Olivia ‘Candy’ Hudson,

Olivia Draper “Candy” Hudson, 76, of Harbeson, died Monday, April 9, 2007, at Bayhealth/Milford Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Hudson was born in Milton, the daughter of the late Grover C. and Ella Brittingham Draper.
Along with her husband, she owned & operated Douglas C. Hudson Construction Co. and several other businesses throughout the years.
She was a member of the Harbeson U.M. Church, the United Methodist Women, the church choir, Order of the Eastern Star in Georgetown, Coolspring Couples Club and served as secretary for the Harbeson cemetery
Corp. She was a volunteer for Coastal Hospice and numerous other organizations. Candy was treasurer of the Harbeson Extension Homemakers Club and held many other offices. As a member of the Delaware Assoc. for Family Community Education, she was the past state president, newsletter editor/publisher and served on the national nominations board. She was on the advisory board for the research and education center of the University of Delaware in Georgetown.
She enjoyed spending many summers at Broadkill Beach.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas C. Hudson, in 1986 and three sisters, Grace Millman, Clara Robinson and Esther Morris.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law Wayne D. and Bonnie Hudson of Milton and Wade R. Sr. and Jackie Hudson of Milton; a daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline H. and Ray McCabe of Berlin, Md.; fiancé Gene E. Melvin of Harbeson; a sister, Ruth Tyndall of Millsboro; four grandchildren, Wade R. “Buddy” Hudson Jr., Heather H. Leonard and her husband Charles, Holly L. Hudson and her fiancé Robert Read, Draper R. McCabe and his fiancé Sarah Massey; step-grandchildren, Lisa Garrison and Allen Callaway; step-great-grandchildren, Noah Garrison and Liam Garrison. Aunt Candy was very special to all of her nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 14, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call after noon. Interment will be in Harbeson cemetery.

Henry G. Krause,
retired pipe fitter
Henry G. Krause, 74, of Millsboro, died Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Born in Wilmington, he was the son of the late Mark R. and Mary Thompson Krause.
Mr. Krause was a pipe fitter with Local 80 and served as a pipe fitter for 50 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served on the USS Randolf during the Korean War.
He was a member of American Legion Post 24 and a member of the Armstrong Masonic Lodge No. 26 in Newport.
He was devoted to his family and loved his grandchildren and was an avid Eagles fan. He loved dogs and was a good man.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mildred L. Krause; two sons, Keith B. Krause and his wife Crystal of Millsboro and Robert K. Krause of Charleston, S.C.; a daughter, Mary Lou Krause of Millsboro; sisters Mary Lou Bach and her husband Jack and Kitty Ann Toy; a sister-in-law, Ruth Krause; six grandchildren, Steph, Alicia, Karen, Bob, Sean and Cameron; four great-grandchildren, Ashley, Lillian, Haley and Taylor; many nieces and nephews; and his loving dogs, Bubba and Ginger.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mark Krause, in 2002.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, April 13, at Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery , Millsboro, with the Rev. Bob Hudson officiating.
Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Friday at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro.
James A. Beran,

James A. Beran, 63, of Rehoboth Beach, died Sunday, April 8, 2007, in Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Md.
Mr. Beran was born in Baltimore, the son of the late John Beran and Mary Weir Beran.
John was proud to serve his country in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 7447 and a member of Cape Henlopen Elks Post 2540 and American Legion Post 17.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Beran Jr.; and his uncle, Frank Weir of Rehoboth Beach.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marie; five children and 16 grandchildren.
Services will be held in Baltimore.

Thelma E. Josephson,

Thelma E. (Denn) Josephson, 89, of Rehoboth Beach, died Monday, April 9, 2007, at her residence.
Mrs. Josephson was born in Wilmington and formerly lived in Union Park Gardens. She was the daughter of the Late Clayton J. and Florence E. (Berg) Denn.
She was a graduate of Wilmington High School and had been employed as a bookkeeper at Colonial National Bank until she retired in 1979. She taught Sunday school at St. Andrews Episcopal Church for 18 years.
Mrs. Josephson was predeceased by her husband, Bernard W. Josephson, in 1957. She is survived by two daughters, Joanne E. Keller and her husband Ray of Rehoboth Beach, with whom she lived; and Judy Shaw and her husband Jay of Oro Valley, Ariz.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Graveside services were private at Silverbrook cemetery , Wilmington.
Bernard J. Kossek,
Post Office retiree
Bernard J. Kossek, 88, of Lewes, passed away Monday, April 9, 2007.
Bernard retired from the main Post Office at Quigley Blvd. in 1982, where he worked in maintenance. Prior to that he worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad on 30th Street, Wilmington as a 1st class welder. Bernard was in the Army in World War II as a staff sergeant. He was attached to the 895th Air Force. He served in Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland.
Bernard is survived by his dedicated and loving wife, (Anastasia) Alice J. (Pajrowski) Kossek of Lewes, with whom he was married to for 62 wonderful years; his only son, Larry B. Kossek of Lewes; his only daughter, Bernadette J. Robinson and her husband, Frank H. Robinson Jr., of Clayton; three grandsons, Wesley F. Robinson, Gregory A. Robinson and Raymond P. Robinson, all of Clayton.
He was preceded in death by his three brothers, Leo Kossek, John Kossek and Frank Kossek; his four sisters, Kate Dalecki, Mary (Pusey) Larrimore, Victoria Horn, and Helen Mosiej; his father, Bernard Kossek and his mother Anna (Miedzianowska) Kossek. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at at St. John the Beloved Church, Wilmington, with interment at All Saints cemetery , Wilmington.

Ruth Maxine Huber, 86, of Millsboro, died Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at Green Valley Terrace Nursing Home in Millsboro.
She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 54 years, William Huber, in 1992. Mrs. Huber was born in New Castle, Pa., daughter of Ray and Georgiana Beard Cartwright. She moved to Millsboro with her husband in 1980. Ruth was a member of Lewes Presbyterian Church and was a lifelong member of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Huber is survived by three sons, Robert D. Watkins of Calabash, N.C., John D. Watkins of Roxana and William R. Huber of Stafford, Va.; eight grandchildren, Eric Watkins, Robin Watkins, David Huber, Jodie Watkins, Heather McCabe, Melanie Watkins, Scott Huber, Shawn Watkins; four great-grandchildren; and Mrs. Huber’s two sisters, Jean Watkins of New Castle, Pa. and Dorie Buckley of Pittsburgh, Pa. Jay Marshall Bunting,

Jay Marshall Bunting, 83, of Dagsboro, passed away April 10, 2007, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md. Mr. Bunting was born Nov. 24, 1923, in Dagsboro, the son of the late John M. and Sarah Emma Godfrey Bunting. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy. Mr. Bunting retired in 1978 after 30 years of service as the supervisor of the Georgetown and Dover offices of the Internal Revenue Service. He was an umpire for high school baseball, softball and the Lower Sussex Little League for 40 years and was inducted into the Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003.
Jay is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Gladys Hill Bunting; a son, Jay M. Bunting Jr. and his wife Robin of Greensboro, N.C.; two sisters-in-law, Charlotte Hill and Janet Jennings; a brother-in-law, Jack Hill; three nephews, Norman Bunting and wife Sandra, Franklin Bunting and wife Nina Lou, and Conrad Zink and wife Cathy; a niece, Gloria Blades and husband Charles; and two grandchildren, Ashley and Chase Bunting. A funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, April 15, at Mariner’s Bethel United Methodist Church, 81 Central Ave., Ocean View, where friends may call after 12:30 p.m. Interment will be in Redmen’s Memorial cemetery

Roy R. Adams,

Roy R. Adams, 89, of Denton, Md., passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at Memorial Hospital in Easton, Md.
Born March 22, 1918, near Bridgeville, Adams was the son of Orrie and Minnie Collison Adams. He owned the Adams Feed Co. and the Adams and Wright Hardware, both in Denton, as well as the Adams Oceanfront Motel in Dewey Beach. He co-owned the Redwood Lodge and Southwinds Motel in Dewey Beach in the 1960s. He also owned a beef cattle farm in Starr, Md., and a grain farm in Goldsboro, Md. About 40 years ago, as the two Methodist churches in Denton combined to build a new church, Adams converted the Grace Methodist Church into apartments that he owned and managed until his death. Mr. Adams was active in the Lions Club, the Masons, the Eastern Shore and State Shrine and was a life member of the Denton Volunteer Fire Co. He was highly regarded as a civic and community leader and was a mentor to many. Mr. Adams had a great love for his cottage camp on a pond in the Maine woods and spent much time there each year. The Maine locals considered him one of them as he joined with them in hunting, boating and snowmobiling. In the last five years, he co-owned standard-bred horses with Kenny Wood; he loved going to the harness races at Dover and Harrington and was often seen at the track.
Adams was predeceased by his wife, Catherine; a son, Roger Adams; a granddaughter, Joanna Plummer; a brother, Maurice Adams; and a sister, Jessie Adams Williamson. He is survived by two daughters, Ruby Adams of Rehoboth Beach and Jane A. Plummer of Hagerstown, Md.; one brother, Lester Adams of Bridgeville; two granddaughters, Jenny L. Plummer-Welker of Bowie, Md., and Jackie D. Plummer Sprow of Genessee, Pa.; one step-grandson, Reilly Gordon of McLean, Va.; and three great-grandchildren, Ellie, Ezra and Josey, all of Genessee.
Services will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 14, at the Moore Funeral Home P.A., 12 South Second St., Denton, where friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, April 13. There will be a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 13. Interment will be in Denton cemetery . It was Mr. Adams’ request that his family and friends take their loved ones out to dinner.

Carolyn E. Fanny Leister, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away Monday, April 9, 2007, one day before her 45th birthday.
She was born April 10, 1962, in Wilmington, to Charles R. Fanny Sr. and June E. Fanny. Carolyn attended Hodgson Vo Tech.
She was raised in Garfield Park before moving to Lewes and Rehoboth Beach. She worked at Bowlerama Restaurant, A&P Food Markets, Pathmark and Michael Christopher. At the time of her death she was employed at Vivian’s Style in Lewes and Wachovia Bank in Rehoboth. Carolyn touched the heart of everyone who knew her. She loved the beach and dancing. Carolyn especially enjoyed spending time with her many nieces and nephews. Carolyn is survived by her father, Charles R. Fanny Sr.; mother, June E. Fanny; four sisters, Mary Ann Snyder, Donna M. Emmons and husband Steve, Barbara Dudkewitz and husband Steve, and Rosemary Fanny; a brother, Charles Fanny Jr. and wife Denise; her loving companion, Jeff Howett and his two sons Brett and Ryan; Jeff’s parents, Norman and Annabelle Howett; maternal aunt and uncle, Nick and Carolyn Pettoruto; two paternal aunts, Shirley and Betty Fanny; numerous cousins; nieces and nephews, Michele and Mark Tisher and children Courtney and Justin, Eric Polite, Tracy and Chris Godwin and children Hannah, Haley, and Hayden, Christopher Morris, Chrissy and Patrick Kalix and children Gabriel and Alyssa, Desiree Rivera, June and Joshua Ripoll and children Devan and Isaiah, Cathy Fanny; and her dog whom she adored, Bubby. She will be sadly missed by relatives, friends and co-workers. Carolyn was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Mary E. Marquess and Paul and Cathy North; paternal grandparents, Harvey R. Sr. and Bessie Fanny; and her faithful, loving pet, Harley Davidson. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, April 13, in the Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Rd., Newark, and again from 9 to 10 a.m., Saturday, April 14, followed by a service in celebration of Carolyn’s life at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Silverbrook cemetery . Elizabeth S. “Bette” Conway Talmo, 75, of Newark, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at Jeanne Jugan Residence of the Little Sisters of the Poor. She graduated from St. Elizabeth School and attended the St. Francis School of Nursing. She worked as a bartender for VFW posts 615, 2863 and 3420, working the longest at the Atterbury Post. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Her son John predeceased her in 1999. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David F. and Kathryn of Wilmington; her daughter-in-law, Shelly Talmo of Lewes; her stepson, Francis A. Talmo of Rehoboth Beach; and three step-grandchildren, Nikki, Jared and Josh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 14, at Jeanne Jugan Residence, 185 Salem Church Rd., Newark, where friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, April 13. Interment will be private.
William Henry Williams,

William Henry Williams, 70, of Georgetown, professor emeritus of history at the University of Delaware, died Saturday, April 7, 2007, of colon cancer.
Dr. Williams, who inspired students and acquaintances alike with his scholarship, good spirits, lively curiosity and wide range of interests, was a popular and respected professor of American history at the University of Delaware’s Academic Center in Georgetown for 33 years. In 2006 he was honored as the third Delawarean to receive the Governor’s Heritage Award for “preserving and celebrating Delaware’s history and culture.”
Dr. Williams was born June 9, 1936 in Port Jervis, N.Y., and spent his youth in Southold, N.Y. He was the oldest of six sons of Henry Williams and Esther Crocker Williams. His father was supervising principal of the public schools in Southold, which Dr. Williams attended.
In 1958 he graduated from Drew University with a bachelor of arts in history and later received a master of science in education from Yeshiva University. He began his long teaching career as a high school teacher at J.H.S 204 in Queens, New York City, and also taught at Pawling Central High School in Pawling, N.Y. He then pursued his doctorate at the University of Delaware, receiving his PhD in 1971.
In 1967 he and his family moved to Georgetown where Dr. Williams taught in what was then known as the University of Delaware’s Parallel Program until his retirement in 2000. He also served as southern coordinator of the university’s Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program. He was a fellow of the university’s Center for Advanced Studies.
In addition to his teaching in the field of American history, Dr. Williams was the author of six books, primarily focused on the Delmarva peninsula. These include “America’s First Hospital: The Pennsylvania Hospital, 1751-1841” (1976); “The Garden of American Methodism” (1984), published for the bicentennial of the Methodist church; “Slavery and Freedom in Delaware” (1996), which was the basis for two national award-winning films; “The First State: An Illustrated History of Delaware” (1985); and “Delmarva’s Chicken Industry: 75 Years of Progress” (1998). His book on the environmental history of Delaware, titled “An Environmental History of Delaware, 1641-2000,” is scheduled for publication this fall. Dr. Williams has also written numerous articles for scholarly journals and standard reference works in the fields of medicine, race relations and religion.
In addition to his professional career, Dr. Williams was active in church and civic activities. He served as chairman of the Delaware Humanities Forum, as president of the Peninsula Delaware Conference Historical Society of the Methodist Church and was a member of the Delaware Heritage Commission. In 1980 he was awarded the Joseph DelTufo award for service to the humanities in Delaware.
Dr. Williams was a longtime Sunday school teacher at Wesley United Methodist Church in Georgetown, where he also chaired numerous commissions and committees. In Georgetown, he served as chairman of the town’s Bicentennial Committee in 1976.
Most recently he had been active, along with his wife, Helen, in raising funds for a new library in Georgetown. When his sons were young, he coached Little League baseball. He was a member of Sussex Pines Country Club where he enjoyed playing golf.
Dr. Williams was predeceased by his parents and by his son, David Garrett Williams, who died in 1978. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Helen Garrett Williams; his daughter, Dawn Esther Stitzel and her husband August Stitzel of Annapolis, Md.; his son Mark Thomas Williams and his wife Kym Oppenheim Williams of Newton, Mass.; and two granddaughters, Amelia Blaine Williams and Sarah Elizabeth Williams. He is also survived by his brothers, Wayne D. Williams and his wife Marlene of Port Jefferson, N.Y., Jerry R. Williams and his wife Rose of New Paltz, N.Y., Thomas J. Williams and his wife Shirley of Upper Black Eddy, Pa., Robert D. Williams and his wife Susan of Harbinger, N.C. and Mark T. Williams and his wife Mary Ann of Stanfordville, N.Y.
A celebration of Bill Williams’ life will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, April 14, at Wesley United Methodist Church at East Laurel and North Race streets in Georgetown. The service will be followed by a reception in Jones Hall at the church, where friends may visit with the Williams family.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, 102 East Laurel St., Georgetown DE 19947 or to the Friends of the Georgetown Library, 10 West Pine St., Georgetown DE 19947 for the Williams Memorial Fund.
Nancy Rhue,
retired Cape teacher
Nancy Clifton Rhue, 59, of Milton, passed away Friday, April 6, 2007, surrounded by her loving family, at home.
Nancy was born in Milford, the daughter of the late William Carlton and Beatrice Hudson Clifton.
She was a 1966 graduate of Milford High School, a graduate of St. Andrew’s College in Laurinburg, N.C. and received her master’s degree from the University of Delaware.
Nancy taught English in the Cape Henlopen School District for 32 years and was an adviser for the school’s National Honor Society.
She was a member of Slaughter Neck United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities, including church pianist and Sunday school secretary. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and served on the building committee for the social hall addition.
Nancy was also president of the Friends of the Milton Public Library and was integral in fundraising for the recent expansion.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Doris Argo.
She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Brent Rhue; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael C. and Garnet Rhue of Milton and Jonathan and Tina Rhue of Portland, Ore.; a daughter, Allison E. Rhue of Milton; three grandchildren, Hadley Rhue, Austin Rhue and Gabriel Rhue; five sisters, Vera Reed and Linda Carpenter, both of Milton, Ethel Graham, Eleanor Ritter and Carlyn Bryan, all of Milford; and two brothers, Robert Clifton and Donald Clifton, both of Milton.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 10, in Slaughter Neck United Methodist Church, Argo’s Corner Road, Milford. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.

Jean Rebecca Smith,

Jean Rebecca “Smithie” Smith, 72, of Seaford, formerly of Laurel, died of natural causes Monday, April 2, 2007, in Genesis, Seaford Retirement Center, formerly Genesis Elder Care, Seaford.
Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late William and Annie Harmon.
She was affectionately called “Big Momma” by family and called “Smithie” by friends and co-workers.
In her earlier years, she resided in Harlem, N.Y., having completed her education in the New York school system.
Upon relocating to Laurel, she became a member of Victory Revival Fellowship; later, she fellowshipped with the Rev. Braxton-Clark and his congregation in Delmar.
Prior to her disability, Mrs. Smith retired from the Stockley Center, where she worked for many years as a certified health care aide.
She is survived by two sons, Oliver (Dorethea) Smith of Milford and Darryl “Stevie” (Michele) Smith of Milton; four daughters, Blenda (Larkland) Lawson of Laurel, Kim (Jean) Marcelin of Laurel, Felita “Lisa” (William) Sampson of Seaford and Sonia Smith-Sampson of Laurel; an adopted daughter, Maggie DuPont of Laurel; a brother, William (Dianne) Harmon of Central Islip, N.Y.; a sister, Margaret Cogen of Ocala, Ill.; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a devoted long-time companion, Edward King Jr. of Trenton, N.J.; a foster son who resided with her, Leonard; three longtime devoted special friends, Edna Smith, also a sister-in-law of Sherman, Texas, Willa Mae DuPont of Seaford and Juanita “Peaches” Johnson of Laurel; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services were held in United Deliverance Center, Laurel, with burial in Odd Fellows cemetery , Seaford.
