James E. Thornton,

James E. Thornton, 63, of Lewes died, after a courageous battle with cancer, Friday, May 19, 2006, in Harbor Health Care, Lewes.
Mr. Thornton served in the U.S. Army, earning the Overseas Bar, Good Conduct Medal and Vietnam Service Medal.
He was a past member of the B.P.O. Elks of Lewes. He also was a member of the Delaware County (Pa.) Vietnam Veterans of America, and of Amvets.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James T. and Anna F. (Blome) Thornton.
He is survived by a daughter and a son-in-law, Lorie and Sean Freas of Bethlehem, Pa.; a son, James T. Thornton of Louisa, Va.; and a sister and a brother-in-law, Betty A. and James Peters of Millsboro.
Services will be noon Tuesday, May 23, in Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call one hour earlier. The Rev. Robert Hudson will officiate.
Burial will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery

Frank R. Navalaney,
electrician
Frank R. Navalaney, 56, of Lincoln died, after a long illness, Thursday, May 18, 2006, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford.
Mr. Navalaney was born in Windber, Pa.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Vietnam.
He had been employed as a licensed electrician for Pepco in Washington, D.C., for 13 years, then had worked in the electrical department for Lowe’s in Lewes, as an electrical pro, before becoming disabled in 2003. He recently had moved to Lincoln.
Mr. Navalaney was a member of American Legion Post 28, Millsboro, and of the Polish Club of College Park, Md.
He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Navalaney.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary E. (Marvel) Navalaney; his mother, Margaret (Pollock) Navalaney of Burtonsville, Md.; two stepdaughters and two stepsons-in-law, Krystal and Robert Stratman, and Sherry Ann and Dale Collins, all of Milford; a stepson, John West of Milton; two sons, Michael Navalaney and Johnny Navalaney, both of Culpeper, Va.; a daughter and a son-in-law, Stacy and Robert Stultz of Dublin, Va.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mary Ann and Mike Jarvis of Glenn Dale, Md., and Janice Navalaney, and her companion, Creighton Glantz, both of Burtonsville; four stepgrandchildren, James B. Stratman, Dale Collins III, Brittany Lynn West and Andrew John West; and a granddaughter, Rebekah Navalaney.
Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, June 17 in his home.

Alicia Maria David,

Alicia Maria David, 39, of Milford, died after a short illness, Saturday, April 29, 2006, in Christiana Care-Wilmington Hospital.
Ms. David was born Sept. 13, 1966, in Philadelphia, daughter of Dr. Luis L. David, a local pediatrician, and the late Evelyn C. (Mathewson) David, who died in 2003.
She graduated from the University of Delaware Nursing School with a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
She had worked in the Neurological Intensive Care Unit at Christiana Care-Christiana Hospital, Newark, and as a staff nurse at St. Francis Hospital, Wilmington. She had just completed training to become a certified legal nurse consultant.
Ms. David was a fun-loving, free-spirited girl. She loved spending time together with her daughter and niece. She was an animal lover and had several pets. She enjoyed music, and loved to shop.
She is survived by a daughter, Amanda M. Donohue of Milford; her loving father, Dr. Luis L. David, of Milford; three sisters, Kathleen David and Eileen David, both of Milford, and Jennifer David of Newark; a niece, Lauren David; and a nephew, Christopher Yonek.
Mass of Christian burial was in St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Milford. Burial was in Holy Cross cemetery , Dover.

Robert O. Aller,
NASA administrator
Robert O. Aller, 76, of Rehoboth Beach, beloved husband, father and grandfather died on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. Mr. Aller was born on March 26, 1930 in Dayton, Ohio, son of the late Olen A. Aller and Carolyn R. (Lewis) Aller. He was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. in 1953 and was commissioned into the U.S. Air Force.
He served in the Air Force for 10 years. During that time, he served variously as a navigator on B-57 aircraft; as a graduate student at the University of Michigan; and at the Satellite Test Center in Sunnydale, Calif.
After discharge from the Air Force, Mr. Aller worked for NASA in Washington, D.C. on the manned space flight programs, and ended his 29-year career with them as a deputy administrator for the TDDRS program.
Mr. Aller and his wife lived in Bethesda, Md. for 29 years before relocating to Rehoboth Beach 13 years ago. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Rehoboth Beach.
Mr. Aller is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy (Rife) Aller; a son, Robert C. Aller and wife Colleen of West Chester, Pa.; 2 daughters: Cynthia Aller Thornett and husband J. Frederick of Bethesda and Carole Aller Brennan and husband Douglas F. of Camp Hill, Pa.; a sister: Iva Lou Smith and husband James of Dayton, Ohio; and nine grandchildren, Michele and Lyndsey Thornett, Christopher and Bridget Brennan; and Kelly, Erin, Kateland, Robert, and Brian Aller.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 27, at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 7 Bay Vista Road, Rehoboth Beach, with Pastor Donald Schaefer officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to The Lutheran Church of Our Savior Building Fund, 7 Bay Vista Road, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.
Joyce M. Beatson,
Legion auxiliary member
Joyce M. Booth Beatson, 78 of Wilmington and Millsboro passed away Saturday, May 20, 2006.
Mrs. Beatson was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post #28 in Millsboro, where she served one term as chaplain and two terms as membership chairman.
Joyce was preceded in death by her son, Jeffrey W. Booth; a granddaughter, Christine Booth; and her second husband, George Beatson.
She is survived by her children, Lynda Sparks and her husband, Paul, of Lewes, Kimberly Booth Zionkowski of Elkton, Md.; Edwin Booth III, and his companion, Tina Seversen, of New Castle; grandchildren, Jaime and Sean McElwee, Robert Johnson, Melissa, Sarah and Angela Booth; and three great-grandchildren, Sean McElwee Jr., Julian and Arlis Johnson. She is also survived by her niece, Angela Geoffrion; her former daughter-in-law, Sue Booth; and several stepchildren and step-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held Tuesday, May 23, from 6-8 p.m., at the McCrery Memorial Chapel, 3710 Kirkwood Highway at Duncan Road. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 24, at 11 a.m., at the funeral home. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

Dorothy A. McColgan, 82, of Severn, Md., formerly of Wilmington, died Saturday, May 20, 2006.
She was homemaker and a former member of St. John the Beloved.
Her husband, James; and her great-granddaughter, Zoë, preceded her in death.
She is survived by three children, daughter, Grace DiRocco and son Michael, both of Maryland, and a son, James of California. She is also survived by two sisters, Norma Young of Wilmington and Idella Rogers of Lewes; five grandchildren, Amy, Joël, Roxie, Mickey and Leslie; and two great-grandchildren, Rocco and Sophia.
Family and friends are invited to a funeral service Wednesday, May 24, at noon at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown roads, Wilmington. Calling hours will be after 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in All Saints cemetery.

Louis J. Shivone,
World War II veteran
Louis Joseph Shivone, 88, of Wilmington, died Friday, May 19, 2006, at home.
Mr. Shivone worked at the DuPont Experimental Station for 45 years. He was a graduate of Wilmington High School, where he was a quarterback on the football team, pitcher on the baseball team, and one of five players on the basketball team. After high school, he was a professional basketball referee and once refereed the Harlem Globetrotters.
Mr. Shivone saw action with his brother, Francis, at Iwo Jima with the 3rd Marine Division in World War II. He was an avid golfer. He was a member of the DuPont Country Club, where he played cards with his friends every day and was a member of the Senior Club.
His wife, Ann Shivone, died in 1991. His daughter, Michelle, died in 1958. He was preceded in death by his parents, Johanna and Louis Shivone; and his two brothers, Francis and Richard.
He is survived by his two daughters, Luann Shivone of Newark, and Denise S. Leavey and her husband, Tom, of Middletown; one brother, Ralph of Rehoboth Beach; six sisters, Laura Wise of Pennsylvania, Thelma Baumback of Florida, Johanna Cullen, Anita Brindle, Elaine Shivone and Patricia Ciccarelli, all of Wilmington; three grandchildren, Melissa Schueler, Kara Leavey and Tommy Leavey; and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Wednesday, May 24, at 7:30 p.m., at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, Concord Pike at Sharpley Road, Wilmington. Friends may call at the church Wednesday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Committal services will be Thursday, May 25, at 10 a.m., at the chapel of Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery , 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.

Virginia G. Dickerson,
retired school teacher
Virginia Graves Dickerson, 93, of Milford, died Tuesday May 16, 2006, in her home after a long illness.
Mrs. Dickerson was born May 26, 1912, in Townsend, the 10th of 12 children of the late William Edward and Francis Green Graves.
She graduated with a teaching degree from the University of Delaware.
As a youth living with her family in Lewes, Mrs. Dickerson worked at the retail clothing store and garment factory that her father owned and operated.
In 1933, after her college graduation, she was employed as an elementary school teacher with the Laurel School District.
In 1954, Mrs. Dickerson became a partner in the Dutch Inn in Laurel with Marion Horner and was active with the business until 1968.
She married Chester T. Dickerson Sr. in 1936 and remained in Laurel with her husband, with whom she raised their two children, participated in numerous civic organizations and enjoyed the company of many friends they had made, especially the Carvel family.
She and her husband moved to Milford in 1956 after Mr. Dickerson accepted the position of superintendent of schools in 1955.
While residing in Laurel, Mrs. Dickerson was a member and past president of the Laurel New Century Club and the Women’s Society at Centenary Methodist Church and was a 50-year member of the Avenue United Methodist Church in Milford.
At the state level, she was a member and past president of the State Library Commission, a member of the Townsend Building Commission, the State Archives Commission, the Old State House Furnishing Advisory Committee and the Bicentennial Memorial Park Committee.
Mrs. Dickerson served one term as state chairwoman of women’s activities for March of Dimes and one term as chairwoman of Alumni Awards for the University of Delaware.
She was also an alternate to the Democratic National Committee meeting that selected John Kennedy as the presidential nominee.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Chester T. Dickerson Sr. in 1999.
She is survived by a daughter, Frances E. Dickerson of Wilmington; a son and daughter-in-law, Chester T. Jr. and Sally Dickerson of Dover; two grandsons, Chester T. Dickerson III of Arlington, Va., and James R. Dickerson and his wife, Annemarie of Ocean City, Md., and three great-grandchildren, Peyton Avery Dickerson, Ross James Dickerson and Riley Griffin Dickerson.
Services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 20, in Avenue United Methodist Church, 20 N. Church St., Milford, where friends may call one hour earlier. Burial will be in Slaughter Neck cemetery , Argo’s Corner.

Joseph Michael Taggart,
iron worker
Joseph Michael Taggart, 49, of Cocoa, Fla., formerly of Milford, and Claymont, died Monday May 8, 2006, in his home.
Mr. Taggart was born in Wilmington, son of Marina Hill and Joseph Taggart.
He graduated from Claymont High School in 1974, received his associates degree from Delaware Technical & Community College as a certified welder and after moving to Florida, he attended the University of Florida for two years studying metallurgy.
Mr. Taggart began working as a certified welder at the County Pride Chicken Plant in Milford. He moved to Florida and began working as an iron worker, welding at Disney World on such rides as “King Kong,” “Honey I Shrunk the Kids,” “the Bird Cages,” and other rides throughout the park, as well as the Kennedy Space Center.
He also worked as a certified welder at Vector Shipbuilding in Titusville, Fla., where he welded the frame of the company’s first 120-foot fiberglass ship. He retired on disability in 1996.
Mr. Taggart loved to ride his Harley Davidson Soft Tail every chance he got. He always rode his motorcycle on the yearly toy runs for needy children. He was a member of the Abate Motorcycle Rights organization. He also loved to bowl, especially with his mother.
Mr. Taggart loved to go freshwater fishing and had his own lake in his backyard in Florida.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother John Taggart in 1989.
He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Marina F. and Richard Hill of Milton; his father Joseph M. Taggart of Wilmington; two sisters, Sharon Cash of Milford and Patty King, of Ellendale; two brothers, Bill Taggart of Milford, and Paul Taggart of Wilmington; two aunts, Peggy Powers of Newark, and Grace Brent of Princess Anne, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.
