Nellie Barcus Shortall, 85, formerly of Centreville, Md., died Saturday, March 17, 2007, at Harbor Healthcare in Lewes.
She was the beloved mother of Joseph F. Shortall Jr. and his wife Connie of Denton, Md.; Charles R. Shortall and his wife Donna of Easton, Md.; James P. Shortall and his wife Sandy of Ocean View; Alicia Wharton and her husband Eric of Lewes; and Andrea Shortall of Lewes. She was the grandmother of Bret Shortall and his wife Jennifer, Bart Shortall and his wife Angie, Ron Shortall and his wife Cathy, Dawn Shortall, Jan McMichael and her husband Timothy, J.P. Shortall, Loren Shortall, Allison Shortall, Christopher Shortall and his wife Ashley, Eric Wharton, Kyle Wharton and Ryan Wharton. She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Brady, Emily, Megan, Courtney, Michael, Whitney, Briar, Kayla, Andrew and Miranda.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph F. Shortall; her parents, William James and Rouse Barcus; granddaughter Joelle Wharton; and all of her siblings, Elizabeth Renahan, Alice Dwyer, Mabel Wood, Ethel Moore, Loretta Carlin, William James Barcus Jr., Charles Barcus and Andrew Marsh.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 24, at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church in Centreville. Burial will follow in Chesterfield cemetery

Denise A. Hitchens,

Denise A. Hitchens, 57, of Georgetown, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2007, in Lewes as a result of injuries sustained from an automobile accident.
Mrs. Hitchens was born in New York City, daughter of the late Michael and Josephine Maragline La Rotonda.
She moved to Delaware in 1991 and was a self-employed hairdresser at Hey Good Looking Salon in Milton for the past eight years.
She was a real family-oriented person who loved her children and grandson and was expecting another grandson May 1.
Mrs. Hitchens was a member of St. Jude’s Catholic Church, Nassau.
She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Jeff J. Hitchens; a daughter and son-in-law, Nicole J. and Louis Sollino of Westchester, N.Y.; a son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Maureen Hitchens of Milford; a brother, Michael W. La Rotonda of Westchester; and a grandson, Louis N. Sollino of Westchester.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 20, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, in St. Jude’s Catholic Church, Nassau.
Burial will be private.

L. Mae Allen, 83, of Denton, Md., died Saturday, March 17, 2007, in the Memorial Hospital in Easton, Md.
Mrs. Allen was born in Easton, daughter of the late William Sebastion and Leona Foxwell George.
She was a 1941 graduate of Easton High School.
Mrs. Allen had worked for Maurice Adams of Trappe, Md. She performed labeling at Fox’s Cannery in Queen Anne, Md., and Saulsbury Brothers in Ridgely, Md.
She was known as an avid cook, which all of her neighbors in Hillsboro could attest to. Where there was a need, she was there. She enjoyed gardening and taking care of her house. She also kept busy in later years doing word search puzzles 24/7.
Mrs. Allen was a member of the American Legion Caroline Post 29 Auxiliary where she enjoyed helping the ladies with kitchen duties.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ross A. Allen Sr., March 28, 1998; and 10 siblings.
She is survived by two sons, Ross Allen Jr. and Roland Allen; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Rhonda A. and Willis Johnson III of Lewes, and Kimberley A. and Lee T. Blades Jr. of Denton; a devoted granddaughter, Karen T. Matthews and her husband, Anthony of Laurel; two grandsons with whom she lived, Joshua A. Blades and Jordan B. Blades; a granddaughter, Melissa Mueller of Easton and her sons, Zachery and Jacob Mueller; a grandson, Michael Allen of Florida; a granddaughter, Gwen Boyles; a great-grandson, Conor Matthews; a great-granddaughter, Allyson Mueller; two brothers, Phillip George of Whitemarsh, Pa., and Otis George of Virginia; five sisters, Irene Dayton of Harrington, Pansy Tolson of Chestertown, Md., Louise Thompson of Dover, Rose Perry of Federalsburg, Md., and Barbara Watson of Goldsboro, N.C.; and a special and devoted friend, Shirley Harris of Cordova, Md.
A funeral service will be 1 p.m., Tuesday, March 20, in Moore Funeral Home, PA, 12 S. Second St., Denton, where friends may call one hour earlier. Burial will be in Denton cemetery.

Dale Lewis “Banjo” Miller, 55, of Lyndhurst, Ohio and formerly of Chardon, Ohio and Rehoboth Beach, died Friday, March 9, 2007, in Newark.
Mr. Miller was born April 5, 1951 in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from Chardon High School and attended Kent State University.
He was employed by the City of Chardon Water Treatment Department for 18 years.
He is survived by his parents, Carol and Lester Miller of Eustis, Fla.; a brother, John, and sister-in-law, Kathy; nieces Ashley and Kaitlin of Huntsville, Ala.; a nephew, Martin Miller of Vail, Colo.; a sister, Marcia Schneider, and brother-in-law, Robert of Avon Lake, Ohio; a niece, Cara Muchmore of Sheffield Lake, Ohio; and his fiancée, Anita Hollcufer of Lewes.
A private family gathering was held March 14, with a celebration of life to be held at a later date in Delaware.

Thomas J. Turner, of Milton and formerly of Sterling, Va., died unexpectedly but peacefully.
A celebration of his life will be held at the home of his wife from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, March 24. All who knew him are welcome to attend.

Albert E. Seagraves Jr.,

Albert Edward Seagraves Jr., 75, of Rehoboth Beach, died Thursday, March 15, 2007 at home.
Mr. Seagraves was born on July 3, 1931 in Linwood, Pa. He was the son of the late Albert E. Seagraves Sr. and Thelma Lesner Seagraves.
He proudly served his country in the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division in the Korean conflict. Upon his return from Korea, he was married to Gloria Elaine Davies to whom he was a loving and devoted husband of 55 years. Al was also a devoted father and grandfather to his three sons and 10 grandchildren by whom he will be sorely missed.
He was employed by Sun Oil Company at the Marcus Hook refinery, where he served for most of his 35-year career as an instrument engineer. He later became the facilities manager in the R&D and Semi-works Division before he retired and moved to Rehoboth Beach in 1985.
He lived most of his life in Delaware County, Pa., where he was an active member of the community serving as Chichester Township commissioner and later as school board president of the Garnet Valley School District in Concord, Pa. He was also a member of the VFW, Sun Oil Sapphire Club, Groome United Methodist Church and was a member of Jefferson Masonic Lodge 15.
He loved sports and was an active supporter of youth sports programs where he served as a coach, umpire and referee in the Mickey Vernon Little League and the Chichester Crusader and Marcus Hook Viking football programs. He also was an active umpire at various levels of recreational and competitive adult softball leagues in Delaware County where he reportedly never made a bad call.
Al was an avid outdoorsman who loved golf, fishing, boating and hunting. He was a longtime member of the Shawnee Country Club in Milford and the Lewes Yacht Club. His other hobbies included woodworking and carpentry. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife during his retirement years.
While he was a devoted Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies fan, his greatest joy was the time he spent with his wife watching his sons and grandchildren participate in sports at the youth, high school and collegiate levels. A more cherished and supportive fan has never existed.
He is survived by his wife Gloria Elaine Davies Seagraves; three sons and three daughters-in-law; Albert E. III and Debra J. Seagraves of Burlington, N.C., Richard J. Sr.and Deborah M. Seagraves of Milford and Jeffrey T. and Carolyn S. Seagraves of Thornbury, Pa.; a sister, Betty Jean Trent of Linwood, Pa. a brother, Ronald Seagraves of Pennsville, N.J.; and 10 grandchildren, Cheri, Skip, Chad, Richard, Andrew, Rosie, Annie, Dylan, Nathan and Lily.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 20, at Groome United Methodist Church, Savannah Road, Lewes. Burial will be private.

Betty Mae Breeding,

Betty Mae Drummond Breeding, 77, of Lewes, and formerly of Greenwood, died Thursday, March 15, 2007, at Harbor Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Lewes.
She was born Sept. 15, 1929, in Shelby, Ohio, daughter of the late Charles and Beatrice Good Drummond.
Mrs. Breeding was a seamstress.
She was preceded in death by her husband Russell E. Breeding (1994).
She is survived by her two sons, Dale R. Breeding of Greenwood and Douglas Breeding of Lincoln; and her grandson, Dale R. Breeding II, to whom she was devoted.
All services are private.

Joanne Elizabeth
Currier Daiber,

Joanne Elizabeth Currier Daiber died peacefully, February 16, 2007 in her beloved New England. She was born in Winchester, Mass., in 1927.
She and her sister, Thelma Ann, lived their childhood with their parents Sidney Wood Currier and Thelma Adelia Andrews in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Joanne Currier received her bachelor of science degree in biology from Bates College in 1949 and her master’s degree in biology from Vassar College in 1951. Joanne Currier was the first woman marine biologist hired by the University of Delaware in 1951. She was a founding member of the Graduate College of Marine Studies at the University of Delaware where she met her future husband, Dr. Franklin C. Daiber (1919-2003). Because of the nepotism laws at that time, Joanne Currier Daiber was forced to leave the employ of the university after her marriage to Dr. Daiber in 1953. She continued to be a vital force at the College of Marine Studies, assisting in research at the marine lab, overseeing housing for graduate students and editing Dr. Daiber’s two published books. A plankton she discovered was named for her - Daiber.
Joanne Currier Daiber raised two sons, Steven and Gregory, in Newark.
She was a founder of the guide program at the Delaware Nature Society in the 1970s and was responsible for helping develop educational programs for K-12 students and their teachers at the Ashland Nature Center. Joanne was a lifelong member and acting president of piscatorial adventurers in the Societte Littoral Hortense Horrand.
Throughout her life, she enjoyed traveling with Dr. Daiber to areas of natural wonder, the Galapagos Islands, Panama, Iceland, Nova Scotia and the Yorkshire dales of England. They continued to enjoy camping into their later years.
In 1993 they moved to Cornwall Manor Retirement Community in Cornwall, Pa., where they enjoyed nature walks and wrote a book identifying all species of trees on the Cornwall campus. A book of their memoirs, “Salty Memoirs: Adventures in Marine Science,” was published by the University of Delaware in 2000.
In 2000 Dr. Daiber and family established a scholarship fund, the Joanne Currier Daiber Scholarship to support women graduate students studying marine biology at the College of Marine Studies, University of Delaware.
The family wishes to acknowledge Mrs. and Dr. Daiber’s life long contributions to the preservation and study of the natural world as our greatest living resource. The family requests that contributions be made to the Joanne Currier Daiber Scholarship Fund, Graduate College of Marine Studies, University of Delaware, Newark, DE 19716.

Brett William Marshall, 47, of Wilmington, passed away suddenly, Wednesday, March 14, 2007.
Brett was a friendly, nice, big-hearted man who was liked by everyone. He loved life and laughter. He was always willing to do anything for anyone and truly had a heart of gold. Brett was a very talented photographer who was extremely passionate about his work.
He was a man of many interests and passions and could hold a conversation on almost any subject. He worked at Concord Pike Liquors for the past seven years and loved his job and his many friendships with his customers. His kind spirit and soul will be forever missed by all who knew him.
Brett will be greatly missed by his companion, Brenda Stephens of Wilmington; his four cats, Yasmine, Clancy, Moe and Enus; his mother, Robin Marshall of Wilmington; his father and stepmother, William and Marilyn Marshall of Claymont; his big sister, Dana of Tennessee; his little brother and sister-in-law, Craig and Carla Marshall; his nieces, Olivia and Claudia; and his nephew, Berkeley, all of Hockessin; his paternal grandmother, Alma Marshall, and his aunt and uncle, Barbara and Vincent Marshall, all of New Castle; his aunt, Joy Ruggieri of Kennett Square, Pa.; his step-sisters, Cindy Lyster of Elverson, Pa., Pamela Lewis of North Stonington, Conn., Beverly Lewis of Lewes, and Sheila Pfeifenroth of Wilmington; two step-nephews and three step-nieces.

Anne Marie Lindner,

Anne Marie Callahan Lindner, 74, of Lewes, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2007, at Harbor Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Lewes. Mrs. Lindner was born March 18, 1932 in the Bronx, N.Y., daughter of the late Lawrence and Helen Maher Callahan.
Mrs. Lindner moved to Lewes 12 years ago from Hastings on the Hudson, West Chester County, N.Y., where she served on the Drug Guidance Council. She was also a realtor in New York and worked in the real estate department of a Manhattan, N.Y., law firm conducting closings. Together with her husband, she raised five children. In her early years of employment, she was a nursery school teacher. She was a member of St. Jude The Apostle Catholic Church. She was a wonderful and loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, John P. Lindner; two daughters, Mary Pat Dailey and her husband Mark of Fulsear, Texas, and Kathleen DeGrandpre and her husband Mike of Missoula, Mont.; three sons, John Lindner and his wife Maureen of Hastings on the Hudson, N.Y., Steven Lindner and his wife Alyss of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., and Lawrence Lindner and his wife Patty of Havertown, Pa.; nine grandchildren, Elizabeth, Margaret, Melissa, Mary Kate, Annie, Patrick, Ella, Mabel and John Patrick; her sister, Eileen Dowd and her husband Ray of Lewes; and her brother, Lawrence Callahan and his wife Lucille of Frederick, Md.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 29, at St. Jude The Apostle Catholic Church, Route 1 north of Five Points, Lewes, with The Rev. Jim Hreha officiating. Interment will be private. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.

Evelyn Newlin Lichtenstein, 99, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 12, 2007, at her residence. Mrs. Lichtenstein was born September 25, 1907, in Marden, Mass., daughter of the late Howard and Jenny Wilson Newlin.
Mrs. Lichtenstein was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Rehoboth Beach. She was also a member of the Rehoboth Beach Village Improvement Association, the Beebe Hospital Auxiliary and Volunteers and the Rehoboth Beach Country Club. She was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Lichtenstein in 1995. She is survived by her good friend, Frances Cowgill, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
There will be no viewing and the burial at All Saints cemetery , near Angola, will be private. There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 25, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 301 King Charles Ave., Rehoboth Beach, with The Rev. Dr. Frank S. Deming Jr. officiating.
