Doris Mae Davis,
Rehoboth Beach native
Doris Mae Webb Davis, 74, of Lewes, died Sunday, April 15, 2007, at Harbor Healthcare Center in Lewes, surrounded by her family. Doris was born July 4, 1932, in Rehoboth Beach, daughter of the late John H. and Ruth Maise Biederman Webb.
She was a 1949 graduate of Rehoboth High School.
Mrs. Davis was a homemaker. She loved egg crafting, needlepoint and crocheting.
She also enjoyed attending tournaments at Midway Slots in Harrington.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Janet Webb Tagtmeier, and her brother, Charles (Jay) Webb.
She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, James T. Davis of Lewes; three sons and their wives, Richard H. Ieppert and Susan Lodge Ieppert of Lewes, James T. Davis Jr. and Theresa A. Davis of Lewes, Todd W. Davis and Connie Davis of Salida, Colo.; two daughters, Joyce A. Pennucci and her husband Joseph of Milton and Kimberly Mae Davis Pezely of Lewes; two sisters, Kathleen Hall of Tampa, Fla., and Joan Martin of Lewes; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held in the chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery
South in Millsboro.
John W. Whitty,
insurance agency owner
John W. Whitty, 80, of Milton, died Friday, April 13, 2007, at his residence. Mr. Whitty was born in Hartford, Conn., son of the late John W. and Alice Wall Whitty. He was in the insurance industry all of his working life and was owner of the J.W. Whitty Insurance Agency in Connecticut for 45 years. He retired in 1997 and moved to Milton in September 2003. His son and son-in-law are the owners of Dynamic Mortgage in Rehoboth Beach. Mr. Whitty served in the U.S. Navy during WWII with the rank of machinist’s mate 3rd class.
He was a member of the Rotary Club and an avid golfer and reader.
Most dear to him were his loving wife and family. He is survived by his wife, Diane M. Lent Whitty; four daughters, Laura, Elizabeth, Diane Marie and Katie; six sons, David, Dennis, John, Stephen, Chris and Ray; one sister, Laura Connelly of Glastonbury, Conn.; two brothers, Tom Whitty of Sarasota, Fla., and Robert Whitty of West Yarmouth, Mass.; 21 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
No one could have loved his family more than Jack Whitty and no one was loved more in return.
Services were private. Memorial contributions are suggested to Delaware Hospice, 20167 Office Circle, Georgetown, DE 19947.
Dolores B. Liggett,
enjoyed bowling, family
Dolores B. Liggett, 76, of Lincoln, passed away Sunday, April 15, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
Dolores was born Oct. 2, 1930, in Dayton, Ky., daughter of the late Joseph and Dorothy O’Keefe Brown.
Mrs. Liggett moved to Delaware in 1996 and enjoyed bowling and spending time with her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia L. Bruch in 2005; a sister, Vera Russell; and two grandchildren. Dolores is survived by her husband of 57 years, Ronald C. Liggett; her children, Timothy Liggett and wife Virginia of Clearwater, Fla., Michael Liggett and Linda Jones of Lincoln, Karen Liggett Burgess and husband David of Winchester, Va. and Phillip Liggett of Milton; a sister, Jane Fitzpatrick of Erlanger, Ky.; and seven grandchildren.
Services were held in Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes, with Deacon John Smith officiating.
Interment was in Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery
in Millsboro.
Joseph Henry Bailey,
Townsend’s supervisor
Joseph “Joe” Henry Bailey, 76, son of the late James Bailey and Maggie Ann Mitchell Bailey of Cape Charles, Va., died Friday, April 13, 2007, at his home in Millsboro, surrounded by his family. He was born April 7, 1931, and was unable to finish his education because of the need to help out the family. Even though he had minimal education, he was still able to become a successful lawn care business owner for over 31 years and a supervisor at Townsend’s Inc. for 20 years.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 27 years, Emma Margaret “Debbie” Thompson Bailey; and two sisters, Betty Bailey of Pennsylvania and Maggie Hall of Seaford.
He leaves four daughters, Melissa Bailey Bridell and her husband Dortan, whom he lived with, Melinda Bailey Wright and her husband Carl, Celina Snead and her devoted friend Lennel Ayers, Linda Hatchett and her husband Anthony; a brother, Clarence Bailey; a sister, Connie Robinson of Pennsylvania; 11 grandchildren, Tylissa, Debra, Debra, Lesslie, Aubre, Star, Amber, Christin, Carla, Deja, and Robert; seven great-grandchildren, Shawn, Jaylyn, Michael, Christian, Jamie, Curtis and Aniles; and two nieces’ husbands, Kenneth Frazier and Curtis Fuhr. He also leaves behind two dear friends, James “Chief” Chandler and Bartola “BigLoader” Gray.
Services were held at Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro.
Willard M. Marvel,
avid cyclist
Willard Madison Marvel, of Cary, N.C., formerly of Milton, passed away Easter Sunday, April 8, 2007, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, N.C., after a long and courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral slcerosis, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Will was born in Milton, the son of Ruth Reed Marvel and the late Harry W. Marvel.
He served in the U.S. Air Force for eight years before completing a degree in computer science. He was a manager in the technical support division of Perdue Inc. for the last 17 years of his career.
Will had a passion for cycling, and before his illness he and his wife spent many hours riding their tandem bicycle.
Will was an active member of Genesis United Methodist Church in Cary, N.C.. He was a devoted son, father and friend.
In addition to his mother, Will is survived by his cherished wife, Carol Adams; two children, Sharon Johnston and Jeffrey Marvel and his wife Blair; two stepchildren, Kimberly Small and Clayton Small and his wife Ann; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Marion Marvel and Phillip and Beverly Marvel; a sister and brother- in-law, Amy and Carlton Smith; five nieces, Bethany Marvel, Courtney Marvel, Katie Marvel, Kelly Marvel and Natalie Marvel; and a nephew, Jake Smith. A tireless champion for quality living with ALS, Will inspired all who knew him. He was a role model for many affected by this terrible disease and kept his wry sense of humor. He spent much of his time involved with ALS support groups, planning fundraisers and participating in ALS Advocacy Days in Washington, D.C.
Although Will’s presence will always be with us, he will be greatly missed. A celebration of Will’s life will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 21, in Grace Church, 514 Union St., Milton. Will would want to be remembered by donations to the ALS Association, c/o Jim “Catfish” Hunter Chapter, 120-101 Penmarc Dr., Raleigh, N.C. 27603.
James Bohan,
retired mail carrier
James Bohan, 78, of Lewes, died Wednesday, April 11, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
Mr. Bohan was born in Prospect Park, Pa. Nov. 2, 1928, son of the late Joseph and Hulda White Bohan. He had been employed as a mail carrier by the U.S. Postal Service for many years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II in the area of atomic bomb testing. Mr. Bohan was a member of American Legion Post 28, Millsboro, the VFW Post 7447 of Rehoboth Beach, The AMVETS and the Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge, both of Lewes. He visited these service clubs each day and the folks at these organizations were like a family to him. Mr. Bohan enjoyed life to the fullest. He loved to walk the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk in the early morning. Mr. Bohan was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth K. Bohan, in 1999; three brothers, Thomas Bohan, William Bohan and Chuck Bohan; and one sister, Ruth Barker.
He is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and many friends from the service clubs.
Services will be private. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Legion Post 28, Millsboro DE 19966.

Almeda I. Pepper,
retired bus driver
Barbara “Almeda” Isaacs Pepper passed away peacefully at home, Sunday, April 15, 2007. Almeda was the daughter of the late J. Howard Isaacs of Milford and the late Madalyn E. Swain Seeger of New Castle County. She was a graduate of Georgetown High School and graduated from Goldey Beacom in 1955. Almeda was a gifted homemaker and was devoted to raising her family and caring for others.
For over 25 years, she drove children to and from school for the Indian River School District, until she retired in the late 90s due to her declining health.
She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and Providence United Methodist Church, both in Georgetown.
She is survived by her husband of over 51 years, David Martin Pepper; a brother, John S. Isaacs of California; half sisters, Nancy Kimbro of Dover, Hilda Lankford and husband William of Milton and Karlyn Musante and husband Jim of Malibu, Calif.
She will be dearly missed by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her five little Peppers are M. Lee Pepper and his wife Peggy, D. Randy Pepper and his wife Mary-Beth, Connie A. Moore and her husband Dave, Beth P. Beck and her husband Jon and her estranged son, Howard I. Pepper.
Her grandchildren brought much joy to her world and they included Tyna Lynch and her husband Keith, David and Cody Pepper, Amanda Dorey, Melanie Moore, Benjamin Beck and Alec and Savannah Beck. She was blessed to have two great-granddaughters, Kelsey and Makayla Pepper-Lynch. Her entire family still resides within 10 miles of each other in Georgetown. Almeda also had two special friends she loved like family, Mary Louise Workman of Georgetown and Elma Parsons of Lincoln.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, April 19, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, where friends may call after noon. Interment will be held at Union cemetery , Georgetown.

William ‘Bill’ E. Wright,
law practitioner
William “Bill” E. Wright, 64, longtime resident of Dewey Beach and recently Kings Creek in Rehoboth Beach, passed away Monday, April 16, 2007, at his residence. Born Oct. 22, 1942, he was the son of Superior Court Judge Caleb and Katherine McAfee Wright.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Wright; and his three children, Andrew Wright, Joanna White and Tory Wright; his brothers, Thomas and Scott Wright; and sister, Victoria Wright; grandchildren Madison and Emily Wright, Caleb White and Eloise White-Ramon.
Bill graduated from the University of Delaware and obtained his doctor of law from the University of North Carolina.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and returned to work as a prosecutor in the Wilmington Attorney General’s Office. He was part of the law firm of Terry, Terry, Spence and Wright and later became a sole practitioner when partner Max Terry was appointed to the bench as a judge.
He practiced law locally and was the first town attorney for the Town of Dewey Beach when it was incorporated in 1981.
In addition to being active in local affairs, he is a past president of the Dewey Beach Lions Club and was the treasurer for the Bill Lee for Governor campaign.
Bill enjoyed boating, spending time with his wife Pat and their many friends.
He especially loved playing with his grandchildren and will be remembered for his humor and honesty. He will be missed by many.
A celebration of Bill’s life will be announced at a later date.

Thomas E. Hodgson Sr., 64, of Lewes, died Thursday, April 12, 2007.
He was a self-employed painter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Sarah Hodgson. He is survived by his children, Thomas E. Hodgson Jr. of Wilmington, Brenda Gravatt of Newark and Cheryl Strootman and husband Pat of Newark; four brothers; three sisters; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services and burial will be private. Arrangements by Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro.
Pearl Holland Hood,
retired teacher
Pearl Ceresia Holland Hood, 95, of Lewes was born Oct. 26, 1911, daughter of Nehemiah and Minnie Holland. She departed this life Wednesday, April 11, 2007, in the Lewes Convalescent Center.
She was born in Pinetown. She attended school in Milton and then went to Delaware State College, Temple University, Rutgers University and the University of Delaware to obtain her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education.
Pearl married Grafton Hood in Jan. 1932, and they raised two children.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Helene Ward; a brother, Abraham White; two grandsons, Brian Perry Sr. and Steven Hood; and a granddaughter, Stacie Hood.
Pearl was employed as a school teacher for more than 34 years. She taught school at Blackwater-Frankford, Phillip C. Showell in Selbyville, Milton Elementary, H.O.B. Elementary School in Milton and summer Head Start in Milford, and worked at the Stockley Center and Pressing Factory in Milton.
She dedicated her life to Christ at Burton Chapel A.M.E. Church and then moved to Bethel A.M.E. Church in Milton, where she remained faithful until the end. She was a member of the senior choir, stewardess board, steward board, trustee board and missionary society, past Y.P.D. director, past secretary of the official board of the church, past president of the lay organization - which she started at the church, past secretary of the quarterly conference, past chairman of the Delaware conference memorial committee and also sang in the Delaware conference choir.
Pearl was a member of the Eastern Star and the AKA Sorority. She was also a member of the National Council of Negro Women, Sussex County Arts Council, Lewes Senior Center and Slaughter Neck CHEER Center. She attended the Gull House in Rehoboth Beach and was a volunteer at the Lewes Convalescent Center and Harbor Health Care. She also was a board member of the former Milton Day Care Center.
During her last couple of years, she became a Cape Henlopen boys varsity basketball fan. She enjoyed going to all the games, both home and away, and called the players “her boys.” She was always proud of them, regardless of the outcome of the games.
Pearl leaves to cherish her memorable life two children, Thomas Hood of Coatesville, Pa., and Pearl Cannon of Milton; five grandchildren, Sharon Green (AJ), Thomas Hood Jr., Sheila Hood, Sabrina Copeland (David) and Ceresia Cannon (Thomas Messick); 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two nephews, Ralph Holland and Herman White; five nieces, Naomi Perry, Eleanor Reed, Ruth Turner, Grace Thomas and Thelma White; a brother-in-law, James Hood; and a host of other family members.
She will be sadly missed by many treasured family members and friends.
Services will be 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 17, in the Bethel A.M.E. Church, Mulberry Street, Milton, where friends may call two hours before the service. The Rev. Lamont Harmon will officiate.
