Anthony Zangaro,

Anthony “Tony” A. Zangaro, 77, of Long Neck, and formerly of Philadelphia and New Jersey, died Wednesday, April 4, 2007 at the Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
He was born in Marlton, N.J., son of the late Anthony and Irma (Driscoll) Zangaro.
He was a retired real estate broker and served with the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War, where he was a survivor of the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir.
He was a member of American Legion Post 28, VFW Post 7447 and the AMVETS 2.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Alma M. Zangaro; two sons, Joseph and Mark Zangaro, both of New Jersey; five grandchildren, Mara and Jacob of Riverside, N.J., Kief, Katie and Joseph of San Diego, Calif.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 11, at Mary, Mother of Peace Catholic Church, Millsboro.
Interment will be at the Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery
South in Millsboro.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, at the chapel of Melson Funeral Services on Long Neck Road in Millsboro, and again from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Ann E. Cowley, 67, of Rehoboth Beach, died Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., daughter of the late William and Anna McAllister McDonald. Ann moved to the area in 1996 from Upper Darby, Pa.
She was a homemaker who loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, music and going to the slots. Ann also loved cats and enjoyed caring for stray cats in the neighborhood.
In addition to her parents, Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Leo J. Cowley Jr., in 1999.
She is survived by 11 children, Donna J. Rieman of Wallingford, Pa., Cynthia Dever of Hebron, Md., Virginia Norman and husband Edward of Daytona Beach, Fla., Bethann Motti and Joseph Gallagher, both of Rehoboth Beach, Janet Boerckel of Upper Darby, Marianne Gallagher of Seaford, Leigh Gallagher of Hershey, Pa., Laurie Connor of Dallas, Texas, Barbara Connor of Laurel, and Abigail Haines of Morton, Pa., as well as several grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were held. Burial was in the Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery , Millsboro.
Leroy C. Thompson,

Leroy Clinton “Roy” Thompson, 87, died Monday, April 2, 2007, at Harbor Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Lewes.
Roy was born Dec. 20, 1919, in Manasquan, N.J., son of Clinton F. and Ethel Roland Thompson. He enlisted in the National Guard in September 1940, and his unit was federalized in 1942. He served in the Aleutian Islands as a special vehicle operator engaged in building an air base at Big Delta with Squadron D, 1455th AAF Base Unit.
During his service in the AAF he was awarded the American Service Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal.
Following his discharge in 1945, he returned to Manasquan where he was engaged in construction with his father until the family moved to West Palm Beach, Fla.
In 1976 Roy moved to Lewes and was employed at Beebe Medical Center until retirement in 1987. He was a member of Groome United Methodist Church, Lewes. He will be remembered fondly by his family and many acquaintances for his friendly smile and special greeting, “Hi, Sport, how’s your motor running?”
In addition to his parents, Roy was predeceased by his brother, Harold “Buck” Thompson of Rehoboth Beach; and his niece, Kathi Thompson Booth of Georgetown. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Joan Marshall Thompson of Rehoboth Beach; and his niece, Shelly Thompson Sposato and husband Fred of Milton. He is also survived by seven great-nieces and nephews, William “Buck” Booth, Meg Booth Lawson and husband Cliff, Allisa Booth, Mark Booth, Spencer Booth, Marshall Owings and Casey Owings; and great-great-nephew Case Louis Lawson.
A memorial service conducted by the Rev. William C. Hopkins will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 17, at Groome United Methodist Church, Savannah Road and Dewey Avenue, Lewes. Burial will be private at Atlantic View cemetery , Manasquan, N.J.
Marvin E. Wright,

Marvin E. Wright, 74, of Lewes, formerly of Phoenix, Ariz., went to meet the Lord Tuesday, April 3, 2007.
He was born Nov. 29, 1932 in Rosine, Ky., son of the late Rev. Richard and Rosella Wright. Marvin is reuniting with brother, Robert Wright, and his sisters, Joyce Dye, Lillian Johnson and Edna Claar.
As the general superintendent for the largest construction company in the state of Arizona, he was very well known and respected throughout the community. He contributed to some of the great architecture in Phoenix. Marvin loved fishing, banana pudding, gardening, John Wayne movies, and John Deere tractors. Above all else, his greatest love was time spent with his family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Lois “Pat” Wright; two sons, Edward Wright and his wife Tina, and Jim Wright; three daughters, Debbie Pettyjohn, Patty Todd, and Cathy Stewart; a brother, Carl Wright and his wife Becky; two sisters, Ruth Willard, Lois Hill and her husband Mike; as well as 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, April 6, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, with the Rev. Neal Murray officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Adam Bryant,
Navy veteran
Adam Bryant, 80, formerly of Harbeson, departed this life Thursday, March 29, 2007, in Joliet, Ill. He was 80.
He was born to the union of Adam and Jenny Bryant April 22, 1926.
He was united in holy matrimony to Ruth Bost Dec. 23, 1942, and from this union six children were born.
Adam lived a full and productive life.
He attended Hampton Institute in Hampton, Va.
He served his country in the U.S. Navy, ranking motor machinist mate 3rd class, and received an honorable discharge Jan. 26, 1946. During his military tour his medals of honor included Victory Medal, Pacific Theatre Medal and American Theatre Medal.
He was preceded in death by his lovely wife, Ruth; his beautiful daughter, Beverly; one brother; and six sisters.
He leaves to cherish his memories two sons, Adam Bryant and his wife Ernestine of Chicago, and Ronald Bryant of Washington; three daughters, Yvonne Lugo and her husband William of Illinois, Tanya Hatchett-Porter of Tennessee and Faith Hurst of Alabama; 18 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Cordella. Also very close to his heart and by his side during his illness were Ruby Green, Luther Moore, Richard Tyler Sr. and Jr. and Ron Branker; his nephew, Alfred Woods; and niece, Rebecca Johnson, both of Cool Spring.
Burial will be private.
Jean Taylor Russell,

Jean Taylor Russell, 79, of Bridgeville, died Monday, April 2, 2007, at Lofland Life Care in Seaford.
Mrs. Russell was born in Philadelphia, Pa., daughter of the late William and Bessie Cotshott Taylor.
She had been employed as an executive secretary for the Federal Aviation Administration for many years. Russell was a longtime member of Christ Lutheran Church, and a member of the Bridgeville Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. She had served on the board of Luther Towers Convalescent Home in Milton. She also had served as president of the Dairy Goat Association. She was an animal lover, loved camping with her family and was very devoted to her family.
Mrs. Russell is survived by her husband Elmer W. Russell; two daughters, Yvonne Price and her husband David of Laurel and Mary Malmberg and her husband Norwin of Annapolis, Md.; five sons, John Russell and his wife Doris of Lewes, Joseph Russell and his wife Annie of Dallas, Texas, Walter Russell and his wife Carol of Baltimore, Md.; Robert Russell and his wife Donna of Laurel and Thomas Russell and his wife Brenda of Dallas, Texas; two daughters-in-law, Connie Russell of Pasadena, Md., wife of her deceased son Elmer H. Russell and Estelle Russell of Seaford, wife of her deceased son Barry W. Russell. There are also numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren surviving Mrs. Russell.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 7, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Hardesty Chapel, 202 Laws Street, Bridgeville with Pastor Andrew Watkins officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the services. Interment will be private.
Mildred Ellsworth,

Mildred Ellsworth, 81, of Lewes passed away Saturday, March 31, 2007, in Genesis Healthcare-Seaford Center. Mrs. Ellsworth was born July 25, 1925, daughter of the late Vernon and Nellie McCarter. She was a loving mother and homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William W. Ellsworth Jr., in 1997; and a son, William W. Ellsworth III in 2006.
She is survived by two daughters, Kathy McCarty of Vineland, N.J., and Jo Ann Giles and her husband Ray of Pawleys Island, S.C.; two sons, Robert W. Ellsworth of Georgetown, and Joseph L. Ellsworth and his wife Christine of Wilmington; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held in the Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery

Doris E. Carmean,

Doris E. Carmean, 83, of Millsboro, died Tuesday, April 3, 2007.
Mrs. Carmean was a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church at Springfield Crossroads. Doris enjoyed cooking and taking care of her family.
Doris never met a stranger and was a real lady.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Lida Mae Wooten Parker; two husbands, Reynolds Esham, who died in 1953 and Delbert Carmean, who died in 1991.
She is survived by her children, Wayne Carmean and his wife Nancy of Millsboro, Allan Carmean and his wife Deanna of Millsboro Gene Esham and his wife Mildred of Millsboro, Jackie Hamilton and her husband Russell of Charleston S.C., Kerry Carmean and his wife Karless of Millsboro; a brother, Dale Parker of Ormond Beach, Fla.; and seven grandchildren:

Ralph A. Martin,

Ralph A. Martin, 96, of Lewes, passed away Thursday, March 29, 2007 in his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Martin was born in Milton, son of the late Harry and Virgie Pettyjohn Martin.
He worked with Delaware River and Bay Authority for many years in the maintenance department, retiring in 1977. Many years ago he had worked for Stockley Cannery and was a self- employed poultry farmer for 30 years.
Ralph loved bowling, golfing, harness racing and baseball, especially the Philadelphia Phillies.
He also was known for his love of cats, and enjoyed caring for and feeding many of them in the neighborhood. He attended the First Baptist Church of Milford.
In addition to his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by his first wife, Elsie Marvel Martin; a son, Ralph Martin; a brother, William Martin; and a sister, Virginia Moore.
He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Ina Brewer Martin; nine children, James Martin and wife Joan of Lewes, Robert Martin and wife Gwen, Bill Martin and wife Peggy, all of Rehoboth, Charles Martin and wife Carolyn of Lewes, Betty Craven of Woodbury, N.J., Pat Gargano of Toms River, N.J., Dawn Smith and husband Jerry of Felton, Charles Kenton of Lincoln and John Kenton of Columbia, Tenn.; 28 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews and special niece, Thelma Hopkins and husband Bill of Milton; and very good friends, Joe and Renada Wiley of Milford.
A funeral service was held in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, Milton, with burial in Odd Fellows cemetery , Milton.

James A. Alexander,

James A. Alexander, fondly known as “Jumbo” and “Pop Pop Jim,” 87, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 27, 2007.
Born April 11, 1919, Jim was a veteran of World War II and served in the D-Day invasion. He played softball with the Wilmington Boy’s Club before the war. He played basketball with St. Paul’s CYO. Jim was president of Electric Hose & Rubber ARA for two years. He was involved with the construction of the softball field at 16th & Claymont Street. After the war, Jim helped manage the Defiance Club. He played softball for Yetter’s Tavern in 1955. He loved his sports. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 5447 and the Defiance Club. He was a social member of the Knights of Columbus in Claymont. Jim worked for Electric Hose & Rubber for 33 years.
Jim was predeceased by his wife, Shirley Conlin Alexander. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, William and Peg Alexander of Rehoboth Beach; by his stepchildren and their spouses, Shirley and Dave Slaughter, who cared for him, Richard and Betty Grier, Patricia Zickgraf, Juanita and James Henderson, Donald and Alice Grier and Debra Wright. Also surviving are his grandson, Jason Leary and his wife Terra, who devoted their time in caring for Pop Pop Jim, and grandson, Joseph Leary and his wife Denise. Jim had a total of 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, two nephews and a great-nephew.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 3, at the Mealey Funeral Home, 703 North Broom St., where friends may call after 10 a.m. Burial will be in Cathedral cemetery.

Lewis P. Ercole,

Lewis P. Ercole, 79, went to his eternal rest with God Thursday, March 29, 2007.
Mr. Ercole was born December 3, 1927, in Beckley, formerly known as Mabscott, W.V., son of the late Andrew Sr. and Emily Resine Ercole. He and his family moved to Wilmington in August 1944. Lewis worked at the A.I. DuPont estates for Jesse Belle DuPont as a gardener, nurturing the flowers and plants in the greenhouses while also supplying floral arrangements. He retired in 1992 after offering 39 years of service. Lewis loved the game of baseball and was a hard-throwing pitcher and third baseman. It was a true crowd-pleaser for local baseball fans to see all three Ercole brothers playing together as teammates and batting first, second and third in the batting order. Above all, Lewis was a man of great faith, living every day of his life in service to the Lord. He always supported his church and gave generously to numerous other religious denominations and charities. The Lord reached and touched Lewis throughout his lifetime, making him a special child of God. Lewis always considered heaven to be his true home, and now he is there.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Ercole was predeceased by his nephew, Ernest Lewis Ercole; and his brothers-in-law, Fabio Paoletti and Joseph DiAngelo. He is survived by his two sisters, Josephine Paoletti and Mary DiAngelo; two brothers, Carl Ercole and his wife Josephine of San Mateo, Calif., and Andy Ercole and his wife Rosemarie of Rehoboth Beach; an aunt, Nell Malatesta; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:15 a.m., Tuesday, April 3, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 4th and Bancroft sts. in Wilmington. Interment will follow in Cathedral cemetery . Family and friends may call at the church from 10 to 11 a.m., Tuesday morning. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 301 N. Bancroft Pkwy., Wilmington DE 19805, or to a charitable institution of your choice.

Llewellyn ‘Lou’ Evans,
retired mechanic
Llewellyn W. “Lou” Evans, 69, of Lincoln, died Saturday, March 31, 2007, at home.
Mr. Evans was born January 12, 1938, in Milford, the son of the late Llewellyn W. and Madeline Hammond Evans.
He was a veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps. Lou was a mechanic, working for I.G. Burton in Milford and Townsend Brothers in Dover.
He then went to work as a shop foreman at Melson Alternator and Starter in Lewes. He left Melson’s to work for the state of Delaware in both the Dover and Georgetown shops for 10 years before retiring in January 2000.
After retirement, he worked at Hertrich’s of Milford part time as a driver and at the Delaware Solid Waste Authority in Ellendale. He was a member of the Milford Moose Lodge.
Lou loved to tinker around his shop and enjoyed fishing and hunting years ago. He especially loved to spend time with his granddaughter Courtney, who was his pride and joy.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Betty Evans, one daughter, M. Ann Evans-Betts and her husband Charles “C.B.” Betts of Milford; one granddaughter, Courtney A. Betts; three sisters, Helena Behler of Charlotte, N.C., Mary S. Lee of Bridgeville and Sylvia Ann Switzer of Orleans, Ind.; one brother, Richard E. Evans of West Virginia; and many nieces, nephews and their spouses.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 4, at the Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Ave., Milford, where friends may call after noon. Burial will be in Lincoln cemetery , Clendaniel Pond Road, Lincoln.
