Maureen Mendez,

Maureen “Cookie” Mendez, 50, of Townsend, died, after a battle with cancer, Sunday, June 25, 2006, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover.
Ms. Mendez was born July 4, 1955, in Wiesbaden, Germany, daughter of Renate (Harth) and the late Federico Mendez.
She worked in sales for Wal-Mart, Camden.
Ms. Mendez enjoyed gardening, cooking and taking trips to the mountains. Her biggest joy was to be with her family and friends during the holidays and other gatherings. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel Mendez.
She is survived by her mother, Renate (Harth) Mendez of Hartly; two sons, Christopher Bruns and Brian Bruns, both of Felton; her longtime companion, George Naylor of Townsend; her companion’s parents, George and Joanne H. Naylor of Townsend; a brother and a sister-in-law, Anthony and Jamie Mendez of Milton; two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Arlene and Donald Ebaugh of Dry Fork, W.Va., and Christine and Kenneth Johnson of Dover; three grandchildren, Shaun, Courtney and Holly, all of Dover; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Services were held in Torbert Funeral Chapel South, Dover, with burial in Odd Fellows cemetery , Camden.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, 92 Reads Way, Suite 205, New Castle, DE 19720.
Edwin M. Stokes Jr.
Boothwyn resident
Edwin M. Stokes Jr. of Boothwyn, Pa., died Sunday, June 25, 2006, in his home, under the loving care of the Devereux staff.
He was preceded in death by his father, Edwin M. Stokes Sr.
He is survived by his mother, Norma Bonn Stokes of Lewes, formerly of Dover; a brother and a sister-in-law, Judge Richard F. and Sally S. Stokes, of Rehoboth; a niece and a nephew-in-law, Sarah (Stokes) and Dr. R. Clay Musser of Durham, N.C.; and a nephew, R. Hunter Stokes of Rehoboth.
Services and burial were private.

Richard R. Tapman,
diesel mechanic
Richard R. “Doc” Tapman, 70, of Georgetown, died peacefully Sunday, June 25, 2006, in his home, surrounded by his family.
Mr. Tapman was born in Sanford, Va., son of the late Laurel and Annie (Taylor) Tapman.
He was employed for 34 years as a diesel mechanic supervisor with Townsends Inc., Millsboro, before retiring in 1997.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Kathryn Joseph.
He enjoyed western movies, playing cards and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Sara Layton Tapman; a son and a daughter-in-law, Jeffery and Tracey Tapman of Georgetown; a daughter and a son-in-law, Sharon and William Bradford of Millsboro; two brothers, Laurel Tapman of Millsboro and William Tapman of Salisbury, Md.; two sisters, Glenna Layton and Shirley Tapman, both of Salisbury; two grandsons and a granddaughter-in-law, Troy and Samantha Bradford and William Bradford, all of Millsboro; two granddaughters, Lyndsey Jenkins of Millsboro and Rebekah Tapman of Georgetown; a great-grandson, Alexander Bradford; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday in Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call one hour earlier. The Rev. Robert A. Hudson will officiate. Burial will be in Dagsboro Redmens Memorial cemetery.

J. Douglas Miller,
Vietnam veteran
J. Douglas “Dougie” Miller, 63, of Smyrna, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2006, at his residence.
Mr. Miller was born in Delaware City, the son of the late James B. Miller and the late Jeannette Gafford Miller.
He was a 1960 graduate of John Bassett Moore High School in Smyrna, and was a Vietnam Army veteran, serving from 1964-1967.
He was employed for many years as a stock manager for the Delaware State Communications Center, Dover, retiring in 1999.
He was a faithful member of Citizens Hose Co., Smyrna, since 1958.
Dougie enjoyed reminiscing about the various people, businesses and buildings that existed in the greater Smyrna community in years past.
Above all else, Dougie was a very dedicated and loyal friends and family member.
He is survived by his cousins, his fellow firefighters and many friends.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, June 30, at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce Street, Smyrna, with interment with military honors in Odd Fellows cemetery , Smyrna.

Edward T. Johnson,
retired from IBM
Edward T. Johnson, 79, of Lewes, suddenly entered into rest on Tuesday, June 20, 2006 at Beebe Hospital.
He was born Dec. 27, 1926, the son of Olga Johanna and Simon Peter Johnson. On May 7, 1950, he married Natasha Mary Tammer who predeceased him on Aug. 12, 1968.
Ed was a veteran of World War II. In 1955, he moved to Hillside Lake in Wappingers Falls, N.Y. and worked for IBM Poughkeepsie and East Fishkill until his retirement in 1986 and then moved to Lewes.
Ed was past chief of the Hillside Lake Fire Company No. 3, a long-time member of the Hopewell Reformed Church choir and the Masonic Temple.
He was a member of the Poughkeepsie Newyorkers Barbershop Chorus, the 1st State Harmonizers Barbershop Chorus and the beloved Maggie+4 Barbershop Quartet as well as other barbershop choruses.
Ed was also preceded in death by his son, Kenneth Edward, on Dec. 16, 1973, and his brother Robert.
Ed is survived by his wife, Joyce; his children, Natasha, Carol, Helen, Joyce, Matthew, Karl, Jennifer and Ingrid; his grandchildren, Heather, Douglas, Andrew, Stephanie, Erik and Donovan and his great-granddaughter, Ava.
At the family’s request, there will be no calling hours; service and burial will be at the Hopewell cemetery
in Hopewell Junction, N.Y.
The 1st State Harmonizers will gather for a celebration of his life at a date to be determined.

Elizabeth Schmalhofer,

Elizabeth Lee Schmalhofer, of Rehoboth Beach and Sebastian, Fla., passed away Friday, June 23, 2006, at her home in Rehoboth.
Mrs. Schmalhofer was born in Beebe Hospital in Lewes and was delivered by Dr. Hiram Burton, a relative of Elizabeth. She was the widow of Lt. Colonel George F. Schmalhofer who was retired from the Delaware State Police.
Elizabeth was a charter member of the Colonel David Hall Chapter of the D.A. R. and a former member of the Lewes Yacht Club where her former husband was a past commodore.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dodd Thompson of Rehoboth. Mr. Thompson was a former mayor of Rehoboth, as was his father who was the first mayor of Rehoboth. Elizabeth was also a descendant of Dr. James Thompson, former mayor of Lewes. She was also predeceased by her brother, Robert Walls Thompson.
Surviving are her children, Elizabeth Lee West of Frankford and George Frederick Schmalhofer Jr. of San Louis Obispo, Calif.; four grandchildren, Robert Dodd Austin of Bethany Beach, Laura Elizabeth LeCompte of Destrehan, La., Geoffrey Bryant West of Jupiter, Fla. and George Frederick Schmalhofer, III of Marysville, Wash.; a brother, Robert Dodd Thompson of Rehoboth Beach; and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 27 at the Lewes Presbyterian cemetery , Kings Highway, Lewes, with The Rev. Hillary Livingston officiating. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 327, Rehoboth Beach, DE l9971 and/or Lewes Historical Society, 110 Shipcarpenter Street, Lewes, DE 19958.

Elizabeth S. Towers,
classical pianist
Elizabeth Suzanne Towers, 93, a longtime resident of Washington, D.C., died Thursday, June 22, 2006, of natural causes at Harbor Healthcare in Lewes.
Born on Feb. 19, 1913, in Philadelphia, Pa., Mrs. Towers was student at Centenary College Institute in Hackensack, N.J. Known to her friends as Sue, she was considered a child prodigy and an outstanding classical pianist. She studied musical composition in Paris, France, with the world-renown Nadie Boulanger, and attended Montmorency College. While in France, she married Paul L. de Vos, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate and a Rhodes Scholar studying at Oxford University, in the American Chapel in Paris.
Prior to World War II, she followed her USN officer husband during frequent moves to various locations on both sides of the American continent, but considered Washington, D.C. her permanent home. During World War II, Sue was chief of musical therapy at the Bethesda Naval Hospital, where she taught music to hundreds of naval personnel recovering from their wounds. She traveled widely abroad, and lived in Ecuador for three years shortly after the war ended.
Following her divorce from Capt. de Vos, she wed Adm. James W. Haviland, a former prisoner of war in Japan, and they lived in Coronado, Calif., until he passed in 1960. She then returned to Washington where she married Nelson Towers, who died in 1979. She continued to live in the northwest sector of the capital until she moved to the Plantations in Lewes several years ago.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Gretchen Banks of Georgetown.
She is survived by a son, Ambassador Peter Jon de Vos of Florence, N.C.; and her granddaughters, Suzanne E. Kricker of Harrington and Bonnie Banks of Lewes.
Burial will be at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Anna Eva Meding,
Georgetown homemaker
Anna Eva (Slavinskas) Meding, 88, of Georgetown, died Thursday, June 22, 2006, in Harbor Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Lewes.
Mrs. Meding was born in Scranton, Pa., daughter of the late Louis and Eva (Ravanauskas) Slavinskas.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Meding was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Seaford.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Ernest Meding, in 1984.
She is survived by two sons, Walter Meding of Lewes and Arthur J. Meding of Seaford; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Watson-Yates Funeral Home, Front and King streets, Seaford.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Stein Highway, Seaford. The Rev. John McKenna will officiate.
Burial will follow in Our Lady of Lourdes cemetery , Seaford.
William Adam Kohel,

William Adam Kohel, 85, of Milford, formerly of Harrington, died Friday, June 23, 2006 at Milford Memorial Hospital, Bayhealth Medical Center.
Bill was born Nov. 2, 1920 in Haugen, Wisconsin, the son of the late Josef Peter and Dora Anna (Kust) Kohel.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy Air Corp serving during W.W. II and was stationed in Exeter, England. He was a plane captain and a recognized Naval Hero, receiving four Air Medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross for his heroic missions flown over the Bay of Biscay.
He was the founder of Kohel and Son, a petroleum equipment contracting firm serving the Delmarva Peninsula for many years. He was joined by his son Mike in 1971. He was also a licensed master electrician. Bill was a very active member at both St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church in Harrington and St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Milford. Bill and his wife Corinne were an integral part in helping build St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church. Bill also served as President of Trustees while at St. Bernadette’s and for several years was a religious class teacher. Bill was also a major person involved in the Octoberfest held every year at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church. He was a member of St. Joseph Council #3792 Knights of Columbus, served as Past Commander of the American Legion CKRT Post #7 in Harrington and was a member of the V.F.W. Blue Hen Post # 6483, Milford.
Bill was a kind and considerate man and was known as the neighborhood handyman. He would help out his fellow man any way he could, whether it was at church, working outside around the house and even to drive someone to a doctor’s appointment. He enjoyed boating, fishing and traveling, especially throughout Europe and Hawaii. He also bowled in the Harrington Business Bowling League. Bill was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his wife of 60 and a half years Corinne Clogg Kohel; a son Michael C. Kohel and his wife Phyllis, of Milford; two daughters, Cynthia Kohel Dukes and her husband Donald, of Lewes and Teresa Kohel Hudson and her husband Keith, of Milford; six grandchildren, Melissa Dukes Booker, of Port Orange, Fla.; Jeffrey Kohel and Stacy Kohel Greenly, both of Milford; Donald Dukes II of Lewes; Megan Hudson, of Owings Mills, Md. and Sean Hudson of Frostburg, Md.; seven great-grandchildren Kelsey Kohel, Trey Kohel, Bryce Greenly, Courtney Kohel, and Kristen Greenly, all of Milford and Zachary Booker and Samantha Corinne Booker, both of Port Orange, Fla.; a brother, Edward Kohel; a sister Helen Kohel Johnson, both of Rice Lake, Wis.; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Charles and Betty Davis; two nephews, Tony Davis and Steven Davis, all of Berlin, Md.; and several nieces and nephews living in Wisconsin.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Milford, with burial in Henlopen Memorial Park, Milton.

Rosario Salvatore Sorbara, 74, of Rehoboth Beach, and formerly of Wilmington, passed away on Wednesday, June 22, 2006, at his residence in Rehoboth Beach.
He is survived by his wife of 27 and a half years, Irene (Phillips) Sorbara.
Entombment Services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 28, the Chapel of St. Joseph Mausoleum at Cathedral cemetery , Lancaster Ave., Wilmington, with a viewing to be held from 1 to 1:45 p.m. at Charles P. Arcaro Funeral Home, 2309 Lancaster Avenue, Wilmington.
