Sheila F. Higgins

Sheila F. Higgins, a former longtime resident of Greenwich, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000 at Brighton Gardens, an assisted living facility in Port Lucie, Fla. She was 94.

She died of natural causes, according to her family.

Born April 2, 1906, in Dumbarton, Scotland, she was a daughter of the late Thomas P. and Rosina Paul.

Mrs. Higgins worked for many years as the manager of the Greenwich Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop before retiring in 1971.

She was a member of the South Catherine of Siena parish in Greenwich and a volunteer at Hill House. She also volunteered for the Greenwich chapter of the American Red Cross and was a trip coordinator for the Greenwich AARP.

She is survived by a son, Michael V. Higgins Jr. of Greenwich; three daughters, Elinor H. Morgan and Sheila H. Heberling, both of Sebastian, Fla., and Renee M. Uva of Fairfield; two sisters, Jean Burns of Pontesbury, England; and Rena Paul of Dumbarton; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Michael V. Higgins Sr.; a brother, Thomas Paul; and two sisters, Marjorie Paul and Minnie McLaughlin.

Calling hours are 5 to 7 p.m. today, Nov. 12, 2000 at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch St., Greenwich.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 13, 2000 at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 4 Riverside Ave., Greenwich. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, North St., Greenwich.

Louis Landa

Louis Landa of Shelton, a former Greenwich resident, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000 at his home. He was 77.

He died from complications of a malignant brain tumor, according to his family.

Born March 5, 1923, in Greenwich, he was the son of the late Frank Anthony and Mary Ann Landa.

Mr. Landa served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He retired as field service manager for Cober Electronic Co. in Stamford, where he was employed for more than 19 years.

He was a member of the Valley Heart Club, the Greenwich Volunteer Fire Department, the Czechoslovakia Society of America and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Shelton Post No. 10466.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Smith Landa of Shelton; two daughters, Wendy Russell of Freeland, Mich., and Holly Albisser of San Bernardino, Calif.; three sons, Michael Landa of Chadds Ford, Pa., Jeffrey Landa of Washougal, Wash., and Craig Landa of Canton, Ga.; a stepson, Thomas Belfi of Mascadine, Ala.; two stepdaughters, Karen Lussier of Castrovalley, Calif., and Theresa Bernier of Norwalk; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Arthur Landa; and a sister, May Flood.

A memorial will be celebrated with military honors at a day and time to be announced.

Burial will be in South Portland, Maine.

Memorial donations may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 10466, c/o Guy Beardsley, 276 Leavenworth Road, Shelton, CT 06484.

Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton, is handling arrangements.

Helen M. Martello

Helen M. Martello, a Stamford resident, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000 at Stamford Hospital. She was 82.

She died of natural causes, according to her family.

Born June 3, 1918, in Stamford, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Rosaria Greco DeLuca.

Mrs. Martello was a homemaker. She also worked with her husband at Valencia Liquors in Glenbrook.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Dominick J. Martello Sr.; a son, Don J. Martello of Wallingford; and a brother, Robert "Gabe" DeLuca of Stamford.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Louis DeLuca, James DeLuca and Attilio DeLuca; and six sisters, Molly Pastore, Elizabeth DeLuca, Delia Pellini, Angie Margenot, Yolanda Casole and Rose Pangallo.

Calling hours will be 8 to 9 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000 at Lacarenza Funeral Home, 8 Schuyler Ave., Stamford.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000 at Sacred Heart Church, 37 Schuyler Ave., Stamford. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Darien.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Care, 1029 East Main St., Stamford, CT 06902.

Nunzio Salvatore

Nunzio Salvatore, a longtime Stamford resident, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2000 at Stamford Hospital. He was 85.

He died from complications of Alzheimer's disease, according to his family.

Born Nov. 26, 1914, in Minturno, Italy, he was the son of the late Carmine Salvatore and the late Angela Maria Terentino.

Mr. Salvatore lived in Stamford for 37 years. He was a tool and die maker at Norman Hoffman Bearings of Stamford for 15 years before retiring in 1973.

He is survived by three daughters, Marilena Rivera, Angela Salvatore and Vincenza Salvatore, all of Stamford; three sons, Carmine Salvatore, Mario Salvatore and Louis "Gino" Salvatore, all of Stamford; and four grandchildren.

Mr. Salvatore was predeceased by his wife, Amalia Vento Salvatore.

Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 12, 2000 at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford.

A procession will leave the funeral home at 9:20 a.m. Monday, Nov. 13, and head to St. Mary's Church, 566 Elm St., Stamford, for a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m.

Entombment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, North Street, Greenwich.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer's Disease Association, 607 Main Ave., Norwalk, CT 06851.

Charles A. Lowenthal Jr.,

a longtime Darien resident, died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000 at his home. He was 63.

He died of heart failure, according to his family.

Born April 12, 1937, in New York City, he was the son of the late Charles A. and Emma Petescola Lowenthal.

Before retiring, Mr. Lowenthal was a senior engineer with AT&T, where he worked for 34 years. After retirement, he was a consultant with IBM and MECA Software. He was a member of St. John's Church in Darien and an avid golfer and member of the Rye Golf Club.

He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Boyle Lowenthal of Darien; one daughter, Jenny Hale Lowenthal of Darien; one sister, Joan Grindley of Norwalk; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000 at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000 at St. John's Catholic Church in Darien.

Burial will be private.

Kathryn L. Black,

a Stamford resident, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000 at Smith House Health Care Center in Stamford. She was 86.

She died of complications from Alzheimer's disease, according to her family.

Born Nov. 21, 1913, in New York City, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Sarah Stauffer Watson.

Mrs. Black lived in Stamford for four years. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Louis H. Black Sr. of Stamford; one son, Louis H. Black Jr. of Darien; three sisters, Cecilia Gillan and Gloria Ryan both of Stamford, and Eleanor Doyle of Middletown, Pa.; four grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Black was predeceased by one son, John Black; three sisters, Margaret Lacroix, Frances Strykman and Ann Troutman; three brothers, William Watson, Frank Watson and James Watson; and one grandson.

Calling hours will be 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000 at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford.

A memorial service will follow at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be private.
