Ruby E. Canning

Ruby E. Canning, a longtime Stamford resident, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000 at Mediplex of Darien. She was 89.

She died of natural causes, according to her family.

Born Feb. 13, 1911, in Zephyr, Ontario, Canada, she was a daughter of the late Julius W. and Edith Heise Rynard.

Mrs. Canning was a retired licensed practical nurse at Stamford Hospital, where she worked for 12 years. She received her L.P.N. diploma from J.M. Wright Technical School.

Mrs. Canning was a member of the Rosemary Chapter of the Eastern Star No. 43, a past member of Grace Evangelical Free Church, and a member of the First Congregational Church of Stamford.

She is survived by two sons, Keith E. Canning of Stamford and William H.W. Canning of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by her husband, John E. Canning; two brothers, Dr. William Rynard and Wilfred Rynard, and a sister, Mary Rynard Palmer.

Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, 2000 at Bouton & Reynolds Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000 at First Congregational Church of Stamford on Walton Place.

Burial will follow in Fairfield Memorial Park Cemetery in Stamford.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational Church of Stamford, Walton Place, Stamford, CT 06901; or Grace Evangelical Free Church, 241 Courtland Ave., Stamford, CT 06906.

Limette M. Doble

Limette M. Doble, a resident of Darien and Nantucket, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000 at her home in Darien. She was 72.

She died of cancer, according to her family.

Born March 15, 1928, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Charles R. Mehrings and Mary Ann Phillips-Mehrings.

Mrs. Doble graduated from Tufts College and received her master's degree in education at Western Connecticut State College. She taught mathematics at Mather Junior High School in Darien and at Stamford Catholic High School.

An accomplished artist, Mrs. Doble exhibited her oil paintings for many years in Darien and Nantucket.

She is survived by her husband, John E. Doble, of Darien and Nantucket; one son, William C. Doble of Essex Junction, Vt.; two daughters, Dr. Elizabeth Doble-Holby of Barrington, R.I., and Dr. Jennifer E. Doble-Check of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and five grandchildren.

Calling hours are 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, 2000 at Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien.

A private funeral service and burial will be held at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien. The Rev. Z. Ann Schmidt-Snyder will officiate. Another service will be held in Nantucket with the Rev. Ted Anderson officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to Explorer Post 53-Darien Emergency Medical Services, P.O. Box 2066, Darien, CT 06820; or to The Sconset Trust, P.O. Box 821, Siasconset, MA 02564.

James E. Johnson

James E. Johnson of Columbus, Ohio, a former Stamford resident, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000 at Arbor's East in Columbus. He was 72.

He died of natural causes, according to his family.

Born Jan. 31, 1928, in Cleveland, Tenn., he was a son of the late Elijah and Carrie Ella Johnson.

Mr. Johnson was a longtime member of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Columbus.

He worked at Bath and Body Works.

Mr. Johnson, a retired technical sergeant, served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars.

He was a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post 10446 Stamford and Post 3764 of Columbus. He also was a member of Retired Armed Forces Assoc. Chapter 2, Branch 1 and American Legion Post 690.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Eartha Porter Johnson of Columbus; a daughter, Sandra Cephas of Columbus; a son, James Johnson Jr. of Columbus; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Robert Leon Johnson, John Coleman Johnson and Kinzel Eugene Johnson; and a daughter, Cynthia Diane Johnson.

Calling hours are 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000 at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 2021 Cleveland Ave., Columbus.

A funeral service will follow at noon.

Burial will follow in Glen Rest Memorial Estates in Reynoldsburg, Ohio.

Wayne T. Lee Funeral Service in Columbus is handling the arrangements.

Frank S. Mitchell

Frank S. Mitchell of Venice, Fla., a former Greenwich resident, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000 at home. He was 85.

He died from complications of prostate cancer, according to his family.

Born March 24, 1915, in Greenwich, he was the son of the late Frank J. and Minerva Sprague Mitchell. He graduated from Greenwich High School and received a bachelor's degree in economics from The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Mitchell joined the FBI as a special agent in 1938 and became a supervisory agent, assistant inspector and member of the major case squad. After 14 years as an agent, he resigned and served as corporate vice president with the Thermix Corporation, Acrotec Corp. and Acrotherm, all in Connecticut. In 1966, he became vice president of Arnold Bakers Inc. in Greenwich.

He retired to Florida in 1977.

He was a past president and director of the Greenwich Kiwanis Club, a deacon of the Second Congregational Church, a member of the board of directors of the Greenwich Chamber of Commerce and a 50-year member of the Masons. He was a member of Acacia Lodge No. 85.

In Venice, Mr. Mitchell was a member of the High Twelve Club, the Venice Gardens Men's Golf Association, the Willow Springs Association and Trinity Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Village on the Isle Men's Club, Scholarship Committee and Residents' Auxiliary. In 1999, he chaired the resident gratuity fund. He also was a mentor with the Evan Squires Mentoring Club.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Martha Bridge Mitchell; two sons, Dr. John W. Mitchell of Lake Oswego, Ore., and Bruce A. Mitchell of Redmond, Wash.; a daughter, Nancy S. Lindstrom of Plano, Texas; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will he held Monday, Oct. 2, 2000 at the Village on the Isle Ester Lounge in Venice The Rev. Dr. Dean Dobson of Trinity Presbyterian Church will officiate.

Memorial donations may be made to the Village on the Isle Scholarship Fund, 900 S. Tamiami Trail, Venice, FL 34285; or to Trinity Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 4365 S.R. 776, Venice, FL 34293.

Jean C. Swan

Jean C. Swan, a Greenwich resident, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000 at Greenwich Hospital. She was 70.

She died of natural causes, according to her family.

Born March 26, 1930, in Cheshire, England, she was the daughter of the late Jack Harrison and Emily Charlick.

Mrs. Swan was a retired secretary for General Re in Stamford.

Educated in England, she moved to America in 1964. She was active for many years in the Friendly Visitor Program run by the Social Service Department of Greenwich.

She is survived by her husband, William Swan of Greenwich; and a brother, Bruce Charlick of England.

Calling hours are 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000 at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch St., Greenwich.

A service will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. James Coffey of First Lutheran Church of Greenwich will officiate.

Burial will be private.
