Phyllis M. Lindell,
Jefferson Award winner
Phyllis M. Lindell, 76, of Wilmington, passed away on Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at Forwood Manor in Wilmington.
Phyllis was a 1947 graduate of Ursuline Academy in Wilmington and in May 1954 married Charles B. Lindell.
In addition to raising two boys, through the years she worked as a secretary for a law firm, for DuPont, the Ferris School for Boys, and for the Terry Children’s Psychiatric Center. She taught students in Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) classes at St. Matthew’s Church in Woodcrest, where she also served as a Eucharistic Minister. She volunteered her time at the Reading ASSIST Institute, tutoring children to improve their reading skills, and at the Emmanuel Dining Room, providing meals for the hungry.
The Reading ASSIST Institute honored her with the Jefferson Award, which “honors the unsung heroes in our organization who give of themselves without concern for personal gain.” She said of her work at the Emmanuel Dining Room, “I’m very grateful for what God has given me, a house, food, friends, a spiritual life. I want to share some of my blessings with others.” That was her heart.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Charles B. Lindell. She is survived by her two sons, Mark and his wife, Susan, and their daughters, Kristin, Karen, Kimberly and Kelsey, of Wilmington, and Michael and his wife, Sandra, and their daughter, Nicole of Poquoson, Va. She is also survived by her brother, Stephen O’Keefe of Alexandria, Va.; her sister, Anne Lyons of Rehoboth Beach; and her many nieces, nephews and cousins. Her special furry friends, Corky and Charlie, will miss her dearly.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the entire staff of Forward Manor and to the Compassionate Care Hospice nurses and nursing assistants. May God bless them for their unending compassion and care.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 25, at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, 901 E. Newport Pike, Wilmington, DE 19804, where friends may visit with the family beginning at 10 am. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Matthew’s Catholic Church.
Christine ‘Jessie’ Poch,
Midway church member
Christine “Jessie” Poch, 88, of Rehoboth Beach, departed this life Saturday, July 22, 2006, at Manor Care in Wilmington, to be with her Lord and Savior.
Mrs. Poch was born in the Ukraine, daughter of the late Frank and Anna Mospan Cavitch.
Mrs. Poch immigrated to the United States with her parents at the age of two. She moved to the Lewes/Rehoboth Beach area in 1950. She was a founding member of the Assembly of God Church in Lewes.
She was preceded in death by her husband Frank Poch in 1987. She is survived by three sons, Frank Poch Jr. and his wife Barbara of Wilmington; Pastor Ronald Poch and his wife Sharon of Kennesaw, Ga., and James Poch and his wife Adrienne of Windsor, Pa.; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Katherine Attanasi of Lewes and Ann Gage of Yuma, Ariz.; and one brother, Demetro Cavitch of Shalimar, Fla.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 26, 2 p.m., at Midway Assembly of God Church, Rt. 1 and Postal Lane, Lewes, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Pastor Ronald Poch will be officiating.
Burial will follow at Lewes Presbyterian cemetery , Kings HIghway, Lewes.

Jean S. Skillman,
retired businesswoman
Jean S. Skillman, 88, of Lewes, and Sun City Center, Fla., died Sunday, July 23, 2006, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
Mrs. Skillman was born in Lambertville, N.J., daughter of the late Joseph and Sadie Elgard Smith of New Hope, Pa. She was a graduate of New Hope High School in 1935.
Mrs. Skillman was a partner and secretary to her husband in the T.F. Skillman Overhead Garage Door business located in Bloomfield, N.J. In retirement they lived in Ocean Grove and Leisure Village, N.J., before moving to St. Cloud, then Sun City, Fla.
Recently she relocated to her daughter’s home in Lewes.
Mrs. Skillman was a past president of the Bloomfield Federation of Women’s Club; past president of the Bloomfield College Auxiliary; a member of the Blooomfield Eastern Star No. 76 and St. Cloud Order of Eastern Star No. 46. She was a member of the United Community Church, Sun City.
Mrs. Skillman is survived by a daughter, Jane Nicholson and her husband Robert H. of Lewes; two granddaughters, Marjorie Turkett and her husband Glenn of Riva, N.J., and Amanda Stephens of Lewes; a grandson, Robert S. Nicholson and wife Marie of Bear; five great grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and a sister, Marian Booth of Weslaco, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted; and two daughters, Dorean Olson and Gertrude Skillman.
Burial will be private.

Karin H. Grosz,
conservation planner
Karin H. Grosz, 52, of Milford, died peacefully of lung cancer Friday, June 23, 2006, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford, surrounded by loving friends. She had been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer in late December 2005.
Ms. Grosz was born and raised in Princeton, N.J., daughter of Peter and Lilian Grosz.
She attended Princeton public elementary and middle schools and then went to Princeton Day School for the first two years of high school. In 1970, she and her younger brother went with their parents to Germany, where she attended the bilingual John F. Kennedy High School in Berlin.
From January 1972 to June 1974, she attended the University of Wisconsin, expecting to major in anthropology and minor in art. Instead, she pursued a variety of interests and proclivities, ranging from participating in a 16-day sailing and technical program sponsored by the Outward Bound School in Maine, to attending a summer session of the Rhode Island School of Design. She also took a one semester pilot program sponsored by Boston University at the Sailing Education Association School in Woods Hole, Mass., as well as the one-year secretarial program at Katherine Gibbs in Boston.
She graduated in 1996 from Delaware State University with a bachelor of science degree in plant science-agronomy and a bachelor of science degree in general agriculture. She was on the Dean’s List all four years and received several awards and merit scholarships in addition to serving as a research assistant in the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Ms. Grosz worked in Providence, R.I., as a packer in a tomato factory, a kennel assistant for the Animal Rescue League and head cook in a hotel. Returning to Princeton after her brother Michael died in a car accident in November 1976, she worked as head cook at the Whole Earth Center and took temporary secretarial and seasonal sales jobs, including serving as office manager for Belding Corporation at its site office at the Forrestal Campus of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory.
She married Tom Swartz in 1981, an architect specializing in solar design, and moved with him to Lewes. The marriage ended in 1985, but she remained in Delaware, captivated by the beauty and ecology of the Delmarva Peninsula. At first she did odd jobs, ranging from seasonal prep-cook at restaurants to being a stable manager caring for 10 draft horses and giving horse drawn tours of Rehoboth Beach. She also assisted the owner of an organic commercial herb and vegetable business for several years.
Ms. Grosz was employed since 1997 as a conservation planner with the Sussex Conservation District, Georgetown.
She was the granddaughter of the well-known German Expressionist artist George Grosz, from whom she inherited a talent for drawing and an interest in design. She developed a career as a self-employed artist, scientific illustrator, graphic designer and colorist. Among other outlets for her talent was the drafting of charts, maps and graphs for publication and display by the College of Marine Studies at the University of Delaware.
Her illustrations and photographs appeared in numerous books, brochures, manuals and other publications, including “Notes from the Shore,” by Jennifer Ackerman, published by Viking Penguin, and “The Delaware Estuary: Rediscovering a Forgotten Resource,” published by the University of Delaware Sea Grant College Program, which was a national finalist in Take Pride in America Awards Program.
In 1981, an exhibit titled “All in Line,” prints and drawings of parent-child artists Rube Goldberg, Tom George, Margaret Johnson, Lonni Sue Johnson, George Grosz and Karin Grosz, was displayed at the Milberg Gallery at Princeton University’s Firestone Library. Karin Grosz’s work has also been exhibited at the Rehoboth Art League and in Lewes.
Having been program manager for award-winning summer employment programs for at-risk youth in Wilmington and Dover, in 1996, Ms. Grosz went on to become the naturalist educator at a nature center in Milford, and a hawk watch intern at a state park in Lewes. She taught schoolchildren about marine biology, demonstrating field collection techniques and identification of marine organisms, and lecturing on shorebird and horseshoe crab ecology. She also taught them how to observe and do scientific illustration.
A woman with a strong social conscience, she attended and then led workshops on Alternatives to Violence and Conflict Resolution, including in prisons. Concerned about over-development and loss of farmland in the Delmarva Peninsula, she initiated and was the coordinator and secretary of A Better Milford Conservation Advisory Commission. She also initiated and coordinated a cleanup of the Cape Henlopen State Park beach in Lewes, and volunteered for a bird rescue and research center in Wilmington and for a Bald Eagle banding team. She was a volunteer with the Lewes Fire Department.
Ms. Grosz was a member of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, Delmarva Ornithological Society, Sussex Bird Club, Delaware Invasive Species Council and Master Gardeners Delaware, as well as the American Society of Agronomy and Alternatives to Violence-Delaware.
She is survived by her parents, Peter and Lilian Grosz of Princeton; and many friends.
There will be a memorial meeting at Princeton Friends Meeting in the fall.

James F. Wheatley,
First State retiree
James Fletcher Wheatley, 71, of Bethel died after a brief illness Saturday, July 15, 2006, in the VA Medical Center, Baltimore.
Mr. Wheatley was born Feb. 15, 1935, in Portsville, son of the late Charles Samuel Wheatley and Ada Fletcher Wheatley Bradley.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1953 to 1956.
Mr. Wheatley retired from First State Chevrolet, Georgetown, in 1998.
He was a member of the American Legion Post in Sharptown, Md., and the Moose Lodge in Seaford.
Mr. Wheatley’s interests included rebuilding antique cars and doing woodworking - such as building wooden model ships. He always had a fascination for the sea.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Bessie Nichols Wheatley in 2001.
He is survived by his son, Terry Wheatley of Boston; two grandsons, Bryce Wheatley of Boston, and Joseph Rose of Milton; a stepson, Greg Patrick of Milford; two brothers, Charles John Wheatley and Jay Bradley, both of Seaford; four sisters, Linda Wheatley of Waynesboro, Va., Bessie Neff of Emory, Texas, and Kathie Mills and Bonnie Boyce, both of Laurel; and 12 nephews and nieces, C.J. Wheatley, Patty Wheatley, Trey Hardesty, Donna Sheets, Lisa Harwell, Linda Gibson, Laurie Meadows, Brad Lee, Brent Lee, Breanna Boyce, Tyler Bradley and Trevor Bradley.
Services were held in Bethel United Methodist Church, Bethel.
Burial was in Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery , Millsboro.

Augustus Evans Sr.,
retired builder
Augustus Hebrew “Chief” Evans Sr., 70, of Seaford, passed away Thursday, July 13, 2006, in Nanticoke Hospital, Seaford.
Mr. Evans attended the Seaford school systems. After graduating from high school, he attended several schools of higher learning and found his calling in building, writing and helping others.
He loved to tell stories to his family and friends of military ventures and about years spent working on the railroad. He enjoyed walking and visiting with his children, family and friends. He could spend hours telling anyone who would listen about “the good ol’ times.”
Mr. Evans was a jack-of-all-trades and enjoyed meeting and making new friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Solister “Stepfather” and Rosa Peyton; and the “love of his life,” his wife, Dolly Brown.
He is survived by four sons and a daughter-in-law, Augustus and Christina Evans Jr. of Dover, Allen Evans of Washington, D.C., and Alex Justice and Vernon Brown, both of Laurel; two daughters and a son-in-law, Lisa Paige of Rehoboth Beach, and Augustina and Anthony McGee of Salisbury, Md.; 20 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, James and Odessa Peyton of Salem, N.J.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Services were held in Macedonia Church, North Street, Seaford. Burial was in Macedonia cemetery , Stein Highway, Seaford.

Eugene F. Frederick,

Eugene F. Frederick, 60, of Millsboro, died Friday, July 14, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
Eugene was born in Denver, Pa., son of Betty Epright Frederick of Steven, Pa. and the late Franklin Frederick.
He was a veteran of Vietnam, serving with the First Army, 8th Infantry. He was a forklift operator at DANA Corp. in Reading, Pa., retiring after 34 years of service. He was a former member of the Mifflinburg VFW; he enjoyed fishing, hunting and boating.
In addition of his mother, he is survived by his wife of 15 years, Wanda Showers; two sons, Eric Frederick of West Lawn, Pa. and Eugene Frederick of Lewes; four stepsons, Randy, Wayne, John and Harold Ulrich; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Harry and Franklin Frederick. He was preceded in death by a sister, Irene Smith.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 19, in Lewisburg, Pa. Burial was in the Lewisburg cemetery
with military honors by the VFW of Mifflinburg.

Preston Lee Hudson,
World War II veteran
Preston Lee Hudson, 82, of Gumboro, died Monday, July 17, 2006 at Peninsula Regional Medical, Center Salisbury, Md.
Mr. Hudson was born Nov. 3, 1923 in Millsboro, the son of the late John L. & Lizzie Short Hudson, and the husband of the late Madelyn Phillips Hudson, to whom he was married for 51 years.
He was a Navy Veteran of WWII, awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he received aboard the LCS L353 on D-Day at Normandy. He also took part in the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The job of the 353 was mine destruction and picket duty. He wore the American European and Asiatic-Pacific Theatre ribbons and Philippine Liberation bar. He retired from the Beacon Milling Co. in Laurel after 19 years and Townsend’s Inc. after 14 years.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Carl Hudson, in 1990
He is survived by his sons, Richard Lee Hudson and Lee Hudson, both of Gumboro; his daughters, Janice and her husband James Perdue of Gumboro and Joyce and her husband Gary West of Gumboro; a brother, Dale Hudson of Millsboro; his sister, Rebecca and her husband Bill Prettyman of Millsboro; a sister-in-law, Pearl Morris of Laurel; his grandchildren, JR and his wife Beth Perdue, Nicky Brittingham, DJ Oliphant, Faith and her husband Wayne Courtney; and his great-grandchildren, Dylan, Caleb, Nicholas, Madelyn and Steven; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at noon, Saturday, July 23, 2006, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St. Millsboro, where friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to noon Saturday. Interment will be in Jerusalem Methodist cemetery , Parsonsburg, Md., with the Rev. Robert Hudson officiating.
Lenora G. Haag,
worked in White House
Lenora G. Haag, 92, died peacefully at her home in Rehoboth Beach, on Sunday, July 16, 2006.
Mrs. Haag was born in Bay Head, NJ. She and her family resided for many years in the Washington, DC area.
She was employed as a civil servant for nearly 30 years as an Administrative Assistant at the White House. Her career spanned many administrations, beginning with Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman. Following the births of her daughters, she returned to the White House to work for the Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon administrations. During that time, she worked, among others, for Eric Goldman, Special Assistant to John F. Kennedy, under LBJ; The President’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board, which included Nelson D. Rockefeller; and under the Johnson administration, and possibly her most interesting years, were spent working closely with Elizabeth Carpenter, Mrs. Johnson’s press secretary. Mrs. Carpenter remained a friend and, who to this day, continues to be a renowned author and speaker.
During the war years, Lenora was president of the Government Girls Club in Washington, D.C., which was comprised of representatives of each government agency. Through their efforts, and under the tutelage of Eleanor Roosevelt, among other endeavors, they raised money to buy a fighter plane.
Mrs. Haag and her husband, Bud, retired in 1973 and she embarked upon a second career in real estate sales, working for Jack Lingo Real Estate. She worked there approximately 10 years.
After retirement from her second career, she and her husband moved to Florida to live full time and after her husband’s death in 1998, she returned to Rehoboth Beach to reside with her daughters.
She was an avid bridge player and a voracious reader.
In addition to her husband, William “Bud” Haag, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Janette Gallagher and Anna Zemecki. She is survived by her daughters, Gretchen and Christina Haag and her brother, Joseph Green, his family, and many nieces and nephews.
All services are private.
