Magdalene Charlotte “Shirley” Stevenson, 80, passed away Friday, June 22, 2007.
She was born in Baltimore, Md., Dec. 12, 1926, to the late William and Anna Gummer Dorsey. Following the death of her mother and father she was raised by Sally and Vernon Thames. Magdalene worked for Wassam’s 5 & 10 in Wilmington Manor; she then worked in security at Pot-Nets Resorts.
Mrs. Stevenson is survived by two sons, William E. Stevenson and his wife Donna of New Castle, and Jack D. Stevenson and his wife Denise of Ohio; grandchildren, Rob, Brandi, Jennie, Tori, Nicholas, Robert, John and Daniel; and eight great-grandchildren. Magdalene was preceded in death by her husband Earl “Steve” Stevenson Jr., her son, John L. Stevenson and a great-grandson, Brenden.
Services and burial will be private.
Helen Myers,
Homemakers president
Helen Schillen Myers, 82, of Lewes, died Sunday, June 24, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
She was born June 26, 1924, in Roanoke, Va., daughter of the late Noah and Oakey Wood Schillen.
Mrs. Myers moved to Delaware 25 years ago from Wheaton, Md. She was the current president and member of the National Association of Homemakers and the United Methodist Women’s Association. She belonged to Conley’s United Methodist Church. She was very creative: She painted china, loved to play bridge and was a member of the Stitch & Bitch Sewing Group in the Angola area.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billie R. Myers in 2005; a son, William Ray Myers in 2004; two brothers; and a sister.
She is survived by her son, Thomas T. Myers and his wife Nancy Astrove-Myers of Germantown, Md.; a daughter, Catherine Ann Treadway of Houston, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Sheila Myers of Germantown, Md.; three grandchildren, Travis Myers of California, Stephen Myers and his wife Cynthia of Keedysville, Md., and Heather Stone and her husband Steve of Mt. Airy, Md.; six great-grandchildren, Tyler, Sydnee and Kassidy Myers and Anabelle, Bryan and Chloe Stone.
Memorial services were held at Conley’s United Methodist Church, Lewes. Entombment was private at Delaware Veterans cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Conley’s U.M. Church Building Fund.

Walter D. Wagamon,
local Realtor
Walter D. Wagamon of Rehoboth Beach, 60, passed away at his home Friday, June 22, 2007.
Walt was born March 9, 1947, the son of the late Capt. Arthur W. Wagamon, U.S. Air Force, and Anne Burton Wagamon of Milton. He grew up on the shores of Wagamon’s Pond in Milton.
He enjoyed more than 30 years in the real estate business in Rehoboth Beach. Walt was associated with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, where he achieved many acknowledgements for outstanding performance. Walt’s love for life was complete with his family and a good round of golf. Walt was a member of the 1965 graduating class of Milton High School and a graduate of the University of Delaware, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. During his college years, Walt was a lifeguard with the Rehoboth Beach Beach Patrol. He served as president of the Sussex County Association of Realtors, was a Sussex County Realtor of the Year, president of the Milton Lions Club and a member of the board of directors of the Rehoboth Beach Country Club, where he served as golf chairman for many years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his aunt, Marion Burton. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Karen Maull Wagamon; their daughter, Christina A. Wagamon, whom he fondly referred to as “Zip,” of Salisbury, N.C.; his sister, Ellen Wagamon Graves and her husband William Graves of Lewes.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 26, at Goshen U.M. Church, 105 Mulberry St., Milton. Interment will be in Odd Fellows cemetery , Milton.

Luther “Bud” Moore III,
avid writer and reader
Luther “Bud” Moore III, 75, a longtime resident of Rehoboth Beach, passed away Friday, June 22, 2007, at Green Valley Terrace, Millsboro, after a long illness.
He was born in Valdosta, Ga., the oldest son of the late Luther B. Moore II and Lillian Wilkes Moore. He was raised in Salisbury, Md., and while still a student at Wicomico High School he enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War. He later met and married Abigail Ralph of Salisbury while still a student at Washington College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree.
In the course of a 35-year career with Westinghouse, he served as speechwriter for several corporate chairmen and spent three years in Paris as director of international public relations.
He retired as the director of executive communications. He was a member of the Arthur W. Page Society, an association of senior corporate public relations executives.
He had a summer house in Rehoboth for more than 35 years before retiring there in 1994. Bud was a frequent and always entertaining guest of his lifelong friends Jack and Carol Hyde at their home in Rehoboth.
A writer by vocation and avocation, he was a voracious reader and an avid student of the English language.
He maintained a large collection of prescriptive and descriptive dictionaries and knew the difference.
Among his favorite authors were Ernest Hemingway, Patrick O’Brian and Somerset Maugham. Much of his reading was devoted to history. He spent years engaged in studying the lives of Thomas Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt and Winston Churchill.
A lifelong athlete, he ran track at Wi High and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Four years after a car accident in which he broke his left arm and leg, he ran the Pittsburgh Marathon at the age of 53. He later competed in Olympic distance triathlons and at the age of 68 was still logging more than 100 miles a week on his bicycle.
He is survived by his wife Gail; sons, Mark and wife Patricia, Scott and wife Jessica, Shawn and wife Jan and Christian and wife Kristen; five grandchildren - Liam, Nigel, Alex, Kate and Olivia; and his sister-in-law Charlotte “Mimi” Weiland. His sister, Jacqulin Moore of Salisbury, passed away in 1998.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday June 26, at St. Edmond’s’s Catholic Church, King Charles and Laurel streets, Rehoboth Beach. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be private at Epworth Methodist cemetery , Rehoboth Beach.

Sarah Frances Duffy

Sarah Frances (Hall) Duffy of Rehoboth Beach, 88, died Thursday, June 21, 2007, in Harbor Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Lewes, after a brief illness.
Sarah was born May 15, 1919, in Clarksville, daughter of Lulu Rosetta Williams and James Hall.
She grew up and spent her entire life in Delaware.
Sarah worked as a housekeeper for several families in Rehoboth Beach.
She was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church in Belltown for many years, where she served on the senior choir, with the United Methodist Women and also the Henlopen Choral Society.
Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, in 1985; and her daughter Betty E. Duffy in 2000.
She is survived by three sons, Jonathan Duffy and Jeron Duffy, both of Rehoboth Beach, and E. Lee Duffy of Durham, N.C.; a daughter, Marjorie O. Biles of Rehoboth Beach; a sister, Irene Collins of Millsboro; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m., Wednesday, June 27, at John Wesley United Methodist Church in Belltown, where friends may call two hours prior to the service.

R. Richard Messick Jr., 76 , of Rehoboth Beach, died Friday, June 22, 2007, at the Harbor Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Lewes. He was born Oct. 16, 1930, in Lewes, son of the late Ralph Richard Messick Sr. and Margaret (Marvel) Messick.
Mr. Messick was a data processor for the DuPont Co. for many years. He was an avid Blue Hen fan and for many years he worked with the Rehoboth Beach Little League. He was a U.S. Army veteran and had served in the Presidential Honor Guard in Washington, D.C., following the war.
He was predeceased by his wife Helen Jean Messick in 2005 and his daughter Nancy Lee in 1971. He is survived by his son, Richard W. Messick and his wife Lynda of Georgetown; a granddaughter, Samantha Melvin and her husband Joe of Georgetown; a grandson, Will Messick of Georgetown; a brother, Ted Messick of Rehoboth Beach; a sister, Shirley Carey of Milton; and good friend Bonnie Futcher of Rehoboth Beach.
Funeral services with the Rev. Randy Booth officiating will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 26, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may call one hour prior to services. Burial will be at Epworth Methodist cemetery
in Rehoboth Beach.

Lennart G. Swartling,
DuPont retiree, inventor
Lennart G. Swartling, 81, of Rehoboth Beach, died Thursday, June 21, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, after a brief illness.
Mr. Swartling was born in Vestaras, Sweden, and reared in Stockholm. He served in the Swedish Army during World War II. He emigrated to the United States in 1948, arriving on a Friday, and he had secured a job by Monday. He made his home in the Wilmington/Newark area. He was retired from the Mechanical Development Laboratory of the DuPont Corp. He was the recipient of 17 patents for his work at DuPont.
Mr. Swartling was an avid boater and loved the water. He speed tested motorcycles at Daytona Beach, Fla., for Harley Davidson and BMW in the 1950s. He could fix anything mechanical and never lacked for a project to work on. Except for the basic shell, he built his entire retirement home in Rehoboth Beach, and he continually improved upon it until his death.
His wife, Florence Craven Swartling, predeceased him in 1996.
He is survived by his sister, Marie Louise Hagstrom of Sweden and numerous nieces and nephews in both Sweden and the United States.
At his request, services will be private.

Col. Charles M. Seeger,
innovative pilot
Col. Charles M. “Chuck” Seeger Jr., 86, an Air Force colonel whose research influenced the cockpit design of military aircraft, died April 21, 2007, in Greenspring Village retirement community, Springfield, Ill.
Col. Seeger was born in New Richmond, Ohio, and grew up in Cincinnati.
He graduated from Wilmington College in Ohio before enrolling at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.
He received a master’s degree in psychology from Ohio State University in 1951 and did a doctoral study in psychology at Ohio State.
Col. Seeger was a 1945 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy and transferred to the Air Force after it was formed in 1947.
He was trained to fly seven different bombers, fighters and cargo planes and served as a pilot in the Berlin Airlift after World War II.
From 1949 to 1952, he studied at the Air Force Institute of Technology at Ohio State University.
He then spent four years as chief of the In-Flight Research Aeromedical Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.
He conducted research that resulted in the basic design of instrumentation and cockpits of military aircraft.
Col. Seeger, who was fluent in German, was an assistant professor of German and a professor of psychology at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado from 1956 to 1960.
He then came to Washington, D.C., as a personnel officer at Andrews Air Force Base.
He later flew cargo planes in Japan and held command positions with the Air Force Military Airlift Command at the Pentagon and at Air Force bases in California and Illinois.
From 1967 to 1969, he piloted C-124 cargo planes from Dover Air Force Base, including 33 missions to Vietnam.
From 1969 to 1974, Col. Seeger was at the Pentagon, first as chief of the Military Airlift Command and later as chief of the passenger and personal property office.
He retired in 1974.
His decorations included two awards of the Legion of Merit and two Air Force Commendation Medals.
In 1974, he moved from Upper Marlboro, Md., to Rehoboth Beach, where he was city manager for two years.
He taught math and science at a middle school in Dover, from 1976 to 1984.
While serving with Allied occupation forces in Germany in 1947, Col. Seeger won the Army Air Forces tennis championship and was invited to play at Wimbledon. He enjoyed playing tennis throughout his life.
He and his wife lived in Satellite Beach, Fla., from 1984 to 2002, when they moved to Springfield.
He was president of the Greenspring Village Republican Club.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen Elizabeth Seeger of Springfield; three children, Christopher C. Seeger and Charles M. Seeger III, both of Washington, and Cynthia Seeger Kleiman of Manassas; and three grandsons.
Regina L. Welch,
former Lewes resident
Regina L. Rogers Welch, 67, of Lakeland, Fla., passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2007, in Lewes,.
Regina was born Sept. 9, 1939, in Upland, Pa., and grew up in the Lewes area. She spent some time in Michigan and retired to Lakeland, Fla., in 1991.
Mrs. Welch was an avid Tigers baseball fan and was instrumental, with her husband, in creating a fan club for the local minor league Lakeland Tigers in Florida. She enjoyed line dancing, shuffleboard, reading and helping friends in her community. Regina was united in marriage to John B. Welch on July 19, 1961; he preceded her in death in August 1998.
In addition to her husband, Regina was preceded in death by her parents, Carl I. and Mae Holson Rogers.
She is survived by her brother Bruce A. Rogers of Georgetown; her daughters, Karla Bailey of Norfolk, Va., Sandra Welch of Waterford, Mich., and Diana Pearce and her husband Michael of Grand Blanc, Mich.; her grandchildren, John Corridri and his wife, Laura, Nikki Alonso and her husband Bruno, Michael Pearce Jr. and Ryan Pearce; her sisters-in-law, Roma Carney and Karen Field Rogers; her brother-in-law, Rexford Welch and his wife, Sally; her nieces, Katelyn E. Rogers and Megan A. Rogers; her nephews, Matthew C. Rogers and Scott Welch and his wife, Amber; former son-in-law Michael Swan and his wife Holly as well as her best friend, Joyce Sutton.
Services were held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Georgetown. Burial was in Odd Fellows cemetery , Milton.
