Mary Frances Alford,

Mary Frances Alford, 90, departed this life Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at Life Care in Lofland Park, Seaford, after a short illness, surrounded by her family and friends.
She was born April 10, 1916, to the late Mary H. and Benjamin Burton, the youngest of six children.
She received her early education at Number 29 School, Wilmington, and later attended Howard High School.
She completed her education at Brown’s Vocational School, where she received her nursing degree.
She was employed at Delaware State Hospital until her retirement.
Mary was also an avid reader. She spent hours at a time reading the Bible and everything she could get her hands on.
She was very active in the Greenwood CHEER Center. She was the president for several years and enjoyed the various trips they sponsored.
She was also a member of Crossroad Community Church.
Shopping was her passion. She loved to look nice and wear pretty things.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sloran T. Alford; a son, Malcolm C. Wright; and granddaughters Jean Wright, Tanya Wright and Ami Wright.
She is survived by a daughter, Kathleen P. Dickerson of Greenwood; two sons, Anthony Wright of Tamarac, Fla., and Robert F. Alford of Milton; two daughters-in-law; Phyllis Wright of Tamarac and Barbara Wright of Camden, N.J.; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Services were held in Crossroad Community Church, Bridgeville, with burial in Indian Mission Church cemetery , Millsboro.
John J. Marine,
U.S. Army veteran
John J. Marine, 81, of Georgetown and formerly of Brookview, Md., passed away surrounded by his loving family Friday, March 9, 2007, at Harbor Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Lewes.
He was the son of the late Wilber and Daisy Marine. He was also preceded in death by brothers Lloyd and Robert Marine. John was retired from the Melvin Joseph Construction Co. in Georgetown and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He loved to be busy doing yard work.
He is survived by his daughters, Joanne Shockley of Seaford, Debbie Justice and her husband Chris of Millsboro, and Kathy Moyer and her husband Keith of Millsboro; stepdaughters Brenda Pusey of Georgetown and Joan Munson of Michigan; grandchildren, Lisa Kvilhaug and her husband Sean of Seaford, Kim Allen and her husband Mark of Laurel, Jennifer Justice of Dover, Pam Gallagher and her husband Joe of Lincoln; five great-grandchildren; and two nephews.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 13, at the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home, 700 West St. in Laurel, where friends and family may call one hour prior. Interment will be in Brookview United Methodist Church cemetery
Brookview, Md. The Rev. Sam McWilliams will officiate.

Donald B. Millar,
U.S. Army veteran
Donald B. Millar, retired U.S. Army colonel, passed away Feb. 12, 2007.
Col. Millar graduated from Pierre S. duPont High School in Wilmington in 1937, and he attended the universities of Maryland, Hawaii and Texas. He graduated from the Command & Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan. Col. Millar was called to duty with the Delaware National Guard, 198th Coast Artillery in 1940 as a staff sergeant. He graduated from Officer Candidate School in 1942. He served in the South Pacific; Germany; Korea; Hawaii; North Carolina; New York; Texas; Washington, D.C. and Massachusetts and commanded the Kwajalein missile range in Micronesia.
He spent 23 of his 35 years’ active duty in research and development. He received the Soldier’s Medal for heroism at Boro Boro, Society Islands, was a three-time recipient of the Legion of Merit Medal, and was awarded the Army, Air Force and Department of Defense commendation medals. An avid fan of flying, Col. Millar received his pilot’s license in 1959. In 1975, he retired from his last duty station, ENT Air Force Base, ARADCOM, Colorado Springs, Colo. He moved to Redlands, Calif., in 1976 and resided there for 29 years.
In 2005, he and his wife relocated to Colorado Springs to be with their daughter, Pamela. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Redlands, Calif.; the Quiet Birdmen; Granite-Corinthian Lodge 34; AF & AM (Wilmington); Honolulu Scottish Rite Bodies (Hawaii); Aloha Temple (Hawaii Shriners); Al Malaikah Temple (Los Angeles Shriners); Orange Belt Shrine Club (Redlands); San Bernardino Shrine Club (Calif.); National Sojourners (Arrowhead 421 and Los Angeles 26 chapters; Heroes of 76); San Bernardino Masonic High Twelve Club; The Military Officers Association of America (Riverside and Orange Empire chapters); The Military Order of the World Wars (LTG John M. Wright chapter); AUSA, American Legion, Post 105; DAV; VFW; Sertoma (Woodmen Valley, Colorado Springs); Kiwanis Morning (Redlands) and the American Red Cross.
In 1994, Service Clubs of Redlands honored him with the Roy Coble Award for his dedication to youth projects. He volunteered as disaster relief chairman for the American Red Cross, San Bernardino, Calif., and spent many weeks in the Virgin Islands Hurricane Relief (1991), St. Louis floods (1993), Laguna Hills fires (1993) and the Northridge earthquake (1994).
He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Janet Quinn; three daughters - Gail Smith of Salado, Texas, Karen Fischer of Lewes and Pamela Hazlett, Colorado Springs; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, three sisters and three brothers.
Private services will be administered by the Neptune Society. In the spring, Col. Millar will be memorialized at Arlington National cemetery
in Washington, D.C.

Calvin Everette Oliver,

Calvin Everette Oliver of Lewes, 41, died Tuesday, March 6, 2007, in his home.
Mr. Oliver was born Sept. 7, 1965, in Lewes.
He received his early education in the Cape Henlopen School District. He received his high school diploma while attending the Job Corps in Virginia.
He worked part time at Manleys Antiques in Lewes for many years until his illness prevented him from working.
He attended Eagles Nest Church. While he was a patient at Christiana Hospital, he accepted Jesus Christ as his savior. He was known for his willingness to help others and his favorite saying, “You don’t worry until I worry.”
He is survived by a sister who raised him, Beatrice Oliver of Lewes; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Norman and Patsy Oliver of Salisbury, Md., George and Stelena Oliver of Millsboro, Linwood and Joan Oliver, William Bruce Oliver and his fiancée, Dolores of Dover; a special sister-in-law with whom he lived, J.W.; a stepson, Doug Martin of Elkton, Md.; his special friend, Mary Hurt; an aunt, Dorothy White; and a host of nieces, nephews cousins and friends.
Services were Monday, March 12, in Burton’s Chapel A.M.E. Church in Milton.
Burial was in Old Field cemetery , Millsboro.
Elizabeth N. McSpadden,
retired teacher
Elizabeth Newton McSpadden of Slaughter Beach, 85, passed away Friday, March 9, 2007, in Beebe Medical Center.
Mrs. McSpadden was born Dec. 2, 1921, in Bridgeville, daughter of the late Warren C. and Elizabeth (Eggert) Newton.
She was a graduate of the University of Delaware in the early 1940s.
Mrs. McSpadden was an elementary school teacher.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, R. Doyle McSpadden in 1997; and a son, J. Gregory McSpadden in 1978.
She is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, William H. and Shawna McSpadden of Slaughter Beach, and Warren D. and Bonnie McSpadden of Warners, N.Y.; a daughter and a son-in-law, Margaret M. and Lee Lewis of Rocky Mount, N.C.; two grandchildren, Kristie Lewis and Ryan Lewis; and a sister, Joanna N. Conaway and her husband, William of Ocean View.
A graveside service was held Monday, March 12, in Bridgeville cemetery . The Rev. Dale Brown officiated.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 163, Salisbury, MD 21803-0163.
Sarah J. Salin,
civic volunteer
Sarah J. Salin, 82, a five-year resident of Greenspring Village retirement community in Springfield, Va., died there Feb. 26, 2007, three days before her 61st wedding anniversary, of a malignant pancreatic tumor.
Mrs. Salin was born in Everett, Wash., and after her marriage in 1946 resided in Chevy Chase, Md., and Oxon Hill, Md., before moving to Rehoboth Beach in 1984.
Noted for her excellence in needlework, she had also served as a volunteer clerical worker at the National Institutes of Health, Andrews Air Force Base library and the City of Alexandria, Va. She was a member of the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society and a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Salin of the home address; her children, Sigrid J. Beeckman of Springfield, Va., Robert “Robin” K. Salin Jr. of Clovis, Calif., Gretchen A. Delagrange of Wellington, Fla., Stephen L. Salin of Southlake, Texas, Philip A. Salin of Washington, D.C., and Lisa L. Len of Bangkok, Thailand; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
At her request there will be no funeral or memorial service, but a family gathering will be held at a later date in Rehoboth Beach where her ashes will be scattered in the surf.

Florine Huger Hayes,
renowned artist
Florine Huger “Tua” Hayes, 90, died Friday, March 2, 2007, at Cokesbury Village in Hockessin. She owned a home in Lewes.
Tua Hayes was a well-known Delaware artist, having exhibited her paintings at the Delaware Art Museum, the Philadelphia Art Alliance, the National Academy of Design and numerous other exhibits in the Delaware Valley and on Hilton Head Island, S.C. Her works are currently on exhibit at the Josephine Keir Gallery in Lewes. She is a past president of the Studio Group in Wilmington, a past member of the board of directors of the Delaware Art Museum and is listed in “Who’s Who in American Art.”
Mrs. Hayes was born in Anniston, Ala., and graduated from Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C. as an art major. She did graduate work in art education at Teacher’s College of Columbia University.
Her paintings are in collections at the Wilmington Trust Company, the Wilmington Society of the Fine Arts, the University of Delaware, Converse College, the Bank of Delaware and numerous private collections.
Survivors include her son, Stephen and daughter-in-law Barbara Hanke Hayes of Alexandria, Va.; two grandchildren; and her sister Ruth Huger Boozer of Anniston, Ala. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Delaware Art Museum, 2301 Kentmere Parkway, Wilmington, DE 19806.
Carol Ann B. Connaway,

Carol Ann Barker Connaway, 60, of Lewes, died suddenly on Sunday, March 4, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes. Mrs. Connaway was born March 15, 1946 in Lewes, the daughter of William Barker of Lewes and the late Edna Mae Dickerson Barker.
Mrs. Connaway was a member of the Class of 1964, Lewes High School. She proudly stated that she was a Lewes native. Carol Ann was a former member of the Lewes Volunteer Fire Department Ambulance service and a current member of the Lewes Yacht Club. She enjoyed being around the water and was an avid reader. She worked 17 years for Beebe Medical Center, retiring in 1998 as supervisor of communications. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and thoroughly enjoyed life.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her son, Robert Dickson. She is survived by her loving husband of 20 years, Elberon T. “Tim” Connaway; two daughters, Wendy Wall and her husband Bart of Lewes and Terri Lynn Cooke and her husband Bob of Dover; three stepsons, Elberon Connaway III of Vermont, Christopher B. Connaway and Shawn M. Connaway and his wife Cindy, both of Wrightsville Beach, N.C.; and six grandchildren, Judson Wall, Timothy Wall, Robert Cooke, Ty Connaway, Hannah Connaway and Jacob Connaway.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday, March 10, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Hwy., Lewes, where the family will receive friends starting at 3 p.m. Interment will be private.
Elizabeth Irene Kenney,
former Eagles dietician
Elizabeth Irene Morse Kenney, 89, died peacefully Tuesday, March 6, 2007, surrounded by her loving family, after a brief illness.
She was raised in Wilmington, the daughter of the late David G. Morse and Irene Hayes Morse. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert B. Kenney, in 1973. She was a graduate of Ursuline Academy and Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia.
In her career, she was chief dietician at the Graduate Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and chief dietician of Lankenau Hospital, both in Philadelphia. She was also dietician for the Philadelphia Eagles football team and for many years, she was an administrative dietician at the Wilmington Hospital of the Medical Center of Delaware, now Christiana Care. During her life, she was a benefactress to numerous charities and institutions.
She is survived by her son, Thomas, of Wilmington and Rehoboth Beach; her sister-in-law, Mrs. Clotilde Morse of Levittown, Pa.; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
Friends are invited to visitation from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, March 11, at Mealey Funeral Home, 703 N. Broom St., Wilmington. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Monday, March 12, at St. Ann’s Church, Gilpin and Union streets, Wilmington. Interment will follow at Cathedral cemetery , Wilmington.
Dorothy K. Duffy,
retired from Acme
Dorothy K. Duffy, 88, formerly of Utah Rd., Wilmington, passed away Monday, March 5, 2007, at Regal Heights, Hockessin, surrounded by her loving family.
Mrs. Duffy worked in the meat department for Acme Markets for 35 years retiring in 1983. She was a member of VFW Post 2863 in Richardson Park and the Mentow Baptist Church in Huddleston, Va. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt and will be greatly missed. She was known for her devotion to her family and her unconditional love and generosity.
She is survived by her son, T. Wayne Barbour and his wife, Val, of Bellingham, Mass.; her daughter, Felice M. Stone and her husband, Robert, of Rehoboth Beach; her grandchildren, Laurie Eriksen and her husband, Knute, of Hockessin, Rob Stone, of Tokyo, Japan, and Randy Stone, of Wilmington; two very special great-grandchildren, Kyle and Kevin; and her nephews, David Karnes, whom she raised, of Wilmington, and J. Michael Karnes of Roanoke, Va.
Services and burial will be private.

Ronald E. Ward Sr.,

Ronald E. Ward Sr., 44, of Milton, passed away Saturday, March 3, 2007.
Born Aug. 7, 1962, he was the son of Janet Hearne and Ronald Robinson.
He was preceded in death by his adoptive parents, James and Maude Thompson, his maternal grandparents, Richard and Louise Ward, and his paternal grandfather, Joseph Seymour.
Ronnie worked as a cook and delivery driver for Grotto Pizza in Long Neck. He started his career with the Lewes Board of Public Works in the water department. For 10 years, he was a member of the Lewes Fire Department, achieving the rank of captain.
Those left behind to remember Ronnie include his son, Ronald E. Ward Jr., his special K-Byrd; his parents, Janet Hearne of Milton and Ronald Robinson of Lewes; his grandparents, the Rev. and Mrs. Collins Washington of Lewes; his siblings, Michelle D. Ward of Milton, Teresa Johnson of Milton, Adrian Jones of Lewes, Maria Perkins of Frankford, Rick Ward of Lewes, Trudy Maker of Lewes, Jeanann Stockley of Baltimore, Md. and a special friend, Denise Dowbell of Ellicott City, Md. He also leaves behind a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and coworkers.
Services will be Saturday, March 10. A viewing will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the funeral to follow immediately afterward, at St. John the 2nd Baptist Church, Mount Joy, Millsboro. Interment will be at Friendship cemetery
in Lewes and family and friends are invited to fellowship at the Lewes Fire Department, Station 2 in Nassau, at the conclusion.
