Edgar “Snookie” Smith,

Edgar Milton “Snookie” Smith, 76, of Lewes, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004.
Mr. Smith was born July 11, 1928 in Upper Marlboro, Md., the son of the late Milton and Gladys (Kerr) Smith.
He had been employed for 31 years as a Rights of Way Agent for the Department of Public Works & Transportation, in Prince Georges County, Md. Prior to that he had worked for the Washington D.C. Police Department and for the White House Police during the Eisenhower Administration. Mr. Smith was a life member of the Glenn Dale Fire Association in Glenn Dale, Md .
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Margaret (Hall) Smith of Lewes; two daughters, Debbie and Susan; two sons, Timmy and his wife Tammy Smith and Mark and his wife Sherry Smith; and nine grandchildren, Jennifer, Steve, Robbie, Christopher, Bobby,
Tiffany, Matthew, Jessie and Jamie.
Visitation hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday Oct. 26, at Parsell Funeral Homes, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 27, at Mary Mother of Peace Catholic Church, Route 24, Oak Orchard, with Father Dan McCloskey officiating. Interment will follow in All Saints cemetery , Angola.

Hoyt Harrison Hitchens,

Hoyt Harrison Hitchens, 86, a lifelong resident of Georgetown, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004 at Bayhealth at Milford Memorial.
Mr. Hitchens was a supervisor for the Delaware Department of Transportation for many years, retiring in 1980. He enjoyed playing cards, selling used cars and visiting the sick. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Hitchens, in 1973; a live-in companion, Emma Stevenson; a brother; and two sisters.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Joan Hitchens and Bill and Shirley Hitchens; a daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Ronnie Mumford; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Bernice Hitchens and Don and Sydney Hitchens. All of these relatives are from Georgetown. He is also survived by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Marie and Robert Ellingsworth and Kathryn Meredith, all of Ellendale; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 24, at Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, where friends may call at noon. Burial will be in Union cemetery , Georgetown.

Blanche M. Joseph,
retired seamstress
Blanche M. Joseph, 92, of Millsboro, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at Harbor Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Lewes.
Mrs. Joseph was born in Millsboro and was a retired seamstress. She was employed by Evadnes Dress Shop in Lewes for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Moulten B. Joseph, in 1976.
She is survived by her son, Rufus Joseph; a daughter, Nancy Burbage; three grandsons, two step grandsons; two granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 22, at the Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Road, Millsboro, where friends may call after 1 p.m. Burial will be in Bethel Methodist cemetery , Lewes.

Raymond MacCrory,
computer programmer
Raymond (John) MacCrory, 69, of Rehoboth Beach, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
Mr. MacCrory was born on Dec. 20, 1934, in Philadelphia, Pa. He resided in Glendora, N.J. , and graduated from Haddenfield High School. He spent three years of active duty in the U.S. Army. Most of his career was spent as a computer programmer/ analyst, contract specialist for the U.S. Department of Energy, retiring in 1990. He had also been part time owner of Prince George’s Engraving, retiring in 1999 when he moved to Rehoboth Beach. He worked for two summers with the Dewey Beach Police Department. He was an esteemed member of the Jaycees in New Jersey, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland and was a member of the VA J.C.I Senate.
He is survived by his wife Jean MacCrory; three children, Dennis, Wayne and Karen; and two sisters, Margaret Maxson and Helene Burris.
Services were held at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior.

Robert S. Wright III,
NCR district manager
Robert S. Wright III, 79, of Palm Springs, Calif., died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, in Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. He had been a Palm Springs resident for 40 years.
Mr. Wright was born in Chester, Pa., the son of the late Robert Spencer Wright Jr. and Roberta Rhodes Wright.
He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II from 1943 to 1946. He was a district service manager for National Cash Register Corp. (NCR) for 43 years before his retirement. He was a charter member of the Desert Island Country Club in Palm Springs from 1972 until his death. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 0519 and Elks Lodge 1905 in Palm Springs.
He is survived by a son, Robert H. Wright, and his wife Carol of Lewes; a sister, Anne Wright Harrison, and her husband Jerry of West Chester, Pa.; a brother, Richard D. Wright and his wife, Jane of Wilmington; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Nolan-Fidale Funeral Home, 2316 Providence Ave., Chester, Pa. Burial will be in Lawn Croft cemetery , Linwood, Pa. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

Elizabeth Rhodes,

Elizabeth “Betty” Rhodes, 80, of Springfield, Pa., died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, in Springfield.
Mrs. Rhodes was born Jan. 25, 1924, in Philadelphia, daughter of the late George Leslie Gooden and Lucile Satterfield Gooden.
She played clarinet in the band and piano with the chorus at Dover High School, Dover, from which she graduated in 1941. In 1945, she graduated from Lebanon Valley College in Annville, where she was a music major.
After college, she returned home to Dover, where she taught piano and played the organ at People’s United Church of Christ. In 1947, she married the love of her life, Kenneth Rhodes, who was a native of England. They moved to Havertown, Pa., and raised three children and continued, successfully, to pursue their love of music. She played the organ in Church of the Covenant and Ebenezer, while Mr. Rhodes taught piano and accompanied various club bands. Sadly, Mr. Rhodes died peacefully while he and Mrs. Rhodes were visiting England in 1991.
Mrs. Rhodes was a lover of animals and an avid bridge player. She enjoyed the time she had with her children every summer vacation in New Hampshire. She was very lucky to have her oldest son, Douglas and his wife, Pat. They were always there to lend a hand.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Pat Rhodes of Drexel Hill, Pa., and Stewart and Susan Rhodes of Harrisburg; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Chuck Kessler of Kenosha, Wis.; five grandchildren, Griffin Rhodes and Alaina Rhodes, both of Harrisburg, and Eric Kessler, Joy Kessler and Julie Kessler, all of Kenosha; a sister, Sarah Hastings of Dover; two nephews, Jeff Hastings of Dover and David Hastings of Rehoboth Beach; and three nieces, Beth Hastings, Carol Hastings and Nancy Jaywork of Dover.
Services were held in Ebenezer Church, Havertown, with burial in Valley Forge Memorial Gardens.
Harry C. Schrader,
Air Force veteran
Harry C. (Chriss) Schrader, 64, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004.
Chris was the son of Charles and Sara Jane and the loving husband of Irene.
He was born in Cannonsburg, Pa., and was a resident of Verona and Penn Hills, Pa. for over 40 years. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and a member of the Iron Workers Union Local 3 in Pittsburgh. Since the mid-80’s, Chriss had resided in Ocean-Pines/Berlin, Md., Stroudsburg, Pa., and Millville/Dagsboro, De.
Chriss is survived by his wife, Irene; brothers, Charles and Gordon; sister, Barbara; sons, Ronald, Daniel and David; and grandchildren, Hayden and Paige.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 22, at 11 a.m. at the Bethany Chapel of Melson Funeral Services on West Ave. in Ocean View. Interment will be in Mariner’s Bethel cemetery
in Ocean View.

Timoteo (Billy) Baiz

Timoteo (Billy) Baiz, 73, of Millsboro, formerly of Rehoboth Beach, died Monday, Oct. 11, 2004 in his home.
Baiz was born Jan. 24, 1931, in Puerto Rico.
He is survived by his guardian and longtime friend, Adonest J. Hall Sr. of Millsboro.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, in the home of his friend, Hall, at 24909 Cannon Road, Millsboro.
Burial will be private.

Elaine K. Downey
Contract bridge player
Elaine K. Downey, 78, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at Christiana Hospital.
She joined her husband, William F. Downey, Sr. and her eldest son, William F. Downey, Jr., who passed away on Mar. 5, 2004.
Downey was born in Cleveland, Oh., but spent over 50 years in De. She enjoyed anything with bright, warm sunlight, and golf, travel and spending time at the beach. Downey was an avid reader, but her passion was playing cards. She attained the Life Master Level of Contract Bridge, a distinction she shared with her husband. Downey was also an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathy LaFashia and her daughter, Antoinette, of Wilmington; son, Brian Downey, Sr. and his wife, Joy, of Newark and their children, Brian and Jeff (twins), Deanna and Brad; daughter, Karen Stoppel of New Castle, with whom she lived, and her children, Melissa, Leigh and Matthew and Mark (twins); son, Blair Downey of Dover and his children, Blair Jr. and Christopher; daughter, Robin Satterly and her husband, Jeff, of Key West, Fl., and their children, Erik, Robin and Rachel (twins); son, Bobby Downey and his wife, Susan, of San Antonio, Tx. And their children, Tara, Robert, Jr., Chase, Alexandra and Elizabeth; son, Michael Downey and his wife, Denise, of Wilmington and their children, Ashley and Alexis; granddaughter, Allison Downey of Lewes, daughter of the late Bill, Jr.; 10 great grandchildren; and twin brother and sister, Bernard Kennedy of Az., and Bernadine Savage of Fl.
A funeral service was held at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle.
Interment will be private.
William E. Hudson,

William E. Hudson, 74, of Selbyville, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Irma Williams Hudson, in 1991; his father and mother, Elisha and Gladys Hudson; and his sister, Lois H. Stevens.
Bill was a retired self-employed painter and also owned Hudson’s Sonoco on Route 50 for 20 years.
He is survived by his long-time companion, Doti Balenger of Selbyville; two daughters, ToRue Spicer of Dagsboro and Caryn Duncan of Selbyville; two grandsons, C.R. Smith and his wife, Amy, of Milton, Ricky Duncan of Selbyville; and a great-grandson, Jake Smith of Milton.
A private graveside service will be held at Roxana cemetery
for family members only. The Rev. Fred Duncan will officiate.
