Robert S. Watkins,
retired printer
Robert Sidney Watkins, 81, of Milton, died Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at home.
Mr. Watkins was born in Washington, D.C., to the late Sidney W. and Lena W. Franke Watkins. He was a printer for the U.S. government, retiring in 1982. He moved to Milton from Suitland, Md. in 1982. He was a member of Conley’s United Methodist Church, Angola, a past master of Harmony Lodge No. 17, F.A.&A.M. in Washington, D.C., Unity Chapter No. 16, Order of the Eastern Star in Lewes, past grand patron of the Grand Chapter of Delaware Order of the Eastern Star and a life member of Rehoboth VFW Post 7447,
He enjoyed playing the keyboard, photography, wood working and loved trains.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael Watkins; and two stepsons, Scott Donophan and Boyd Jay Donophan.
He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Nancy Claire Jester Watkins; three sons, Stephen Watkins and his wife Jane of Laurel, Md., Thomas Watkins and his wife Donna of Princess Anne, Md. and John Watkins of New Jersey; a daughter, Janet Russillo and her husband, Paul of Laurel, Md.; two stepchildren, Mark Donophan and his wife Melanie of Fruitland, Md. and Laurie Donophan of Edgewood, Md.; a brother, James Watkins of Gambrills, Md.; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Eastern Star services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 15, at Conley’s United Methodist Church followed by a memorial service. Pastor Randy Booth will officiate.
Contributions are suggested to Conley’s United Methodist Church Building Fund, 22150 Robinsonville Rd, Lewes DE 19958.

Robert Francis Currin,
retired from construction
Robert Francis Currin, 83, of Lewes, passed away Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at his residence.
He was born April 29, 1923 in Baltimore, Md., son of the late Clifton and Maude Frances Bradford Currin.
Mr. Currin had a long career in construction. During the latter part of his career, he was employed by the federal government. His most famous construction job was the renovation of the White House during President Reagan’s era. He moved to Delaware 20 years ago from the Clarksburg, Md. area. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. For his service, he received a Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and an American Defense Medal.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara in March 2005; and his son-in-law, William Marston.
He is survived by two sons, Douglas Clayton Currin and his wife Anny of Frederick, Md. and William Russell Currin and his wife Noel of Sugarland, Texas; one daughter, Bonita Marston of Germantown, Md.; six grandchildren, Robert Alan Marston, Kristi Ann Marston, Andrew Currin, Emma Currin, Joseph Currin, and Suzanne Currin; and one brother, Clifton Bradford Currin of Newtown Square, Pa.
All services are private. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.

Michael Brelick,
retired teacher
Michael Brelick, age 92, of Fort McCoy, Fla., died peacefully on Thursday, June 29, 2006, at Legacy Hospice House, in Ocala, Fla.
Mr. Brelick graduated from Plymouth High School, in Plymouth, Pa., in 1933.
He was in the Army Air Corps from 1933-1935, attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C. from 1936-1938, then re-enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He was stationed in PR for two years, after which he was at Fort Lee, Va. with the Quartermaster Corps. He served in World War II with the 91st Troop Carrier Squadron, seeing action in England, France and Italy. He graduated from the US Army Command and General Staff School in August 1945. Following World War II, he was in the Army Air Corps when its name was changed to U.S. Air Force. He also graduated from Air Command and Staff School in August 1952. For the Korean Conflict, he was sent to Pusan, Korea, from April-October 1953, to debrief American prisoners. His last assignments before retiring from the U.S. Air Force April 30, 1957 were with the Air Force Reserves and an ROTC unit at the University of Richmond, in Richmond, Va. Here he earned his bachelors degree in elementary education and was honored and inducted into Kappa Delta Pi in November 1957.
Mr. Brelick taught in the New Castle School District, in New Castle, beginning in January 1958. In June 1962, he earned his Master’s of Education degree from the University of Delaware.
During his career, he was president of the Newark Education Association, and attended a French Institute at Penn State University for two summers. He taught in the Newark School District until he retired from teaching in January 1979. Mr. Brelick played baseball for Langley Field Air Force Base, in Virginia, and for Losey Field Air Force Base, in PR, while in the service.
During his retirement years, he took up golf. After moving to The Villages in Lady Lake, Fla., he played golf on a regular basis. In FL, he was quite active in the Lady Lake Methodist Church and church choir, often singing solos. While in Delaware, he was a member of the Kingswood of Brookside United Methodist Church and later The Newark United Methodist Church. He and his wife, Chaunca, volunteered at the Blood Bank of Delaware and the Methodist Country House. He was truly a loving family man.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Chaunca Franklin Brelick; his wife of three years, Marion Cara Brelick; and his son-in-law, Michael Ballantini, of Kansas City, Mo.
Mr. Brelick is survived by his wife of three years, Laura Baker Brelick; his son, Michael E. Brelick, of New Castle, and his wife, Connie Burrus Brelick; his daughters, Helen Brelick Schneck, of Rehoboth Beach, Claire Brelick Petersen, of Des Moines, Iowa, and her husband, Rich Petersen, and Lee Brelick Ballantini, of Kansas City; a sister, Helen Gallagher, of Mountain Top, Pa. Mr. Brelick has three grandsons, Michael-Chad Brelick, of Bear, and his wife, Amy Alisa Brelick, and Keith Petersen and Erik Petersen, both of Des Moines. He also has one great grandson, Michael Henry Brelick, of Bear, DE. Mr. Brelick was so pleased to be the first of four generations of Michael Brelicks, and met great-grandson Michael Henry Brelick in June 2005. There are several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great-nephews also surviving. There are also children and grandchildren on Laura’s side of the family.
Arrangements are being made by Beeson Funeral Home of Newark, 2053 Pulaski Highway, Newark, DE. Viewing and visitation will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 7, at Beeson Funeral Home of Newark, 2053 Pulaski Highway, followed by the funeral service. Burial will be in the Arlington National cemetery
at 9 a.m., Aug. 9, 2006 at 9 am, with full military honors.

Donald Richard Snyder,
retired insurance agent
Donald Richard Snyder, 69, of Lewes, passed away on Sunday, July 9, at his residence. He was born Sept. 19, 1936, in Hamburg, Pa., son of the late Arlene (Reitz) Snyder and Arlan Snyder of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Snyder owned and operated an insurance agency for 40 years in the Reading, Pa. area. He was a former president and former captain of the Muhlenberg Ambulance Association in Reading. He was also a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary for more than 20 years. He was very active with the Masonic Lodge 549 in Reading. He and his wife moved to Delaware in 1996. He joined the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, where he was a member of the Stewardship Committee and men’s Bible study class.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife Patricia Snyder; two daughters, Kimberly Snyder of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Leslie Snyder of Reading; two sons, Christopher Snyder of Reading and Scott Snyder of Drexel Hill, Pa.; and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Lutheran Church of Our Service at a later date.

Jacob C. “Jack” Smith,
World War II veteran
Jacob C. “Jack” Smith of Millsboro, 83, passed away on Monday, July 10, 2006, at Beebe Medical Center.
He was born in Manhattan, N.Y., to the late John and Bertha (Klein) Smith.
Jack was a carpenter before his retirement and served in the U.S. Navy Seabees during World War II.
He is survived by two daughters – Kathryn M. O’Brien and Jan L. Smith; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, July 17, at the chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery , Patriot’s Way, Millsboro, with burial to follow the service. A viewing will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m., Sunday, July 16, in the Long Neck chapel of Melson Funeral Services on Long Neck Road in Millsboro.

George J. Danforth,
retired metallurgist
George J. Danforth, 87, of Rehoboth Beach, died Friday, July 7, 2006, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md. He was born June 22, 1919 in Youngstown, Ohio, son of the late Charles Warren and Eliza (Bowditch) Danforth.
Mr. Danforth had been self-employed as a metallurgist. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Fernanda (Mignini) Danforth; a daughter, Elena Ake and her husband Douglas of Ocean City, Md.; a son, William G. Danforth of Rehoboth Beach; two granddaughters, Dr. Jennifer Ake of Fairfax, Va. and Christina Harrison and her husband Hale of Ocean City, Md.
A prayer service will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 12, at St. Edmond’s Catholic Church, King Charles & Laurel Streets, Rehoboth Beach, with the Rev. Raymond Forrester officiating. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven cemetery , Route 26, Dagsboro. Simon, newborn
Shayna-Rae Batee Simon died Thursday, July 6, 2006, in Christiana Hospital, Newark. She was a newborn.
She was born the same day.
She is survived by her mother, Rayna Brown of Georgetown; her father, Waynesley Simon of Millsboro; her maternal grandparents, Raymond W. Jr. and Lin J. Brown of Georgetown; her paternal grandparents, Waynesley and Vereta Simon of Georgetown; her maternal great-grandmothers, Patricia Brown of Ellendale and Hazel Cordrey of Lewes; and her paternal great-grandparents, Stanley and Alison Simon of Milton and Emerson Sr. and Virginia Prattis of Seaford.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Conley’s Chapel cemetery , Angola.

Howard J. Anthony,
Caroline County retiree
Howard J. “Jack” Anthony, 85, of Greensboro, Md., died Friday, July 7, 2006, in Memorial Hospital in Easton.
Mr. Anthony was born in Chester, Pa., son of the late Howard J. Sr. and Annie (Turner) Anthony.
He lived most of his life in the mid-shore area.
Mr. Anthony raised beagle and coon dogs as well as raccoons.
He worked for the Caroline County Roads Department from 1967 to 1983, when he retired.
Mr. Anthony was a member of several Delaware beagle clubs.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Ellen Anthony, who died May 18, 1983; a son, Howard J. Anthony III, in 1995; and a daughter, Jennifer Wright, in 1998.
He is survived by five daughters, Sandra L. Peterson of Weatherford, Texas, Jacqulyn Anders of Ridgely, Md., Beverly McNeal, of Hillsboro, Md., Edith Ann Corkell of Denton, Md. and Pamela Grace Poe of Milton; a brother, Edward Anthony of Aspen, Pa.; two sisters, Ann Fiduk of Ocala, Fla., and Joan Toomey of Aspen; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Moore Funeral Home, PA, 12 S. Second St., Denton, Md.
Services will be at noon Wednesday in the funeral home, where friends may also call one hour earlier, with burial in Greenmount cemetery , Hillsboro, Md.

Magolda Young,
community seamstress
Magolda Young, 98, of Lincoln, died Thursday, July 6, 2006, in Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill, Smyrna.
Mrs. Young was born Dec. 24, 1907, daughter of the late Jeremiah and Bertha Groves.
She was educated through Slaughter Neck School and Bryn Mawr School in Pennsylvania.
Mrs. Young was the community seamstress until her death. She always had a smile on her face whenever the subject of sewing came up. She sewed faithfully to supplement her income for many years.
She also enjoyed working in her flower garden and long country rides with her nephew, Frank Watson.
Mrs. Young truly loved the Lord and gave her life to Christ at the early age of 12. She was a faithful member of Wesley Chapel Church, where she served on the usher board, the Missionary Society and the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of NAACP.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, John Curry; her second husband, Lorenzo Young; four sisters, Josephine, Mabel, Mary Emily and Maretta; and her brothers, Jeremiah Jr. and Ralph.
She is survived by two sisters, Pauline Curry and Lillie Whaley, both of Milford; her sister’s Lillie’s seven children, whom she helped raise, not having children of her own, her devoted niece Sarah Watson and her husband Frank of Milford, Blanche Hall and her husband Granville of Milton, Alton Whaley of Milton, Jeremiah “Kevin” Whaley of Georgetown, Sheila Lang and her husband Derrick of Ellendale, Camuel Whaley of Dover and Marnetta Atkins and her husband Jeffrey of Harrington; and two sisters-in-law, Esther Groves of Lincoln and Nettie Groves of Concord, near Seaford.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, in Wesley Chapel Church, Slaughter Neck.
George M. Von Goerres,
Diamond State retiree
George M. Von Goerres, 82, of Harrington, died Thursday, July 6, 2006, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover.
Mr. Von Goerres was born in Harrington, the son of the late Hubert and Florence Johnson Von Goerres.
He graduated from Harrington High School in 1941.
Mr. Von Goerres served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he was assigned to the 712th Military Police Battalion.
After his military service, he worked for the Red Star Trailways Motor Coaches Inc. as a bus driver from 1946 to 1948. In 1948, he was hired by Diamond State Telephone Co., where he worked for 41 years before retiring in 1989. In 1970, he received the Diamond State Telephone Co. Good Neighbor Award, honoring dedicated telephone company employees for community service.
He was a member of Temple Lodge 9, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, Milford, and was a life member of the Harrington Volunteer Fire Co., where he served for 59 years. He was a past recording secretary and past president for the Harrington Volunteer Fire Company and was awarded the American National Red Cross Award for Humanity for Volunteer First Aid Life Saving Service. He was one of the original Harrington Volunteer Fire Co. ambulance crew members and he taught first aid as a certified Red Cross instructor to many of the original Delaware volunteer ambulance crews, along with his brother.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Ena (Evans) Von Goerres, in 2003; and a brother, Herbert G. Von Goerres, in March 2006.
He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Beverly E. Von Goerres of Newark and Beth E. and Jeff Hudson of Harrington; a son and daughter-in-law, Bruce E. and Cindy Von Goerres of Felton; five grandchildren, Rachael Hudson, Jeffery Colby Hudson, Joel Hudson, Adam Hudson and Ashley Hudson; a sister and brother-in-law, Jeanette and Russell Legates of Harrington; a sister-in-law, Evelon Rust Von Goerres of Georgetown; two nephews, Herbert E. Von Goerres and his wife Marcy of Lewes; and David R. Von Goerres Legates of Middletown.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m., Wednesday in the Harrington Volunteer Fire Co. Station, 20 Clark Street.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the fire station, where friends may also call one hour earlier.
Burial with firefighters’ honors will be in Hollywood cemetery , Milford-Harrington Highway, Harrington.
