memory to the JFK Medical Center, Lauer Hospice Unit, 5301 South Congress Ave., Atlantis, FL 33462.

Jan Rosemary (Exner) Rebelo
Born in Hartford, CT on Jan. 1, 1956

Jan Rosemary (Exner) Rebelo, 53, of Middletown, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 12th at her sister's home. Born in Hartford, she was the daughter of Rose Louise (Brewer) Exner of Wethersfield and the late Dennis John Exner.
Jan lived in Middletown for over twenty years. She graduated from East Hartford High School and then went on to get her RN from Ona M. Wilcox School of Nursing in 1983. She was an active and devoted member of the Crossroads Church of God in Berlin. She had worked for Hartford Hospital, St. Francis Hospital, Middlesex Health Care Center, Chestelm Health and Rehabilitation and Metlife Insurance Company.
Besides her mother, she is survived by her loving sons, Louie D. A. Rebelo and John F. Rebelo, both of Middletown, to whom she devoted her life and love; her brother, Frank J. Exner and his wife, Shelley, of Lubeck, ME; her sister, Corinne "Pinky" Perra and her husband, John, of East Hampton; her former spouse and father of her children, Louis Rebelo of West Hartford; many nieces and nephews and loyal, loving friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 16th at 10:30 am at the Crossroads Church of God, 146 Hudson Street, Berlin with the Rev. Robert E Larson, Jr. officiating. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.
Friends may pay their respects on Friday evening, May 15th from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Doolittle Funeral Home, 14 Old Church Street, Middletown. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jan's memory to the Crossroads Church of God, 146 Hudson Street, Berlin, CT 06037.

Lillian Beatrice (Ballek) Molle
Born in New York on Aug. 3, 1930

Lillian Beatrice (Ballek) Molle, 78, beloved mother and friend, wife of the late Richard C. Molle, peacefully entered into eternal life on Thursday, May 14th at her home in East Haddam. Born in New York on August 3, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Beatrice Ballek.
While working on Wall Street, she met her husband, Richard, and in 1960 they wed at the First Church in East Haddam and built their lives in her beloved town. For more than 25 years, Lillian was employed by the town of East Haddam as the Community Development Coordinator. In addition, she served as the secretary for the Board of Finance and was active in many community groups. Her most enjoyment in her life was her family and her small town.
Lillian is survived by three daughters, Mary Seffrin and her husband, R. James, of New Jersey, Elizabeth Molle of East Haddam, and Patricia Stricker and her husband, Darin, of East Haddam. She will be missed dearly by her five grandchildren, Cristina, Maria, Benjamin, Jessica, and Sebastian, her true treasures. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Faith Card of Florida and numerous cousins and friends.
Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her daughter, Linda Marie Molle.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Monday, May 18th at 4:00 pm at the First Church of Christ Congregational, 499 Town Street, East Haddam followed by a reception at the home of Patricia and Darin Stricker. Following the wishes of Lillian, family and friends are asked to take a moment to treasure what is most important in their lives.
There will be no calling hours and interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations in Lillian's memory to the East Haddam Historical Society, 264 Town Street, Haddam, CT 06423.

Phyllis (Coleman) Riddick
Phyllis (Coleman) Riddick, 60, of Middletown, wife of the late Benjamin H. Riddick, passed away on Thursday, May 14th at home. Born in Middletown on March 10, 1949, she was the daughter of the late Mamie Feagin and the late William Coleman.
She lived all her life in Middletown and was employed with CL&P for several years.
Phyllis is survived by three daughters, Sheila (Penny) Riddick, Crystal Riddick-Little (husband-Michael), all of Middletown and Shelia Wright of Portsmouth, VA; four sons, Jarvis Riddick of Middletown, Tracy Riddick (wife-Robin) of Nashville, TN, Frazelle Riddick of Nashville, TN and Reginald Riddick (wife-Brenda) of Portsmouth, VA; her brother, David Coleman (wife-Cora) of Middletown; and two sisters, Judith Washington of New London and Ella Kate (husband-Richey) of Middletown.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 20th at 11:00am at Shiloh Baptist Church, 346 Butternut Street, Middletown with the Rev. Dr. W. Vance Cotten, Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery in Middletown.

Sebastian "Mickey" Nicholas Cannata
Born in Middletown, CT on Jan. 1, 1919

Sebastian "Mickey" Nicholas Cannata, 90, of Cromwell, loving husband of Lydia (Branciforte) Cannata for 68 years, passed away on Tuesday, May 19th at Hartford Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Middletown on January 1, 1919 to the late Nicholas and Francesca (Giardina) Cannata, he was the oldest son of nine children.
Mickey was an exceptionally hard worker who developed a plan to accomplish his lifelong dream of owning a successful restaurant and motor inn. After a partnership with his brothers-in law at the Lord Cromwell Grill on the Berlin Turnpike in Meriden, he and his wife, Lydia, built and managed the Lord Cromwell Restaurant and Motor Inn, and the Knights Inn, in Cromwell for many years until their retirement twenty-five years ago. Throughout his career in the hotel and restaurant fields, he was also a prominent residential developer in Middletown, Cromwell, and Cape Cod. He was a past member of the board of directors for the Connecticut Restaurant Association and the Connecticut Hotel and Motel Association. Mickey spent his retirement years in Clinton and wintered in Jupiter, Florida. One of his proudest accomplishments was earning his GED the first winter he spent in retirement.
Besides his loving wife, Lydia, he is survived by his three children, Suzanne Rutner and her husband, Alan, Rosemarie Mondani and her husband, Donald, and Michael Cannata and his finance, April Hudyma, all of Cromwell; his beloved grandchildren, Lisa and Lynn Mondani, Amy Bunton and her husband, Stuart, and Tracy Adib-Samii and her husband, Julio, and his great grandson, Alejandro. Mickey is also survived by two sisters, Lena Kalita of Middletown and Viola Bozzi of Portland and two brothers, Emanuel Cannata, of Middletown and Nicholas Cannata, of Portland and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by four sisters, Antoinette Spallone of Middletown, Anna Santavenere of Cromwell, Rose Filetti of Lawrence, Mass, and Helen Marino of Middletown.
The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks and gratitude for the wonderful care and compassion they received from Dr. Sharon Diamen, Dr. Steven Horowitz, and all the nurses and support staff at Hartford Hospital.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 26th at 9:00am at the Cromwell Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St. John's Church, 5 St. John Court, Cromwell with the Rev. Mitchell Sawicki officiating. Interment will follow in the family plot at St. Sebastian's Cemetery in Middlefield.
Friends and family may call at Cromwell Funeral Home, 506 Main Street, Cromwell on Monday evening May 25th from 6:00-8:00pm. Friends who prefer may make donations in Mickey's memory to the Cromwell Fire Department, Ambulance Division, P.O. Box 269, Cromwell, CT 06416.

Elwood Demond McHenry

Elwood Demond McHenry, 31, of Meriden, husband of Latasha L. (Weaver) McHenry, passed away on Thursday, May 21st. Born in Florence, South Carolina, he was the son of Elwood McHenry, Jr. of Owensboro, KY and Jessie Hyman McHenry of Pamplico, SC.
He is also survived by a daughter, Emira, and a sister, Segee Holley of Pamplico, SC.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 26th at 12 noon at Shiloh Baptist Church, 346 Butternut Street, Middletown with the Rev. Dr. W. Vance Cotten, Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery in Middletown.
Friends and family may call one hour before the service from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at the church.

Ellen "Puffin" Gates D'Oench
Born in New York, NY on Oct. 2, 1930

Ellen Gates D'Oench, "Puffin" died at her home on Coleman Road in Middletown on Friday, May 22nd at age 78. She was Curator Emerita of the Davison Art Center, Adjunct Professor of Art History Emerita, and a former trustee of Wesleyan University.
Mrs. D'Oench attended Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Connecticut, and interrupted her education at Vassar College to marry Russell "Derry" D'Oench and to raise their family, Peter, Ellen , Dodie, Russell, Toby, and Jennifer D'Oench. She completed her education at Wesleyan in 1973, graduating magna cum laude in the same class as her son Peter. She received a Ph.D. from Yale University in 1979 with her doctoral dissertation, Arthur Devis: Master of the Georgian Conversation Piece,
She organized or co-organized nationally traveling exhibitions, and wrote
catalogues on various artists, including Arthur Devis, Jim Dine, and Sylvia Plimack Mangold. Her book, "Copper into Gold": Prints by John Raphael Smith (1752-1812), was published in 1999 by the Yale University Press. Her courses at Wesleyan focused on topics related to the university's 20, 000 works on paper. Aided by gifts and by Friends of the Davison Art Center funds, she added about 5, 000 photographs and important prints to the collection. She was a member of the Print Council of America.
Mrs. D'Oench was the first woman to be elected to the board of an area bank, City Savings. In the '60s she served as treasurer of Homesteads, Inc., an organization that facilitated mortgages for low-income homeowners in the greater Middletown community. She was a trustee of Miss Porter's School, a board member of the Middlesex NAACP, and of the Greater Middletown Community Corporation, and a corporator of Middlesex Hospital. Many volunteer organizations sought her intellect and vision, and she served as residential chairman of the United Fund; on the Mayor's Committee for the Children's Library Annex of the Russell Library; and on the boards of the Middletown Family Service Community Council of the United Fund, the Junior Matinees in Middletown, and the Independent Day School in Middlefield. Puffin was one of the founders and a co-chairman of the Friends of the Davison Art Center and a devoted supporter for more than forty years.
She is survived by her children, Peter G. D'Oench of Cooper City, Florida; Ellen D. Ruimerman of Higganum, Connecticut; and Russell G. D'Oench III of New York City; as well as daughters-in-law Connie D. D'Oench and Tani H. Takagi; and Paul E. Ruimerman, son-in-law. She was predeceased by her daughter, Jennifer. Mrs. D'Oench is also survived by siblings Peter Gates, Arthur A. Houghton, III, Ada G. Patton, and Jonathan Gates; by five grandchildren; one great grandchild; and her devoted dog, Arthur.
There will be a memorial service at the Chapel, Wesleyan University, High Street, Middletown, on Sunday, May 31, at 1:00 p.m. Donations in memory of Ellen D'Oench may be made to the Friends of the Davison Art Center, 301 High Street, Middletown, CT 06457; and Middlesex County Community Foundation, Inc., 211 South Main Street, Middletown, CT 06457.
