Jeffrey Peter McHugh, 42, of 161 Remus Road, Cheshire, left us suddenly on Monday, July 3, 2006. Born in Bronx, NY on July 15, 1963, he was the son of the late Albert and Barbara McQuillen McHugh. He was a graduate of Amity High School, CIT in West Haven and Gateway Community College. He worked for Echlin Inc. and Dana Corporation, and most recently as a claims representative for Conn Motor Club AAA. He is survived by his loving wife, Regina Polverari McHugh; two sons, Ryan & Matthew McHugh; and a brother, Michael McHugh of Winston-Salem, N.C.

Helen Thomas Marshall, 95, of Walden Green, Branford, formerly of Waterford, died peacefully June 28, 2006 in Norwich. She was the widow of James R. Marshall Jr. Mrs. Marshall was born in New Haven Sept. 3, 1910, daughter of the late John J. and Marianna Petrillo Thomas. She was a graduate of Hillhouse High School, New Haven Normal School and Eastern Conn. State Univ. She was a member of the group of school teachers who were instrumental in making kindergarten an integral part of the school system. She taught at West Side, Montville Center & Uncasville Schools in Montville and Jordan & Cohanzie Schools in Waterford. She took organ lessons at St Brendan’s Church in New Haven and sang in the choir there and at St. Mary, Star of the Sea in New London. During her retirement years, she volunteered as a piano player at New Haven Convalescent Center, Branford Senior Center, East Shore Adult Day Care Center and at Connecticut Hospice in Branford. She is survived by a son, James R. Marshall III of Norwich, a daughter, Ann Marshall Murphy of New Haven, and several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Edna Stadler.
Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Church, 70 Central Ave., Norwich, Friday morning at 11:00 AM. Calling hour one hour prior to the funeral from 10:00 to 11:00. Angelina (Julia) Gaudio, 93, formerly of Fairbanks, 355 Ferry St., New Haven, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2006 in Harborside Willows of Woodbridge. Miss Gaudio was born in New Haven Sept. 3, 1912, daughter of the late Frank Gaudio & Teresa Torello Gaudio Manzi. She worked as a sales lady for the former Edw. Malley Co. for 29 years, retiring in 1981. She was a member of Atwater Senior Citizens and will be remembered for the hand crafted gifts she created for those she cared for. She is survived by several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Agnes Nappi and Frances Ferrucci and a brother, Joseph Manzi.

Former Congressman Robert N. Giaimo, 86, who represented the Third District of Connecticut from 1959 to 1981, died Wednesday, May 24, 2006 in VA Hospital Center, Arlington, Virginia. He was the husband of Marion Schuenemann Giaimo, and was a resident of Arlington, VA and Boca Raton, FL.
Congressman Giaimo was born in New Haven, CT. Oct. 15, 1919, son of the late Rosario and Rose Scarpulla Giaimo. His parents were Italian immigrants and his father was founder of the Community Bank & Trust at Olive & Chapel Streets in New Haven, providing loans to other immigrants when other banks would not. Mr. Giaimo was a graduate of Fordham and the University of Connecticut Law School, where he met his wife, one of the first women to study law at UConn. He was a long time North Haven resident, where he was elected to the Board of Education in 1949, and later, served as a Selectman, before being elected to the 86th Congress in 1958. He served on the powerful House Appropriations Committee; rose to the chairmanship of the House Budget Committee and led efforts to establish the National Endowment for the Arts & Humanities. He served as an attorney in the United States Army during the latter stages of World War II, and, later, reached the rank of Captain in the Army Reserves. The federal building in New Haven is named in his honor. Beside his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Barbara Lee Koones of Potomac, MD. and a granddaughter, Tracy Elizabeth Phillips.

Angelina Mellilo Malafronte, 84, of 1799 Dublin Rd., Richmond, MA. died May 20, 2006 in Berkshire Medical Center, Pittsfield, MA. Mrs. Malafronte was the widow of Henry Malafronte and was a former resident of Porter St., New Haven. Born in New Haven Dec. 23, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Michael Mellilo & Josephine Cofrancesco Melillo. She has been a resident of Richmond, MA for the past 15 years. At one time, she worked as a book keeper for the former New Haven Lumber Co. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Parish and was an active member of Notre Dame High School Mothers Club. She is survived by 3 sons, Henry Malafronte Jr. of Richmond, MA.; Dr. Pasquale Malafronte of Lincoln, R.I. and Ralph Malafronte of Ft. Myers, FL.; and grandchildren, Tara, Raphael, Natalie, Francesca, Pasquale Jr., Halsey and Laken. She was predeceased by a sister, Mary Malafronte.

Marion Estelle Warren, 96, of 77 Third St., New Haven, died May 16, 2006 in St. Raphael’s Hospital. She was the widow of Alfred M. Warren. Mrs. Warren was born in New Haven Sept. 13, 1909, daughter of the late William & Nellie Eaton Lafo. She worked as a waitress in several downtown restaurants including Tasty Toasty, Grant’s Lunch Counter, Shartenberg’s Tea Room and Patricia’s. She is survived by 2 sons, Richard C. Warren of New Haven & retired N.H. firefighter Alfred E. Warren of North Haven; a daughter, Carol Houle of Clinton; 10 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren & 3 great great grandchildren.

John Spontino Jr., 68, of Orchard St., New Haven, died May 16, 2006 in The CT. Hospice, Branford after a short illness. Born in New Haven Sept. 2, 1937, he was the son of the late John Spontino Sr. & Julia Sasso Murgo. He was a graduate of Notre Dame High School, West Haven and proudly served in the US Air Force as an Airman Second Class. He worked for Carbonella & DeSarbo and for Columbus House, and was the former owner of the Highwood Bar & Grille. He is survived by a brother, Guy (Tanya) Spontino of Bluffton, S.C.; 2 sisters, Barbara Cervero of Shelton & Lori Bauer of West Hartford, 2 aunts, Madeline Pitts & Frances Candella; an uncle, Fred “Toots” Napolitano; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Elisa Bettarelli Silvestrini, 87, of 148 Folly Brook Lane, Manchester, formerly of 122 Willard St., New Haven, died May 7, 2006. She was the wife of the late Thomas E. Silvestrini. Mrs. Silvestrini, daughter of the late Gaetano & Aurora Grossi Bettarelli, was born in Smithmill, PA on Jan. 7, 1919. She was a Registered Nurse and worked in New Haven area hospitals for many years. She is survived by 1 daughter, Sharon A. Silvestrini of Manchester, with whom she resided; 2 sons, Robert T. & Gary J. Silvestrini, both of New Haven; 2 grandchildren, Elena & Alissa. She was predeceased by a brother, Guy Bettarelli and 4 sisters, Ann Bettarelli, Lola Pascale, Julie Ramadei & Adele Pavlovich.

Robert Louis LeClaire, 48, of 103 Old Nod Rd., Clinton, died at home May 1, 2006. Born in Providence, R.I. March 13, 1958, he was the son of Nancy LeClaire Boyd of New Haven and the late John LeClaire. He worked as a private contractor, and for the past 15 years was part owner in PBL Alterations. He served in the US Army. Beside his mother, he is survived by his step father, Thomas Boyd of New Haven; his significant other, Carol Templeman of Clinton and their son, Kenneth Michael LeClaire; another son, Robert LeClaire Jr. of Hamden; 2 daughters, Tiffany LeClaire of PA. & Kimberly LeClaire of FL.; 2 brothers, Jeffrey & Irving “Russell” LeClaire, both of New Haven; 3 sisters, Priscilla Jones & Geneva Lawhorn, both of New Haven and April LeClaire of FL.; 5 grandchildren, 3 nieces, 11 nephews and several aunts & uncles. He was predeceased by a brother, Steven T. LeClaire and his grandparents, Thomas & Evelyn Davis Preston and Harry & Viola LeClaire.

Mrs. DeCrosta, daughter of the late John & Antoinette Argosa Richitelli, was born Sept. 5, 1917 in East Haven. She is survived by 3 sons, Pasquale DeCrosta of West Haven, Benjamin DeCrosta Jr & John DeCrosta, both of East Hartford; 2 daughters, Marie Keppel of Coral Springs, FL. and Annette (George) Cofrancesco of East Haven; 2 sisters, Mary Wnek of East Haven & Catherine Acampora of Florida; 8 grandchildren & 10 great grandchildren. Joseph F. Piontek Jr., 93, of 1450 Whitney Ave., Hamden, formerly of 230 Treadwell St., died April 23, 2006 in Hamden Health Care after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of the late Leila Castles Piontek. Born in New Haven May 25, 1912, he was the son of the late Joseph F. and Anna L. Gruza Piontek. He attended the Renouard Training School for Embalmers in New York and was a licensed embalmer with the Celentano Funeral Home for 20 years. More recently, he worked as a supervisor in the Resource Unit of the Conn. Dept. of Social Services until his retirement. He is survived by a son, Gregory J. (Sandra) Piontek of North Haven; and 2 grandchildren, Christine Piontek of Brookline, MA. and Robert Piontek of North Haven. He was predeceased by 2 sisters, Helen P. Palaski and Marian P. Celentano.
